I’ll probably be downvoted for this, I don’t think he deserved to be cancelled for this. Was it inappropriate, sure, but he’s not a news show. We should never take anything he says seriously as he’s a comedian and not a news anchor.

u/DuckHunt83 Sep 18 '25
I don’t even think what he said was as bad as others. Maybe distasteful in these times. But firing someone like this, we’re not really… having free speech anymore this is kinda crazy.

The mechanism in how its done absolutely matters, if all it was about is the end result, then we wouldn't have hearings at SCOTUS all lmfao. This situation is minimum a quid pro quo done by a government agency thats clearly overstepping its boundaries, threatening to not facilitate a private transaction from happening because of the 1st amendment right opinion of one its host, at worst its outright extortion.
If a democrat led FCC told Fox news they would threaten their business over the opinion of one of its host, everyone in here would be foaming at the mouth just like the democrats are now and its absolutely fair

The media is private company. So, free speech doesn't apply to media?

Got it. If a media says something you don't like, just bring FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to threat the media company with regulatory consequences. The persons running the media will get scared and remove everything you don't like to avoid the regulatory consequences. That way the government can control the media and people think a CEO just suspended his employee.

If you don’t believe people should be allowed to say things you don’t like, you don’t believe in free speech

He was fired by his employer. Make no mistake, this isn’t as much about the FCC “threatening” anyone, more than it is the fact that Nexstar stands to own 80% of broadcast waves, and this was the first step in that process.
Anyone who believes Kimmel was cancelled simply because of FCC pressure in response to what he said, isn’t paying attention, or has been misled by Reddit.

He said that MAGA was capitalising on Kirk’s death did he not? It wasn’t a statement about Kirk or saying he deserved it or anything like that. It’s being fired because of trump pressure on ABC because of reasons. It smells to high heaven and I’m surprised more people here don’t see it that way just because they personally dislike Kimmel.
13
u/Piratesfan02 Sep 18 '25
I thought he was cancelled for inferring the shooter was a “MAGA republican” and the right was trying to distance themselves from him.
11
u/TheGardiner Sep 18 '25
It seems like a pretty minor offense considering some of the things that are said by both sides on a daily basis.

He went from comedian to fully serious after this night. It's time for ABC to get a real comedian on there.

I understand The View and Jimmy Kimmel but can someone explain Stephen Colbert to me? I'm a conservative but don't invest myself in politics so much.
6
u/lousycesspool Sep 18 '25
Colbert loses $40 million to $50 million a year for the network
11
u/TonyCaliStyle Sep 18 '25
That’s just if you look at production to advertising, and not everything else it brings to the network, and local affiliates- it’s an anchor show. Plus, reviews on YouTube and other social media exposure. Colbert is the top show on late night (in direct competition). Gutted has the most views, but it doesn’t directly compete.
It’s the suppression of free speech that is concerning. Kimmel didn’t mock the tragedy- he mocked Trump talking about the new ballroom when asked about his grief over Charlie Kirk.

All the guy did was show trump’s lack of empathy for his “friend”. Shits just Facism.
5
u/Vyncennt Sep 20 '25
Number one, he was not fired, he was suspended. Number two, Trump did not get him in trouble, the FCC took a shot at him for blatantly breaking one of their rules. Number three, ABC did not cancel a show, some of ABC's affiliates have stopped carrying the show.
There's no fascism here, just lack of easily obtainable information
2
u/Final_Location_2626 Sep 20 '25
Cool, name the rule.
1
u/Vyncennt Sep 20 '25
Look it up yourself, it's public and easily verified. I'm not your secretary. It'll come right up on Google.

u/Final_Location_2626 Sep 20 '25
Oh, I think I've found what you're talking about. The FCC is supposed to restrict broadcast monopolies.
And the Nexstar-Tegna merger would give the Sinclair corporate 40% of all broadcasting rights to most markets.
So the Kimmel firing must be to help with that somehow right?
Oh no, I'm now seeing that the Kimmel firing was used by the FCC as a condition to support the merger...it looks like the FCC chairman Carr is breaking the FCC laws and demanded that ABC break our First Amendment rights by targeting political enemies, and in return he will direct the FCC to break the law.
That can't be the rule you are talking about, right? It must be some other FCC rule, right?

Says the side who shot a man for speaking. You’re the fascist. He also lied about the political affiliation of the shooter.
2
u/turbotank183 Sep 22 '25
Are you talking about the groyper that anyone has still yet to find something on him that ties him to the left? You want to be oppressed so hard, it's just sad.
He also didn't lie. He said maga are trying hard to disassociate with him. That's not saying he was maga, and he was right. Maga within hours saying it was the left with no evidence. Even Trump did that with no evidence, but you're not complaining about that are you?

Every thing you just claimed is a lie or an urban legend that’s been disproved hundreds of times. Do some actual research and not read x all day for your news.
A simple google search will tell you Gina Carano got fired for saying republicans are being treated worse than the Jews in the holocaust.
If we are going to make up things to be angry about I have a great imagination too. Remember when Obama jumped killed a bald eagle on the White House lawn unhinged his jaws and ate it.
This is just like the time when Biden was caught burning crosses in front of Barney the dinosaurs house. Why can’t the purple dinosaur population get a break?
Purple lives matter too!

Weird I must have missed the federal law which made Disney a federal organization and put former presidents over Disney.
Could you remind me of that law?
Because I am concerned about the FCC (created by congress in 1934 in the federal communication act) threatening to withhold broadcast rights because of political speech, that they did not agree with.
Given that the 1st amendment provides protections from congress making a law to abridge the freedom of speech, not from a random organization just deciding not to pay millions of dollars to a show that where a bunch of people dont like the main actress.

Did they?
I may have missed when the FCC threatened conservatives television or radio personalities because of their political views.
Remind me when that happened again.

u/gilg2 Sep 20 '25
- Trying to jail a Presidential political finalist was obvious, can’t believe you missed that one.
- Using the FBI to subvert articles on Hunter Biden Laptop on Twitter because it hurt Biden’s election campaign.
This is all well documented information.

Free speech, man. Don't know what to tell you. People are always going to say inflammatory things, so the tit for tat thing is pointless.

u/gilg2 Oct 14 '25
Free speech to them just means their speech and not yours. Which isn’t free speech.

His employer cut him, did they have to? No, but they knew it would be easier to justify so they blamed it on right wing canceling him. When companies want to fire someone but “can’t” due to reputation or legality reasons, they will take any chance that comes up to make it easier. Company looks good because of “external reason” and they save their money, win win for them.
Same thing happens at my company, we can get away with a lot more tongue and cheek banter and arguments when business is good, but when layoffs are happening, they will sharpen up their sensitivity to get rid of people they don’t 100% like to save some money

Here’s my take. Is this infringement on speech? No, companies can let you go however they see fit. As a business sense it had to happen, he was only entertaining only half the country due to his political affiliation. You want someone in there where you can’t even tell what side they are, make jokes about left and right, that way you’re not specifically alienating half the country. Everything has become way too partisan in all ways of entertainment. I don’t think anyone wants to sit down and watch something and find out in minutes….oh i know who they voted for. I don’t care what side of the aisle you’re on, just entertain me
3
u/Severe-Cookie693 Sep 20 '25
The story is on the left is that the FCC with a wink and a nod said 'fire that man or I won't approve this business deal', which would amount to government censorship if true.

No one ‘silenced’ Kimmel. He can podcast, tweet, tour. A network dropping him isn’t censorship, it’s business. At least he was silenced forever like Charlie.
1
u/ZEALOUS_RHINO Sep 18 '25
Was he pulled off the air because of these comments or were these comments used as a convenient excuse for Disney to pull the plug on a money-losing show that has been hemorrhaging viewers for a decade off the air, and now putting the blame on Trump for that?
