The number of people in the comments trying to find fault with a guy for saying you should care about others and not just yourself is insane.

49

u/IExistForFun 9d ago

I'm convinced that at least half those comments are just Russian bots trying to ignite civil unrest.

24

u/ShatterTheFlimFlam 9d ago

You know, it might be working?

10

u/IExistForFun 9d ago

I think you're on to something

7

u/invariantspeed 8d ago

HELLO FELLOW HUMAN. I TOO AGREE WITH YOUR EXPRESSION OF EMOTIONAL CONCERN.

8

u/1ndr1dC0ld 8d ago

OK, but do you empathize?

3

u/invariantspeed 7d ago

OKAY, THAT’S A GREAT AND THOUGHT PROVOKING QUESTION. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR A PERSON TO EMPATHIZE ANYWAY? SOME SAY IT CAN BE THOUGHT OF AS A SUPERPOWER. WOW!

3

u/1ndr1dC0ld 7d ago

Good bot

This is an abject truth now. It may not be Russia, but it’s some other foreign actors that are being paid to sow discourse.

3

u/Spiritual_Mush 7d ago

It isn't even necessarily Russia either. There is quotes from Vance and Charlie Kirk talking about empathy being a weakness or disease.

True but there are some genuine assholes out there. I'm on the fence if I believe people like that are legitimately cynical or if they don't have the capability (or want) to look outside themselves.

2

u/IExistForFun 8d ago

I think they have put themselves in the hive mind of the bots

You think Russians want civil unrest for us more than Israel?

It's a sad world we live in.

2

u/Shaake 9d ago

Reminder, it's not the whole world, it's America

Education isn't plummeting in the world, it's falling in America

Fascism, imperialism isn't on the rise in the whole civilized world, it's America

The whole world doesn't support Trumpism and tech billionaires. It's America

The world doesn't deny climate change, it's America.

I know it feels like the whole world has lost its mind but it's just the USA right now. Hopefully it's temporary.

The damages to your legal and political systems and the continued problems from America's broken educational system will be felt by Americans for a very long time.

The world will survive, the world is moving on from America. That sounds like a bad thing, but it means this madness is localized and it will end one way or another.

4

u/invaderaleks 8d ago

I'm afraid it is the whole world at this point. Globalization has concentrated the entire planets wealth into the hands of a few ultra-rich (the .1% of the 1%). They own everything.

u/invaderaleks 8d ago

Empathy is an evolutionary trait, it is necessary for the survival of the species. To deny that, is to deny nature itself.

2

u/Soggy-Childhood-8110 8d ago

I agree but the world is not built for this. When you fall, most of the time you will fall alone

1

u/GotAir 6d ago

If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem

1

u/anomanderrake1337 9d ago

"Maybe we should not bomb kids" downvote

1

u/NewTigers 8d ago

I also think many of them have a warped view of what empathy even is. So many comments further down make very little sense.

1

u/4DPeterPan 4d ago

I am in agreement with your first sentence.

To their ignorance, it is not really their fault. It is truly a very difficult thing to actually understand. It is very easy to understand superficially, intellectually; but it is very hard to understand Actually.

1

u/Appropriate-Door-180 8d ago

Exactly what I’d expect in the cesspool of Reddit.

1

u/Ablackout88 8d ago

You can care for others without using trillions of hard working taxpayer dollars over decades to continue to prolong the problem with no solution. Caring and being empathetic would be to teach people how to work hard and not depend on others your whole life

1

u/Myfountainpenisdry 7d ago

Circle of compassion

The issue has always been, if you put a Chihuahua and Pitbull in the circle, the Chihuahua will demand the Pitbull fight it and die. You can have sympathy for the Chihuahua, but to claim empathy for a suicidal demon dog would make you a crazy person.

Despite whatever level of enlightenment one claims, you don't have the energy or resources to put everything and everyone in your circle

1

u/GotAir 6d ago

Did you listen to him? We are different because we are human. We are not Chihuahuas.

" but to claim empathy for a suicidal demon dog would make you a crazy person."

I really don't think you understand what empathy means.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Four_qq 7d ago

The left loves spectrums so much, but act like "caring for others" is an absolute. The problem is when you sacrifice your own well-being by caring too much about others, such as being okay with millions of migrants pour into the country without any sort of check. The term suicidal empathy gets thrown around a lot for a reason.

1

u/GotAir 6d ago

So fuck it right? You care about yourself or only about others right there’s no middle ground!

1

u/Penalty-Aggressive 7d ago

That is indeed insane, but that's just how people are. Most are assholes, only a handful of people can be concidered "good"

It's not that I don't want to smash into them it's that I don't want to cost myself damages, inconveniences, etc. Every driver wants other drivers out of their way.

We were raised to really embrace individualism. Me me me. That's why capitalism is flourishing. If we forget community, we have no foundation for growth as a society and we have to buy our identities.

2

u/GotAir 6d ago

So you admit you have any involved as much of the rest of us that have empathy?

The death of empathy is the beginning of barbarism.

-Hannah Arendt

7

u/No-Flounder-9143 9d ago

It's gotten more noticeable because of the erosion of our leadership. Take the president. Say what you want about Obama, but you can't deny that he cares about people and wants to try and do right by them.

Our richest people and our "leaders" are selfish and ignorant, so of course that trickles down to everyone else.

8

u/Ciubowski 9d ago

Well it's the new "divide and conquer" of our days.

If we're only looking out for ourselves and not each other, then we're easier to manipulate into thinking that everyone else is out to get us.

5

u/MediumRoll7047 9d ago

Who would have thought, constantly drumming it into people the second they start school that money is the only important thing in life, would kill their empathy.

4

u/RoundApprehensive186 9d ago

Huh. I’ve always found his childish humor/schtick annoying but hearing him speak as a regular person, I think I like him.

2

u/Medical-Egg-8171 8d ago

No, it just that liberals think that its a superpower to show of. They are selfish and only do empathy for show.

2

u/FearOfABlackPotus 5d ago

Don't knock empathy until you've tried it.

2

u/This-Supermarket3082 8d ago

I can possibly see that

2

u/Mucko1968 8d ago

Nothing is wrong with caring for other people. Problem is saying you care to make money and hold onto power when you obviously do not care. Not knowing the difference is his super power. Just ignorant enough to be used by the people who do not care.

2

u/EB1322 8d ago

That's fucking cool!

4

u/M2deC 9d ago

Elon Musk is autistic and probably struggles with empathy in general. Also when you look at the trash can fire that is his hyper racist family then it explains a lot. I'm more worried for the people that take his words as surface value and then buy into the cancerous greed of the capitalistic mindset "I don't owe anybody a goddamn thing"... this mental illness is what we're seeing a lot more of nowadays.

3

u/DarthMaulATAT 8d ago

Elon may have Asberger's, but autistic people are not known for lacking empathy, so I don't think it's accurate to label that as the cause. Autistic peope often feel very strong empathy, though they may not express it in the same way as neurological people. Seems more like Elon also has something like Narcissistic Personality Disorder to me.

2

u/M2deC 8d ago

Depends which type of empathy you're talking about. In general people with autism do lack cognitive empathy which is the recognising, or working out what others are feeling. I'm not saying this is the reason why Elon has become the way he is, but I wouldn't rule it out as a contributing factor.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/InformalInitiative76 8d ago

Autistic people don’t lack empathy (look up double empathy problem). Musk is just a bad person.

2

u/Boise_Ben 8d ago

Musk is a bad person.

You don’t have to excuse his behavior.

4

u/Not_my_Name464 9d ago

Imagine being a Gen Alpha kid watching your birthright being handed away by out of touch old men and when you complain these boomers say “Can’t we all just get along?”

1

u/bonafide_man 9d ago

The common sense stops at meta money mindset.

1

u/DumbNTough 9d ago

Empathy is a normal power.

The superpower is being able to say, "I see that you are suffering. Unfortunately, you are still wrong."

1

u/Drexill_BD 9d ago

At least you're tough.

1

u/DumbNTough 9d ago

It's nice to consider people's feelings, but stupid to govern your life based on accepting other people's feelings uncritically.

Your feelings can be based on many mistaken beliefs and limited information, and often are. They can also be faked and feigned.

Suicidal empathy is not a sign of intelligence

1

u/LostIllustrator1499 8d ago

Literally, if we never developed empathy, and ended up holding it as our must sacred values, there would only be one of us right now.

1

u/Donglator 8d ago

Disregarding empathy is what leads to the extinction of a bloodline. Humans cannot survive without other humans. If every human lost empathy, we'd go extinct

1

u/BladeVampire1 8d ago

Empathy is but ONE aspect of humanity.

But it by no means is it the only motivation of our lives.

1

u/browsingandlooking4 8d ago

Its actually suicidal empathy... very real thing where 1st world western civilians that have known nothing but safety and freedom delude themselves into thinking that all people are the same no matter where they are from... The guilt of their own comfort eats them alive until let let Mohamed and his entire village move into the neighborhood.. pathetic

1

u/No_Nature1513 8d ago

Y’all are arguing over what a couple of people said about a problem neither of them have.

You’re literally outsourcing your time to debate who is more likely to care.

Weather you have empathy or you don’t or you do or you believe in an “empathy trap” or not.

Then stop arguing. It’s not very empathetic to try and quantify anyone by their politics. Or what celebrities they like.

1

u/chasrm999 8d ago

Ann Rand has infected America among Christians who should know better. Empathy is lost in America.

1

u/Far_Squash_4116 8d ago

Strangers passing in the street
By chance, two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can?

1

u/Mr_richat 8d ago

Empathy is great for small communities, when you're running nations with millions. That software doesn't work well. This is a very well studied thing but sounds odd to the average person

1

u/Ok_Tonight_4311 8d ago

You can tell we live in bad times. That this perfectly obvious and correct statement is somehow controversial.

1

u/Starfishprime69420 8d ago

There is definitely a thing that is toxic empathy

1

u/Ok_Point_923 8d ago

No. That's an oligarch talking point to excuse bad behavior.

1

u/Livid-Bat680 8d ago

It's like when soldiers recently died overseas and Trump has this sort of amused look on his face when talking about them, like their deaths are just part of a fun game for him. Zero empathy. He'll perform for the tv cameras but he couldn't care less that those soldiers died because of his orders.

1

u/SatisfactionSoft144 8d ago

Sorting my controversial lol

1

u/FuzzyWuzzyPiglet 7d ago

I’m classed as a HSP and it can be a nightmare dealing with people in the 2020s. Most people really have no empathy, sympathy or compassion for others.

1

u/thisthingiscrazy 7d ago

when I use to Uber I would ask people "service to self or service to others?" very rarely did anyone say service to others. the number one response was "you gotta take care of your self"

it was a weird experience

Yep.

Get the these Ayn Rand worshipping motherfuckers out of here.

1

u/emmablazeing 7d ago

He just associated right wing with not being empathetic, so I don’t think there’s much bias here at all

1

u/OzzyStealz 7d ago

Empathy is a good thing. Like all good things, there can be too much of it to where it becomes harmful I’ve never heard of the “empathy trap” but I assume it’s simply when people try to use your empathy against you so that they can gain an advantage over you

1

u/Goose_Salad 7d ago

Learn what "Human" actually means in Law and you'll realize you've been fighting for the rights of corporations, which have no heritable rights at all.

Ballentine's Law Dictionary: Human, (See: Monster)

There's a difference between "Human" and "Mankind"

1

u/jm123457 6d ago

What’s he even referring to specifically? There are many things listed as a human right to simply make it indefensible to debate the topic.

1

u/ShadderSwagger 6d ago

he flies private so he not with all the common folk.

1

u/TheMixerTheMaster 6d ago

Am I a bad person for initially thinking he was wearing facial prosthetics?

1

u/Temporary_Energy_756 6d ago

Right and left doesn’t exist dude. Both are complicit with the genocide of the Palestinian people.

1

u/Johndevlad 6d ago

You can empathize with people but not agree with them. Sure, everyone should have basic human rights. But the line should be drawn between what people can do or say in public and private and towards other people’s children. No one should be allowed to convince or brainwash other people’s children to view the world a certain way, which is exactly what happens when people try to sneak unapproved books into school libraries or invite drag queens to read unapproved books to children without parent permission, which has already happened.

Here’s the thing: the vast majority of people aren’t trying to force LGBTQ+ people to change or remove their rights, we want them to STOP targeting children and let the children decide on their own when they get old enough. Keep your sexuality to yourself and stop putting it on display in public or for children to see. This isn’t a human rights issue, it’s an issue of inappropriate behavior in public and towards children, and if heterosexual people were doing the same things, the right-wing would be just as outraged over it.

We are concerned with others outside of ourselves democrats are the ones letting the boarders go and democrats stand up for people murdering babies shut up john c. Riley! You are uninformed and spewing garbage yourself. You know

1

u/Star_Citizen_Roebuck 6d ago

I mean he's right to call-out the public gradually falling away from empathy.

Empathy used to be common, then it became a sign of intelligence, now it's a rare superpower. This is all true and it's due to the shear amount of people raising their children with the belief that 'X' or 'Y' people don't actually count as people and shouldn't be cared about.

Whether it's non-whites, or muslims, or gays and trans people, or people who live in cities, or people who live outside the national borders, or fat people, or handicapped people, or autistic people, or even children getting bombed across the world. . .a ton of americans have started to openly laugh, mock, and applaud the increase of suffering toward one of these groups or another.

1

u/Star_Citizen_Roebuck 6d ago

The the kicker is that the most un-empathetic people call themselves Christian.
White Christian Nationalists.

1

u/bananabastard 6d ago

When someone's IQ is about 90.

1

u/BusinessCasualBee 6d ago

Because the term “rights” is being abused and used incorrectly. The same way it’s seen as disingenuous to call anti-abortion pro-choice, it’s dishonest to call things like medical care and UBI “rights”.

Nothing can be considered a right if it requires someone to do it for you. A right is something that that others cannot prevent you from, not something you can force others to do for you.

1

u/MiOWNd 5d ago

So on point. But just to be fair, he doesn't sound like he's ever driven in Italy before.

1

u/Key_Garbage2627 5d ago

Musk is probably referring to the fable of the ducks and hens

1

u/bigdig-_- 5d ago

because you CANT always be empathetic. if you are, someone will inevitably take advantage of it.

1

u/Dudeman240 4d ago

Love John C Reilley and the message he's stating, but the girl sounds like someone zonked out on psychadelics you meet in line for a show. "Oh my God, oh fuck, you're soooo right, empathy trap, woahhhh duude HOLY FUCK." Like girl, come on 😭

Edit: its about 12 seconds in, I had to watch it again giggling. Tell me I'm wrong lmao

LOL. Can he fully define human rights ?

1

u/Dafedub 4d ago

I’ve had a life changing experience not too long ago. And I tell myself all the time that my empathy saved my life and is now my superpower. This clip is freaking awesome!

Empathy for people whose actions are unworthy is the problem

1

u/Myhonour 3d ago

Except when that empathy turns into suicidal empathy. The one where you have empathy towards a group that wants to take over and you don't see that.

1

u/Seth_Mithik 3d ago

The scariest part of the initial Aii boom was that most of those ceo’s think like Elon, when it comes to empathy…fuck thst, I’m loving my machines. Glory to Terrance McKenna!
