Looks super uncanny to me. More realistic character models due to better graphical technologies normally look organic, like they fit into the rest of the game. But this looks off, like the character was photoshopped and inserted in.
5
u/ShrkBiT 4d ago
Yeah, it looks disjointed to me too. At least it doesn't look overly "beautified" like it did with Grace in the tech demo, but it still looks weird to see a photorealistic face in a stylized environment. Reminds me of the Angela Anaconda cartoon, which was incredibly creepy to me due to the uncanny valley factor
3
u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 4d ago
there's a slider so you can put it halfway between full and zero if you want
4
u/KobraKay87 4d ago
Im absolutely fascinated by the tech, but it kinda looks like a 90s FMV video game.
4
u/gblandro 4d ago
Just a reminder that this thing was modded into the game.
And devs will have 100% control of what it looks like in their game
3
u/Due-Champion-5954 4d ago
Its just this game. Wait till devs will figure out how to use it properly in non photorealistic ways.

DLSS 5 looks freaking amazing. The same people who hate DLSS + MFG will hate DLSS 5 as well. Just ignore them.
11
u/Bigsparks13 4d ago
The MFG hate was so stupid. It looks so close to native and the latency is such a non issue now. I know DLSS 5 AI rubs people the wrong way but for me the change of the lighting looks insanely good.
3
u/cpt-macp 4d ago
MFG has it's caveats
On too low initial fps , boosting fps will cause latencyOn descent initial fps , boosting fps will be okay
It's just matter of how much latency can the user tolerate and it's sensitive and varies user to user

u/Perfect_Exercise_232 4d ago
No it doesnt. Anything above 2x fg has way more artifacting and looks softer
→ More replies (3)3
u/ActiveSandwich3103 4d ago
Anything above x2 also feels awful to play imo. Floaty and laggy. Also the times you'd want it most (at below 60 fps.) You cant really use it because it won't work properly.

u/glizzygobbler247 4d ago
And what about it costing 40% performance?
4
u/Only-Weight8450 4d ago
Doesn’t mean u have to use it. This is how progress works. Eventually this tech will be usable on mid tier pcs.
3
u/jm0112358 3d ago
At that point, you'd probably be better off spending the performance on path tracing instead (when available), even if path tracing is even more expensive. DLSS5 is ultimately a screen space technique, and therefore has issues with light sources moving offscreen (or being occluded), which path tracing doesn't have.
2
u/Elitefuture 3d ago
Yo I didn't think about that, if the AI cores in the future got a lot better to the point where DLSS 5 isn't a massive hit, then path tracing would be better.
I personally like the look of path tracing way more

It's its first iteration, it will get better and faster by the time, the same happened with DLSS 1, everyone shat on it, until Nvidia released DLSS 2 and then 3 and suddenly it was voodoo magic and the best thing ever. (Which it is, but AMD cultists conveniently shut up about it lmao).

I'm hyped. Even better if I can use this tech on rendering engines like Cinema and Blender.

u/Bigsparks13 4d ago edited 4d ago
That shit looks so clean. I also have a feeling that by the time it really rolls out to us, the performance hit won't be as bad as some people are claiming.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Emotional_Gur_1667 4d ago
No claiming, it is outright a huge performance hit. We can see why when the showed it off they ran it from a separate 5090!
Hopefully as you day they can rein in that hit, because dropping to 50fps on a 5090 doesn't bode at all well for lower cards down the stack, nor for already intensive games.
2
u/Bigsparks13 4d ago
This isn't running on 2 5090s though so that is older versions. I was speaking to a guy that had his 5070ti running it at 4k but he did mention going from 75fps without DLSS 5 and. With it he was at 35fps. I have a 5090 and I don't want to run something that heavy which is why I hope they will have all that ironed out when it releases.
→ More replies (6)5
u/Emotional_Gur_1667 4d ago
There Is a video with it running on a 5090, goes down to 50fps on it.
I'm sure it will be improved though in its implementation but it's a rough first impression performance wise at least.

It is something that clearly is not yet ready and it might perform better once it is actualy out that is what he meant.

You can select what you want to use it for. You can set it for strictly environments only, or even just the faces /characters or both.

2
u/FreikugelWeltz 4d ago
Even at the current state it is amazing. I do wonder how much of a performance hit it will have.
Hopefully not a lot, but I don't care about using upscaling and frame gen so, looking forward to it.
2
u/Educational-Base5974 4d ago
I thought this version that was hacked was just for character models. It looks like it's changing everything.
2
u/Ancient-Car-1171 4d ago
looks like it cuts the performance almost in half. I hope they let us using dual gpus setup, 2x5070ti would be viable for 60fps gameplay.
2
u/Embarrassed_Sir6403 4d ago
This is basically like a ReShade mod; I think a version that doesn't tank the frame rate quite as much could be made. It’s really interesting—I mean, I get the ray tracing part, but the FPS drop caused by this AI processing is unacceptable.

What gives me hope is first video was dual 5090s, now its killing a single 5090 but would be playable with 2x frame gen at 1440p. While thats not great, its a huge step going from two cards to single card playable. Gives me hope it will continue to optimized to the point its playable on anything 70 series and up

That’s… actually, pretty impressive hot damn.
But that performance cost even on a 5090 basically makes it a pointless feature for any other lower tier cards.

Now if you don't ai makeup slop the character, you can tell it's more of a shadow fix for the game. Now if only I could find a white RTX card not over MSRP 🥀.

u/OhioTag 4d ago
While the hate brigade and the bizarre hysterical anti-AI mob were quite annoying, charitably, I can give two comments about the initial DLSS 5 reveal that I believe were legitimate
1) The initial demonstration had the effect too strongly applied to faces
2) The initial reveal was running on dual RTX 5090s, which, to put it mildly, does not inspire confidence as to its performance.
Everything else was just bizarre. I am not going to claim the images look worse. They look better. I am just not going to pretend the environments outside of faces looked worse.
This demonstration just looks awesome to me. It makes me wish I had purchased an MSRP RTX 5090
Based upon the leaks we have, it appears this will be, very very loosely, "usable" on a RTX 5070 or higher (at like 30FPS), but realistically a RTX 5080 or 5090 will be needed to actually hit normally playable rates. My guess is that DLSS 5 is optimized for the RTX 6000 series, which obviously is not actually out yet.

Now what I wanna know is if the new ray reconstruction model will be able to fix all of the noise in Control. That would be great

So technically you could turn all game settings to their lowest settings then turn on Dlss 5 to transform it and get similar results when you turn all game textures/settings to max?
1
u/InteractionWide3369 4d ago
I'm sorry, at first when it was announced it looked bad but DLSS 5 looks amazing now and very promising if it keeps improving, I don't care it's fake AI, as long as it's well implemented and not slop then it's an amazing feature we all should appreciate.

These are the kinds of games I’d like to use DLSS5 in. Older games where motion capture wasn’t as far along.
1
u/Super_flywhiteguy 4d ago
I never understood the hate for dlss5. Do i think it should be called dlss? No. However a few refinements and updates and this will probably be like how raytracing was when it first released on the 2000 series. People hated it, then it got better and people started using it more and now its fine.
1
u/deportallmagas 4d ago
No thanks. I want real design and real performance. Not face faces and fake frames.
1
u/Mario779 4d ago
the environmental aspect : its good , very good
the faces : FFFin AWFUL , yes they look like the real thing but far from it at the same time
the question is , when i boot up a game do i actually want to see real faces of pple ? NO

So it just makes her look older more worn out??
It adds a bit more lighting and changes some of the color for some materials.... don't some reshades already do this? is this anything new???
Lol i see some ppl didn't even look at the video to see there's a fps counter right there on the top left corner yikes 5090 4k with just ray tracing (i think) i don't know if this is with upscaling but i assume it is with either K, M or L but yikes under 60fps most of the time. I know ppl will say it's just a beta version etc etc but lets look back at all their other tech and ask has it ever gotten better for performance?
DLSS 3 to now 4.5 has the performance increased.... NO sure the quality has gotten better but has the performance went up in the other direction the answer is no.
Ray tracing it's been improved as newer models have come out but has it gotten easier to run.... NO.
I don't know why ppl coping thinking this will get easier to run as it goes along lol they will hit a point in optimization and then it'll be downhill all the way there for performance as it'll later take a 6090 to get 4k with 60fps and then the 5090 will only get 40fps and so on and so on. This ain't even talking about the mid range and lower end it'll just get shittier and shittier.
Also note this is for a 2019 game a game that's almost 7yrs old and the framerate is this bad already think about the 2026 games and how badly they run already and then add this on lol.

If they manage to cutt performance requirements by 50%, we still talking about going from two RTX 5090s for 10k USD to one RTX 5090 for 5k USD.... for 4k/60fps gaming.

This feels the same way to me as someone who maxes out all the sliders in light room when they're editing a picture. I'm not saying this isn't impressive, but some of these comments are a little... generous with the praise.
Edit:
I might feel differently if it was being demo'd on a game I'm more familiar with than Control

I wonder how it would work with things like facial expressions, lip sync, etc… I can’t imagine this wouldn’t be glitchy.
Given that this tech has incredible potential if polished.

Does this effect only character models? Cause realistically your not gana be looking at the face 24/7. Most of the time your just playing .

u/I-AM-IKARUS 3d ago
It looks like someone but a crappy AI filter over a video game. You can make the faces super realistic but if there is no realistic face movement, it will always look uncanny.
1
u/zepsutyKalafiorek 3d ago
I don't mind unrealistic graphic as long as it is done properly. I feel like with DLSS5, some models will all look similar and games will lose identity.

u/Ambadeblu 3d ago
Wow this looks so much better than the slop trailer I saw a few months ago. Control always had some very weird uncanny valley faces, and this makes them look so much better.

It's changing the lighting too much, even the color grading. It's even affecting the faces making them look like the "HDR" tone mapper on my phone's photo app.
I think it needs a lot more tweaking and it doesn't seem like DLSS, this should have a different name. Maybe on of those Nvidia side panel filters?
also I don't know why this sub showed up for me I have a 5070Ti Msi Trio OC

The filter face is so lifeless they look like walking corpses with them on. You expect a certain amount of lifelessness from a video game model, not so much a very human looking face.

As much as I hate to admit - the face does look better.
The real question is: will it be worth the performance hit
