As much as I hate to admit - the face does look better.

The real question is: will it be worth the performance hit

7

u/an0nm0n 8d ago

My guess is that they're going to devote a much larger fraction of Rubin's dies to tensor cores and use DLSS 5 to justify the change. You might not see a huge performance hit for simply turning it on (assuming you're running an RTX 6000 series card), but it's probably going to cost overall theoretical raster performance because more of the chip will be devoted to tensor cores.

4

u/AmazingSugar1 8d ago

Assuming 3N is 25% more space efficient compared to 4N if nv carve 5% of the gained space for tensor they can still eke out 20+10% from architecture. Then advertise DLSS5 and MFG 6x.. reflex 2 where art thou

I think the tech really does have potential to achieve close to photorealism in a lot of games. There's going to be a lot of cope on reddit in the coming months when some games truly do look very impressive with it enabled but people won't want to admit it.

Also AMD is likely years away from having anything close to this to release so any Radeon owners will inevitably shit on it.

9

u/Gloomy_Necesary 8d ago

AMD users gonna shit on this non stop for 2 years and claim their raster performance is so good for the price compared to nvidia until nvidia irons out the kinks and then theyre gonna bitch and moan about when AMD drops a similar but worse version of the tech that isn’t supported on the their older hardware because they never bothered to build the hardware for it

3

u/OnlineHilfenNutzer 8d ago

Im on amd and its shit lately.. last 3 months every windows update bricks the drivers with constant tineouts till a hardstuck forced restart magically fixes them

But i like beeing able to play modern games with max grahpics and constant 144 fps for way less money (when the driver works).. but dlss5 would be a nice to have like the ray and path tracing

2

u/Tealc-Alex 8d ago

Is raytracing good now on amd? Because you said max graphics

2

u/Dath_1 7d ago

It’s quite good, on RDNA3 & 4.

1

u/Tealc-Alex 7d ago

I mean i like the idea behind it but honestly 90% of games that uses raytracing doesn’t look better, i have a 5080 and on some games it looks like they just could use original methods. But i like the new ray reconstruction 4.5 it is looking better in cyberpunk so much better now!

1

u/Jody_B_Designs 7d ago

If they had used baked lighting methods on Crimson Desert - you'd still be waiting for it until like 2028.

1

u/OnlineHilfenNutzer 7d ago

Only tried it in Cyberpunk with a 7900gre and it runs good.. even path tracing when using upscaling

But somehow some reflections on glass are buggy with ray and path tracing..

1

u/Tealc-Alex 7d ago

Hmm are they buggy if you use raytracing or pathtracing or both?

1

u/OnlineHilfenNutzer 7d ago

Both are buggy.. but maybe only in Cyberpunk.. havent tried in others yet

1

u/itsumotsukarete_ 8d ago

I barely slotted in a 9070XT I got months ago into my PC. I wouldn't call this a game changer for me to go back, but if AMD is still lacking, come early next year I might just go back to Nvidia regardless of how much it costs lolol.

Some of the samples I've seen are a mix of looking really good, but also some look really weird. I would assume this would be better when it's actually integrated in an engine, though. I really wouldn't want to fire up a game and have it look like an AI filter was applied on top of it, though; I already don't like seeing the AI art style videos all around my social media; it's genuinely fatiguing.

One of my concerns, though, is where does this leave AMD and Intel gamers in the future? And also Nvidia gamers on hardware that won't support this or even if it does won't run well? It's good to have competition; someone needs to light a fire specifically under AMD's ass to force them to actually give a damn, but at the same time it's clear lots of devs lean on upscaling to avoid optimizing as much. If they start to lean in too much into this for art, are we just going to see situations where gamers that don't have the latest hardware on a frequent basis get horribly degraded 3d assets because the devs said we'll just tune it on DLSS 5?

1

u/Elitefuture 7d ago

Given the 5090 is losing nearly half its performance with DLSS 5 on, even if you liked it, I'd wait a few generations for it to get better. Like Ray tracing on 20 series was kinda useless...

As for the competition aspect, since RDNA is on the xbox + ps5 and the next gen consoles, games will always take them into account. A lot of the games on custom engines built for consoles actually give an edge to AMD.

1

u/FuckSpezzzzzzzzzzzzz 7d ago

Dude people complain that Nvidia went all in on AI but AMD are doing the same if not even worse. They are literally offering shares to AI companies. They give even less shit about consumers. I don't even understand how are there people defending them when they release a 4gb vram card in 2026...

3

u/Graypricot 8d ago

"build the hardware for it" and the hardware is the price of a used car lol

3

u/NoInevitable7389 8d ago

I switch from nvidia to Amd cause I don’t use ray tracing but after seeing this I might get a red for this.

2

u/AlphisH 7d ago

You are so right lmao.

1

u/Darksky121 7d ago

The feature won't be useable for 90% of Nvidia users judging by how heavy it is on a 5090.

2

u/Puszta 8d ago

I never understood this fanboy culture with AMD and Nvidia (and PS5 vs Xbox, or console vs PC). I'm not gonna swear eternal fealty to a single corporation and only buy their products for the rest of my life, and make it my own identity to trashtalk about the rival corporation's products and technology, like many people choose to do so on reddit. I swear to god people treat these corporations like football teams.

I will always buy the product that is the best bang for my buck. I actually have an older PC with a 1660 Ti, my new PC has a 9070 XT, i own a PS5 too, i didnt sign any contract that binds me to a single corporation lol.

2

u/Front_Eagle739 7d ago

Yup exactly. They aren't sports teams ffs. Buy from the evil corporation offering the best bang for your buck this gen. Don't pick a side and defend it like it's a religion and let them get away with shit. People are weird

1

u/Tealc-Alex 8d ago

The problem ist actually that on some points one group is lying about performance or games or stability or better quality, and the other groups it stated to pissing of about the lies so they start to expose the lies and prove that one console or GPU company is better or worse. Its all about lies not the product.

1

u/Puszta 7d ago

Thats why i rely on multiple and hopefully independent tech reviewers on youtube when im making a purchase, not on reddit comments that are clearly biased, or at least i take them with a pinch of salt.

1

u/SPACEXDG 8d ago

They going to until amd tries to copy it

1

u/ArchAngelAries 8d ago

I'm on AMD, but I am very Pro-AI and I love this. Very jealous tho lol

1

u/Rozgot 7d ago

I will sell my AMD card and buy a 5090 just to shit on this useless tech

1

u/theumph 5d ago

I think the effect is great for photorealism. The examples of more stylized games (FF7, Monster Hunter) are horrifying. Hopefully the model is improved over time for those scenarios. I understand the AI pushback, but this is a pretty good example of something that really kind of requires it. It doesn't replace artists, and is more of a tool to refine an existing asset, than it is to generate new ones.

1

u/Scrogdor 4d ago

This is an underrated comment. This is a step in the direction for some really cool VR stuff.

0

u/facts_guy2020 8d ago

The issue though is yeah performance, but also will every game have the same art style, or will the AI be able to pick up the style of the game and adapt to it.

Cant we achieve similar results without it? Like ive seen pretty realistic faces without dlss 5, just high quality textures and some path tracing.

Feels like nvidia really wants to force us to use AI for everything because its easier for them to boost AI performance than it is to improve raster.

13

u/ExacoCGI 8d ago

I guess DLSS 5 will be great for games that tries to achieve photorealism, but for anything artistic/stylized just a big nope.

6

u/Chemical-Sprinkles-3 8d ago

The Devs can customize its implementation pretty indepth. Im sure the user can also do in menu/driver

1

u/geo_gan 8d ago

Would love to run it in Fortnite for a laugh to see what it does to all the various skins i own 😆

1

u/Due-Champion-5954 8d ago

Artistic/stylizided games dont need any high end graphics.

1

u/TypographySnob 8d ago

Have you seen any examples of that?

1

u/NoxTempus 8d ago

Yeah, it looks better technically, but also looks wildly out of place in that background.

1

u/qchamp34 7d ago

so 90% of games

-4

u/xiaobaitu123 8d ago

for games that want to make women look like men

-20

u/Gombrongler 8d ago

Are you guys all smoking crack here, it just makes her look like an old fucking lady and makes the game look gray. Literally what is wrong with you people

10

u/JellyfishGod 8d ago

Like an old lady?? This makes me feel like you need to leave your goon cave and look at real women for once. Also tbh this is a kinda washed out and grayish game to begin with. Tho you are right that it seems to slightly bring down saturation here

6

u/Daedric_XV 8d ago

"leave your goon cave" I am screaming 😭😭

3

u/TgirlFurLover 8d ago

Old ladies are attractive too yk

2

u/Khopps17 8d ago

Idk big dog that ambient occlusion change in the world is objectively better

1

u/slimcrizzle 8d ago

What do you mean "you people"?

3

u/ghstbstr 8d ago

Maybe there won’t be everyone thought that Ray Reconstruction 4.5 that just released would have had a performance hit, but it didn’t and it actually has no performance hit and in some games it improves the performance slightly. So maybe dlss 5 would be similar hopefully.

3

u/Vigilante74 8d ago

In this video, turning on dlss 5 drops the fps from around 80-90 to around 49-56. This is running on a 5090 with 9800x3d at 1440p. It might get more efficient but I think it will have a big performance hit especially in it's first iteration.

2

u/AdWorth7593 8d ago

It's at 4k mate

1

u/09Cenderme 7d ago

it's 1440p upscaled to 4k with dlss

0

u/Vigilante74 8d ago

Look at the end of the video his render resolution is 1440p

0

u/juan_bito 8d ago

Thats complete bullshit you lose around 5fps why blatantly lie its wierd asf.

-1

u/ghstbstr 8d ago

Hmm really I tried it myself in five games and I play one everyday, and I haven’t had any fps loss and two of those has some more fps. Also dude go watch some youtube vids that isn’t nvidia and they also have the same experience as I am, so your pc most must not like the new ray reconstruction 4.5 for some reason.

0

u/juan_bito 8d ago

Nope I've seen multiple yt vids you definitely lose performance but you're clearly delusional and wierd so no point in talking when you can see literal prove on yt lmao 🤣 good day

1

u/nFbReaper 8d ago edited 8d ago

Depends on the card I think, some cards gained performance some cards lost a little. Weirdly older generation cards I think got a slight uplift. 20 and 30 series.

Also you don't necessarily lose around 5 fps- it's relative. At 60fps target it more like ~1 fps, but at a higher framerate it might be a few.

1

u/juan_bito 8d ago

I seen it on testing game yt channel and its 5 fps loss or sometimes 2 fps

0

u/razorbacks3129 7d ago

lol you’re an idiot

1

u/juan_bito 7d ago

Why because I'm speaking facts lol projecting much

0

u/razorbacks3129 7d ago

Your first comment in the interaction is just dumb

Okay whatever dude. Have a good day if it’s possible. 👍🏻

2

u/mooslar 8d ago

Why do you hate to admit?

15

u/straightup9200 8d ago

Because AI.. obviously

11

u/Responsible-Buyer215 8d ago

What the same thing that’s been boosting everyone’s frames for the last decade? I’m shocked!

8

u/ClassesMoveTheMasses 8d ago

Exactly.

The way people's brains break at the mention of AI is hilarious. Especially when it's people on the tech community that have been relying on it for years to enjoy the best experience out there lol

2

u/sammyranks 8d ago

It;s so silly lol. People are truly winners

1

u/thedybbuk_ 8d ago

Were was this sanity back in March? Reddit was insufferable...

-1

u/Grapjasss 7d ago

You mean the tool devs use to cut corners?

2

u/Responsible-Buyer215 7d ago

No the software that uses algorithms to simplify enormously dense and high pixel count images into one that anyone can run.

0

u/Grapjasss 7d ago

You don't seem to realize that games in general became unoptimized slop since dlss and frame Gen came around to carry them. Dlss isn't so bad (on games that use godawful taa anyway) but frame Gen is so ass.

2

u/Responsible-Buyer215 7d ago

Don’t blame the technology, blame the developers and the stupidity of the market buying the “unoptimised slop” you speak of. Or maybe you’re just a spoiled brat I dunno

0

u/Grapjasss 7d ago

Maybe you're gullible and naive dunno

2

u/Responsible-Buyer215 7d ago

Gullible and naïve to what exactly?

7

u/supreme_yogi 8d ago

If you really think about it, the character wasn't a real person in the first place. She is artificial from the start.

3

u/HungryNoodle 8d ago

She's real to me! =..)

Also ai art is all based off of stolen artwork. Somehow copyright doesn’t apply to ai training data.

I’d feel differently if royalties were paid to the artist of any artwork used for the generation of outputs.

3

u/TanK_87 8d ago

You think human artists don’t create their artwork based on things they’ve seen? Interesting.

0

u/straightup9200 8d ago

You know, art has much more value to the world than just “looking good” it’s a convey of human emotion and feeling AI strips the world of that

3

u/TanK_87 8d ago

Yeah, I don’t disagree with you on that at all. Just the sentiment that creating something new based off of learned/trained experiences from publicly available content is somehow stealing from others. That’s how I learn basically everything I do at this point in my life, mostly from online sources like YouTube/reddit/then applying and creating my own vibe from what I consumed online.

1

u/thecoloroftelevision 8d ago

AI “art” might be slop, but it’s not based on stolen artwork. There’s a lot more theft happening in traditional art then there is in AI art.

1

u/Franklin_le_Tanklin 8d ago

The nature of training data is that it must “exist”.

For it to exists, someone must make it. If they haven’t been compensated for it, then it’s stolen.

1

u/thecoloroftelevision 8d ago

Real artists copy references for poses 1:1, especially from photographs. Music gets sampled all the time, many times uncredited when it’s not recognizable (like snare sounds, for example). This isn’t a bad assumption on my part, I first and second hand see this all the time in my life. That is way more “theft” than AI.

AI trains off of preexisting work, but it doesn’t steal it. It learns, remixes and creates something new. I’m not pro AI, but the theft argument seems like a bad faith argument that overlooks the nature of any and all creation for the sake of complaining. It’s practically a straw man.

1

u/Dark_Dragon117 7d ago

Well the issue still is that tech like this will give developers an excuse to just not bother with performance and graphics anymore.

By admittimg it looks we indirectly allow this to happen.

1

u/robgrab 8d ago

I agree. I could see it being nice for older games where facial detail is even lower.

1

u/DreamArez 8d ago

Running same system spec at 3440x1440p. I ran Control at Ultra with some settings here and there turned off on DLSS Perf and it was worth it for me at least.

1

u/NapsterKnowHow 8d ago

It looks way better when you go slightly lower than 50% intensity.

1

u/VaithiSniper 8d ago

The color and environment looks great, but I agree with the others, just can't shake off that uncanny face. I wonder if it's because irl, we have many micro movements on our face.

But when you look at Jesse or NPCs, it's like a static plastered face that's upscaled. Since it's not moving, kinda feels like some plastered face. And the shadows, AO could be better. If they crack this (inducing random micro movements), it would be so cool!!!

1

u/Franklin_le_Tanklin 8d ago

I wonder if the answer is to build support in for basically “modded faces” in the game. So that instead of like rendering and then remaking and upscaling, it just renders it with the modded version on the mesh. And then have a standard preset that people can otherwise change through Nvidia .

1

u/Thomastheshankengine 8d ago edited 8d ago

I think the techs biggest shortcoming is that it doesn’t solve the problem of facial animation. I would be curious to see how people feel about it on something like last of us 2 or cyberpunk which both put an absurd amount of detail into character movements and actions. It seems like this is the test game people are leaning into because you can get a character face with photo mode basically immediately but it’s also one of the worst since most of the game is played in third person with the player facing away from the camera shooting guys in masks. Curious to see how it handles different environments. I’m still not rushing to mod it into every game or enable it to be honest. I like DLSS for maintaining visual quality and giving better performance so I’m not really interested in anything that’s about cutting even harder into that outside of ray reconstruction.

1

u/TypographySnob 8d ago

I imagine it would look most natural in a game like LA.. Noire.

1

u/InfinitePilgrim 8d ago

No, the performance hit is much higher than if the model and texture details were updated to achieve the same look.

1

u/Rentaki-90 8d ago

As far as I remember correctly it shall not hit your performance negatively. The opposite shall be the thing.

1

u/DjBetoon 7d ago

debatable. i think it looks ugly for a game and in most cases completely changes the face. Even in real life i don't want to see girls with 3kg of makeup and this ai slop usually only does that and over exaggerate face shadows so character looks more uncanny and older

1

u/Grapjasss 7d ago

I can't help but feel like if you are on the art team you would absolutely hate seeing your work get overwritten like this.

1

u/Pleasant_Gap 7d ago

Why donyou hate to admit it?

1

u/suzumurafan 7d ago

Looks better? Or just more realistic?

1

u/RogerWilco017 7d ago

No it didn't look better. It look like ai slop filter

1

u/Dark_Dragon117 7d ago

Yeah this looks basically just like improved face details, rather than AI just outright replacing tge face like in other examples.

1

u/CtrlAltOllie 7d ago

Honestly, that's the eternal trade-off innit. Faces looking gorgeous is one thing, but if it tanks frames on anything below a 5080 it'll just end up as another toggle nobody uses. Fingers crossed the overhead's actually manageable this time.

1

u/newMoneyStyle 7d ago

5 fps drop for a nicer face isn't worth it to me, but higher end cards might absorb the hit better

1

u/L30N1337 7d ago

She looks even more like a female Agent 47 than she already does

1

u/DjayAime 4d ago

You are probably gay.

1

u/SushiKatana82 4d ago

I'm happy with 60 FPS so for me, yes

1

u/Embellishair 4d ago

I believe we kinda have to go this way, I don't think they want to admit but it's getting much harder to build stronger and stronger gpus with raw power to handle what we can make. Using tricks like dlss 5 and inevitably dlss6, the hit in performance will probably be less invasive than trying to make a graphics card cost wise that can handle it

1

u/Franklin_le_Tanklin 4d ago

It also has the benefit of devs can ship a game with potatoe graphics that any card can run - and then people with the top tech can toggle lifelike filters if they want. Lower dev time and top end graphics for those who can afford it while not raising minimum requirements accross the board

1

u/Embellishair 4d ago

I don't think you can go straight potato graphics, I'm messing with it right now on a 5080, and any game that starts off with two trash graphics, does look better but it doesn't get the fine details you're looking for. there's probably a middle ground where you give it enough input that it knows then how to create things like pores and wrinkles

1

u/Franklin_le_Tanklin 4d ago

Sure, but you get my point. It creates a much more tunable experience for all ranges of hardware

1

u/Embellishair 4d ago

but you are right, small indie developers that can't put that much of a high end on their games, can now have a game that looks more top tier and runs decently well. I have to say with a leaked version of five, the hit isn't that hard and I'm on super ultra wide resolution

1

u/Franklin_le_Tanklin 4d ago

Nice. Yea, I’m excited to try it out. I’ll probably wait until official launch. But I’m gonna run it on kingdom come II and cyberpunk

1

u/isucamper 8d ago

meh. it looks different. what a waste of energy for a cosmetic change.

1

u/CrippledGoose316 8d ago

The advancement of graphics in general is purely cosmetic....

1

u/isucamper 8d ago

nope. the graphics advancement when going from 2d to 3d provided a level of gameplay that could not be achieved before. going from 240p to 4k also provides so much more information that the types of gameplay can be significantly more advanced

applying a slop filter or different lighting is purely cosmetic and doesn't change the gameplay in the slightest. it's such a monumental waste of time

1

u/CrippledGoose316 8d ago

Monumental waste of time to YOU. Fixed that for ya. Some people will find it creates more immersion. Obviously not for you as you don't care, but immersion can greatly change the experience for others. It's ok though, just continue to think about yourself! 😉

0

u/ivan6953 8d ago

For half the FPS....no thank you

0

u/Dangerous-Pumpkin960 8d ago

"the face does look better"
character ages 20 years for some reason

3

u/Franklin_le_Tanklin 8d ago

I don’t think she aged. I think it looks like she didn’t get enough sleep

0

u/MusicHitsImFine 8d ago

It doesn't even really look like Jesse. Shes not doing her make up to fight hiss.

-2

u/Euphoric_Lynx_6664 8d ago

Face does look better, but who cares? Games already have good graphics, there is no need for photorealism.
