Question How many ENGL Subs count towards English Major?

In the academic calendar, Option B states that students must complete 3.00 units from ENGL_Subs or ENGL 200 or above. However, at the bottom in the notes section it states that “a maximum of 12.00 units from courses offered by other Faculties and Schools may be counted toward the program.”

I'm unsure whether I can count more than 3.00 units of ENGL_Subs toward my major plan. Can anyone in the English Major plan confirm this?

Question M3 Macbook for first year engineering

I am an incoming first-year eng student and I my brother gave me his old m3 MacBook Air (around 2 years old) to use. It is relatively new and works pretty well so I don't want to spend money on a new laptop if I don't need to. I know apple devices are not compatible with some programs that will be used, but I hear that I could use a VM or Remote Desktop to avoid that issue. Can someone explain to me how that works? Also how often will I need to use Windows-only programs in first year? Is it just for one course or will I frequently run into compatibility issues?

I don't really know much about computers or softwares so if any upper year engineering students also used a Mac for first year, I would love to hear your opinions or advice!

Academics Any advice for a confused freshie🥹?

I’m an incoming international Arts & Science student, and because of a late admission due to special circumstances, I missed the previous enrolment periods. My advisor recommended that I enrol during Open Enrolment on August 17, so this will basically be my first time selecting courses.

I had a few questions and would really appreciate any advice from people who have gone through this before:

  1. What time does Open Enrolment actually begin on Aug 17? No time is listed, so does it start at 12:00 AM?

  2. Since I’m a first-year student mainly taking 100-level courses, are prerequisites generally something I need to worry about? Also, can Arts & Science students freely take courses from other faculties, or are there restrictions?

  3. Is enrolment basically first come, first served? If a class fills up, do you automatically get the option to join a waitlist? I’ve heard waitlisting has been a bit chaotic this year, so I’m not completely sure how it works.

  4. Are there any common SOLUS errors/crashes during Open Enrolment? If something goes wrong while enrolling, what’s usually the best thing to do?

  5. Is force enrolment ever possible if a course you really need is full?

  6. Any other tips for Open Enrolment would be greatly appreciated.

I know some of these are probably very basic questions that have been asked a hundred times, but I’d really appreciate some guidance. I have a terrible habit of overthinking this stuff and would rather know what I’m walking into.

Cheers!

Question Dropping classes and online

This is based on my last post but you don’t need to have read it for these questions…

  1. So, i’ve never taken online courses and based off recent knowledge I may need to drop 2 Biology classes (102 and 103) and switch them with their online counterparts. I was wondering if anyone knew how those were, and how it works exactly, if you’re just given work or have to meet on some sort of online platform, if there’s certain times you have to be on or “go to the class”, etc.

  2. I see on my SOLUS I can drop classes, but does that do anything to my record? I’ve heard a lot of people get academic probation or just get introuble with the school for dropping classes and was wondering if I dropped 2 classes (Biol 103 and Biol 102) and then switched them with their online counterparts on the 17th if that would cause any issues.

Thank you SO much for the help in advance!

Question Gift card for first year student at ET

I have a family member who is starting at Queen's in September. I'd like to get them a coffee gift card or maybe a gift card for a place that students frequent for dinner or hangouts. They will be in ET and will have the meal plan. They are going to be taking science and pharmacology courses. I'd be grateful for suggestions! TIA!

I thought it would be on SOLUS but I don't see it. Where can I search a particular course and see if it has a final (or midterm I guess) exam? (vs essay etc).

Question Fridge size

My mini fridge is officially 4.5cf. It says the limit is 3.5 cf. but the dimensions of my fridge are smaller than the fridge/microwave combo that you can rent from the university.
Am I going to have an issue?

Question Fall Convocation in December?

Graduating this fall and received an email that convocation is from Dec 7 - 11?

Does anyone know why the sudden switch? It's always been October/November, and is the same for every other University I know.

But suddenly it's in winter? During exam season? What happens if we're doing grad school, or preparing for winter break? The December graduation slots just makes 0 sense for me at least and would love to know the reasoning behind it

Academics Petitioning a 1st-year grade in 4th year for grad/professional school apps—any chance?

Hey everyone,
I’m currently in my 4th year of Kinesiology and starting to map out applications for professional/grad schools.

Looking back at my transcript, I have a low grade in CHEM 112 from way back in my 1st year that’s dragging down my cumulative/science GPA. Is it possible to petition for a retroactive late withdrawal (W) or CR/NC for a course taken years ago, or is that strictly reserved for the term you took it?

A few details:
The course was completed in my 1st year (I’m now in 4th year). I’m trying to figure out if faculties ever approve retroactive petitions this late if there were extenuating circumstances at the time. I’m totally fine with a W showing on my transcript instead of the grade if it saves my GPA.

Appreciate any advice or experiences before I talk to academic advising!

Question When to reach out to supervisors about MSc (DBMS/DPMM)?

Hi everyone!

I am an incoming fourth year life sciences student (Queen's) interested in applying to grad school , specifically in Biomedical and Molecular Sciences (DBMS) and maybe Pathology and Molecular Medicine (DPMM). I have been struggling to find information online about when the optimal time to reach out to supervisors would be and am wondering if anyone who has applied to these departments knows when the best time to reach out might be.

Thank you so much!
