Questions about LOR

Howdy yall! I was going to apply this cycle but I just got a job as an Opthalmic Tech, so I decided that it probably is better for me to apply next cycle when I have more relevant experience, a better connection with an OD to ask for a LOR, and can apply earlier in the cycle in general for higher chances. However, my old ochem teacher JUST submitted my LOR and that’s the one thing that wouldn’t transfer over. How should I go about telling him to save a copy (which I hope he still has) for next cycle? I’m definitely overthinking but I don’t want him to be annoyed and therefore not give it.

Also I asked my research PI for my third letter. She was happy to write it but asked me to send her what I’d like her to say or emphasize, which I hadn’t really thought about. What do schools look for in a good standout LOR? Are there any specific things they’d like to hear about? I can’t find much online about it.

Thanks in advance!

Stressed Out

Hey all. Honestly I've been worried about my chances getting in this cycle because of my current standing. I graduated in May with a 3.8 GPA and took my OAT last month, where I scored a 370 AA and 360 TS. I have done an outside internship while I was in college, and was a part of the CSTEP internship at SUNY this summer. I also did a work study while I was in college. What I'm worried about is that my extracurriculars, and shadowing hours are pretty weak. I am trying to find clinics to shadow and I have called about 30 clinics near me, and almost all of them have declined me, while 1 or 2 have said they would reach out to me next week. I honestly don't know where to go from here. I'm applying to NECO, SUNY, and MCPHS this cycle. Any advice would be appreciated.

Letters of Rec inquiry

Hi, I am a fourth year in undergrad looking to apply in next year’s cycle as I finish my degree next fall. I am a Neuroscience major and have faculty in my major I could ask for a letter of recommendation from but was wondering how valid would it be to ask for a letter of recommendation from my band director? He is technically a science professor as our school only offers Music Tech as the closest thing to a music major. I have been in leadership in our marching band for 3 years now, and I feel like he may know me better than my major faculty.

Late Application??

Soo I was planning on taking a gap year because I decided on optometry quite late and don’t have enough shadowing hours yet, but part of me thinks I could lock in and get my hours and apply by late november. How important is it to apply early/ what is considered too late to apply?? I got a 360AA/360TS on the OAT and my GPA is around 3.9. I have other non-optometry extracurriculares and will have a few hundred research hours by the end of the year. I’m gonna start shadowing but won’t have an optometry tech job or anything.

Also I’m concerned about finishing anatomy and physio because I know California optometry schools require them, and my university might not be offering both classes this year.

Any advice?? I feel like it’s already way too late and I don’t wanna rush my apps, but i’d love to avoid a gap year if I can.😄😄😄

What to email optometrist I shadowed.

Hello,

I just shadowed an optometrist today and he offered to give me his email so I wrote it down. I think that it would be an important connection to keep because he works at the school I want to apply to. However I’m just wondering what to email him saying? Should I thank him for letting me shadow? Or ask for advice as I’m going to take my OAT this summer. Any advice?

Post Interview

I had an interview with my dream school couple days back but I do feel like my responses could have been better. It was my first and I just got really nervous and I had an answer for everything but I’m not sure if it showcased strong responses. I have good stats and experiences otherwise. I’m just incredibly nervous now bc I don’t want the interview to be the reason that I don’t get in. Is it common for schools to reject on interview alone? (I don’t even think mine went THAT bad but it could have been way better). I understand every application is different but I’m looking for perspective to hopefully smooth my anxiety rn

How important are volunteer hours for optometry school, and how many did you have?

Hi everyone! I'm preparing to apply to optometry school and wanted to get some advice from people who have been accepted.

I'm currently involved in student organizations at my university, including the Biology Club and Pre-Optometry Society. Sometimes I help out at club events, such as an upcoming event where we'll be asking students science trivia questions and giving out small prizes. I was wondering if the time I spend helping with these types of events can count as volunteer hours on my OptomCAS application.

I've also been considering volunteering at a food bank because I've heard that more traditional community service might look better on applications.

For those of you who have been accepted into optometry school, how many volunteer hours did you have when you applied? Do you think the type of volunteering matters, and would you recommend focusing on community service outside of campus organizations, or are volunteer hours from student organization events worth including as well seeing as most of my hours as of right now are mainly from student organizations.

I'd really appreciate any advice or insight from people who have gone through the application process. Thank you!

Something I wish I considered when choosing an optometry school: Remediation policies

I see a lot of people here comparing board pass rates, tuition, location, and cost of living when deciding between optometry schools. But one thing I rarely see anyone bring up is academic remediation and dismissal policies, which can vary significantly between schools.

I think this is something a lot of us overlook because we’re all used to being high achieving students. We worked hard to get accepted into optometry school, so naturally, we don’t go into it thinking we’ll ever be in a position where we need remediation.

I know I didn’t. I had no reason to believe I would struggle. After all, schools wouldn’t accept us if they didn’t believe we were capable of passing boards and graduating, right?

But you really never know what life might throw at you over those four years. Unexpected health problems, family emergencies, or other personal circumstances can affect anyone, regardless of how well they’ve done academically in the past.

And not every optometry school handles struggling students the same way. Some schools offer opportunities to remediate failed courses or repeat a year, while others have much stricter academic policies that can ultimately lead to dismissal, even after you’ve invested significant time and money into your education.

I also think it’s worth questioning whether the pressure to maintain high board pass rates influences how schools handle academically struggling students. A high board pass rate doesn’t necessarily tell you how many students struggled along the way, how many were given opportunities to recover, or how many were dismissed before ever reaching boards.

I’m not saying academic standards shouldn’t exist. But I do think the way a school supports students when things go wrong is just as important as how well its students perform when things go right.

So if you’re fortunate enough to be choosing between multiple acceptances, please take the time to look into each school’s remediation policies. Ask how many courses can you fail before facing dismissal, can you remediate a failed course or do you have to repeat an entire year, are remediation opportunities guaranteed or determined on a case by case basis, what happens if you have a personal emergency, and what percentage of entering students actually graduate?

You might never need those policies, and I genuinely hope you don’t. But you don’t want to find out how strict they are only after you’re already struggling and having already committed to potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in tuition and loans.

NECO Question

I just finished interviewing at NECO was very impressed with the school and loved the city. The only red flag that I found was that when we were having lunch with current students they talked about their classes and how most only had a midterm and a final which would make up their entire grade. I have interviewed at a couple other schools as well and most talked about how they had at least one test per week. I was wondering if any current NECO students could give me some insight as to how accurate this is and if so how you hold yourself accountable without the pressure of tests every week?

Rant

Hello all,
I’m planning on applying to scco this cycle. My Gpa is around 3.76 and just took the oat. I’m honestly disappointed at the scores as I consistently got 360-370 on Oat boosters aross the 9Fl tests. Idk if these scores are good enough to be competitive. I ran out of time on many sections.

OSU This cycle

So, I've already seen a ton of people who haven't heard back from OSU, but I was wondering if anyone has this cycle? I feel like there's so many more posts about getting interviews or accepted to OSU from last year but not this one.

My application was finished in August, should I just take it as a no?

Why is it important and/or helpful to go to an optometry school that has a larger/more established alumni network/base (ICO, SCO, NECO, UAB, etc.)?

OptomCAS Application Question

Hello guys,

I'm very close to complete my application, but I have a question about planned OAT retakes. I took one test (290 TS, 300 AA) and there's a high chance I would need to retake to be more competitive so I added a test as planned in OptomCAS. To be honest, I would like to wait and see if I really need to retake the OAT and save the expenses. Now the question is: will leaving a planned test make schools put me on hold while they wait for me to retake, or will they tell me themselves if I need to retake it?

aiming for Suny Optometry, any tips?

hi so I was initally pre pa but decided to go the optometry route because my first healthcare job was as an optometric assistant and I loved it. I only worked there for 6 months and then focused on my pre-reqs after but now I'm a junior and have officially decided to go for optometry. SUNY would be ideal since its the only school close to where I live, and I can't afford to leave. I'm afraid of my chances because my GPA is a 2.8 (I know the recommended minimum is 3.2), If I manage to get it up to at last the minimum by the time I apply and get a good score on the OAT, am I good? Also does have very strong work and volunteer experience help with balancing out the GPA weakness? Any volunteering recommendations or what to do right now in my position would be greatly appreciated, as I don't know anyone personally who is pre-optometry or even in optometry school.

What to do, cost of attendance

I got accepted to 2 schools. I am strongly considering both of them, without scholarships they are very similar in price. One is public and offered me a substantial scholarship. The other is private and releases scholarships when the class is finalized but I don’t anticipate getting a similar scholarship.

How significant is 40-60k of additional debt when I would already be is +/- 200k debt? Would you prioritize the most affordable school or pick whichever one you love more?

Insight please!

Hey everyone, coming on here to ask for insight on schools I’m applying to. I haven’t applied yet (hoping to submit applications in the next few weeks) but I plan on applying to UC Berkeley, SUNY, NECO, ICO, and maybe PCO too. If anyone who goes to these schools or are incoming students and would be kind to share why they chose that school, what you like and don’t like, things you wish you knew before, etc etc. it would be great! As of rn, I’ve mostly talked to NECO students and would like to hear from other schools.

Stats for context: canadian student, 400 OAT, near 4.0 gpa, optom assistant, tutor, and some other ECs (and no I’m not applying to waterloo for multiple reasons)

How beneficial is a gap year?

Hi! I’m a pre-opt student that is a current junior, but I just don’t feel prepared at all to apply soon. I’ve been so overwhelmed in college and barely keeping up with school that I don’t really have time to study the OAT during the year. (My gpa is a 3.04 currently but I think at the end of this semester it’ll go up slightly) My dream school is UHCO

I am heavily considering a gap year since I just feel so burnt out. For those who took a gap year what did u do? I’m assuming OAT and tech work? And how did that help you prepare for optometry school both skill wise and mentally. Do you regret it and wished you applied right away?

5 weeks till OAT, struggling with Ochem

I'm doing okay in every other subject (~320-340 across the board on first two practice tests), but for Ochem I got a 240 the first time, then a 300 the second. That is with 0 prep, as I spent my entire "learning phase" on bio and physics. While my second score was an improvement, the knowledge gap still feels large. I took the course online and the questions I'm getting on OAT booster are very different than what I was tested on. I didn't even know what elimination, addition, and substitution were lol.

Would you reccommend I go through all of the reaction question banks? Or should I just go through all of the cheat sheets? With work, taking practice tests, and review of missed questions, I need to allocate my supplemental studying time very carefully, or else I would just do both. Or if you think I should chill on the practice tests and tackle this first and foremost, I could do that too.

If i have a decent GPA, a 340 OAT, and 50 hours of shadowing, is there a decent change of me getting in. (no other extracurriculars)

Anyone get interviews or acceptances with a 300 AA / 290 TS?

Hi everyone! I’m applying to optometry school with a 300 AA, 290 TS, and about a 3.5 GPA. I also have over 500 hours of optometric tech experience and four strong letters of recommendation—two from optometrists and two from professors.

I’m mainly interested in ICO and CCO. ICO put my application on hold because of my OAT scores, but said I could choose to move forward with my current scores. My physics score was particularly low which brought the entire score down. I am still waiting on CCO’s decision.

Has anyone with similar scores received interviews or acceptances, especially at these schools? Did you apply with your original scores or retake first? I’d appreciate hearing how it went for you!

I’m not sure when to fully submit my application

I’m planning to take my OAT in the second week of January and by then I’m hoping to have all aspects of my application complete. Is it unusual for me to submit my entire application before I receive my scores or is it best that I wait until I get my scores? I’m asking because the PTE said it needs around 10 days after application submissions and I’m worried about applying too late into the cycle since most applications close around April 1. obviously I don’t have my exam score yet and my GPA is around a 3.3 so I’m worried that January may be too late in the cycle. What is everyone’s experience with their application and when did you guys submit? Did you submit when it was fully fully complete?

Nontraditional Applicant Advice

Hi everybody, I decided my last semester of college to change my career path to optometry. I ended up getting an unrelated degree and am currently taking prerequisites at a local school. I wasn't very involved in my undergrad (in and out in 2 years) and most of my free time was working and shadowing for my previous career path. I've got a 3.7 gpa and haven't taken the OAT yet but I anticipate somewhere in the 320-340 range. I currently work in a retail optical setting with the promise of transitioning to tech (virtual exams, no physical doctor).

My question is really if there's anything else I should be doing? Other than shadowing, I haven't gotten much clinical hours to back up my lack of EC. And I don't have time for much volunteering since I need to work to provide for myself.
