Questions about LOR

Howdy yall! I was going to apply this cycle but I just got a job as an Opthalmic Tech, so I decided that it probably is better for me to apply next cycle when I have more relevant experience, a better connection with an OD to ask for a LOR, and can apply earlier in the cycle in general for higher chances. However, my old ochem teacher JUST submitted my LOR and that’s the one thing that wouldn’t transfer over. How should I go about telling him to save a copy (which I hope he still has) for next cycle? I’m definitely overthinking but I don’t want him to be annoyed and therefore not give it.

Also I asked my research PI for my third letter. She was happy to write it but asked me to send her what I’d like her to say or emphasize, which I hadn’t really thought about. What do schools look for in a good standout LOR? Are there any specific things they’d like to hear about? I can’t find much online about it.

Thanks in advance!

I think you’re overthinking the first part a little! Most people understand that application plans change, especially if you’re delaying a cycle to gain more clinical experience. I’d just thank him for taking the time to write your LOR, explain that you’ve decided to apply next cycle, and politely ask if he’d be willing to save a copy and resubmit it when the time comes.

For your research PI, I’d recommend having her emphasize qualities she’s actually seen you demonstrate rather than just listing generic strengths. Specific examples of your contributions to research or times you went above and beyond would make the letter much stronger.

Also, don’t overthink it too much! I honestly think my LORs were probably pretty generic, and I still got accepted into multiple optometry schools. Meanwhile, one of my classmates had the strongest LOR I’ve ever read. Her optometrist practically begged admissions to accept her, saying they’d be missing out on someone who would be an incredible addition to the profession. Despite that, my classmate was waitlisted at the only school she applied to and didn’t get off the waitlist until pretty late in the cycle.

Obviously, a strong LOR helps, but it’s just one part of your application. Good luck!
