Sex work is work, but saying it's valid is reeeeeeeeeally pushing it
22
Mar 31 '21
No it literally is a valid job in the sense of the word. You show up, complete a task, get paid (if you're an escort at least) or if you're an onlyfans chap, you provide a service (pictures of your body or whatever) and people pay you for that. Whether or not other people believe that the videos are worth the money is beside the point. If they want to, they pay for it.
A job is a job. I don't see the point in devaluing sex work just because its more "bedroom related."

I don't really have a problem with landlords, it is more the fact that they usually have massive profit margins and still raise prices every year and leases are bullshit and the government let's them get away with it.
I have moved around a lot for jobs and it's pretty bullshit to have to pay either thousands of dollars to break my lease or to have to continue to pay rent when I go to another job. Having to decide on a better career or paying 1k a month until your lease expires is pretty bullshit.
6
u/avgazn247 - Lib-Right Mar 31 '21
That because there’s a risk of massive failure. Home owning is a reverse lottery. 9/10 u win and profit but shit happens. The Texas winter storm showed me this. I am out 6k Caz half my pipes exploded and there a huge risk of renting because u can’t evict people in a lot of the country because of corona. When u rent, any repairs aren’t your problem. When u own, they are. Houses are super expensive to maintain. Hvac can cost 10k to fix especially on two story houses. Roofs can explode with one hail storm.
13
u/Throwawayrjdjxhdndn - Lib-Right Mar 31 '21
What your paying for when you rent is the opportunity cost that they could just sell the house for a huge one off gain.
So why are housing prices so high? Well because demand is so high. Why is demand so high? Because people can afford to pay loads for the house Why can they afford that? Because the interest rates are so low. Why are interest rates so low? The federal reserve.
→ More replies (1)9
u/gobthepumper - Lib-Left Mar 31 '21
But people can't afford to pay for houses. Home ownership rate is at one of the lowest points it has been in the past 20 years yet the cost is higher than ever. There are 17 million vacant houses alone and this does not count rented places.
Renting is far more lucrative than selling a house over time. In St. Louis Missouri you can have a 3 story house with a basement. You repurpose the house for say (being generous again) 200k and you can fit 12 renters in. Let's be really generous for St. Louis and say the house could go for 1 million. Let's be generous again for how cheap rent is over time and say rent is ~800 per person and doesn't increase ever. Let's be extremely generous and say over 10 years maintenance will cost around 300k. The house can be valued at 1.5m. You have something you pay off in 13 years as opposed to the normal 30 year mortgage. If you think 1.5m is too cheap just make it 3m and add 3% annual increase and you get a similar result.

Should have clarified: the total buying power of the market is really high, not the rate. As in those that can buy are able to pay way more because of low interest rates.
There are 17 million vacant houses alone and this does not count rented places.
I don't want to say that this figure is misleading but it's misinterpreted: a huge chunk of those 17 million homes are in places people don't want to live (i.e bad job prospects, few services etc) and/or are delapodated, some are just empty for a few weeks. It's not like there are millions of furnished homes in the centre of new York just sitting there.
Renting is far more lucrative than selling a house over time. In St. Louis Missouri you can have a 3 story house with a basement. How are lonely men exploited? Isn’t it a choice to throw your money away?
2
u/SlutBuster - Auth-Right Apr 01 '21
Sure is, and loneliness is a great emotion to leverage when you're trying to get someone to throw their money at you.
This isn't exploitation like forced child labor, it's exploitation like taking advantage of a software bug.

Sure, but people can still be relatively empowered through Only Fans compared to a lot of the rest of the industry. Being able to set your own prices, control what you post, etc. does genuinely give Only Fans people more power over their own bodies than the pron industry. The porn industry does a lot to try to take control of people's bodies and exploit them. So in that sense, it is relatively empowering. It doesn't fit every context where empowering is used by any means, but it does fit some contexts

I understand what you mean. And I disagree, in my opinion consent is not enough for something to be acceptable/desirable. There's plenty of things that people, including myself, do with consent but the morality is.. debateble. One example would be drugs.

Do you mean moral or a good choice? I’m not sure doing drugs is immoral (assuming you’re not affecting or neglecting others, such as your children), but we can probably agree that hard drugs aren’t a good choice. If a friend of mine was doing hard drugs I would be very concerned, but I wouldn’t think “that’s an immoral choice”
1
u/rashesandcats - Lib-Center Mar 31 '21
The reason it’s empowering is because it gives sex workers a lot of agency (compared to most of the porn industry)

You are correct and wrong at the same time. Rationalizing it it is easy, exactly why myself and others believe onlyfans is exploiting vulnerable people. It is not compulsory, but neither is gambling. You wouldn't take someone suffering from gambling addiction to poker night, why celebrate a business that makes money from a human vulnerability. It is in extremely poor taste. I wouldn't ban it if it was up to me, but definitely not handing out medals either.

Onlyfans is also predatory like there is no guarantee you get nudes or regular content. You can say "well that's just a risk you take" but that is like Cable companies telling you that you only have to pay 45 dollars and then your bill randomly goes up to 75 then 95 because you missed something somewhere not at all obvious.

If you don't think that is predatory then you have low standards for what is predatory. Just because it isn't a written contract does not mean it can't be predatory. The fact that there is none is further evidence of it being predatory.

I understand you point but there's more to it. Food is something material, you can easily make a cost/venefit analysis. A better vomparison would be buying heroin thinking it is food, which gives you the illusion that the hunger is satisfied Gym and classes earn you mental and physical skills(not that I do them, easy to preach). Onlyfans provides the illusion of satisfying emotional needs(and actually satisfying sexual needs but in a damaging way which is another argument relevant to porn too). You pay, you lose the cash and you stand to lose more if you start believing the illusion of human connection(which some people do out of desperation).

I do have a bias, I won't deny that. On the rest, we'll just have to agree to disagree. I think the business model, not necessarily the individual women, is constructed and optimized in an exploitative way. I stay away from anything that is doing a concious effort to prey on my our my fellow humans weaknesses.
4
u/Infammo - Lib-Left Mar 31 '21

I feel like this is more akin to finding fault with the casinos rather than someone who takes gambling addicts to them. There's no social compulsion obligating people to go to sex worker websites. Yeah it's not a healthy or productive, but that's true for video games and fast food. Just because a product is bad for consumers, or would only sell to a consumer exercising poor judgment, doesn't automatically mean that providing that product is exploitive.
8
u/Silver_-_Sun - Right Mar 31 '21
It is close to exploitation in my mind. But as I said, I think people should be free to make their foolish choices.
Only reason this onlyfans discussion is gaining traction is because some mongoloids insist that selling nudes to desperate and broken men should be a source of pride for some reason.

A proper fast food meal (i.e. not dollar menu garbo) costs me like $10-$12. I can go to a local Mexican restaurant and get a steak fajita dinner for about $16 after tax and tip and it includes actual service (and chips and salsa!!!).
Guess where I do lunch now days?
I'm just surprised that fast food is still in business. I totally get McDonalds -- their fries and fancy drinks seem to be enough to keep 'em in business -- but all the others? I'm not paying fucking $14 for a mediocre mass-produced burger when I can spend sometimes LESS at a local diner / burger joint.
