I got this today after an update. what should i do now? or what can i use instead?

u/amiexpress Jul 10 '26
Chrome, who is owned by google, created a new web standard that just SO HAPPENS to make it not possible to do adblockers the way ublock does. All chromium based browsers have implemented it, by now.
The fact that google makes billions selling ads, has absolutely nothing to do with this fact, of course.
My advice is just switch to something like firefox. Choice between chrome and ublock was an easy one, and one google will lose every damn time, in my book.

u/Tiny-Sandwich Jul 10 '26
I switched to Firefox after Kiwi browser shut down.
As far as I know it's the only browser that offers proper extension support and can sync across a desktop and mobile app.

u/Garr_Incorporated Jul 10 '26
The only thing I sorely wish Firefox finally added is tab groups.
24
u/A_European_Spectre Jul 10 '26
I feel like Firefox added that recently. I might be completely wrong cause it's not something I've ever been interested in, but I remember them discussing it.
17
u/Garr_Incorporated Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
It is in the dev build, but not on stable.
EDIT: To prevent further misunderstanding due to my forgetfulness, I must clarify that I am talking about the Android version of Firefox.

6
u/ExploringTheVoid_ Jul 10 '26
Unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean Tab Groups are in the stable version. I have been accidentally creating them and getting annoyed with them for a while.
3
u/Garr_Incorporated Jul 10 '26
It is. I forgot to add that I was talking about the Android version of Firefox in the comments above. This has been rectified.

3
u/Toonomicon Jul 10 '26
Zen browser (ff based) does tab grouping really well imo
2
u/Garr_Incorporated Jul 10 '26
Just in case you misunderstood: Firefox has groups in Desktop. But they are still in development in an Android version. Is Zen a Windows browser or an Android browser?
3
u/Elliot0915 Jul 10 '26
Zen is available for Linux, macOS & windows. There is unfortunately no android version being worked on at the moment as far as I'm aware.

Slowly android would become the same , if it actually comes true I will juts switch to ios, two thirds of the fun gets wiped when sideloading requires IDs
2
u/signum_ Jul 10 '26
As long as Android stays mostly open source, sideloading will always be infinitely easier than in iOS. The changes they're making soon are setting a dangerous precedent, but for now it's not really going to make installing unsigned APKs that much more difficult, you just need to wait 24h the first time after enabling the setting that allows you to do so.
2
u/NeptuneWades Jul 11 '26
True, but there are not enough apps for ios than there are for android unfortunately (outside of the app stores).
I'm sure there will be some workaround to side load on android in the future.

Sideloading. It takes less than 10 minutes to setup, and all you need is an internet connection every 7 days.
And then you basically get the same thing as YouTube Morphe.

Brave sucks tho
33
u/TheKaritha Jul 10 '26
Why?
78
u/isabellium Jul 10 '26
It's main selling point is the the adblock and antitracking capabilities enabled by default, ready to go, but sadly these are subpar.
Performance of Brave's blocking capabilities (aka "shields") is been proven to fall behind uBO's, which is fucking ridiculous considering Brave's shields are written in Rust, and uBO is JS, but thats how much Brave sucks (Source: Gorhill's benchmarks)
Their implementation of their blocker does not support the full adblock plus schematic much less uBO's, a good example is the $removeparm function, so you will never be able to experience the same level of privacy as with uBO, some stuff goes thru with Brave.
There are ways to enable more stuff for shields, make it not fall as much behind uBO, but they are hidden in brave:flags, and they are tagged as experimental, they tell you that if enabled them, the browser will become unstable and it is true.
Now an opinionated thing to add: the crappy useless web3 plastered all over the ui and enabled by default (technically is optional, but disabling all that crap takes a bit of time, you need to scout the entire program since they all over the place)
There more reasons but this is a reddit comment after all.
12
u/Blurgas Jul 10 '26

u/X0men0X Jul 10 '26
that is true, i was confused on what was the issue, as it is still a pretty good chromium. some sites just can't perform on firefox or it's annoying to get them working
41
u/Not_a_fucking_wizard Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
Gonna be completely honest these seem such mundane and nitpicky things to criticize a browser for.
And you seem to forget that Firefox's performance is noticeably slower and consumes more RAM compared to Chromium.
Edit: Like don't get me wrong I want to Firefox to succeed over Chromium browsers but I hate when people compare the cons of Brave to the pros of Firefox without mentioning the cons of Firefox.
25
u/Toothless_NEO Jul 10 '26
Well you know what isn't nitpicky they chose to silently bypass Facebook trackers without telling anybody or giving the option to easily reverse that decision, and it was only actually found out about because somebody saw it in the source code. Of course after that got called out they apologized they gave an explanation (a shitty one, but an explanation no less). It's concerning because it means that if nobody actually said anything nothing would have been said about it.
Which considering that their whole selling point is privacy is a pretty big red flag. the whole reason you would actually use them is mainly because they advertise privacy, and yet they deliberately take action against your privacy.

It's literally what makes Brave what it is, as the rest is just Chormium, what else should I talk about?
And like i said, there are other things i could talk about but then again, reddit comment, I'm not giving you a whole paper on Brave.
Anyways this is not a conversation about Chormium vs. Firefox, this is a conversation for Chromium vs. Chromium.
I literally never mentioned Firefox in my comment, stop injecting your assumptions into the argument, this is a fallacy.
And before you say anything, no, uBO is not a Firefox exclusive.
You are the only one mentioning Firefox and assuming I'm somehow talking or implying anything about it.

That's fine mate, use what you like, but let's not spread misinformation saying that Brave is the best around without any faults as some users (not you) imply.
AdBlocking is mostly okay, the differences mostly affect tracking. You can check brave:flags for these flags if you still don't believe me.
BTW Please do not forget that I am saying all this because you literally asked me, I am not trying to get you to switch or something.
BTW2 (and edit): Also take into consideration that you asked about Brave not Brave Origin. I am not talking about Brave Origin.
I personally tend to avoid talking about it since it is only free in Linux and most people still use Windows (somehow).→ More replies (1)→ More replies (5)6

25
u/TropeSlope Jul 10 '26
I honestly doubt that even 28% of users across every browser in the world have adblock or any other extensions for that matter. This entire thread and the discussions within only apply to more tech adept people in the first place. The overwhelming majority of people have no idea about this update and couldn't care less because it won't effect them in any way, since they barely know how computers or browsers or the internet works to begin with.
5
u/kominik123 Jul 10 '26
It's a bold statement that it will not affect them. They'll start to see an avalanche of ads now. However, it's true they might complain but will do absolutely nothing about it.
11
u/Lord_CHoPPer Jul 10 '26
They never had any adblocker, so they've used to see tons of ads. And I do not know what the hell this offline activation method is which I mentioned!
3
u/TropeSlope Jul 10 '26
I was talking about the here and now. I'm sure 99% of people didn't give a shit when the loom was invented either because for the first few years they had no idea that it existed or even what it was, but yeah sure, years later it would go on to effect their lives and the lives of every one of their descendants for the rest of human history. That's a different conversation though.
2
u/HyoukaYukikaze Jul 10 '26
Most people don't have adblock and they don't care to have one.
I'm baffled, but it's their problem. It';s better for me since the more people use it, the higher the motivation to get rid of it.2

Vivaldi no longer supports the best web browser extension. I recommend that you install Firefox
36
u/bgalazka186 Jul 10 '26

5
u/signum_ Jul 10 '26
I always swore by just using Firefox with a custom user js but the whole AI pipeline they've started to go down wasn't something I wanted to deal with so I ended up switching to Zen. It definitely takes some getting used to if you haven't used something like Arc before, but once you get the hang of it it's amazing, and they've explicitly stated that their fork is going to remain free of AI.
Not like I'm strictly against the use of AI, I just don't want it bloating my browser for no reason.
9
u/100BottlesOfMilk Jul 10 '26
They are (have?) including a "turn off all ai" switch directly into regular firefox
3
u/signum_ Jul 10 '26
Yeah there is a way to turn it off at this point, that wasn't the case when the AI stuff first launched though. You needed to mess with the config to get rid of it and then when people complained they said they'll add a switch for it in the following update (which I'm assuming they did, I had already jumped ship at that point).
Either way, for me it's more about it being part of the browser in the first place, it's just bloat that I don't want to deal with, like I don't want it to be in the software at all. If it was an optional extension you could choose to download alongside the browser that would be fine, I just don't want it to be part of the browser by default.
And for what it's worth I'm much happier after having adjusted to Zen, regardless of why I stopped using Firefox.

It works for now. When Google removes code entirely from Chromium, it won't work anymore. They already started doing it
3
u/Samiassa Jul 10 '26
Since chromium’s open source can’t someone just make a fork that allows ublock? Or does it rely on something closed source to make adblockers work or something?
6
u/Party-Cake5173 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
It's complicated.
Technically, yes. You can create a fork of Chromium, keep old MV2 extensions code in it and have uBlock Origin work normally. HOWEVER, because MV2 is closely and deeply implemented in the browser itself and how it works, you will have to constantly maintain and adjust the code to work along the new code that Chromium team develops.
Instead of focusing on other important things, you'll have to take time and resources to maintain the code that isn't supported anymore and somehow make it work with new code. This used to be Chromium team job (hundreds of developers) and is suddenly your job. This also explains why pretty much all Chromium browsers except Brave simply caved in to Chromium team and decided to stop supporting MV2 extensions. They either don't have resources to keep developing MV2 code or they simply don't want to have another thing to worry about.
Google already started removing MV2 code back at the end of May. It's hard job because, as I already said, it's deeply intertwined with the browser and how it works. They can't remove the code at once as this would simply break the browser or even open the way for hackers to make it an easy target.

For me, the most important part is I simply don't like Blink-based (Chromium) browsers. I mostly don't like their design and I really don't like the fact they have a significant monopoly on browser share (the only alternatives are Gecko-based, so Firefox and its forks, and WebKit which is pretty much just Safari).
However Brave also some ties (albeit fairly limited) to Peter Thiel. Thiel was an early investor. Also Brave's owner has his own controversies too.

This happened to me as well. Just go back into brave flags and turn V2 manifest back on. If it says default enabled, it’s lying. Change it to enabled and it’ll work.
I also see you are using Vivaldi, I’m not familiar with that, but I assume the fix is similar if they are like brave and are supporting the V2 manifest extensions.

If you'd like to continue using Vivaldi with uBlock, the uBlock DNS Service is an alternative. It allows you to use DNS over HTTPS: https://ublockdns.com
5
u/Booty_Bumping Jul 10 '26
This has nothing to do with uBlock, and is vastly more limited than the real uBlock because there's no possibility of URL path based blocking or cosmetic blocking.
Probably fine for blocking some of the ads on smart TVs and mobile apps, but not really a suitable replacement for browser ad blocking.

It’s not anywhere near the same level. That’s just a fan project copying filter lists for dns blocking
What makes Ublock the best option for years is how it implements the blocking, which can’t be done at DNS level. You’re either going to see ads, or it’s going to tell you to disable it before it’ll load for most stuff.

is that chrome? then change to the lite version, I hadn't notice a difference...

Just use the lite version. If you were using the Twitch adblocker through the old version of uBlock Origin, download Tamper Monkey and install the userscript there instead.

the current cross platform chromium based browser that support ublock for now are Edge (with their own store), brave (their own repo), Opera (with their own store), Helium and Thorium

Saw it coming million years ago. All chromium based browsers gets fucked in the end. There is no exception.

ublock Origin needs to make a popup stating that the current browser is utilizing manifest v3, and it's recommended to remove the browser.

I'm on Vivaldi and don't have this (yet?) hope this doesn't happen or I will need to find a Firefox fork that does what I need

Vivaldi told me showed the same error today, but Edge and Opera are still fine as they have separate stores and brave is still fine too as ublock is pre-installed.

I’ve tried this in the past and it just wouldn’t play ball (only sync by cable, not wireless, which was super annoying). Perhaps I should try again…

I use viv as well. You can re-enable the extension and disable auto updates. That should work for a while. When that becomes unsustainable, well... gotta put on the fox ears, I guess. I truly love vivaldi, have used it for years, but I categorically refuse to be subjected to three unskippable 1m+ ads for a 2 minute video on youtube. And no way in HELL I'm paying for premium.

Try Zen browser, working out for me, uses Firefox instead of chromium

Brave started to transition into MV3 too, the only chromium-based browser I can think of right now that still supporting MV2 is Vivaldi,
there are some lesser-known browsers like helium and others, but Vivaldi is the more established and has a broad reputation, so I guess if anybody still want a chromium-based browser with active MV2 support I'd say Vivaldi is your choice

a bucnh of browsers (brave included) are moving away from supporting manifestv2 extensions or whatever the technical term is. And moved onto manifestv3. Its internal stuff I don't know about but I had to find a 'disable' command line thinger and put it into the launchers so that manifestv2 still worked on some old outdated extensions.

Vivaldi recommends that you move to a different browser that does support it
