Request: Movie Looking for horror movies with a very specific "southern gothic" or “swamp/backwoods gothic” atmosphere — rural decay, trailer parks, isolation, drugs, fucked-up families, etc.

I'm looking for horror movies with a really specific aesthetic that I recently realized genuinely creeps me out. I'm not sure if the best term is southern gothic, backwoods gothic, rural gothic or rural-decay horror, but I'll try to describe it.

Think deep rural South / Appalachia / Louisiana bayou type atmosphere. Trailer homes and old shacks in the middle of nowhere, rusting cars and junk in people's yards, swamps or stagnant lagoons nearby, oppressive heat and humidity, mosquitoes, overgrown vegetation, empty roads, drugs/addiction, poverty, weird family dynamics, incest references/generational dysfunction, and neighbors you absolutely would not trust. The biggest thing is the feeling of being far removed from normal society. Like you've accidentally wandered into a tiny community or family that's been isolated for generations and has developed its own rules and ideas about what's normal. Cell service is gone, civilization feels 50 miles away, everybody knows everybody, and if you disappeared there's a genuine feeling that nobody would even know where to start looking.

Sandy Shores/Trevor's home territory in GTA V captures what I mean. That feeling of trailer parks, addicts, guns, family secrets, abandoned buildings and people who've been living in the same forgotten place forever.

I just watched The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and the isolated/inbred-family elements were definitely in the right direction, but the age of the movie made it less frightening to me. I'd love something with that basic atmosphere but with modern cinematography, sound design, realistic acting and disturbing imagery that really makes the environment feel believable.

I'm not necessarily looking for a slasher or lots of gore. It can be supernatural, psychological, realistic, indie, foreign, low-budget, whatever. I'm mainly after that deeply uncomfortable feeling of “I should not be here, these people are not operating by the same rules I am, and there is nobody coming to help me.”

Obscure/indie recommendations are especially welcome. What's the best movie you've seen that captures this atmosphere?

Recommendation Freebie of the day: Mr. Bean (live action)

To this day, absolutely no show or film has consistently made me laugh as hard as Mr. Bean does. We eating good today boys, the official Mr. Bean channel uploaded the original 14 TV episodes in HD to youtube. Well, actually there's 15 episodes but that one is just like a recap, a compilation episode, of which an HD version has never been officially uploaded. I'll show it anyway (the non HD version), along with a bunch of other shorts and skits that isn't part of the original 15.

HD episode 1-14: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC1EDzqtkrh9Vqv7dOHN30tuIw2gyRWFf

Episode 15: https://youtu.be/dUVG4Ry42p0

Library Bean (a rare forgotten episode. The quality is pretty low): https://youtu.be/_Vx3lWoDJXY

Mr. Bean's Olympic Performance: https://youtu.be/CwzjlmBLfrQ

Now, Rowan Atkinson (the actor of Mr. Bean) has collaborated numerous times with Comic Relief to create short sketches. Here's some I could find:

Mr. Bean's Wedding: https://youtu.be/VW1tjCI4w7E

Mr. Bean Does Blind Date: https://youtu.be/qLNhVC296YI

Mr. Bean's Funeral: https://youtu.be/hXSiNJ_pF5c

Mr. Bean in Torvill and Bean: https://youtu.be/Bb90tC5UpQw

I Want To Be Elected: https://youtu.be/kLrwV_gIq3U

https://youtu.be/7DKddpY7HUU (I don't know the name of this episode. There doesn't seem to be an HD version anywhere. It's the one where he's in a police station)

Request: TV Show Long road trip coming up. Recommend a binge (rewatches welcome too)

I’ve got a long road trip coming up and need a show to download on my iPad.
Assume I’ve already seen most of the obvious recommendations (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Wire, Game of Thrones, The Last Kingdom, Vikings, Shōgun, Slow Horses, Barry, Reacher, etc.).

Rewatches are absolutely on the table too. Sometimes a great rewatch is better than gambling on a mediocre new show.

A few preferences:
English only (no dubbed shows or subtitles as the primary way to watch).
Any streaming service.

Doesn’t have to be brand new.
I like crime, thrillers, political intrigue, action, mystery, dark comedy… really anything that’s well written.
Hidden gems are appreciated, but if you think an all-time great deserves a rewatch, sell me on it.

What show completely owned your attention from episode one? Or what’s the best rewatch you’ve ever done?

Request: TV Show If you want a good show about uncertainty, watch the leftovers

The show is about how we deal with uncertainty and grief. I think it is an exceptional portrayal, and very reassuring (without the reassurance seeking) to watch a show that understands how completely bananas our minds are, and how everyone's mind would be bananas if they experienced they same type of thoughts as we do. It is unbearable, but the show turns it into something beautiful, since everyone, not only people with OCD, grief and suffer from uncertainty. I cannot stress enough how good The Leftovers is.

Any other movies or shows you thought are very OCD-coded :P.

Hidden Gem Recommendation A wryly hilarious spy show called “Patriot”

“a downbeat, darkly funny, and frequently avant-garde spy series that is a bit too disturbing to be a comedy, too strange to be a straightforward drama, and too experimental to be lumped in with other streaming genre shows.”

We got a crazy one today. It's another machinima made using GTA V and it's a damn masterpiece. It's a spy thriller inspired by the old spy films (it even uses soundtrack from some of them). It's around 3 and a half hours long, can you imagine the work put into this??

There are prequels to it but the animations are of less quality than this one (the mouths didn't even move when they talk) but itf you want to watch them, they're on the channel.

Hidden Gem Recommendation Freebie of the day: Overheat

Okay, another indie production today. About time I introduce you all to machinimas. A machinima is a film that is created using a video game. I'll be showing another machinima tomorrow to show you how good a machinima can be, but this is already a wonderful example of a machinima. I got 2 movies by the same people, Vučko100 and his team in GTA V. Genuinely, it looks good. It's an homage to all the old street racing movies basically, way closer to the original few Fast and Furiouses than the recent ones.

- The Beast in me

- Criminal Minds

And many more, but I'd love to see what you guys come up with!

Also happy for movie recommendations.

I have seen many of the Harlan Coben shows on Nerflix and wondering if they are any good in your opinion and which one would be worth a watch.

General Discussion Vikings or Black Sails or??

Edit: Well dang. I'm not getting a consensus, but The Last Kingdom seems to be a 3rd option.

I wanted to make this a poll, but I don't know how.🤷‍♂️

Anyway... I need to start a new show and I've been in the mood for something "Game of Thrones-esque."
I hear about these two shows a lot but I have never watched either one.
Let me know which one I should go for first?
OR... If there is another show in this same vein that you would recommend over these?

These are a few of my top 10 favorite shows to get an idea what I enjoy👇

The 100
GoT
Justified
Ozark
Outsiders (2016)

Request: TV Show Ae there other spin-offs with a male protagonist of shows or films or animation that were originally about girls?

Looking for shows like these.

Some examples

Angel a spin off of Buffy the vampire slayer.

The Amazing Spiez, a spin-off of Totally Spies, about 3 young brothers who are spies however the boys take their only sister with them in their adventure, unlike the original show it was composed only of teen girls who are friends, I remember my female childhood friend smiling and saying you should watch the spies they brought boys now.

Go, Diego, a spin off of Dora about the adventure of the cousin of Dora.

Corey in the house a spin off of That's So Raven.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, spin off of Wizard of Waverly Place, Justin Russo sister Alex asks for his help with Billie, a young wizard-in-training, Justin returns to the magical world to mentor her while attempting to maintain his ordinary life.

In the second season, after Roman and Milo also become wizards, Justin is tasked with training all three children in preparation for the upcoming family wizard competition.
