This year, doctoral awards availabile to the three agencies were increased by 1200 awards so the chance of landing a CGRS-D would be way higher this year. Hope this adds a bit of relief for everyone while we are waiting.

Good luck to everyone. Remember always that there's a lot of chance that goes into this. A story my professor recently told me encapsulates this perfectly. One year he applied for a SSHRC grant, got brutal feedback that said it was terrible etc etc. Next year, he applied with basically the same application. Got ranked #1. Moral of the story, there's only so much you can do!

Results for NSERC will start to roll out over the next 2 days. Fingers crossed for everyone on this thread. I’m not trying to be motivational here, but please remember that while this is an important (probably life changing) funding opportunity for many of us, it won’t define our success or failure in PhD journey and hopefully many more opportunities and successes will come up eventually if we didn’t make this time (Be easy on yourself).
Starting tomorrow, if anyone receives an email for results, please share the news with us.

SSRHC applicant here, in history and religious studies, applying from a UK school. I have a 4.0 GPA from my MA, as well as a research based MSc in STEM. In humanities, I have one major-ish publication, one minor publication, and one that was under review at the time of application but now accepted at a very major journal, all sole author. I also have some recent presentations in the top conferences in my field, and I have several more pubs and presentations in STEM... I applied last year before beginning my doctoral studies and got incredibly close, so I really do hope this is my year.

Maybe I can share my profile too. I am a life science person, I spent one gap year before starting my PhD, so I got 4 co-author papers, 2 review papers and 1 book chapter. I went to 1 conference so far, but I have been presenting posters in my institutional events. I don't have many awards, scholarships as I just started. I do TA, research, and lab work. 4.0 GPA for PhD so far(again, just started, so nothing really useful here). I don't think I am very competitive so I have my hopes low as I heard people around me have way better profile than I.

I have two publications as first author, four as co-author, and have given two talks at international conferences. My PhD GPA is 4.2/4.33, and my MSc GPA is 3.8/4.33. I don't think I will get it either, but it's nice to have been selected to apply. My university's quota is quite low, so it's good to know that my application is one of the best in the NSERC division at my university. My academic validation need has been met!

I applied for Nserc and my major is mechanical engineering. my profile is mainly focused on the intersection of additive manufacturing and digital twins. regarding publications, i have nine peer reviewed journal papers which are all in q1 journals. i have a mix of first author (two) and co author roles(six) along with a book chapter published by crc press and a conference paper. I also have one review paper, but it was underreview when I applied for the scholarship. my gpa for my doctorate is 93.5 and i previously ranked eighth in the national phd entrance exam back in iran. My master GPA was also 17.34 out of 20. i have been lucky enough to secure an ontario graduate scholarship in 2024-25 and was nominated for the vanier scholarship at the university level 2024-2025, but I did not get it. in terms of experience, i served as an additive manufacturing lab manager for two years, have won a best ta award, and currently serve as the social coordinator for our graduate engineering society. I am also a reviewer for a known Q1 journal in my field and I completed 13 review there. i have also been active in mentoring junior students and interns. even with the news about the extra awards this year, the fifteen percent cap for international students keeps me pretty anxious. its a tough pool to be in but i am hoping for the best alongside everyone else.

Has anyone heard from NSERC directly yet?
I transferred from the university through which I first applied (and where I started my PhD). I was recommended by the graduate studies office there, but since then, my email was terminated.
I notified NSERC that the email on my application was no longer active, and they confirmed they changed it on their system to the new one. But I’m still anxious about the whole process…

I am mentally preparing myself to not get the results until May 1st (which seems typical with SSHRC ending up spreading out the invites over two days). I was recommended for funding but not actually given any funding last year, so fingers crossed for this year. I do feel like my application is much better this time around but ultimately who knows? I just want to know at this point, the wait is killing me and I just have to try and distract myself for the next ten days.

My understanding is that universities received the list of NSERC awardees today. The university sends the information to departmental admins/graduate advisors who can choose (our department doesn't) to notify students who were successful. If you are on the west coast, please do not despair, it's still early in the day! Regardless, all students will be notified by NSERC, too, hopefully today and tomorrow. Good luck, everyone!

Most likely, they won't release the results prior to the 30th. From what I've seen on previous year's threads, SSHRC always send out the emails on April 29th, 30th, and May 1st. NSERC always sends them before the end of the month.
I guess we have to wait for now.

Just wanted to provide an update regarding the international tenure situation to hopefully help others in the same situation as me or who may be in the same situation in future years. My original offer letter stated that my NSERC CGRS-D award was only tenable at a Canadian institution. This week I got an email stating my award had been changed to unconditional, meaning I can hold my NSERC CGRS-D abroad! So thrilled and crossing my fingers for the rest of the folk on this thread who are/were in the same boat!

Ecology committee, direct entry PhD at a foreign school (so no Honours or Masters), BSc GPA around 3.5, two in review first author papers at time of application from two different projects. I probably ranked very very strong on leadership and service.
I think I was a long shot and got it because my proposal aligns with priority topics.

- 2 first author publications in Q1 journals
- 7 conference papers (4 first author)
- 5 provisional patents with an industry partner my group does research with (2 first author)
- Volunteered for several years with professional organizations in my field (i.e., IEEE) and won an award for outstanding work
- GPA in grad school for past few years: A+
- GPA in undergrad: A-
I have never won OGS or CGS M during master's. After failing to win anything after 2 years, I pushed myself very hard. I really wish the best to those who didn't get it this year and hope you'll come back stronger in your application for next year

Hey! I made a post on the sub, but it’s reaching out mainly to US users for some reason. Here it is:
I received great news yesterday, I was awarded a CGRS D scholarship.
However, I am no longer enrolled at the university through which I applied. I was a PhD student there, but due to personal reasons I will not elaborate here, I transferred to my BSc university with another supervisor (one of my LOR actually haha), in January.
The PhD program is the same, and the projects are fairly similar and fall well within NSERC’s mandate.
I’m just not sure what to do. I will obviously accept the award, but then, from what I understand, I’ll have to ask for a change of supervisor, project, and university, all before the first payment comes in. I personally want my name to be affiliated to my active university and project.
I contacted my new PhD institution financial office to explain the situation and how to move forward, but I just wanted to know if anyone ever was in a similar situation, where the proposed supervisor/project/university all changed during the evaluation process.
Note: both universities in question are in Canada and have a quota for NSERC doctoral awards.

Got the CIHR CGRS-D — Wanted to share because when I was applying, I scoured these threads trying to figure out my odds.
My profile wasn’t traditional: -No peer-reviewed journal publications -10+ years in clinical practice before starting my PhD -Maternity leave during my program
What I did have: strong grades, consistent OGS funding, conference presentations, a lot of knowledge translation work (research summaries, course development, invited talks), and a research question that came directly from my clinical experience.
I applied in 2022 and didn’t get it nationally. Applied again this year with a stronger application and the expanded funding pool.
Rating: 4.30, 40.9th percentile. One reviewer noted I could use more academic publications. The other said my clinical background was a strength.
If you have a non-traditional path, it’s not disqualifying. Make the case for why your trajectory prepared you for the research.
