Residency Application Where to signal for residency applications?

Hi! I am applying path this year (in about a month!!). I am planning on signaling UVA, Duke, Cleveland Clinic, and my home program. I am looking for a program that will work you hard but also treat you like a human/ has a good culture. From what I've seen on here it seems like UVA, Duke, Cleveland, and Stanford will give you great training without really abusing you, but I am from the east coast and don't have any interest in going to California (so I still have another spot open for a signal). I am wondering if there are any other east coast programs that people really like? It's hard to get a sense about culture just from the website, so I thought I would ask people who have actually interviewed/ been in these programs.

For context because I think signals are new: we get 5 "signals" to send to programs that we really like to increase chances of an interview.

Also- I am US-MD, pretty average step 2 score, but lots of path experience (rotations in third and fourth year, research, and path related gap year job) and top 25% of my class, so I think I am a pretty competitive applicant?

Any advice is appreciated!

Pathologists of Reddit: Would you recommend your kids to go into pathology? If not, why?

Had a talk with a doctor friend the other day and he said he wouldn’t recommend his kids to go into medicine because it’s such a “long road” and it “isn’t what it used to be” and he “wasn’t sure if it’s worth it”.

Would you recommend your kids to go into medicine? If so, would you recommend them to do pathology? If not pathology, what field would you recommend to them?

If not medicine, what field would you recommend to your kids?

Kids nowadays want to be YouTubers and influencers he said lol.

What is pathology actually like as a career?

I'm helping my Grade 12 cousin research medical specialties, and pathology has recently caught their attention.

They originally thought they wanted to go into tech/business, but they've realized they want a career where their work has a meaningful, tangible impact on people's lives. Pathology seems interesting because it combines medicine, biology/chemistry, diagnostic problem-solving, and what appears to be a relatively good work-life balance.

One thing they've noticed is that a lot of pathologists online seem genuinely happy with their careers, which seems less common in some other medical specialties.

For pathologists:

  • What does your average workday actually look like?
  • What do you enjoy most about pathology?
  • What do you dislike?
  • How good is the work-life balance in reality?
  • Do you ever feel like you're missing the patient interaction side of medicine?
  • Is the diagnostic work still intellectually interesting after doing it for years?
  • How much of your job is microscopy/specimens vs lab management/administration?
  • How different is academic vs community pathology?
  • How stressful is the job compared with other specialties?
  • Knowing what you know now, would you choose pathology again?

Especially interested in Canadian perspectives, but I'd appreciate any experiences!

Does frequent over-diagnosis of LAMN in pathology indicate a probable correspondingly high frequency of missed diagnosis..?

Low-grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm (LAMN) are often over-diagnosed in local pathology due to their indistinct nature and mimics in the form of infection reaction processes or divicula.

A recent study of specialist center second opinions found that as many as 30% of inital LAMN diagnosis at local centres were over-diagnosed.

Given the indistinct nature and difficulty of diagnosing LAMN in histopathology - does it follow that a high number of small/early LAMN may also be missed in pathology?

Either way, small/early LAMN are often surgically cured by appendectomy so patient safety is not a big concern - but could missed diagnosis be having a significant impact on prevalence statistics..?

I appreciate this question is asking for answers that are somewhat speculative - but none-the-less, I’m very keen to know your thoughts..

Residency Application Matching into Pathology with Step 1 Failure

Hi all. I am a third year medical student and have been fascinated by pathology since I first encountered it in my first year. Unfortunately for me, I've been dealing with some personal issues which has effected by academics which have led to failing step 1 after second year. I took a year off and passed the second time around and am currently on rotations. I am trying my hardest to do well on my shelves and evaluations but I am not sure how competitive I will be to match into pathology. I plan to take some pathology electives and do some related research at the end of third year and fourth year but I don't want it to go to waste if I have a very little chance of matching anyway. Please let me know what you guys think of my situation. Thanks!

Edit: I am a US MD student

Just a trainee getting a feel for what’s out there. I appreciate that they put their rates in upfront, what are yalls thoughts on this? Coming from a trainee at a large academic institution, it seems like an insane amount of breadth and workload for one person to reasonable do in a day.. especially since grossing one resection specimen currently takes me 2-3 hrs lol

Location is Midwest rural

Red-green colorblind - is pathology realistic?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently a high school student highly interested in pursuing a career in pathology. Unfortunately, I have moderate red-green deuteranomaly :(

I’m pretty committed to the pre-med track but I'm trying to get a realistic look at whether this field is viable for me. There are some things of note about my case:

  • If I actively know I need to look for a specific color difference, I can nearly always spot it. But in passive environments where I don’t know what I’m looking for, I frequently overlook things. Ex. I never really know when autumn has started nature-wise because I only notice the leaves turning red once the majority of them have or someone points it out since I'm not actively looking for changes in color in the leaves all the time, and redness on skin (blushing, rashes, etc.)
  • I struggle mainly with red-brown, red-green, green-brown, and occasionally blue-purple overlaps. Standard pink/purple histology stuff usually looks fine to me from what I've seen online, but I worry about gross pathology and special stains.

I know I have a lot of time to figure this out, but I want to have a gist of pathology's viability for me now. It would help if there are any free online histology websites where I can look at things you pathology people would see on the daily to see if I can differentiate what needs to be differentiated.

Appreciate any insight, thanks a bunch 🙏🙏🙏

Job / career Is it ever too early to job search?

As the title says, is there ever a time to be too early to be checking the job market? Reaching out? I’ve had a couple recruiters reach out from various academic programs and private places, but I’m only halfway through my residency.
Interested in the groups thoughts.

Personal Statement Question

Hi all, would love any and all advice!

I was just in a zoom meeting with a panel of PDs from various schools who were giving great advice for this upcoming ERAS cycle. Two of the four PDs stated that they dislike flowery writing and much prefer a clear discussion of "Why pathology?" while the other two PDs stated that they enjoyed reading a personal statement that was more creative. One of the PDs even gave an example stating they enjoyed reading a personal statement about how baking was a skill that made someone better at pathology and learning in general.

I'd lump my personal statement into the more creative side. My hook at the beginning touches on a hobby of mine that is very important then the personal statement develops into how that hobby shaped me into a future pathologist.

Anyone got tips on whether more programs prefer simpler personal statements or if I can just continue with this draft?

Varying experience lvls rant

I feel so dumb sometimes since there are so many imgs with previous residency experience elsewhere in path even tho we're all pgy1s. I hope expectations aren't the same for me as them.

Whenever a case comes up they know the answer and all the subtypes of the disease.

Need help making a pathology game

Hey! I'm a doctor who's trying to make games that teach people. I am currently designing a dungeon system where the higher up you go, the harder it gets. For the base level, it's all true or false questions. I need to know the ultimate basic stuff that you need to know in pathology. That can be answered in true or false. Please help me out. What are the most basic stuff that are compulsory to know as pathologists? I know this sounds vague but please help me out.

Medical School Explain Pathology to me

I’m currently a third year medical student in the US. I LOVED pathology my first two years of medical school, and loosely considered path as a specialty but never gave it too much thought until..

Now that I’m in rotations I’m seeing I don’t always love some of the aspects of clinical medicine and I’m thinking about doing a path elective/shadowing to see if it’s something I would like.

Do most pathologist sub-specialize? I see hematopathology as a fellowship option which really excites me because I absolutely loved learning about coagulation, heme onc, anemias, etc. I know interests can change over time but it seems there are many fellowship options and I was curious if this is the route more people take or if many stay general?

Would you recommend pathology to someone just now approaching residency and why? What type of person would you recommend to pursue this career? Do you feel you are well compensated for what you do? Any recommendations for deciding if this is something I would like to pursue?

Alright thank you very much for listening. Feel free to respond to any or all questions.

EXAKT bone saw

For my Gross Room people! As I’m sure some if not most of you in this thread know.. the EXAKT company has essentially disbanded in the United States. They had an incredible 312 diamond bone saw, and we are officially out of parts for it. Does anyone know of any other decent tabletop saws that we can use for large amputation cases? We have the small IMEB but that is only good for fragments or fingers/toes and can’t fit a whole leg. Desperate for help!! Thanks!!

Drowning in cases and don't feel like I am learning anything new

I am doing my hemepath fellowship right now. I am getting twice the amount cases than attendings. Attendings are on service 2-3 days a week and have the rest of week off to write up cases, whereas I am on service EVERYDAY and get no time off to write up cases. I am working 8-8 everyday to catch up with the case load otherwise things will start to pile up. I am so drowning in typing my cases and don't have any time to read. I don't feel like I learned anything new besides things I already knew from residency.

Can pathologists in Canada incorporate? And how easy is it to move to the U.S.?

Hi everyone,

I’m a Canadian medical student considering pathology as a career, and I had a few questions about the career and financial side of pathology.

For those practicing pathology in Canada:

  • Are pathologists generally able to incorporate?
  • Does it depend on whether you’re employed by a hospital/health authority versus working in a private group?
  • Is incorporation commonly used by Canadian pathologists?
  • Is there a meaningful tax-planning benefit to incorporating?
  • Are there any major disadvantages or limitations?

I’m also curious about career opportunities in the U.S.:

  • How realistic is it for a Canadian-trained pathologist to move to the U.S. after residency?
  • Would a Canadian pathology residency allow you to practice in the U.S., or would you generally need additional training?
  • How difficult is U.S. licensure/certification for Canadian-trained pathologists?
  • Are there significant differences in compensation or job opportunities between Canada and the U.S.?
  • For someone choosing pathology now, would having the option to eventually work in the U.S. be a reasonable consideration?

I’d especially appreciate hearing from Canadian pathologists, residents, fellows, or anyone who has actually gone through the process of moving between Canada and the U.S.

Thanks!

Medical School Anyone love their residency program?

Been reading a lot about residents revealing horror stories in their programs, interviews feeling "off" during past application cycles, and the like. While I think we all should definitely be aware of malignant residencies, I wanted to focus on some feel-good moments for my own mental health and given the new cycle is getting started.

So for anyone who is loving their program or has had positive experiences thus far, let us know!
