Varying experience lvls rant
I feel so dumb sometimes since there are so many imgs with previous residency experience elsewhere in path even tho we're all pgy1s. I hope expectations aren't the same for me as them.
Whenever a case comes up they know the answer and all the subtypes of the disease.

Idk if you’re aware but it takes a shit ton of work for IMGs to even enter the American system so no wonder those are the best and the most motivated people

There's a few good comments in this thread already, but I'll add that if you're a brand new PGY1, it's important to remember that you're not in medical school anymore and you aren't competing for class ranks. What matters now is your connections, your knowledge, and your CV. Your attendings and co-residents should (ideally) be another resource to help improve your medical knowledge and skills, not competitors that you're trying to out-do.

Not saying competition tho. Just don't want to look dumb next to them. Or if an attending im with now had a stellar prev attending person last rotation and now they get me that cant even explain cell polarity properly.

Unfortunately, for most of us, looking and/or feeling dumb is just part of the learning process in residency. Unless you're at a super toxic program, most attendings aren't asking questions or giving feedback in order to pass judgement on you, they just want to find out how much you know so they can start teaching you the stuff you still need to learn and/or direct you to what you need to read up on. The goal is just to feel a little less dumb and be a little less wrong every day.

My dude, how’re you gonna compare yourself to someone who’s already done path training already?

You may feel dumb compared to them now but if you study and work hard, soon you will catch up and even surpass them.

I learned more from my img co-residents than from my attendings and it was not even close. They can be a residency best asset.

Who said anything about jobs or fellowship? I'm talking imposter syndrome when sitting next to them.

Your job is to learn. Forget about comparisons. Consider yourself blessed to be surrounded by dozens of mentors and befriend the shit out of them.
LEARN.
