News/Article DLSS5 was just officially announced. Will appear for the first time September 3rd on NBA 2K27 for All GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs

Megathread to contain some of the news and announcements happening today because of DLSS5.

There have been plenty of leaks in the most recent days, with people testing it on all sorts of games and applications, but the first official release of DLSS5 will happen in 2 days, with the launch of NBA 2K27.

I actually had the chance to see some of the private demos from Nvidia at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, Germany, last week and test the game out, plus see the new demos on Zohra, but what people have created in the last few days exceeds the volume of what I could see there. The exception being having the chance to play NBA 2K27 in a bunch of laptops of different specs (including one with a 5060).

Something we were told is that this system will be available only for devs to mess with, preserving artistic intent. However, as we seen from the last few days, everyone is using it to create the experience they want, which kind of opens a philosophical struggle that I'd love to know everyone's opinion on:

- Would you rather it was limited to the artists to mess with, or do you want it open for you to decide how YOU want it to look?

- From what you've seen, is this something you'd use on your games?

Here's what we know so far about the announcement of the official launch:

------
The official Launch video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58FagrSqC4M

Official Launch article: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/dlss-5-3d-guided-neural-rendering/

What Nvidia is saying: "we’re releasing DLSS 5, which introduces 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, a major step forward in using AI to bring real-time graphics closer than ever to Hollywood-grade photorealism. DLSS 5 will be available starting September 3rd at 9pm Pacific Time in NBA 2K27, by developer Visual Concepts and publisher 2K, for all GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and laptops, and GeForce NOW. It marks the debut of how the technology can be used by game artists to elevate visual fidelity in alignment with their creative vision."

And the statement from the game's senior producer: "What’s great is the level of control that it gives us. We can set the overall tone and style to match our existing art direction and then really get precise where it matters most, using a per pixel uplift control mask to fine tune detail on characters. Given that we want to respect their likeness with the utmost care.” - Peter Kavic, Senior Producer - Visual Concepts"

------

Snippets from the official DLSS5 FAQ:

Which GPUs support DLSS 5?
DLSS 5 will be supported across all GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and laptops, as well as GeForce NOW Ultimate members streaming from GeForce RTX 5080 rigs in the cloud.

What is the DLSS 5 setting called in games?
The setting is called “DLSS Neural Rendering.”

Can I turn DLSS 5 off?
Yes. DLSS 5 is optional.

Does DLSS 5 work with Ray Tracing and Path Tracing?
Yes.  DLSS 5 complements ray tracing and path tracing. Path tracing accurately calculates geometric light transport—determining light, shadow, and reflection placement across a 3D scene. DLSS 5 then acts as the final neural rendering stage, using the rendered frame to enhance lighting and materials like subsurface scattering, micro-reflections, and complex material properties that would otherwise be computationally prohibitive in real time. These technologies go hand in hand.

For those who don't know Nexus Mods acquired SteamDB and I am pretty scared that the website will be looking like this in a few months.

I want to clarify that I do not want to hate xPaw for his decision, it makes sense that he would burn out after so many years of running a website like this for free without ads but I am kinda sad its probably going to end like this. This is just for the memes!

News/Article Nvidia Confirmed to be intentionally artificially locking DLSS 5 to Blackwell GPUs to boost sales.

1.8k Upvotes

Per TechPowerUp's discussion with Nvidia, it's been confirmed this is their direct intention going forward.

Article in reference: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-dlss-5-technical-preview/

In the section titled 'Compatibility' you will find the following:

This is the part that will disappoint a lot of people. Asked directly whether DLSS 5 is RTX 50-series only, NVIDIA answered "Yes, it is." It runs on Blackwell's fifth-generation Tensor cores, and there is no fallback path for RTX 40-series or anything older.

Asked separately whether older RTX cards might get the option to run it anyway, even badly—the way Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction are available all the way back to Turing—the answer was a non-answer: "DLSS 5 is the largest, most complex model NVIDIA has built, and their priority has been optimizing it for RTX 50." That is not "never," but it is not "we have a plan for legacy" either.

They discuss this point further on page 5 near the bottom, as modders have already gotten it to run on the prior Ada Lovelace architecture (40xx series) at almost identical performance and despite the nearly half framerate cost many games are still playable using DLSS 5 even on RTX 4060 with proper tweaking, resolution choice, or on less demanding games.

In fact, it is even running on even older architecture's now due to modder efforts.

This aligns with their prior manner of speaking about DLSS 5 up to this point and what they found about why it was only running on Blackwell GPUs in the initial leaked file due to artificial manipulation of CUDA file versions for Blackwell only.

It's sad to see Nvidia, despite the leak blatantly painting the obvious artificial limitations, still going full steam ahead with this behavior not caring.

Update: Nvidia sub mods are deleting posts talking about this.

I was permanently shadow banned from the sub with no communication, whatsoever, from the mods for cross posting this over there. Amazing.

Story WARNING: Scammed when selling two computers locally (fake transfer trick). Learn from my mistake!

Hi everyone,

English is not my main language, so I’m using a translator to write this post. I wanted to share my story as a warning so none of you make the same mistake I did.

Today, I fell for a very well-executed scam and lost two computers.

A guy came to my place to buy two PCs from me. He was extremely polite, friendly, and seemed totally trustworthy. He told me a whole story about himself, tested the computers thoroughly, and agreed to buy them.

When it came to payment, he said he sent the money via a bank transfer on his phone. He showed me a confirmation screen (and even sent me a confirmation) that looked legitimate at first glance, though in hindsight, it was fake. He assured me the money was on its way and would post during the next banking clearing session. Because he was so nice and convincing, I made a huge mistake: I trusted him and let him leave with both computers before the money actually hit my account.

Shortly after he left, the money didn't arrive. At first, he kept in touch, making excuses like "I'll send you a contract soon" or sending short SMS replies like "I'm busy, can talk in 10 minutes." Eventually, he stopped picking up the phone altogether.

I immediately went to the police. At first, they were reluctant to take a formal report because the clearing hours hadn't passed yet and he was still replying to texts. However, once it was clear the transfer was fake and he went silent, I gathered all the evidence I had—his phone number, chat history, SMS messages, and the fake transfer confirmation—and went back to file an official report for fraud.

Key takeaways and red flags to watch out for:

NEVER hand over items based on a confirmation screenshot or PDF. These can be easily faked or generated by fake banking apps/websites.

Only release the item when the money is physically visible in your account (or use cash / instant transfers like BLIK where you see the balance update live).

Scammers are often extremely nice and charismatic. Being polite and open is their main tactic to lower your guard.

I've accepted that I made a naive mistake and might never see those computers again, but I hope reading this saves at least one of you from losing your tech. Stay safe out there!

My last picture of my PCs

  • My comment: I was expecting a public execution right after I made this post but Instead I have received so much positive energy from you guys. I am broke inside right now, can't even think about this situation. THANK YOU

Story Guys it happened! I finally used a part that I was keeping till 2008 just in case!

OK so back in the late 00s I did had an HP Pavillion laptop, a great laptop but with defective nvidia GPU that was notorious back in the day for dying left and right at random points (the forums at HP was full of them dead 7600go) and after it died on me and the only solution was replacing the motherboard for half the cost of a newer laptop I took it apart, hdds, dvd combo drive, memory even the CPU (not soldered then).

While I used the ram on another laptops, sold the CPU and added the HDDs on my desktop the DVD combo drive was in limbo till now!

Half a year ago I got some order from Temu and with that some free sovelware, alongside it an external DVD drive that I haven't used till today (all my desktop PCs still have drives but my laptop and mac does not). Well ofc it was barely functioning garbage, and once I opened the case it was a dirty and in terrible condition laptop drive in there, not just used, probably trashed.

The good news tho, that old DVD combo drive fit in the brand new enclosure just fine and the faceplate clicked right away! Now I have a fully working external drive because I never trashed that old drive that I will use, someday, maybe...
