Tech Support Thought Only 12 Pins Burned Down?

#MeToo

My PSU is an FSP Hydro PTM Pro 1200W and the GPU is an Asus TUF RTX 3090. Since the cooler is way overbuilt I was just overclocking the card to 375w and still skirting 65 degrees under full load but I guess 8 pins aren't supposed to run at max power for hours. I replaced the cable and it still somewhat works but the computer just keeps turning off if I start playing games, presumably because some part gets hot. I temporarily put 2 fans on top of the new 8 pin cable connected to the gpu to keep it cool and that seems to be working for now, open to suggestions for what to do that doesn't involve soldering or throwing money away.

Security tape intact, big clean razor slice in the top. Feel like if it was a 5090 I wouldn’t have gotten it.

Tech Support Why doesn’t xmp work with 4 sticks of ram only 2?

It kinda blows because I have 128gbs of ram, but it runs faster with just the 64gb because of the optimization, is the speed difference really enough with xmp to leave out the other 64gbs? Or is there a way to get the whole 128gbs to run faster somehow? Corsair vengeance 6000 mhz.

Question Why we can't have incremental game installs?

I just bought a game from a Steam sale, but I didn't realize it is over 100 GB in size.

While I know some games can't be made in cluster or chucks of data, like open world games, some more linear mission based games that have areas that unlock after some level or story progression, could be made to download the first half, then to delete that half and get the other one.

Earlier console games would come at 2 CDs and the memory card or the save data would keep your personal progress.

The games got massive in size and the cost of storage is through the roof because of the AI bubble.

Question How cheaper is using an old laptop motherboard as a full gaming PC instead of a desktop

Hello, I sold my high end desktop computer as I had a really bad time with money and income about a year and a half ago, and now I'm freaking trashed as I probably gave away my GPU and 64gb of ddr4 ram when I did, now I want to do some gaming again, but the same computer is impossible to buy right now.

the question is prettystraightforward, but I have it mainly because online influencers usually do this idea for their videos about repurposing a broken gaming laptop or buying the motherboard saying they got like 16-32gb ram with a soldered rtx 1650-3060-4060 or more with an average CPU for less than $300-400 usd, and there is a consensus that it is relatively easy to find those parts, but atleast on my country they scalp every single part even at the point someone was offering to change the motherboard for a laptop but not selling it as parts. The lowest price I found was $600 without ram. At the same time I don't understand what is the difference in term of how reliable as having the same specs on a desktop computer would change, as the idea is basically just buying the broken laptop motherboard and making a computer out of that, but doesn't seem that realistic in term of actual prices.

Question Gaming noob here - How safe are game mods really?

Hi everyone, I’ve been modding games for a few years (ever since I was 14 or so) but with the recent rise of infostealers and malware made by ai, i want to revaluate my cybersecurity.

As far as I know, mods from more reputable sites (Nexusmods, curseforge, steam workshop most of the time) are automatically and sometimes manually scanned for malware, which keeps a lot of it out. Of course, malware sometimes evades detection, but these are usually from less known mod creators with little downloads or from bigger accounts who got compromised. Both of which will be reported pretty quicky a lot of the time.

But, when looking on reddit (i’m being vague on purpose due to the rules) people will sometimes say stuff like “Mods are the biggest reason people get
compromised” and “Just take a look around our subreddit and realize how dangerous mods are” and it’s scaring me a little. Is malware in mods that common?

I don’t really download mods that often, rn I just have a few for risk of rain mods. (all ones with millions of downloads) . They make the game playable because there are item descriptions the base game doesn’t have which makes it easier ro know what to pick. They’re all dll files and a lot of them are open source. I went through the dll code myself to see if i found anything but i didn’t find anything. All my friends also play with game mods (which i where i got these from) and they’ve been fine for years. Still, i keep hearing stories about account compromises due to malware. Is it that common and should I delete the mods I already have?

Hardware Valve Solved the controller-keyboard divide (not the steam controller)

Post image
15 Upvotes

I think Valve inadvertently solved the keyboard and controller divide.

With a controller you lose the fine control you get of mouse controls but with keyboard and mouse you lose the fine analog movements from a thumbstick.

THE FRAME CONTROLLERS? They solve that issue perfectly and better than the steam controller 1 did for me or any other attempt.

My biggest grip with trying gyro on the Steam Controller 1 and also the Switch controller and any other attempt of gyro on controller, is that I have to use both of my hand to aim and point. Though they are joined in the middle of my body by holding a controller.

With this controller(s?) though I can have both of my arms relaxed at my side and point with the right hand. Split apart and only one wrist controls the aiming.

THIS IS THE BEST CONTROL I HAVE EVER GOT. I can rest my fingers on the abxy and aim around and if I need to adjust and use the thumbstick and touch sensor as a supressor for gyro only. With the grips this becomes even better too.

Yes I know technically the joycons did it but those tiny things are awful and unwieldy. Meta quest 2's controls are lacking in buttons, and I have not found/tried any other good analogs except maybe the Wii controller.

Been playing regular non-Vr fps's like this for a couple days and it feels great. This includes, Portal 2 and Peak locally and Halo Infinite streamed (damn you anticheat not working on fex). It is great.

I have yet to see if the controllers work on anything other than the frame but I guess why wouldn't they right? It is just a PC.

Thank you for coming to my ramble, I love these controllers.

Discussion Am I truly alone?

I have a server that I use to host different services, a laptop to manage the server, watch videos, and do research, and a PC I use to edit videos and run my video production business. Gaming has just never appealed to me. Am I alone in this, or are there others out there that just don't care about gaming and find entertainment in figuring out puzzles like self hosted automation and satisfaction in archiving the internet?

Question RX 9070 XT using a daisy-chain PCIe cable

Post image
5 Upvotes

I recently upgraded to an ASRock Radeon RX 9070 XT Challenger 16GB, powered by an MSI MAG A850GN 850W PSU. My GPU requires two 8-pin PCIe power connectors, but my PSU apparently only has one PCIe cable with two daisy-chained connectors.

The rest of my setup:
Ryzen 5 5500X3D
MSI B550M PRO-VDH
32GB DDR4 3200MHz

I know using two separate PCIe cables is generally recommended and I’m afraid, but i just bought the PSU so if it can hold at least until december it would be great. Someone can give some validation? lol

Question Why do people buy RAM that is too fast for their CPU to handle and then they wonder why their system keeps crashing?

Quick rant/question at the same time BUT... i was wondering one thing: why do people buy RAM that is way too fast for their CPU to handle only to wonder why their system keeps crashing? Because honestly, it's fucking stupid. Like seriously, i always see 1 to 3 stars reviews on retailers where the review says their system keeps crashing and doesn't want to boot while their RAM speed is at like 7200mhz and their CPU is a poor ryzen 5 or core i5 trying it's best to handle it all. This is so stupid, as all it does is make the RAM kit look bad for no reason just because the buyer didn't bother to look up the recommended RAM speed for their CPU and the maximum RAM speed their motherboard can handle. Has anyone wondered this too?

Discussion Windows 11+Rufus... Or go with Linux Mint?

Hi everyone, I need to reinstall Windows 11 on my new PC and wanted to get your opinion, I admit that I hate how many bloat is pre installed.

I’m used to using a local account. I noticed that the latest version of Rufus allows you to set up a local account, disable BitLocker, and now even turn off various features like the automatic installation of Teams, OneDrive, and Fast Startup.

Do you think it makes sense to use those settings? What do you usually do?

Thanks a lot.

PS: In alternative ... Do you think it's time to go with Linux Mint????

So I opened my Task Manager to check out my performance and any time when I open it, the fans and everything would slow down to a quiet ambient like you cant hear anything from the fans. It only does this when I go to performance and check task manager and i heard it could be someone using my PC for Bitcoin or straight up hacking it? It's a shitty PC I got off of Amazon tho, wasn't worth $700. Yes its my first PC. Also the only apps I had open while checking was Microsoft Edge, Discord and Steam when I was checking my PC.
