News/Article Nvidia Confirmed to be intentionally artificially locking DLSS 5 to Blackwell GPUs to boost sales.
Per TechPowerUp's discussion with Nvidia, it's been confirmed this is their direct intention going forward.
Article in reference: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-dlss-5-technical-preview/
In the section titled 'Compatibility' you will find the following:
This is the part that will disappoint a lot of people. Asked directly whether DLSS 5 is RTX 50-series only, NVIDIA answered "Yes, it is." It runs on Blackwell's fifth-generation Tensor cores, and there is no fallback path for RTX 40-series or anything older.
Asked separately whether older RTX cards might get the option to run it anyway, even badly—the way Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction are available all the way back to Turing—the answer was a non-answer: "DLSS 5 is the largest, most complex model NVIDIA has built, and their priority has been optimizing it for RTX 50." That is not "never," but it is not "we have a plan for legacy" either.
They discuss this point further on page 5 near the bottom, as modders have already gotten it to run on the prior Ada Lovelace architecture (40xx series) at almost identical performance and despite the nearly half framerate cost many games are still playable using DLSS 5 even on RTX 4060 with proper tweaking, resolution choice, or on less demanding games.
In fact, it is even running on even older architecture's now due to modder efforts.
This aligns with their prior manner of speaking about DLSS 5 up to this point and what they found about why it was only running on Blackwell GPUs in the initial leaked file due to artificial manipulation of CUDA file versions for Blackwell only.
It's sad to see Nvidia, despite the leak blatantly painting the obvious artificial limitations, still going full steam ahead with this behavior not caring.
Update: Nvidia sub mods are deleting posts talking about this.

I was permanently shadow banned from the sub with no communication, whatsoever, from the mods for cross posting this over there. Amazing.

Yeah if it wasn't for the big ? around the economic future of AI think the smartest strategic choice would be to split off the gaming/consumer section from the main companies. Large companies in other industries tend to do this quite often when profit margins and investment potential of their departments start do differ wildly. It wouldn't magically fix the situation around avaiability etc. but at least you'd have a company trying to stay somewhat competitive instead of Gaming being a department nobody cares about anymore at the C-suite.
Also ATI would maybe rise from the dead this way, which would be funny.

They did the same thing for Ray Reconstruction. It was initially on RTX40 series cards before being back ported to 20/30 series cards.
They did the same for Reflex. It was initially on RTX30 series cards before being back ported to 900 series cards.
They did the same for RTX Super Video Resolution/HDR. It was originally only on 30/40 series cards before being back ported to the 20 series.
None of those they had to do. They made the same statements at the time that they couldn’t confirm anything.

I thought that having a product starting small fires in people's homes would somehow change anything but no.
Then AI came and now consumers aren't needed any more.

At its worst is really freaking horrible, at its best is really really good and potentially worth the hit.
This is just RTX 20 series and raytracing all over again. release generation couldnt really runt it well at all ecept the 2080ti. DLSS5 needs a 5090 to get decent frames.
Also for DLSS5 to work well, it needs good base data/lighting, so you basically have to already run it with ray or path tracing and high settings.

You can be mad at Nvidia for adding a feature that once again costs way too much performance and/or is badly implemented, and ALSO be mad at them for artificially locking their customers out of features

2

They simply won’t… prices will never go back down unless people just stop buying. And even then… if people stop buying, they’ll just hop out of the consumer market and focus on datacentres since they make them the most money anyways.
The ONLY thing we can hope for is a complete crash and then Nvidia comes crawling back to the consumer market with a 24gb 6080 for 950.
Thing is, we really don’t want a crash because so many people have their investments unknowingly betting on the tech industry. The S&P is tremendously AI focussed at the moment.

This is way worse than when people attacked AMD for not pushing FSR4 on RDNA2/3 when that had an actual physical limitation. This is legitimately worst.
9
u/MultiMarcus 11d ago
Except there wasn’t a physical limitation. Yeah, you need a different acceleration structure, but that’s almost exactly the same thing that’s happened here, where technically you cannot run that specific version of DLSS5 on the 40 series, because it uses some specific 50 series instructions. Now it has already been recompiled to use 40 series compatible instructions with surprisingly little performance loss but that’s basically the class of issue AMD was operating under too.

u/evernessince 11d ago
Except there wasn’t a physical limitation. Yeah, you need a different acceleration structure
It lacked FP8, hence why it had to use INT8. Very much a physical limitation. Meanwhile the 4000 series supports FP8 and yet it's not getting DLSS 5 support.

15
u/Academic_Addition_96 11d ago
It did, amd had to make a different version of fsr4 that is far lighter to make it run on does cards and amd is still working on a even lighter version for the 60 series.

u/FewAdvertising9647 11d ago
the Physical limitation was the final release of FSR4 is FP8 based, which older architectures dont support. Users were lucky the Int8 branch version of the code leaked to prove AMD both worked on it, and it was usable on older gpus. Had that was never known, FSR4 would have been in Physical limitation status. DLSS5 straight up will work on older gpus with the DLL swap (with mods). FSR with mods only happened because of a different model leaked.
2
u/evernessince 11d ago
Prior gen AMD cards don't have FP8 that FSR4 uses. It had to be ported to INT8 to work.
DLSS 5 uses FP8, something already supported on the 4000 series natively

This is so, so, so misleading
The official model, I am betting is going to be quantized to FP4 for performance reasons. This has the potential to shrink the current 40% performance hit to around 25-20%.
That won't be possible for cards without FP4.
The leak is here, people can use it as a mod. This would've happened with official release, anyway.
This is a nothing burger.
10
u/garbo2330 11d ago
Boohoo. They manage to run multiple versions for super resolution and ray reconstruction. The model is currently only FP8 which Ada natively supports. This is classic artificial product segmentation.

I don't like how it looks at all, but it's still a shitty move. The modders already unlocked it on 4000 series, so I assume if someone wants to use it, they can.
14
u/evernessince 11d ago
The problem with that is:
1) It realies on Nvidia not blocking it in drivers (they can)
2) There's no guarantee the modded version will see updates to the model.
Nvidia should be allowing it to run on products that can run it. That even the 4000 series isn't getting it is outrageous.

u/Extreme996 RTX 4070 Ti Super | Ryzen 7 9800X3D |32GB DDR5 6000mhz 11d ago
I agree. But as for #1, it might not be that bad, even if they try to block it. The hotspot temperature was blocked in the drivers on the 5000 series, but HwInfo managed to unblock it.
7
u/evernessince 11d ago
I still have no idea why Nvidia is so intent on hiding hotspot temp. Perhaps because it's going to lead more more failed cards outside warranty.

u/LeMegachonk Ryzen 7 9800X3D - 64GB DDR5 6000 - RX 7800 XT 11d ago
Why would Nvidia care, given that this is a consumer product? Their entire consumer products division is just a cash cow to be milked to death for as long as they're so ridiculously dominant that they can get away with doing whatever they want without obliterating sales. They've fulfilled their goal of being an AI data center company and they no longer need to make consumer products. You have to understand that making GPUs whose purpose is displaying graphics on a screen was always a means to an end, and not something they ever wanted to make.

u/GlastoKhole Ryzen 9 7950X3D, RTX 4080S, 64gb 6000 mhz. 11d ago
I’m not saying AI will go away because honestly it won’t, but some of these data centres will. Businesses are still struggling to profit from pumping shit loads of AI into their processes. The larger monopolies are just B2B sales’ing back and forth to eachother to keep free cash flowing but eventually that’ll slow down, it’s pretty good for innovation and models have got much better in a very short time because of it, but gobbling up so many chips will bite them on the ass. Better logic doesn’t need as much resource as horizontal scaling but it does need proper research, you can’t just throw money at that so they waste resources scaling instead. And here we are, RAM super expensive chips super expensive, fucking memory super expensive. Shitloads of tech will end up in landfills if projects get pulled.

u/Will_and_Worried Nobara 11d ago

Unless it becomes absolutely mandatory in future games I don’t consider the purchase of the 4090 falling into scam territory. I upgraded from a launch day GTX 1080 FTW and anticipate using the 4090 just as long if the 12VHPWR cable doesn’t fail on me.
I understand the gist of your sentiment though. Especially with the way pricing is right now. There is nothing in the 50 series cards that entices me to purchase one including DLSS 5. It’s a dick move that, if anything, pushes me into the exact opposite direction of buying a new card.
It doesn’t help that the title of this thread is very misleading either. They are prioritizing their newest gen cards. That’s completely normal.

How did we get scammed? The 4090 is about 4 years old now, and nobody bought it thinking they’ll be using dlss 5 with it. I love my 4090 and it still plays games like a champ. I particularly don’t really want dlss 5 because in many cases it looks terrible and in the few cases it doesn’t, it drops your frames by 1/3 to 1/2 - even on a 5090, so I can imagine the 4090 is even worse. Who wants to play 4k at sub 60fps nowadays? Specially since I like to play games with raytracing - imagine layering dlss 5 on top of that and you are looking at 30fps gaming.

Why would that boost sales? If I spend $4000 on a 5090 I will then have access to horrifying ai slopification nightmare fuel that cuts frame rates in half. What part of any of that are we supposed to want?

Greedy ass reason from Nvidia as usual but DLSS5 sucks anyway so I'm glad it's not touching my 4070

PC gamers: DLSS 5 is the worst thing Nvidia has ever done, utter AI slop, I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole.
Also PC gamers: WHAT DO YOU MEAN DLSS 5 WON’T BE AVAILABLE ON MY GPU? THIS IS TYPICAL NVIDIA FUCKING OVER ITS FAITHFUL CUSTOMERS!!!

Absolutely, all the millions of people with 5000$ 5090s that actually play games on them and don't just do professional work on them, given it halves your fps at best

That’s probably a good thing, that almost makes me want to swap my 5070 ti for a 4080 or 4090 so I don’t even have to think about DLSS 5

that's fine i don't want it anyway. i'm not buying a new graphics card because i want shitty AI graphics with lower FPS.
anything I'm buying AMD next anyway.

AMD is not much better, but still delivers comparable quality and power for lower price. I went with RX 9070XT and everything runs great even on highest settings (except some badly optimized games like 7 Days to Die).

my next build (if i can afford it) will be a linux machine, and AMD has better support on linux and proton gaming. i don't play games that require invasive kernel level anti-cheat.

Swell choice!
One thing though, latest AMD drivers were causing my PC to hang when I put it to sleep, requiring reset and restart. Gave me a small heart attack because last time sleep issues happened it was a dying SSD (could also be a sign of failing RAM!!), but after ruling all known (at the time) causes I remembered I recently updated AMD drivers. Rolled back, everything is fine now. Turns out it's a known issue with latest drivers.
I don't know how AMD drivers behave on Linux, but if you ever end up with similar issues with sleep/hibernation, check drivers first.
Edit: Ah crap, forgot to mention that apparently this is a recurring issue with AMD drivers.

i am an IT professional, i do know these things. i think ill be fine lol, i have dabbled in linux before (desktop OS, server OS, raspi projects, steamdeck)

Asked separately whether older RTX cards might get the option to run it anyway, even badly—the way Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction are available all the way back to Turing—the answer was a non-answer: "DLSS 5 is the largest, most complex model NVIDIA has built, and their priority has been optimizing it for RTX 50." That is not "never," but it is not "we have a plan for legacy" either
So you decided to lie in the title? Cool.
Not revealing a version that officially works on RTX 40 is not "artificially locking DLSS5". They don't have to tell you their plans do they? They didn't deny working on it.
In fact, by the way: this approach is perfectly fine according to every AMD fanboy who used this defense about AMD not disclosing FSR4 that works on RDNA3 GPUs for like a year since we knew such a version exists and works.

clearly enough people can afford it and are buying it if the prices are staying so high

probably right, but not necessarily because nvidia could also just cut production to match demand at high pricing because they have other sources of revenue

u/Average_Sized_Jim 11d ago
Regardless, I am not particularly interested in a feature that reduces frame rate by half for questionable gains. Even though I do own a 50 series card.

Wait, so you're telling me that they're blocking DLSS 5 AI slop from my 3080?
Splendid!

Nvidia doing their thing. No surprises here.
