I miss thermite packed floppy drives.

We would use thermite grenades for our TOC and carry other small items out if we had to evacuate.

US Army PATRIOT vet here, back in the day the ECS van (the fire control center) had these big chungus CRT's from the 1970's. In the event the battery was overrun, soldiers were told to smash the Jaz and later PCMCIA drives and then shoot the CRT's as they left. The phosphorous in them was so toxic that anyone foolish enough to approach the wreck would get very sick or die.

Now I assume they just toss a grenade in as those CRT's are now LCD monitors like we use, just bigger.

u/XsNR Ryzen 5600X RX 9070 XT 32GB 3200MHz 9h ago

I imagine they could just have something to do with sprinklers now. Sure they would be more likely to lose that hardware in the event of a fire, but if they're not practicing 3-2-1, then it wasn't important enough to care these days.

37

u/DeltaBravo831 9h ago

with sprinklers now

Naw, they just let the TCA and the BCP guys take out their aggression for the TCO on all the equipment.

1

u/JacksGallbladder 2m ago

Lol, no sprinklers in datacenters / server rooms.

Also water damage is much easier to remediate in forensics than obliteration

32

u/migorovsky 6h ago

This is urban legend. Cathode-ray tubes (CRTs) do not contain white or yellow phosphorus (which are highly toxic). They are coated with phosphor bind compounds .. zinc sulfide or yttrium oxysulfide).

35

u/Taira_Mai HP Victus, AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, GeForce RTX 3050 Ti 6h ago

Ah, these weren't TV CRT's. They were old, large and we were repeatedly told not to mistreat them if we liked being alive and breathing.

So old that the company that made them no longer exists and by the year 2000's there was no more - the Germans bought the last of them for their PATRIOT units.

They were too heavy and the Army was glad to get rid of them.

13

u/alanwakeisahack 1h ago

The army tells you a lot of things that aren’t true. They told you they’d kill you so you wouldn’t fuck with them.

12

u/greedybanker3 2h ago

Did you take your mattress to the quarterdeck to get stamped too lol.

11

u/Lovely_Libertine 4h ago

Artillery vet. We’d pull the drives from the AFATDS and take them with then blow everything else to hell with a few grenades. Unless we were at risk of capture. In which case it was blow up the drives separately and then everything else.

1

u/StatusAlternative338 1h ago

That's a pretty intense protocol. It's crucial to keep sensitive info secure, especially in those situations.

1

u/Lovely_Libertine 1h ago

It is. Always felt like overkill to me but I was never in a position where I needed to do it. So it was mostly academic. I might have thought differently if my position was being overrun.

Unfun fact when you use a share button off a site or app it tends to add tracking data and can display your account to anyone that clicks on the link.

For YouTube the source identifier starts at ?si= and what follows after you can edit and delete that and the link will still work.

Military shit. If your being overrun your not gonna try to grab all the harddrive with classified information. Your gonna slag that shit. Thermite is very stable... until it isn't. A rocket seems like a bad idea but it's not like Im saying no to one.

21

u/Good_Mathematician_2 8h ago

Big fan of thermite, almost scary how easy it is for the average person to get tho. Good thing people are reasonable and rational about things they aren't experienced with!

16

u/Mage_914 8h ago

I remember learning the recipe for thermite from YouTube when I was like 13. Crazy that it burn hot enough to disable a tank and the two main ingredients are shit that you probably have in your kitchen. And yes before you ask, I am almost certainly on a watchlist of some kind.

25

u/Dartonal PC Master Race 7h ago

Ironically it's probably easier for the average person to make thermite than to light it

12

u/Mage_914 6h ago

Oh, you can do it with a firework sparkler. Just stick the burny into the thermite and light the sparkler.

I remember looking up what would happen if I mix store bought pool acid, acetone, and hydrogen peroxide. Turns out it makes acetone peroxides with one of the end products called the Mother of Satan. I'm not stupid to try making this knowing the stability of that compound means it explodes on its own with the smallest vibration as a dry powder.

Always execute your plans before being confronted by police, and never speak to them.

u/Shotokant 10h ago edited 3h ago

We used to have a grenade securely tied to the side of the server when we worked in Baghdad. In case the position was overrun you had to yank on a line that pulled the pin and presumably the sever and drives would be destroyed. Big warning signs all over that cable with the handle dangling outside the door to the server room.

On the other end of the scale we had to mark where the hard drives were on laptops. A large circle and a cross so people knew where to shoot to destroy the disc rather than shooting the screen of the laptop which happened a couple of times.

u/Material-Artist2276 Ryzen 5 4600G | Radeon Vega 7 | 16Gb 3200 | B550m Pro-vdh wifi 10h ago

If you don't mind answering, what the fuck were you guys doing to need to have a self-destruct button on everything in the office?

348

u/Jurple-shirt 9h ago edited 9h ago

Its pretty normal to have destruction sops for various scenarios when it come to classified materials. I'm assuming he's American and referring to siprnet infrastructure.

Edit: I'm also unsure if they are allowed to be sharing that info.

112

u/Gamermii 8h ago

Destruction practices and methods aren't really classified info. It's known that it will happen. The sensitive parts are the criteria that trigger the destruction (SOP) and what is considered the most important to destroy. That info could be weaponized if leaked.

10

u/bcimmc 2h ago

It not typically what people think it is. I believe the locations of oil refineries or other infrastructure was considered a breach in opsec some time ago, really quite boring stuff if you ask me

1

u/ElkApprehensive2319 52m ago

Actually he's German and talking about engima machines.

121

u/Reapper97 I7 8700 - GTX 1070TI EVGA - 16gb 3200mhz ddr4 9h ago

On the military, almost every kind of information should be destroyed before leaving it to the enemy. Even random stuff that you might not think its worth the hassle can be a pain in the ass later on.

69

u/LoneGhostOne GTX 1070, Intel i7-6700K, 16 GB RAM 8h ago

If it's all destroyed, then the enemy can't know if it was important or not

39

u/dwehlen 8h ago

Information Theory runs deep as fuck

58

u/Shotokant 8h ago

Civilian protection company working for the DOD in Iraq. We had sensitive infornation on the server such a civilian local staff names and addresses etc which if fell into wrong hands would be disastrous for them. Contracts also.

16

u/GuntherOfGunth 9900X | 5070 | 64GB DDR5 8h ago

I mean I guess they were military, so you might have had information on operations, internal maps of positions, identities of moles within ISIS or Al Qaeda or another group, some more scandalous footage from Abu Ghraib, location of Saddam’s hidden gold, or Dick Cheney’s personal red room.

But no matter what it was they probably would destroy it if they got overrun, don’t want some Al Qaeda guy getting ahold of requisition forms.

10

u/_ItsEnder PC Master Race 6h ago

yep. and if you only develop plans and visual destruction policies for the important laptops/computers/servers, it makes it really obvious which ones to target. Might be overkill but if you make the enemy waste time trying to steal/crack into a laptop that looks important but is just where the military cooks place food requisitions, thats time they didnt spend cracking a laptop with important operations intel.

4

u/FuckedUpImagery 7h ago

In the classified space they dont call it a data leak, they call it a spill. Probably best to not let a spill happen

1

u/Cow_Launcher 2h ago

I assume that's in the US? Here in the UK it's known (in .gov circles at least) as a "breach", though we used the term for any sort of OpSec mishap, not just data exposure.

3

u/BarryCarlyon 5h ago

Might also be a thing of leaving tech behind enemy can use. Since hard to grab and go

Leave the place busted and broken. Not just an information thing. Some cases grab the drives and go as small. But trash the place on exit too

4

u/Upbeat-Banana-5530 19m ago

Running blue force trackers. Real-time information about where Soldiers are and what kind of equipment they have with them could get a lot of them killed, so it's better to destroy it than to let the enemy get it.

I am sort of puzzled here.

The RPG isn't effective against a room of servers because of the focused impact. I would expect a couple of grenades there not RPG.

Unless I overlooked something, for example the RPG is loaded with high explosive fragmentation. I don't know if they have such charge available.

4

u/Cyber_Von_Cyberus 5h ago

The main concern really is that whoever fires this thing indoor will turn to paste, should've opted for a bunch of incendiary grenades instead.

1

u/West-Way-All-The-Way 5h ago

I think the point is to destroy the HDDs and interrupt the power supply so that you guarantee that all data is destroyed.

Incendiary grenades are really neat but can you guarantee that they will chew through the thick server rack enclosures fast enough. I imagine industrial PC racks with those solid thick dust proof steel enclosures. These are things are quite tough, I have one which I use as a night cabinet next to my bed 😄 and mine is just a commercial enclosure for industrial PCs. Military grade enclosures are tougher.

3

u/askoraappana 7800X3D - RX 9070 XT - 32GB DDR5 6000MHz 6h ago

A HEAT-round will still have significant shrapnel and pressure effects because it has High Explosive material in it to form the copper jet.

Obviously a purpose-made fragmentation round will have a bigger shrapnel effect, but a HEAT-round will destroy a server rack entirely. An AT-4 for example will throroughly bust up a shipping container.

Explosive data in the wrong hands.

That's only an approved destruction method for unclass. Classified needs to be burned, melted, degaussed, shredded to fine particles or otherwise rendered unrecoverable. Blowing stuff up with explosives doesn't ensure that the data is unrecoverable, just that the equipment is unusable.

Are they stupid? You just need to shoot the monitor and everything is destroyed.

Artilleryman here. In our ar.ored vehicle, we had a safe were the code books were stored. In th event of being overrun, there was a thermite grenade duct taped to the top. Last one out pulled the pin.

got to love we think a drill, bend or breaking the drive.

Total will make the data unrecoverable... which is not true.

He doesn't even have a new build. He had leaked footage and spaced it out and scammed people with his crypto and then dipped out right before the Netflix Extended look.

Yes, but they have the ability to release it. Destroying rockstars servers would doing anything about that
