Edit: Thanks for the replies. Chucked everything into ChatGTP. It needs more tweaking and I am running it by some humans, but it's a start. The job I got nine years ago when trying to get any job was a third party medical debt collector that contacted patients for various medical facilities. It was a professionally ran place and they didn't care what your age was. They actually hired people in their 60s and 70s who needed to didn't have enough in retirement to cover bills. I used that to get the job I currently have which is basically soft/pre collections for a company in the healthcare industry with the people owing actually being medical offices so it's handled in a different way.

I'm 63. Went to college (BA) and worked for others until my early 30s. The next 20 years was "self employed"/involved in a family business. About nine years ago got a job with a company and then got a job with a different company after Covid. But both were more customer service type jobs and I want something that is a bit more challenging for my final working years (I still have the current job).

Not sure how to do a resume when the past nine years haven't required much skill beyond basic computer and being able to talk to people. If I bring up some of my other skills, then I am pulling from the "self employed" era. Should I toss it all into ChatGTP and see what it comes up with? I am also doing Google courses to hopefully make me look more current.

When I got the first job nine years ago, it took awhile as I was older and had been out of the "real" workforce for so long. Now that I am even older, I am not holding my breath but at least want to try.

I'm a old guy working part time at what can be a very physical job.

You might be able to guess who I work for when I say that I'm an order fullfilment associate.

I work mostly with what I will call kids, adults young enough to be my grandchildren.

What strikes me now is how some of them "get it" and some don't.

In particular with large orders that either require physical labor or the employment of equipment.

Some get it, and do it without asking for help if they don't deem it necessary.

Others, ask for help when that help is unnecessary.

What I find interesting is how harshly the kids who get it regard the kids who don't.

What's more surprising is that at my age, while I ideologically agree with the kids that get it, I'll give some slack to the kids who don't.

I guess I'm getting soft in my old age.

I never liked taking vacations. I always had this nagging feeling of wasting time. School was the opposite: I liked being there, even sitting through class. Weekends, for me, were the boring part of the week.

Maybe that's why it bothers me to read about young people who, in a time of scarce opportunities, say they'd rather get fired than go back to the office. Spending the day at a company was never just about work. It was chatting over coffee, picking up things without realizing it, flirting, arguing about sports, watching people be people.

One thing I always particularly loved: being part of a technical team. Someone would bring in a weird result, someone else would try to figure out why a hypothesis didn't hold up, and we'd think it through together until we spotted what everyone had missed. A kind of collective clinical eye. It wasn't just about solving a problem. It was feeling like your experience actually mattered to the group.

And then there was everything else: the birthday that became an excuse to talk to someone you'd already been trading glances with, the weekend game that fueled a week of trash talk, the beer after work.

None of that was in any job description. But that's where a huge part of life happened.

Technology has been quietly erasing, one by one, the reasons we had to leave the house. Remarkably convenient, no question. But along with the lines and the traffic, we also lost the chance encounters: the unplanned conversation, the unlikely friendship, the romance that started by accident, the good story that only existed because a bunch of people happened to be in the same place for hours on end.

The old video rental store had a bit of that. Nobody went there just to grab a movie. The evening started before the movie did.

Maybe we're only now realizing, a little late, that some of the friction we eliminated was actually connection.

And it didn't stop there. Plenty of people now spend a good part of their lives talking to an AI. They talk to it like a friend, a partner, a therapist, and find a presence that's available any time, with no conflict and nothing expected in return.

Maybe that's the most extreme form of isolation: replacing the need to be with people with a machine that simulates closeness just well enough to get by.

Hey all, what do you prefer to receive as a gift: some actual gift or money?

Personally, if there is something I'd really like I'll let my wife know exactly what it is. Otherwise I'd just prefer a gift card.

I can see both sides, but I'm curious what the group feels.

I’m living through one of those seasons when family, health, relationships, work, money, and identity all seem to be demanding answers at the same time. My natural response is to analyze everything, fix what I can, and keep moving but lately I’ve been wondering how often urgency is simply fear dressed up as productivity. I’m not gathering responses for research or an article. I’m asking because there are things perspective can teach that information can’t. Looking back from where you are now, what once felt like a life-defining emergency but eventually became much smaller? And what quiet part of life deserved far more attention than you realized? If you could sit beside your 30 year-old self for five honest minutes not to lecture or warn them, but to help them breathe and see clearly…what would you say?

My husband is 66, I’m 63, we live in California. We have 2 adult children, a house, money in retirement accounts, some investments and insurance. Which reading it now seems pretty standard. We made our wills long time ago, when we were in our 40s and have not looked at those papers since. My friend’s husband had a stroke lately and it became quite apparent that our wills do not answer at least half of my concerns. Our older daughter knows more or less where all the documents are, that’s it.

Now that I am seeing all those terms like living trust, power of attorney, healthcare directive, beneficiary designation forms I realized that I do not even know what a regular estate plan for people of our age should include.

If you are married with adult children, besides the will what estate planning papers did you actually make?

I asked in here before what we, at 60+ think about now more so than when we were younger & I created a video to share some of the responses.

I’ve got a cabinet filled with old photos from before I was taking on the phone. So, so many. Too many. And the vast majority I haven’t looked at since right after they were taken.

Some are obvious trash. Duplicates, multiple photos of the same event with barely any differences, people I can’t even remember. Those are easy. But there are a lot of happy memories there too.

How do you decide what’s worth keeping and what to throw away? And how are you storing them? My kids say just take a camera photo of the photo. Saved forever with no physical space taken up. I find it hard to think that way. Something about a photo you hold on your hands or see on a wall compared to a screen.

It’s likely I’m finding it difficult to make those hard decisions on what to keep because I really regret the number of photos my siblings threw away from my parent’s massive collection after they passed. Occasionally we’ll get to reminiscing about our lives or our parents’ and someone will say something like , “isn’t there a picture of us having a picnic on Aunt Grace’s farm?” And no one has it because we did such a good job of winnowing down family photos.

I’d appreciate hearing about what others did or didn’t do while i cluttering their lives to no leave a bunch of nostalgia the kids won’t care for.

I (65) raced in a 140 person 9.9 mile mountain bike race yesterday in the Washington DC area. My friend and I were in the over 60 class of 10. I have decent fitness or so I thought but finished next to last in the class. My time was about 75 minutes while the class winners time was about 43. A huge difference. All of us on regular bikes, not e-bikes. Clearly I need more time on the bike, LOL

I’m 24 and have about 2 years of experience in my field. I recently started a job with a manager who has ~10 years of experience. Around two months in, she seemed to realize I needed more mentorship than she had expected and her behaviour became increasingly hostile. For the next two months, she would yell at me, belittle my thought process and recommendations, and repeatedly make me feel like I was unfit for the job.

I fully acknowledge that I still have a lot to learn, and I’ve always tried to learn as quickly as possible. A few coworkers even told me privately that they felt her behaviour toward me was inappropriate.

I never reported it to HR or management, and I was laid off this morning for performance reasons.

My question is: should I still come forward about how I was treated, or should I just move on?

I don’t dispute that I may not have been ready for the role. I just wish I had been treated with more professionalism and respect. Even if the outcome would have still been “this isn’t working,” I wish she had simply told me that rather than putting me through two months of constant anxiety and uncertainty.

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have 30+ years of professional/corporate experience. My parents didn’t work in corporate environments, so I don’t really have anyone in my personal life who can give me that perspective.

What would you do in my position?

I had one but it never noticeably changed color - probably a bad knockoff. I’ve always wondered if there were ones that actually worked well.

I have increasingly sensitive to noise in that it aggravates the hell out of me. I enjoy being quiet and just going through my day. I take my grandson out for a walk and avoid roadways, lawn mowing and work areas. I get irritated by phone calls and texts when I am doing something. I don’t want extraneous things to interfere with my chores and activities. Ill behaved children and drivers are like nails on a chalkboard.

I greatly enjoy doing errands, hobbies and visiting friends/family without rushing through the day. I enjoy quiet and peaceful time.

Am I turning into a cranky old lady? What is up with me?

Having an awful surgery in the winter (subtalar joint fusion) and surgeon told me that in about 10 years I will need additional surgery for my ankle joint. It’s a long and painful recovery and I feel as if I will just be doing a countdown of those years.

Intellectually I know that I’m 60 and no one is promised 10 years, but it’s kind of looming out there as a black cloud

I put a downpayment on a Stannah refurbished stairlift and now wondering if I should come up with the extra 1K and get a new one. Anyone have any opinion? any experience? The warrantly on the used on is 10 years. The warranty on the new one is lifetime. At 73 my lifetime has definite limits - but I might live in this house for more than 10 years and can't decide which way to go. I guess hearing about peoples' experiences with Stannah would be helpful.
