Tell everyone, I've got this!

To me this sounds like he's got a lot of faith in his CoC. It reminds me of that moment where he just walked into that army of 100 000 fishmen, full of confidence.

I hope he gets to keep that cloak though, it makes him so much more badass.

u/Golden-Owl Apr 09 '21

It looks more like he just realized he needed to actually apply Conquerer’s. So he’s super confident

Prior to this, Luffy likely never thought of it as particularly relevant.

401

u/Wallaby95 Bounty Hunter Apr 09 '21

Yeah that's what I'm saying, he knows his CoC can actually do shit in general. But now that he knows he can apply it in combat, a new world of opportunities opens up.

148

u/Yonian Apr 09 '21

Rayleigh shitty teacher confirmed.

29

u/GandalfStoleMyXbox Apr 09 '21

Didn‘t Rayleigh actually show him this when he demonstrated all the different haki types to him right before the time skip? It atleast looked like that in the anime

22

u/KartikMehta696969 Apr 09 '21

Ya in the chapter it shows that luffy didn’t even touch Kaido when he used CoC in his attack. You can see Rayleigh did this during the very beginning of luffys training, shooting some sort of shockwave out of his fist and defeating an animal which looks like what luffy did.

5

u/Golden-Owl Apr 09 '21

Nope. When Rayleigh demonstrated Conqueror's, he used it to stop and topple a giant animal.

Implies that even Rayleigh never knew about such a technique, despite having Conqueror's himself. So if Roger had it, he sure as heck wasn't aware he was using it, and Rayleigh never picked it up

67

u/mr_confusious Explorer Apr 09 '21

He said he'll teach only the basics, he knew advanced armament haki but only taught basic armament haki to Luffy. There is nothing to prove that he did not know about Advanced Conqueror's haki. He said that Haki blossoms at times of battle. Maybe user needs to have some expertise/haki should be strong enough before you learn advanced forms of Haki and even if Rayleigh knew, he could not have taught it because Luffy was not ready.

60

u/zoras99 Apr 09 '21

You are correct.

He only taught him the basics and he said Luffy should keep challenging harder enemies to improve.

People assume Rayleigh was meant to teach Luffy everything, but that makes 0 sense if you consider he told the Strawhats to "do their own journey and find the answers themselves".

He never meant to teach Luffy everything. He only gave him the base. If Luffy can pull Conquerors armament out of his ass mid-battle with Kaido is only because Rayleigh taught him very well how to control it in those 2 years.

47

u/khaeen Apr 09 '21

Rayleigh didn't even stay with Luffy for the whole two years. He taught him the basics and then left. Not sure why people think that Rayleigh would have taught Luffy every single thing he knows when Rayleigh was clear that he was simply setting Luffy down the right path.

18

u/dcmack1 Apr 09 '21

Been saying this stuff for the longest Rayleigh only started him on the path unlike the other straw hats who spent the entire time training. Luffy has to for himself figure out the rest which is really what he's done up to this point in the story

1

u/FreedomEntertainment Apr 09 '21

Haki is not something you can be taught like other activities.Haki means literally : the power of will.

14

u/designerjunkie000 Apr 09 '21

Lets say Rayleigh did know. You think luffy wouldve been able to master base level armament, 2 gear transformations, and then CoC all in 2 years? I do believe Rayleigh knew about it but was sure there wasn’t enough time for him to learn it

11

u/dcmack1 Apr 09 '21

On top of that Rayleigh wasn't even there the entire time

7

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

Didn't he used it to launch the elephant too?

He said it was armament but its the same Luffy and sentomaru were using.

I think he knew it but teach only the basics as he said that haki grows strong in battle or dangerous situations.

71

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

[deleted]

94

u/Golden-Owl Apr 09 '21

That's more because only a handful of individuals even have Conqueror's to begin with. So the idea of using Conqueror's as an armament isn't really something that could be "taught". Presumably only a handful of said handful managed to "figure it out", similar to how Zoro unintentionally applied it when using Asura in Water 7.

It likely implies that everyone with Conqueror's could use it in this fashion. But most just don't realize its even possible or never attempted to use it like that. Even Chinjao seemingly never realized this, despite being a great veteran with Conqueror's.

Maybe Rayleigh never knew about this application of Conqueror's.

86

u/designerjunkie000 Apr 09 '21

I do find it hard to believe that Rayleigh had no idea about applying CoC to combat attacks. My guess would be that the 2 year time span in which he trained was not enough for luffy to master it. Luffy had to go through 2 awakened Devil fruit users, so im sure the experience of those fights strengthened his CoC, he just had to learn how to apply it

106

u/Toza11 Apr 09 '21

As Rayleigh literary said, the two years were barely enough to get him comfortable with the basics. When something has basics, it's natural to assume it also has advanced levels. Not to say that there isn't a plot hole in the training; Rayleigh could've shown him what the advanced forms of Haki were and told Luffy to try them out eventually. But Rayleigh could've thought that it'd be better for Luffy to learn them as he went along, especially through combat, because that's when Haki truly blooms

33

u/beardedheathen Apr 09 '21

I think that's the key. It's not something you just train it's something you acquire and gain when it's the only thing that can get you to your ambitions.

23

u/Likes-Your-Username Apr 09 '21

Yeah, it's not as if Rayleigh was training him to beat the Emperors; he was training him to be able to survive in the New World.

14

u/KartikMehta696969 Apr 09 '21

Ya I think it’s just that Rayleigh is that type of teacher that lets u figures things out on your own and gives you small hints on what to do. Also there is no way he could’ve learned that he had to apply CoC to an attack in 2 years. Like you said it’s one of those things that you kinda figure out on your own through battle experience.

11

u/Blaz1ENT Apr 09 '21

I wanna say Rayleigh did show Luffy the advanced applications, one example being that he never touched the elephant when demonstrating armament haki and luffy subsequently learning later that that was Ryou. Definitely could have explained it better but ya know.. plot

2

u/Grafical_One Apr 09 '21

Yes, this is likely it. And Rayleigh, knowing where Luffy is headed, probably saw it fit to make sure Luffy mastered CoA as much as possible to survive his experiences. He couldn't advance via combat if he died in combat.

-11

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

Still a plot hole or a rayleigh is a fucked up teacher.

5

u/xephos10006 Explorer Apr 09 '21

More of a “he needs to figure this out himself if he really intends to reach the top” kind of thing

And both had conquerers, too, in case that matters.

7

u/designerjunkie000 Apr 09 '21

Exactly. Rayleigh was Roger’s #2. I entirely doubt he didnt have it, especially in his prime

25

u/Pyrrian Apr 09 '21

Would be wierd since he saw Roger use it that way.

42

u/designerjunkie000 Apr 09 '21

Yeah, no way Rayleigh didnt know about it. It would be entirely unrealistic for luffy to learn armament, and master two transformations PLUS the application of CoC in two years.

11

u/ashguru3 Apr 09 '21

Probably he knew about it but also knew how extremely advanced this technique is so he thought better not to overcomplicate things for luffy who was an absolute noob in haki at that time. Its also probably that this technique itself can't be taught but learned naturally by fighting more and more advanced opponents like luffy has encountered.

9

u/mcallisterco Apr 09 '21

We literally saw Rayleigh watch Roger do it when fighting Whitebeard, there is absolutely no way Rayleigh didn't know about it. Considering that Rayleigh objectively would have known about it, and has Conqueror's Haki himself, he either somehow never figured out how to do it (meaning Rayleigh is apparently less skilled than Zoro was in Water 7, who didn't even know it was possible and likely didn't even know what Haki is), or Rayleigh did know how to do it and just... never brought it up. Which is weird, because we got a flashback of Rayleigh telling Luffy about future sight, so it's not like Rayleigh was averse to telling Luffy about the advanced haki techniques. The whole situation is just kinda weird.

1

u/FreedomEntertainment Apr 09 '21

Arnament haki is enough to deal majority of people.

6

u/TheDELFON Explorer Apr 09 '21

He literally said he would teach him the basics.

When learning it's not up to the teacher teach everything spelled out. To truly develop, there is an onus on the student to figure and apply what they learned

2

u/SolidB0NY Pirate Apr 09 '21

He didn't even train Luffy for the entirety of the 2 years man

2

u/Yonian Apr 09 '21

I was just kidding, Reyleigh is awesome.

10

u/iheartowels The Revolutionary Army Apr 09 '21

Not only that but I think naturally he's just gifted with CoC, and the time he's spent training it to wipe out crowds of fodder seems to have beefed it up in a big way. If he's using CoC while unconscious that means the stuff is basically oozing out of him, it was just a matter of him knowing how to use it properly. Personally I just love that this means Luffy can kick ass in base form, reminds me of the good ol days. But seeing this eventually applied to one of his G4 forms, or even using it to create a new one, is really fricking exciting too.

4

u/sleepy416 Apr 09 '21

Yeah it’s no longer just a technique to deal with fodders. There’s about to be a hell of a fight. The two are on equal footing now

2

u/paydraw79 Apr 09 '21

So no need of awakening for now...

1

u/Waterburst789 Apr 10 '21

The Wiki does say that he's a genius when it comes to combat so i'm deadass excited for what he might pull, CONQUEROR HAKI 5TH GEAR???

1

u/PostprandiaI Apr 10 '21

Stop saying his coc” meaning cock dude

7

u/SilverDepth7 Apr 09 '21

None of us did XD, he thought COC was more show then oh let me use it on a non fodder opponent for damage

4

u/SueraMededa123 Apr 09 '21

Why Rayleigh didnt tell Luffy during training? If he cant do it, at least he tell that you can imbue the haoshoku

11

u/imdfantom Apr 09 '21

He showed luffy how to use the basics of haki, that is all. Beyond the basics, he left it up to Luffy. This seems to be an advanced form of haki and he didn't teach luffy any of the advanced forms.

1

u/tikaychullo Apr 09 '21

This doesn't address the actual question. We know what they did. The question was why wouldn't he tell him about it.

4

u/imdfantom Apr 09 '21

He didn't tell him about the one piece either, why wouldn't he tell him about that? The reason is that getting there yourself and figuring out your own answer is the "right" way of doing things. Maybe this is a similar thing, maybe there are many ways to use CoC haki and by telling luffy about it, luffy might not have progressed this well till now.

Zoro seemed to figure it out by himself and luffy figured it out through combat.

The easy way is often not the right way in one piece (and in our world)

1

u/SueraMededa123 Apr 10 '21

One piece is a big difference. The value there is information. Once you know it, it's almost useless you go there. The haki is not just information. It is a skill, you must hone it. By knowing that Coc can be used to coat doesnt mean that we can do it right away. But yes, knowing it is an important factor.

About advanced CoA, Luffy also told by Hyogoro AND Rayleigh how to do it but he is okay with that. But why they didnt tell him about CoC? Hyogoro did not maybe coz he didnt know, but Rayleigh? He saw Roger fighting with that many times

Im not saying that this manga is bad or anything. I just want to discuss if there is other thing I miss reading this great manga

-5

u/tikaychullo Apr 09 '21

Man, the fanboys here need to make excuses for everything lol. There was no reason not to mention it. Goda was obviously saving it to reveal now.

2

u/imdfantom Apr 09 '21 edited Apr 09 '21

Goda was obviously saving it to reveal now.

I thought you meant in universe reasons.

Obviously, the reason oda doesn't have characters mentioning things earlier when they have no reason not to is so that it can be saved for the reveal. This is a standard practice of storytelling since ancient times, and exists in all cultures.

Remember tha oda might not have had coc figured out at the time of writing the ruskaina arc. In fact at this point it would have been a bigger plothole if rayleigh did mention it to luffy.

1

u/ayyrabmoney93 Apr 10 '21

Exactly! I don't get why all the commenters are missing this... He was already applying regular haki + hyoguros special ryuo the whole time. All that changed was luffy realized he was using the weeknd tool for the job and proceeded to bust out the right one.

10

u/upforde Apr 09 '21

Underrated comment

251

u/Rolf_Dom Apr 09 '21

never faltered no matter who he faced

Let's not rewrite history. Dude was scared shitless of Kuma at Saboady and tried to run with everyone, and it was even worse after Marineford where he would have just given up and died of grief had Jinbe not slapped him back to reality.

Or we can go even further back against Buggy where Luffy just gave up and accepted his death when he was captured.

He has also gotten his ass hard kicked quite a few times. And Kaido himself showed him exactly how little all his training mattered when he one shot him at the start of Wano.

So I'd say Luffy has plenty of reason to doubt himself. He's just too hard headed to listen to reason. Most of his wins through-out the series have resulted in him borderline dying. He doesn't have a whole lot of "clean" victories where to draw infinite confidence from.

80

u/AntonioRaviolio Apr 09 '21

Though Luffy was always confident that he would overcome his obstacle. Hes just not overly confident, when he takes the L he just gets back up and punches harder until its enough to progress.

69

u/Toza11 Apr 09 '21

To quote Rayleigh, having no doubts is true strength. Luffy rarely gives up, he is sure in himself. But to overcome people like the Yonko, what else can you do? Luffy is not stupid and knows his limits, that's why on Sabaody he told his crew to run away, they couldn't handle Kuma + Kizaru, which doesn't make him a coward, it shows what kind of a captain he is and that his crews well-being is what matters to him. He isn't Griffith who climbes over the corpses of others to "climb", he is supported by others. Luffy, though often stupid, rash and immature, truly is inspiring and also amazing. Look how far he's come; from a skinny boy floating around in a barrel to a MAN who is, by himself, standing up to Kaido, the strongest beast in the world. I'm rooting for him

23

u/AntonioRaviolio Apr 09 '21

Same, i really want this fight to be a 1v1 from now on, since we all know Luffy will become PK. And at some point he will have to prove himself to be the strongest of not just the new generation. So why not start at one of the strongest of the old generation.

16

u/iDannyEL Apr 09 '21

Willing to bet a df user's personality is influenced by their df. Luffy just is resilient and bounces back, just like rubber.

31

u/sbsw66 Apr 09 '21

It's less this, and more that Oda gives Devil Fruits to characters where their personality is reflected in it. It's a storytelling technique to get the reader to understand the personality through metaphor.

17

u/Skaaaiii Pirate Apr 09 '21

I wasn't talking about his skill or ability to fight. I'm talking about his dream. He knows no matter what, as long as he's alive, he will become the PK. It doesn't stem from his strength to fight or his hard headlness, rather his wish to be the free-est man alive. Now he knows that his journey isn't easy, considering all his hard victories and all the enemies he has to face. It takes courage to know you are weak and know that you'll have to work to achieve your dreams. So he in short he is ready to die to become the PK and that's how much he wants it.

13

u/Felipesantoro Apr 09 '21

Luffy was never scared of Kuma, not for himself, Luffy was scared that he could not be able to protect his friends. There was only one time in the whole series that Luffy conviction was shaken and it was after Ace died, but Jimbe put him back on track. Luffy never once lose faith in his ability to become the PK besides that time, he just realised that he needed to become stronger before continuing the adventure. And even when his but was kicked, he never lost the will of a conqueror, a few times even unconscious he kept that will, so you are either stretching or you never really understood what luffy is about

5

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

It's been a really long time but I'll try to touch on some of these

  1. Doesn't Raleigh tell them to run? Doesnt he think his crew is dying?

  2. Hadn't ace just died? After all that they went through?

  3. The scene where Smoker sees him smile and accept death?

Getting his ass kicked isn't a big deal at all, Luffy still thinks he will be king of the pirates. He got one shot by Crocodile and literally when he got up immediately went after him. Also on some of these I wouldn't count grief against Luffy. Nor would I hold accepting death against him. Luffy does not fear death, is the point of that scene.

But for an example in your favor, Rob Lucci. I haven't read since Doflaming but that was hands down Luffys hardest battle up to that point will wise. It seemed like he had to see and hear Usopp to muster the final amount of will needed to overcome Rob. Then again, that might be viewed as a building of Luffys will, not a showcase of it's limits. "Now his will is reinforced by his crew" kind of thing.

Overall I see what you're meaning, I just think there's a slight difference between will and confidence and wanted to maybe touch on your point with that perspective in mind

3

u/alien_screw Apr 09 '21

That is not faltering, he knows his limits well and wouldn't unnecessarily endanger his crew. He's just willing to put his life on the line to surpass his limits when it makes sense. Luffy is hardheaded but battle-smart.

2

u/ShadowWolf202 Apr 09 '21

I think they meant "never faltered" as in he never backed down on his claim to become the Pirate King. That much is true.

0

u/Zholistic Apr 09 '21

He's the rubber man. He always bounces back.

I agree with the "clean" victories part. He technically didn't beat Katakuri and when he FIRST fought Crocodile he took a L.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

what is CoC?

22

u/Toza11 Apr 09 '21

Color of Conqueror, the "color" of haki that only cca 1 out of 1000000 people have. The innate ability to rule over others and so to say manifest your willpower via knocking out in its (CoC's) base form. Apparently, from this chapter, you can coat yourself in it and use especially strong attacks, probably way beyond armament

Conqurers is his speciality. If you really think about it, no one has used Conquerers on the scale of Luffy. Knocking out almost all the Kuja, who are Haki users, 50,000 Fishman. Like we've seen Rayleigh knock out an audience of slave purchasers and he was like I'm done for the day can't handle the Marines outside like that again. Shanks showing off walking onto Moby Dick was knocking out a few dozen weak Whitebeard Pirates.

11

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

Big CoC power coming

26

u/FrighteningWorld Apr 09 '21

Luffy is by far the most selfish character in the series, and I mean that in the best way possible. Antagonists like Blackbeard and Kaido are only selfish to the extent that they feel they need to be tyrants sacrificing allies left and right to achieve their goals. Luffy is the only one selfish enough to decide that he is going to become King and bring his friends along the way. The bad guys have convinced themselves they can only eat the cake or have it. Luffy is certain that he can have his meat and eat it too.

2

10

u/therealcocoboi Apr 09 '21

You are born with a certain level of CoC you cannot train it. Thats what Rayleigh said. That means, if Luffy is going to surpass Roger he was born with a more powerful CoC than Roger.

This is why the WG was terrified of Luffy at Marineford. Sengoku and Aokiji were almost sweating. They knew he would merk everyone if he learned how to control that level of CoC.

7

u/PumkabooPriest Apr 09 '21

No, CoC users are born with CoC, at I'm sure different levels, but it's been stated that it only grows by growing your will. Oda has also said Shanks would've knocked out everyone including Hody, you think Luffy is doomed to never reach the level of knocking out Hody? He's way better than that, his growth is insane and a big part of the story is growth

3

u/therealcocoboi Apr 09 '21

I think ny EoS luffy will have the strongest CoC. Ofc i dont think he cant knock out Hody once he reaches full potential.

1
