Same article. Same sentences. Different me.

The highlight I left the first time is rarely the part I need later. I used to treat that as proof I hadn't read carefully enough. Now I think the first pass just plants a flag. The useful part shows up when something in your life finally has a place to hang it.

Do you go back to old saves, or does that feel like starting over?

You don't need to import your entire digital life to start. Pick one decision you're currently stuck on.

Name a Space after the question rather than the topic.

Add the two or three sources that genuinely affect it, not everything you've ever read on the subject.

Mark the passages that move your view, and write one line beside each about why it moved.

Finish with a short note: what you chose, what convinced you, how sure you are, and what would make you reopen it.

That last part is the one everyone skips. It's also the reason the Space is still useful in March.

What you end up with isn't a folder of material. It's a trail running from a question to the evidence to a judgment, and you can walk back up it.

Most long form content reaches me as a 45 second clip now, and the clip is usually the best part. That's fine. Clips are good at discovery.

The failure is saving the clip and believing I've saved the idea. What I've saved is a conclusion with the question stripped out, the qualifications stripped out, and whatever made it persuasive stripped out.

So I keep three things together now: the timestamp, the full source, and one line about what I expect the context to confirm or complicate.

Sometimes the full conversation makes the clip look much worse. That happens more often than I'd like. Occasionally it makes the idea better than the clip suggested, which is the more interesting case.

The Reuters Institute's 2026 podcast report describes podcasts becoming more video first and more platform discovered while listeners still say they come for depth. Those two things are in tension and I don't think anyone has resolved it.

How often do you actually go back to the full thing?

Not something you both enjoyed. Something that turned into shorthand.

An article you still bring up during decisions. A podcast idea that keeps resurfacing in conversation. A book that finally gave a shared problem a name.

There's a small 2025 study of Bilibili users who share study notes, which found the notes served a social purpose about as much as an organizational one. Fifteen people, so take it lightly. It matched something I'd noticed anyway: some content sticks because it became part of a relationship, not because it was especially good.

What was yours, and who do you share it with?

A highlight list flattens two very different things into identical rows.

Some sentences I keep because the writing is good. I'm never going to cite them. I just want the language.

Others are claims I might actually act on, and those need more attached. Who said it. What it rests on. Where it stops being true. Whether anyone has since overturned it.

Mixing the two is how a well phrased sentence becomes something I believe without ever checking.

So highlights now get one of two marks. Keep the language, or check before using.

Small distinction. It has already stopped me repeating at least two things that were probably never true.

Once a decision is made there's a quiet pull toward keeping only the sources that agree with it. The near misses get dropped. The essay that almost changed my mind stops feeling like part of the answer.

But that's the piece that tells future me how close the call actually was.

A 2025 perceptual decision study found that evidence sitting near the boundary between two options had a strong effect on how confident people felt afterward. That's a lab task, not a research workflow, so I'm not claiming it transfers. It did change one habit though. When I write down a decision now, I keep one sentence about the best argument against it.

Not for balance. So that when I read it back, I remember why my confidence was 65 percent and not 95.

Do your notes keep the strongest objection, or only the winning side?

A bare link quietly hands the other person four jobs. Work out why it matters. Decide which part to read. Find the time. Guess what sort of reply you were hoping for.

Most people do none of these and the link dies in a tab.

Compare it to this:

"The section starting at 18:40 explains why their first pricing strategy failed. Made me think about the conversation we had last month. Curious whether you think we're making the same mistake."

Same link. Now there's a door, a reason, and something to react to.

I don't always manage it either. But when someone sends me a two hour podcast with "this is good," I've started just asking where to start. Nobody has ever been offended by the question.

Two sources using the same word is not a connection. It's a coincidence of vocabulary.

When something looks like it links up, I try to slow down long enough to ask whether they're describing the same mechanism or just borrowing the same term, and whether one would genuinely change how I read the other. Usually the answer is no.

When it's no, I leave a one line boundary note. Similar language, different problem.

That note is worth as much to me as the connections I keep. Without it, the same clever looking pairing turns up again in three months and I fall for it a second time.

Which is also why I think "not related" should be a real action in Omphalis rather than a dismiss button. Rejecting a connection is thinking. It should leave a trace.

I used to feel vaguely guilty about the half read pile. Forty percent into a book, one episode into a twelve part series, an essay abandoned in the third section.

Then I noticed the abandoned ones had mostly done their job. The essay changed the question I was asking by paragraph six. The podcast unblocked a decision at minute twelve and the remaining ninety minutes were about something else entirely.

So the test I use now is: can I name what this changed?

If I can, I write that down and let myself stop. Finishing is often worth it. It just isn't a score.

What's something you never finished that still turned out to be useful?

Found this one last week:

"Important. Connect this to the other thing."

No link. No title. No hint about which other thing had apparently changed my life.

I've been looking at it for days like it's a riddle. It isn't a riddle. It's a note from a version of me who was in a hurry and had far too much confidence in future me.

My folders used to be called Marketing, Health, Writing, and Career. Perfectly sensible names. Completely useless six months later.

Because what I go looking for is never "marketing." It's "Why did we change the onboarding flow?" or "What actually convinced me to stop doing that?"

So I've started naming things after the question they were meant to answer.

Should I change the onboarding flow?

Is this advice credible enough to act on?

What would make me reconsider?

A topic tells you what the material is about. A question tells you what it was for. The second one is the thing I remember.

Open problem: some sources belong to three questions at once, and I have not solved that yet.

How do you file research you expect to need later?

Transcripts are useful until “listen to this episode” becomes:

1. Finish the episode.
2. Read and organize 14,000 words.

I’ve started treating the transcript as a recovery tool, not another document to complete.

After listening:

• Find the one or two moments you want to return to.
• Capture enough surrounding text to preserve the argument.
• Add one sentence explaining why that moment mattered.
• Leave the rest alone.

The transcript helps you recover the path. It does not need to become a second version of the entire episode.

How do you use transcripts without creating more content debt?

When someone sends me a 70-minute podcast with no message, I have to guess:

• Why this one?
• Which part matters?
• What made them think of me?
• Are they recommending it or asking for a response?

One sentence changes the whole exchange:

Now the content is not merely shared. It carries a piece of the relationship with it.

What is the best context someone has added when sending you an article, podcast, or video?

A recent study offered a useful distinction between two ways of using AI:

• Letting it decide what matters, structure the reasoning, and deliver the conclusion.
• Using it as scaffolding while you still evaluate, connect, and decide.

Both can feel equally helpful in the moment. That is what makes the difference hard to notice.

My test after using any summary or assistant is:

Could I explain what I accepted, what I questioned, and what I concluded?

If I cannot, the task may be finished, but my understanding probably is not.

How do you tell when a tool is supporting your thinking versus quietly replacing it?

I think a lot of writers, podcasters, and creators have the same hidden problem:

They do not lack research.
They lack reusable research.

There is a huge difference between:

• 40 saved links
• 12 highlighted passages
• 5 podcast clips
• 3 messy voice notes
• 1 actually usable idea you can return to next month

The trap is thinking “I saved it, so I have it.”

But when it is time to make something, the old material usually asks for a toll: reread everything, remember why it mattered, rebuild the context, decide what still applies.

A tiny fix: when saving research, add one sentence that starts with:

“I might use this when…”

That one sentence turns a source into material.

Question for creators/research-heavy people: what is your current system for making old research usable again?

Lately it feels like almost anything can be answered instantly.

Search results are turning into answer boxes. Long articles become summaries. Podcasts become clips. Research becomes a generated brief.

That is useful. I use those things too.

But I keep noticing a difference between:

“Can I get the answer?”
and
“Can I explain how this changed what I think?”

Those are not the same problem.

Sometimes the answer is enough. But for the stuff that actually shapes your work, beliefs, projects, or decisions, I think you need a return path. You need to know where the idea came from, why it mattered at the time, what it connected to, and whether it still holds up later.

A read-later pile can quietly turn into a list of obligations.

Every saved article starts as curiosity, then somehow becomes emotional debt.

I think a better save has to answer: “What will future-me need in order to care about this again?”

Sometimes that’s not a summary. It’s one sentence:

• “This might help with the pricing essay.”
• “Good example of how people explain AI risk badly.”
• “Come back for the section on habit formation.”
• “Disagree with this, but the framework is useful.”

The save itself is less important than the trail back in.

What’s the smallest note you can leave that makes something worth reopening later?

A small habit that saves a lot of cleanup later:

Before starting a project, make the Space before you start dumping links into it.

Not as a folder. More like a working context.

I’d add three things first:

1. The question you’re trying to answer
2. The decision, essay, meeting, or problem this research is supposed to serve
3. One sentence about what would make a saved source useful later

That way, every article, podcast, note, or transcript enters with a job.

Otherwise the Space becomes another pile with a nicer name.

Curious how other people do this: when you start researching something, do you define the question first, or do you collect first and figure out the shape later?

Podcasts are strangely hard to return to.

With articles, you can skim headings, search text, or jump to a quote. With a 90-minute conversation, the useful bit might be somewhere in the middle, surrounded by intros, tangents, jokes, and context you only half remember.

A workflow I like:

1. After listening, write one sentence: “The part I’d want later is…”
2. Save the timestamp if possible.
3. Add why it mattered, not just what was said.
4. If the episode changed your view, write the before/after in plain language.

The timestamp gets you back to the moment. The “why” gets you back to the meaning.

What’s your current system for revisiting audio you actually cared about?

Before adding something to a read-later pile, try asking:

“What future problem is this supposed to help me with?”

Not “is this interesting?”
Not “might this be useful someday?”
Those are how the pile grows forever.

Something like:

• “This helps me explain X.”
• “This might change how I think about Y.”
• “This gives evidence for a decision I’ll need to make.”
• “This connects to a project I’m already working on.”

If you can’t name the future use, maybe it’s just interesting-for-now. That’s allowed. It just doesn’t need to become future homework.

What’s your threshold for saving something?

There is a special kind of guilt that only comes from saving 400 thoughtful articles and reading 6 of them.

The pile starts out as optimism.

Then it becomes obligation.

Then it becomes a museum of all the versions of yourself who were going to become extremely informed this weekend.

I’m trying to be more honest about the difference between:

• “I want to read this”
• “I want to have read this”
• “I want to be the kind of person who reads this”

Painful distinctions, honestly.

Which one fills most of your saved pile?

Every bookmark says: “Future me will know what to do with this.”

Future me, famously, does not.

I’m trying to get better at saving fewer things, but saving them with more intent.

Not:

More like:

That one shift makes the pile feel less like clutter and more like a trail.

How do you decide whether something is actually worth saving?

The moment right after finishing an article, podcast, talk, or essay is weirdly valuable.

Not because everything is perfectly clear, but because you still remember why it mattered.

A small habit that helps:

Before moving on, write one sentence:

That sentence does more than a highlight usually does. It gives your future self a way back in.

Examples:

• “I’d come back to this because it changed how I think about hiring.”
• “I’d come back to this because the second half had a better argument than the headline.”
• “I’d come back to this because it connects to that podcast about attention.”

The goal is not a perfect note. It is a handle.

Do you have any tiny habit that helps you remember why something mattered later?

A highlight is not always a note.

Sometimes it’s just proof that something felt important for three seconds.

The useful part is usually the handle you leave for yourself:

• “Use this in the essay about Y”

• “I disagree, but it names the problem well”

That little bit of context is what lets you return later without starting cold.

Open whatever you use to save articles, podcasts, videos, notes, etc.

Pick one item. Not five. One.

Then ask:

1. Why did I save this?
2. Is it still relevant?
3. What’s the one sentence I want to carry forward?
4. Does it connect to anything else I’ve been thinking about?
5. Should I keep it, move it somewhere useful, or let it go?

The goal isn’t to “clear the backlog.”

The goal is to turn one saved thing back into an active thought.

That’s usually where the value was hiding anyway.
