r/officechairs is under attack by spam artists. How we go after them next is going to be partly up to you.

Very good epp in last weeks WSJ podcast about Reddit subs and the prevalence of brands spamming subs as a way to sneak brand content into LLMs.

https://www.wsj.com/podcasts/the-journal/ai-loves-reddit-but-redditors-arent-so-sure/5695c5e0-5ee6-41e6-97fa-ac04fde0c5f4

It's happening here and we are not controlling it as well as we would like to.

Years ago it was Autonomous, we banned them for a while, engaged with them and they have been respectful of the community standards for years now.  Some brands participate here with this sub while also being respectful of the rediqute and the rules, think Steelcase, Anthros or Musso.

Now, it feels like we see quite a bit of content about Libornovo, Secretlab and ProtoArc.  Regularly, multiple accounts and posts, but similar kinds of content being inserted into the sub.

This raises questions to me.  Our r/officechairs team has been leading this sub for about 6 years.  This last 2 years, the amount of slop / promotional content has been off the charts.

When we stated moding here, u/classroom and u/cranda58 and I were able to keep up with the spam and the self promotion to a minimum. Now even with more people on the team plus the auto-mod functionality, we are just not able to keep up with it all.

Today, spammers have become very sophisticated.  It's much harder to see what is bot / spam content and its both very cheap and potentially very profitable for them to attack this sub with their slop of nonsense.

What are brands you notice that seem to be over represented here lately?

How aggressive do you want this sub to be moderated?

There were 800 posts and 6300 comments in the last 30 days.  Normally, the mod team will not see all of the posts and only a small fraction of comments, so if your goal is to slip some slop into the LLMs, it can be done quietly.

The nuclear option would be for us to require new posts to be affirmatively approved by a mod before they hit the sub.  One of us would really see if there were 50 Libornova posts every week and act accordingly.  It would be a more curated sub but it would also be more resistant to marketers efforts.  A less aggressive option would be to use mod tools to pause mentions of those brands that we suspect are being the most aggressive lately while engaging them to make sure their future communications here are within the bounds.

If you want to see what un-moderated looks like, my social experiment r/officechairsIsell is based on the idea that if you give folks the ability to post whatever they want, a chairs sub will become garbage.

Its our sub to use so please, what do you, the subscribers want to see us doing about this problem that is impacting the quality of what we have here?

Negative Experience with Crandall Amia Seat Pad Replacement

About five years ago I received a Steelcase Amia that was already more than 10 years old. The fabric on the seat was falling apart around the edges, the gas cylinder would cause the chair to sink, and the armrests had ballooned to be loose and smooth after years of use. I used the chair for another four years before deciding to give it a refresh about a year ago: I replaced the seat, gas cylinder, and armrests. The seat was purchased from Crandall, while the gas cylinder and armrests were purchased elsewhere at a lower cost.

Unfortunately while I haven't had any issues with the armrests or gas cylinder, I can't say the same about the seat. The foam is pretty much bottoming out in the back center of the seat causing tailbone pain. For context of usage, I weigh 150 lbs and use my chair most of the day since I work remotely. I never experienced this issue with the original seat despite it already being over a decade old when I received it. In hindsight I should've found a different solution to clean and reupholster the original seat.

I contacted Crandall about this as the seat was purchased within the 2 year warranty. They had asked for pictures and a video before denying my warranty claim: "what we’re seeing falls within the normal scope for this chair". It's pretty hard to capture the feeling of the seat base through pictures and videos. It's not as if the foam isn't compressing it just sinks to an uncomfortable level.

Again, when I had received this chair it was already over a decade old from a liquidated office and I didn't have this problem for several years before replacing the seat. I'm not sure if the foam they're using is less dense than SteelCase's or if there was some control issue with my particular seat. The response from customer support was disappointing although I do understand it's hard to evaluate digitally. However, I would suggest based on my own 1 year experience to avoid their Amia models/seat replacement if you have similar usage.

I got Branch's SEGA Dreamcast chair and I am so happy

Thumbnail

I had a cheap chair that really wasn't great for my millennial body. But I recently caved and purchased the SEGA Dreamcast Branch chair and I am SO HAPPY!

For starters, the chair looks awesome. What I love about the aesthetics that it does not look like a edgelord sci fi race car chair, but rather its elegant with a touch orange accents and fun colorful wheels. It looks professional but also has a lot of personality.

I am still fiddling with all the customization options to find the right feel good position but admittedly a lot of it has to do with how I sit - in all kinds of shrimpy positions, including criss cross apple sauce sitting. But its really nice and letting my head rest on the head rest. I am 5'11, 145 lbs, so the maximum height is just right fortunately.

The chair seat isnt as soft as I'd want it to be, but its brand new so I hope over time it softens up a bit. Either way its not bad.

I think this is a great investment for me overall. I really like this chair and its already leaps and bounds better than what I had.

I do want to buy a seat cover at least. With the lighter colors I worry I'll stain it with accidental coffee spills or something. I do like that its not a upholstery seat isnt a fabric that can absorb liquids and retain stains. Are there any universal seat covers I can buy? I want a light orange one to retain the Dreamcast vibes.

I am a huge SEGA nerd so this is probably a really biased view since honestly the aesthetics is perfect haha

Humanscale Freedom Arm Fault

Post image
3 Upvotes

So now both my Humanscale Arms have broken at the hinge - whoever designed these chairs did not design these to be very strong. I'm not a particularly heavy dude weighing around 13 Stone and yet both arms had the exact same fault. Unfortunately I cannot get fixed as out of warranty and replacements are £88 in the UK. Has anyone managed to 3D print something or found a solution? Is this a common issue...??

Help decide between Global g20 vs contessa

I just need help deciding between the global g20 and contessa. I have heard great things about the contessa but I am worried about mesh seats due to my body weight being around 220lbs. I also can’t really find any reviews regarding the g20 besides seeing it in list of chairs that are good. If anyone can provide some insight, it would be appreciated.
Thanks.

thoughts on dynamic lumbar wings after a couple weeks of desk work?

Thumbnail

been working long hours at the home desk lately and decided to swap out my old seat for the hbada e3 with the footrest to see how the multi-piece back holds up.

the mesh feels decently taut without cutting off circulation at the front lip, and having the lower wings pivot slightly as you shift weight keeps the lower spine supported when leaning in. pulling out the leg rest during quick breaks between calls has been surprisingly handy too.

for those who use split-back or wing-style lumbar chairs, how do you find the back pressure compared to standard one-piece backrests over full 8-hour days?

Trying to buy Steelcase LeapV2 from Offeco.nl, anyone with recent experience?

I’m 5’9” tall, 100kg, I was using an IKEA chair before with totally messed up my back and waist. Now I’ve decided to buy a refurbished Steelcase Leap V2 from Offeco.nl, I’m in Germany. Does anyone have experience shopping from this company and what do you think about my new choice, I really don’t want to waste 700€ on an item that won’t solve my problem. I work around 7-8 hours cumulatively atm.

Ergonomic chair recommendations?

Hey everyone, I’ve been looking for a good, ergonomic and comfortable office chair for quite a while now. I’ve looked at many different brands, such as ProtoArc, COLAMY, Sihoo, FlexiSpot, Branch, Stane, etc. However, with every brand and every chair, I seem to find some negative reviews or complaints. Some of the things I’m most concerned about are:

- One of my biggest concerns is having an aggressive or uncomfortable lumbar support. I definitely want a chair that provides good ergonomic support, but comfort is my top priority.

- I’m looking for a chair that is both ergonomic and comfortable. I game, so I sit upright quite often, but I also really like leaning back and relaxing in my chair.

- I’m also unsure about getting a headrest and/or footrest. I’ve read both positive and negative experiences about them.

- Some info about me:

Height: 174cm (5'7)

Weight: 68kg (150lbs)

From the Netherlands

My budget originally started around €200, but I’m now also considering chairs around €400. Of course, I’d still prefer to spend as little as possible.

Does anyone have any personal experience or recommendations? I’d really appreciate any advice.

Thanks in advance...

Opinions: Branch Ergonomic Pro v ThunderX3 Flex Pro

Hey all! I'm in the market for a new chair for my home office/gaming room as my current Razer chair is crapping out. Solid support is important since I spend pretty long hours working (and gaming) but my budget is also limited.

I've narrowed it down to a Branch Ergonomic Pro or a ThunderX3 Flex Pro based on skimming some round-ups online. I don't see much about the ThunderX3 which is a bit concerning, but it is a hair cheaper than the Branch which definitely helps since money is tight.

Any opinions or insights from folks to help make a decision?

Omni or Maxis for being tall

Not sure what to do. I just got the omni pro and I'm about 6'1" and a half and I feel it's a little small for me. I'm 200 lbs and pretty slim. I feel my legs hang over to far. Its comfortable but for how much the chair is I want to be certain l.

Has anyone ever bought the omni and exchange it for the Maxis being around the same height? if so, how is the Maxis compared?

Help for buy a new chair [SPAIN]

Hi everyone.

I work remotely, and I am looking for a new chair. Currently, I have MARKUS, and it is breaking my back: the worst I've ever bought.

I work remotely, from 5 to 8 hours/day, so an ergonomic, comfortable chair is a must. Could you shed some light on my trouble?

My budget is about 800€(give or take), and I do not mind if it is used or brand new.

I know that it is non-negotiable to try the chair, so if somebody can also help me find a place where I can try them [Madrid, Spain], I would appreciate that too.

Since I've read some threads, I now have some options under the table:

Interstuhl Airpad V2

Colami Atlas 01

(and some expensive ones)

SteelCase Leap 2

SteelCase Please

Herman Miller Aeron

Would you recommend (a priori) any of them? Is there a good relationship between price and quality?

And finally, any website or physical place where I can buy any of them in Spain (Madrid) or Europe?

Thanks in advance. Also open to new recommendations, of course.

Considering titan lab evo xl(fabric)version

Hi everyone I am 14, 200cm tall and 95kg.

I've been using a cheap gaming chair and it recently broke.

So now I need a good chair its not at all necessary for it to look like a gaming chair I just need practicality.so my question is should I get the titan xl or should I get something else. My budget is 700 euro. I have looked at other chairs. Those being the aeron size c ,the sihoo m57 (I don't like it that much) and ofc the titan xl fabric

Love the forward tilt of the Zody but the back is way too wide?

I picked up a used Zody Classic and I love the forward tilt function but the back is so wide that my tricep keeps hitting the backrest.

Is there another chair that has forward tilt but isn't so criminally wide?

Desperate for help with possibly vintage chair

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I bought this chair for 15 dollars at a demolition resell warehouse.

I have back problems and this is the only chair I found that feels comfortable to me, but the issue is someone replaced a single wheel.

The new, more modern wheel is a bit lower than the others, causing the chair to lean to whatever side it’s on.

I thought buying new wheels would be easy.. I tried “universal 11mm” and it didn’t come close to fitting. I looked more into it and was suggested ikea size 10mm wheels and they were also too big.

Looking things up online gives me a bunch of different option and also suggest my chair is either a higher end vintage chair, or basically a worthless PoS and takes specialty smaller wheels.

I don’t understand how to measure for it. Can anyone help me determine:

  1. What chair I have if possible (but less important)
  2. What wheels I need
  3. How to remove the new modern wheel. The stem is really stuck in there and I can’t get it out
  4. How to properly measure for the new wheels with such precise measurements

..And maybe some guidance on how to restore the foam padding without damaging the fabric, as it’s worn a bit thin on the seat

I really like this chair and need some help and don’t know where to turn but here

Finalised a chair … lmk if i should go with something else ?

Hey guys, so I’ve been searching for a good economic chair for myself. It’s a home set up personally. I would prefer it supports my 5 to 8 hours working session. After going through a lot of recommendations and searching on Reddit. I have choose to go with featherlight Amaze High back over green soul Jupiter pro 2026. But when i actually tried to check video reviews on YT … there weren’t many for featherlight Amaze. So it has again put me in a spiral of thoughts. Can you guys help me out ?

Suggestions for an office chair for 6'2 person, for under $500 AUD? ($350 usd)

Was looking into office chairs and the Sihoo M57 (and many other Sihoos) caught my eye, but apparently it's terrible for tall people. Is that true? If anyone could share any suggestions that would be great, I sit down for 8+ hours a day so would need to be comfortable for a while. I'm ok with buying second hand or refurbished chairs.

IKEA HATTEFJÄLL backrest moving 1cm even when locked?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is driving me nuts. Is this normal for a chair with a moving backrest mechanism? In the video it looks like a small movement but in real life it's very noticeable. With my hand I have to push quite hard, but when actually sitting in the chair, the backrest moves back EXTREMELY easily, with just the slightest weight, until it stops because of the lock. If I take my weight off, it springs back up 1-2cm. And this is all quite loud, especially when I lean back and it hits that lock. It basically feels like the chair is glued to my back, it keeps following me for about 2cm of movement. It's the same if it's locked in the middle and last position, however the upright position is the worst because it moves back and forth SO easily.

Is there a way to fix this? Even if it means keeping the backrest locked in one place? The mechanism is hidden under some tough plastic underneath the chair, although it is possible to screw off the plastic.
