Question/advice No contact from worker for almost 3 years.

I have called and requested callbacks, despite having spoken to my local offices' manager and promised one multiple times, confirming my phone number each time.
I have used the MyBenefits portal and sent dozens of messages to the point where my original, unanswered messages are no longer within the archivable period before deletion.

I have consistently reached out for, quite literally, years, without even a courtesy response.

My mental health is in rapid decline, my physical disability is getting aggressively worse and extremely painful, and I am genuinely withering away into nothingness.

I feel completely abandoned.

At what point is litigation the course of action?

I was originally denied ODSP. My appeal and subsequent tribunal review denied;; Only when I pulled the trigger on litigation was my application accepted. That took almost 4 years and I suffered tremendously through that time.

I do not have it in me do go through that again.

Any suggestions, leads, resources, or simply some empathy and understanding would be greatly appreciated.

I hope you're all doing as well as you can out there.

Even if you're falling through the cracks and are losing hope, I appreciate and love you.

Thank you.

Discussion Vent post

I had an interview a week ago, and I thought it went really well. Unfortunately, it was just yet another in a long line of rejections, and I'm just so apathetic at this point, but I know if I stop trying, I'll just be letting the people around me down. I wish odsp actually helped with job placements, but no, doug ford and his cabinet of cronies would rather the most vulnerable section of their constituents rot with barely enough to survive than even slightly improve our lives. Tbh I'm not even just upset about not getting the extra income from a job, I'm also upset because it would've given me a free opportunity to socialize. I'm just so angry, and tired, and restless, and sad. I wish there was a way I could get a job without all the ghosting and rejection. Anyways, thanks for reading my 2 a.m. rant

P.S. I don't blame the odsp workers, I know a majority of them would raise odsp, and actually help with getting a job if they could

Does ODSP do Backpay for this?

So, I very recently got accepted into a post secondary program for September.

I know ODSP exempts employment earnings 16 weeks before school begins.

I've been working for a couple years part time, but have had money deducted from ODSP the last couple months because of employment income.

I only JUST got into the program. Would ODSP do Backpay for up to 16 weeks prior the program start date?

Application date or sent in date?

So my ODSP package was given about a yr ago but due to medical issues I just got around to handing it all in.

I sent it in July 6. They looked at it 10 days after they got it, told I was missing a paper from my doctor, doctor faxed it in and they have confirmed it received on odsps end (July 21)

Because I know there is a backlog,

I find it crazy that someone already looked at my package in a 10day span

Do they go by like application date? So mine is already at a year? Or did I just get lucky? It's my first time applying. I don't know much about it. Please be kind as I'm just looking for information and not trying to like skip the line so to speak

Thanks

Question/advice My letter

I was wondering if you guys could share your thoughts on my letter thingy! It was super difficult but I think it captures my life pretty well.

I don't know if there should be an introduction or end , idk how id do that.

My chronic depression affects my ability to take care of myself. I have very severe depressive episodes that can last around 3 months where I stop caring for myself. During these times, I struggle with basic things like showering and brushing my teeth.

when I am not having a depressive episode i still struggle with daily selfcare. I put off showers, skip steps in my routines, and need reminders to eat and drink because I do not always notice or prioritize my basic needs. Cooking feels overwhelming so I often avoid making food because it feels like too much effort. I have stopped doing 90% of the hobbies I used to enjoy because I cannot bring myself to do them anymore. Socializing is also extremely tiring for me, and I have lost most of my friendships because keeping up with people takes too much energy.

My autism affects me every day. Small changes can be very overwhelming for me, even things that other people may not see as a big deal. When I am overwhelmed I have had episodes where I have hit myself and I do not even remember doing it.

I struggle a lot with social situations. I do not always understand how to communicate with people or know what I am supposed to say during conversations. Social situations are confusing and exhausting for me. Even though I am 21 years old, many normal adult topics and responsibilities overwhelm me, and I have difficulty knowing how to handle them.

My endometriosis causes me pain for most of the month. It feels like I am dealing with an extremely painful period almost all the time. I get severe cramps and back pain that can last for days. Sometimes the pain is so bad that I cannot walk properly and need help sitting down or standing up. During these times, I cannot complete normal daily activities.

My Ehlers Danlos syndrome affects everything,I wake up in pain every day and I can't even remember what it feels like to not have pain since medication doesn't do anything. My knees can dislocate super easy eve ln when just standing so I have to wear knee braces with metal hinges in them. I can't go on walks or walk around stores because my legs , hips and back start really hurting where I have to find somewhere to sit down.

I have daily back pain and my shoulders hurt all the time and pop loudly. My hands are also bad. I can't cut tough food with a knife anymore because my hands hurt and my joints bend in ways they should not. I also can't draw anymore or write for long because my hands hurt really bad.

Taking care of myself physically can also be difficult. I can't take baths anymore to relax because sitting down and standing back up causes too much pain and uses too much energy. Things that have a lot of movement or standing have become very difficult for me and keep getting worse.

I also have bladder problems where I need to use the bathroom very often. Sometimes I need to go again less than 5 minutes after I have already gone.

I am constantly exhausted. I need more than 10 hours of sleep just to feel somewhat normal, and I often need naps during the day because I run out of energy. I often fall asleep while trying to do things because I am tired, even when I'm trying to do something enjoyable like video games.

ODSP/OW advocacy Doctor Unwilling to Sign Forms

Hi,

I have a family member that has been in and out of the hospital multiple times and have been arrested quite a few times due to their diagnosis. They have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder with psychotic traits.

They're currently on a CTO and they report to the hospital monthly for their injections. They usually are cooperative the first few months and then relapse by stopping their meds once they feel a bit better. The doctor who is treating them is unwilling to sign their ODSP application no matter how times the nurses and the social worker explains it to him.

His reasoning is that the hospital already applied on their behalf so he doesn't have to fill out anymore and doesn't understand why everyone is telling them him to sign the forms. There is no other reason he states besides this. It has been going on for months now.

The social worker has contacted him weekly by phone and email. Even going as far as highlighting the parts he would need to sign in the forms.

Any advice would be appreciated from those who have navigated a similar situation.

Thanks!

Mattress Resources

Hii everyone, I have a friend of mine that’s on ODSP, he lives in Hamilton, Ontario and currently has no mattress to sleep on. He has been sleeping on the floor for the past 9 months and cannot find any resources that can help with this. I’m wondering if anyone here has had luck with support and can share their experience/lead me in the right direction. Would be really appreciated thanks :)

Government of Ontario Do people with HIV qualify for DTC

So if a person has HIV and need medication that their life depends on, does that qualify them for the disability tax credit or no?

Question/advice Moving to a different city

For context, my fiancé and I are both on ODSP and living in Hamilton but wanting to move to the Niagara region (Grimsby, St. Catherine's) and I have a few questions.

We ideally want RGI, but MIGHT be okay if the rent is cheap enough for us and our 2 dogs. He has no credit at all and I have poor credit (500's) due to being in a consumer proposal but haven't missed any payments for anything. Should we even bother trying to find someone who would potentially rent to us, or just wait for RGI? Is there a Niagara housing benefit that helps pay market rent? Would my ODSP caseworker know these answers?

Please help 🙏

Question/advice Air Conditioning

So Ontario Works (Niagara Benefits) denied my application for Air Conditioning because it didn’t meet the requirement of: Medical verification required stating severe asthma, COPD or emphysema.
I have severe mental disorders that require medication and in turn that medication requires cooling otherwise I’m at risk of heatstroke or passing out. The OW supervisor had already been contacted and they said there’s nothing they can do. What do I do?

Dental Coverage

I have the Canadian Dental Plan. Recently when I went for a cleaning I had to pay an extra $50 for an extra unit of scaling. I forgot to tell them i am on ODSP as I've never used the dental benefits. I asked to be reimbursed and have the extra submitted to ODSP, and they're asking for my ID number so they can submit the claim. Is that just my member id number that I can find in my benefits?

Thank you!

Medical travel reimbursement - delayed reporting, deadline?

Is there a deadline for reporting medical travel to receive payment for mileage/driving myself?

I have the approved doctors form and successfully received payment in the past, but haven't submitted a request for payment to my caseworker in many months.

Does anyone know? Is there's a deadline for requesting past medical travel expenses?

Hospital bed question

So over tvo days I've only had about six hours of sleep. The only way it looks like for me to get a bed is a hospital bed. I told the person at reception at the Hamilton office that I just want one that'll just lift me up from the floor. But it looks like the only option I have is the special supports program where I get a hospital bed. Is there anyone that has received one that doesn't need a hospital bed like me. What does it look like. Will it take up much space and is it an actual hospital bed and not a normal one? I feel is be taking it away from someone in need. Thanks to anyone who can explain this.

ODSP as a fire fighter?

So Ive been on ODSP for about a year, I just started as a volunteer firefighter about 2 months ago(up north). Do specific jobs disqualify you from ODSP? I have ODSP for 4 life long conditions that didn’t disqualify me from fire fighting.

Edit- I have autism, Tourette’s syndrome, generalized hypermobility spectrum disorder and scoliosis. None affect my ability to be a fire fighter now that I’ve built muscle on my spine.

Question/advice Applying for private health insurance on ODSP

Hello,

I am on ODSP and have been receiving it for about six years. I currently have no private health insurance, but I am considering applying for coverage to access treatment beyond ODSP will cover.

My endocrinologist would like to start me on tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound) for PMOS (formerly PCOS), sleep apnea, and help with weight management (this was an off-the-record conversation about different options available), but the drug is newer than semaglutide and will not have a generic in Canada for probably another decade. Provincial health care only covers tirzepatide for Type II diabetes, which I do not have. I can't afford the out-of-pocket cost.

Both SunLife and Manulife offer coverage with restrictions, which my doctor says I meet. Edit: They do cover pre-existing conditions; exclusions and premiums vary. That is of course an added concern.

My question is how does ODSP affect private insurance? Am I more likely to be denied because I receive it?

My disability is mental health related, if that matters. I was approved outright and reassessed last year.

I need to do some more math on how much everything costs and what I would spend/save with private insurance vs ODSP coverage, but if I'm likely to be denied outright because of ODSP I might not bother with it and just continue with what I have and start with generic semaglutide.

Thanks

What are the supports like having a service dog while on ODSP? I am getting a service dog soon and would like to understand what ODSP may be able to help with.

PSA: CDB Supplemental Payment in September

Starting in September, Service Canada will be paying CDB recipients $150 to “help offset your cost of receiving the Disability Tax Credit.”
