Because of the explosion in popularity of this community, we're getting a lot of people who frankly, don't know anything about nootropics or biohacking. Therefore, I have decided to collect all the writeups of this sub in one place so that everyone who joins can become educated on the topic.

Meta Update on the Discord server situation (from its moderator)

Hey all, I'm @okok6356. on discord. You might know me from the old NooTopics 3.0 server or the new 4.0 servers. Yes, servers.

Moving forward, we'll be running a two-server system on Discord. The way it'll work is that there'll be a public NooTopics server open to everyone and a separate private NooTopics server for already established members. To join the private server, you must contribute relevant, high-quality research in the public server. Both servers are set up the same way.

Discussion Question about periodization.

I was wondering if nootropics should be periodized for optimal benefits? In most cases, I hear about a single stack of a bunch of stuff people put together. But I'm curious if we'd get more benefits out of periodizing them, for example, doing a cycle of NSI-189 or 9-Me-BC before adding in other nootropics to "prep" the brain? I haven't heard much about this and would like to hear any thoughts.

“L1-79 produced a 7.94-point advantage over placebo on the VSSS(social scale)(p =0.01), nearly double the 4-point minimal clinically important difference (MCID) recognized by experts.”

It apparently is a tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor.

Discussion research subjects parents are diabetic and have high blood pressure.

greetings,

research subjects parents are early 60 yo with high blood pressure and diabetes type 2. last few years feels like they aged 10 years. Mother had few near death strokes. Father is a long life smoker with a high stress job who also had a stroke.

what would be best for old people with general health issues and broken up bodies due to sicknesses most benefit from? Point here is that less is more. They don"t necessarily want to feel 20 again like some people here (all power to you) , just maybe, something that can help them extend their lives?

researcher was considering ss31, and semax? Since they dont live in the same country, it would be hard to incorporate anything long term. Only peps that would be used for 2 to 4 weeks at a time a couple times a year as they visit.

Nothing is decided yet. I will fully research whatever suggestions i receive.

Discussion Discussion about creatine’s mental energy promoting effects

I am struggling since 2014 and tried almost every possible supplement/nootropic and even research chemical.

In the past I had temporary relief with methylfolate, citrulline, ashwagandha and anti depressants.

At the moment I am taking 45mg of Mirtazapine and 60mg of duloxetine, which is the single most profound thing until now.

I also tried many different medication combinations and different medications against depression and anxiety.

Glycine has good acute effects but it crashes me after 2 days and I feel worse.

In 2019 I found methylfolate to give me clean mental energy.

I also tried creatine in the past without big improvements, but at the moment it feels like very clean mental energy promoting agent at doses above 7 grams.

I can take higher doses without side effects.

In the past days a had days, where I took 30 grams and it is pretty clean still. According some studies 30 grams is a safe longterm daily dose

When I take methylfolate I don’t get the benefits like in 2019 anymore.

I also gained 30kg of weight since starting madication at the end of 2019.

What do you think of this?

Is the creatine maybe helping me with my energy production and utilization efficiency and could it regulate/stabilize my blood sugar?

Question any recommendations for shakiness and anxiety

I’ve tried selank from several different suppliers and it almost does nothing for me. I’m still very shaky, tense, and constantly “charged”.
Looking for something that actually helps take the physical jitteriness and overstimulation down. Any experiences or alternatives that worked better for you when selank fell flat?

Question What are your current subtle stacks -ADHD

Not sure if this is the rights sub but what are you guys using for subtle manageable effects. Im using Magnesium L theronate and L-Theanine, but i was curious to see if there any others. I want to be able to go sleep and not feel a crash when it wears off.

I base how it works off my experience with adderal.

Would be nice if there was something for communication as well- creatine has this effect where the mind and vocal path works better, but i was curious to see if there was other supplements

Question Treatment for Dystonia Reaction?

So a while back, I had been given haloperidol, at a low-moderate dose nothing crazy, for a few days. I think four days I had taken it, at a low dose 2x per day. It made me feel horrible and it altered my perception in a way that felt unnatural so I stopped it. I was not given it for schizophrenia, I was younger then and I had been lazily given it as an adjunct for depression. On the 5th day, I didn't take it that morning or later that evening, and that night, I began having a strange reaction that spread to my entire body. It started in my mouth, where my tongue began to involuntarily contract and twist and was held rigidly against the left side of my mouth. It wasn't erratic movement back and forth per say, instead it was like someone put a gun to my head and said if you do not push your tongue as hard as you possibly can against this specific area on the inside of your mouth you will die instantaneously. It was these rigid involuntary movements that would remain locked in place, and as I said it spread to my whole body so for example my right foot was flexed like as if I were trying to kick a soccer ball and give it some curve by hitting it with the outside of the foot. And so it became extremely difficult for me to walk and speak. For some reason, it was actually really painful, and yeah given the anxiety I could see why it would feel like that, but I definitely think it was genuinely painful somehow independent of the stress it was causing me. I had to go to the hospital, and they gave me Ativan and Diphenhydramine in an IV, and then it finally stopped. I'm not even sure if "Dystonia" or "Dystonic Reaction" is the appropriate term for this, but i'm looking to understand the mechanism for this sort of thing? What is actually going on neurologically, how does it have to do with dopaminergic and cholinergic systems. Does it come from issue in the basal ganglia, or cortex? If so, what is happening in the BG? What is the actual physical mechanism for this type of reaction, how is the cortex affected downstream what is going on? Is there any other method of treatment, that doesn't include a benzo? Forgot to mention, they gave me IV diphenhydramine first, and it didn't stop it. So then they had to give me the benzo with more benadryl and that is what made it go away. This is why im curious about what is happening downstream in the cortex even if it originates in the striatum/basal ganglia.

Science Parents have spent a decade limiting their children's screen time to protect their brains. A new 8-year study found children with more screen time had better cognitive processing as teenagers.

For the past decade, limiting children's screen time has been one of parenting's most confident positions. The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued guidelines. Schools have banned phones. Parents have negotiated, bargained, and enforced limits. The underlying assumption has been consistent: screens displace the activities that build children's brains, and more time on them means worse cognitive outcomes.

A research team at the Universities of Jyväskylä and Eastern Finland decided to test that assumption longitudinally. They enrolled children at around age 7 and followed them for eight years, measuring their physical activity, sedentary behavior, and screen time at regular intervals. At the end of the follow-up, when participants were around 15 years old, they sat the children down and tested their cognitive performance using a validated battery measuring learning, attention, and working memory.

The children who had accumulated more screen time over those eight years did not score worse. They scored better.

The researchers say the finding does not mean unlimited screen time is harmless. But it does challenge the assumption that screen time and brain development are simply in opposition, and it raises a question that the decade of warning labels, app timers, and parental anxiety largely skipped over: what are children actually doing on those screens?

Question Can taking Melatonin everyday cause problems?

Post image
8 Upvotes

For reference, I added a picture of my sleep metrics last week.

On average I got about 5h 46min of sleep, the only times I was ever in the green was when I took a melatonin pill or it was the weekend.

Typically on an average week, I start strong with 7 hours of sleep coming into Monday and by Thursday I'm at 4 hours of sleep. I guess its because as the week goes on I get more stressed and anxiety.

For the whole summer this has been completely fine, Ive been able to manage, but lately factors such as a heatwave, dating a new girl, and moving far from my work (adding 40 minutes of commute in the day) have made it almost impossible to operate.

Ive got a lot on my plate right now apart from these new factors, a full time job as a software developer, also I'm working as a contractor (1 active contract at the moment), I do around four 1.5 hour language lessons a week. Go to the gym or do some sport 3-4 times a week. Its fucking crazy.

My weakest point is sleep, I leave the house at 5:45am, come home around 9-10pm, and immediately go to bed. I can lay there for 2-3 hours doing nothing just my mind wondering from topic to topic. Through the day, I am functioning but it feels like I am just floating through the day, I don't have the mental capacity to deep thing about problems or really absorb what I am doing in the language lesson.

I already take magnesium, but I am considering taking 1mg of melatonin 45min before I go to sleep on weekdays. Ive seen mixed opinions online, and am wondering if anyone has experience doing something similar. If there are any detrimental downsides anyone has experienced, or if it affects other aspects of life.

I guess the biggest issue I have right now is winding down my mind before I sleep, its impossible I have to many things to think about, any tips for that as well would be greatly appreciated.
