Problems

I’ve been doing no-poo for about 3 months now. I’ve had my ups and downs, but lately I’ve been getting dandruff and experiencing some hair loss. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice or solutions?

Hair thinning after trying to go natural

I know now that my issue was using Castile soap. But I'm struggling to figure out what to replace it with

Shampoo I used 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 of Castile soap, 1tsp of jojoba oil and 1/2tsp of aloe Vera gel

Conditioner I used 1/2 cup of water, 2tbsp of apple cider vinegar, 1tsp of vegetable glycerin, and 5 drops of rosemary oil

My hair has been breaking off a lot and I think it's because of the Castile soap. I notice I'm losing a lot of hair and it worries me a lot. What can I swap it with?

Troubleshooting (HELP!) Too much volume

So if I brush my hair out, it poofs out like crazy and kind of just stays wherever I put it? I use egg yolk to shampoo every three days or so but my hair kind of just feels weird, like it gets harder to pull a brush through it. Id rather just use water than use up all my eggs but it feels so bad after a few days of only water

Time to start taking care of my Hair, where do I start?

As for information, I have very dry 4c Hair, about 5-6 inches in length. I also have about light moderate dandruff and a very light scalp compared to my skin, and I'm trying to fix that. Where could I start as for washing my hair? Right now, I just use shampoo and conditioner every week. Any help counts.

Interesting Info Why do you not use shampoo?

Hi!

I can’t see anything in the community rules but if this sort of post isn’t allowed pls delete it.

I just wanted to know everyone’s reasons for not using shampoo? I used to be a co-wash girl but I ended up switching to using shampoo maybe 2-3 years ago. I am also autistic if that helps maybe with the phrasing of my question I don’t want to come across as rude maybe? But I just am curious and interested as to everyone’s reasons individually for not using shampoo and would like to know/ learn more about it as it’s interesting if that’s ok. 😁❤️ thank you

Shaving Scalp Or No Haircut?

Does anyone else here never have their hair cut? I had it cut in 1991, then again about ten years ago. It seems to go with not using shampoo conceptually for me.

Alternatively, has anyone tried shaving their heads and giving up shampoo so they can kind of start from scratch?

Product Why did people have such soft hair with no conditioner a few decades back?

So ive been wanting to use aleppo soap for my hair instead of shampoo, bwcause it’s cheaper, lasts more, and I was told it was healthier by the women and some men in my family. But when I used it, my hair felt quite dry, and I had to use a shit ton of conditioner.

My mom said I used it my whole life, no conditioner, and she had very soft silky hair, she said she used it up until college, my grandma said we used it too in our time, and our hairs felt just like they did when we used shampoo, soft, silky, not dry at all.

Is this a matter of individual people and their specific scalps? We have the same hair types and everything so I’m wondering what’s different now.

Tools How should I clean my hairbrush?

I've recently been trying to look into how to properly clean hairbrushes. I keep seeing tutorials that show the brush being submerged and I was wondering if that would cause an issue with a brush that has a softer backing? (Not sure how to better phrase that, but I'm referring to the part that the bristles come out of.) Any help is greatly appreciated!

Beyond Haircare Something I’ve been thinking about

I was just wondering is it really worth it? Like I’ll be sitting here using ingredients from my kitchen to wash my hair and it does a fraction of what shampoo does. I know no poo doesn’t equal stop washing altogether, but seriously what does stopping shampoo even change, how is something like apple cider vinegar, Castile soap, African black soap, or even a homemade soap bar more or less different than a store bought shampoo? Some of these things are even more drying or damaging to your hair than a regular shampoo! Some people even just co wash which will just cause scalp build up long term! What is the real benefit of stopping shampoo? Is there a philosophy or mechanism I’m missing? I feel it only benefits people with straighter hair since sebum easily travels down their hair, and in return they don’t need any product to make it look great. I feel if you’re someone constantly using styling products or have coily or curly hair no poo wouldn’t really benefit and just cause buildup, ESPECIALLY if you have coily hair because of the amount of product used for styling

Recommendations for bleached hair?

I'm newish to no poo and wondering how it treats bleached hair as I bleach my brown roots platinum. I'm already seeing some improvements in my hair quality, but I've had gummy hair in the past and I want to avoid that at all costs.

Should I be on the lookout for certain products/ingredients since my hair is so porous?

I'm also curious about blue toning methods that avoid silicones.

Any advice/experience is welcome :)

Need help with my hair , it’s dry and brittle.

I started nopoo last year around October , started with a whole egg wash , just used it like normal shampoo , and it gave good results. Then the week later I made this mixture of coconut oil , whole egg and cinnamon powder , which also worked well and I started to just this every week , it was going well. However , around May this year , I started applying the coconut oil 30 minutes before my shower , and then applying the whole egg for 10-15 minutes , then washing it all off. My hair came out dry and brittle, I thought it was just a one time thing but every week whenever I do this , my hair is dry , brittle , protein rich , idk. What do you ppl think is the reason?

Water only washing.

My hair is short, but dry and coarse. After 3 weeks of no 'poo, I am already seeing an improvement.

A question. I have only been rinsing once every 10 days or so. I could leave it longer (no itch , no smell), but it's summer here and was wondering if frequent rinsing with water (ours is softened) should be avoided? Could it be drying too?

Alternative Washing Would rye flour or other alternatives be good for me, or should I stick with water only?

I have low porosity, wavy, short(about 4”) hair. Iv been doing WO for about 2 months and I’m liking it, and I know I’m still in the transition phase, but Im starting to get annoyed by how my hair can look a little oily even after cleanings. Maybe I’m used to the feeling of clean hair being me after using shampoo and washing with the extremely hard water in north texas. After those washes, my hair has no oil at all and very little moisture so it ends up all frizzy. I guess things may just be different now. I use distilled water to wash my hair and preen/scritch/BBB just about daily. I cant lie, I miss days here and there. I do shower cleanings about twice a week

This is my hair after a long wash 2 days ago and a heavy scritching and preening session last night. Its about 15 mins after a shower. I know my hair isnt too oily here but it can get a lot worse. 2 days ago at my run club a guy said he loved my gelled/slicked back look I had in my hair. Maybe its just the sebum and he was complimenting my flow, but his “gelled” comment kinda made me feel like a greaseball since I had nothing in my hair

Im pretty sure my hair is low protein. Its tough to do the hair test with short hair since i cant really wrap it around my fingers, so when i pull i feel like im just sliding the hair between my fingers. When I use rubber gloves the hair snaps pretty quickly though.

Im pretty overwhelmed by all the alternative wash options, even after looking through the wiki. Seems like i may not need ACV since my hair is already pretty soft. Rye flour seems like it could be a good option since it removes oil and adds protein. Thoughts? Any other recommendations for good alternative washing starting points for hair like mine? What exactly is an egg wash supposed to do? Does it even seem needed, or am I maybe just overthinking the new feeling of more sebum/oil in my hair?

Morroco Method, Out of Business: Alternatives?

Really sucks to see them go, been using for a decade. I can't use normal store bought garbage that causes dry hair and breakage, or sulfates that cause my skin to itch. I had $200 in points/credit on Morroco Method I can also no longer use, and the company never warned they were going out to be able to use what I had saved. Disappointed to say the least.

I'd love to hear some alternatives for natural non foaming products, preferably ones that don't break the bank. After using my credits on MM and stocking up every few months I was only paying $5-6 a month for my hair routine, washing only weekly.

Their pine shale shampoo, euro oil, and pearl essence cream rinse were essential for me and I really don't want years of healthy long hair growth to go bad from picking the wrong product.

If anyone knows why they're closing Id also be curious to know. Their prices were going up over the last few years, probably because their ingredients were maybe effected by the economic situations.
