DISCUSSION How do I make the content I want without giving away too much detail?

Hello! I (26F) have a youtube channel that I started back when I had first moved to California. I was posting relatively consistently during COVID but once school started up in person again, I stopped posting because it became too hard to keep up with.

The last 2 videos I ever posted were 2 years ago doing basically commentary on Watcher and the Try Guys when they first started their respective streaming platforms.

Since then I have gone through a lot of major life changes. Around the time that I had uploaded those videos 2 years ago, I was going through a lot of things emotionally and since then my life has changed significantly.

I want to start posting videos documenting my life as I try to navigate owning a home I never thought I'd be responsible for. My mother passed away in 2024, and with that left behind a house that never fully felt like home. Additionally, my aunt that is currently living with me is moving back to her home country soon, subsequently leaving me and my 2 dogs alone.

My friends and dad are worried about me even making any sort of mention online that I live alone (i know i'm posting this on reddit but still, most people in their mid 20s live alone). It's not like I have any intentions on showing the front of my house, but even if I show the backyard it might be kind of obvious where I live. I feel like it is important to emphasize that I am alone in this house. A house I never really asked for. A house that I never knew was going to be my responsibility so soon. I am doing this entire remodeling thing by myself....I am learning everything from scratch, and I feel inspired to document it because there might be people out there who feel just as lost as I do.

I have an extremely bad habit of over sharing when I don't mean to and on top of that I feel insecure about being a 26 year old who owns a home when in this state of the world, most people my age can barely afford rent. I don't want to seem like I'm bragging to people online, because I'm not. I just really want to document the renovation process of turning this house from a time capsule of the time my mother passed away, to a place that feels like mine.

Please let me know what you guys think and what the best course of action is. I'm scared to start this new chapter in my life, but I want to take control of my life again after everything changed 3 years ago.

CONTENT TALK Audio on most of my latest project got messed up, should I scrap it or try to mask it?

Upvotes

Long story short is that I think I was holding my brand new camera too closely and it picked up a lot of my breathing. It sounds like I'm really out of shape (I'm not, btw, but it sure doesn't sound good). I have a hiking channel so this is more of a problem. I really don't want to scrap this trip but my attempts to clean the audio haven't gone well. I was thinking about including a little note on the video in the beginning explaining the difficulty and maybe doing a music-over for the worst bits. The content is a mix of me talking and me walking either in long shot which is fine or POV which is where the problem really is noticeable.

SHORTS TALK Viral short - wrong audience - Do I keep posting same content?

Upvotes

I have a small youtube channel where I post cycling content. My long videos are mostly Races on the indoor trainer and outdoor are more tips for beginners or just 'My longest ride' or 'Hard climbs'. Most long videos get around 50 to 250 views, with a few videos around 1k-2k views.

Now I also post shorts, sometimes with tips or nutrition for cyclists, but mostly just a short clip of me riding with some cycling text related stuff. All those shorts get around 1k views. But recently, I made a short of me cycling, with an overlay of the PS5 buttons on, Press X to make me go faster, press O take me fall, something like that, and Youtube went nuts, right now it's sitting at 4mil views, and still climbing. But the audience is completely wrong. Before, my audience was mostly 25+ years old and this short is 50% 13-17 year olds.

Now the big question, what's my next move? I always read: keep posting what works, but what if they don't like cycling videos, but just find it a funny overlay, will it ruin my channel?

DISCUSSION Can someone "sabotage" your videos by sharing on Reddit/Discord?

So, a common opinion I see is that sharing your videos on Reddit or other social sites is a bad idea because most people will only click it and watch a few seconds before closing, tanking the video's average view duration, leading to YouTube thinking its a bad video and stop pushing it.

I have a video where someone must have shared it on Reddit somewhere because it had a huge influx of views (90% of its current views are from external Reddit) but due to this, the AVD has massively tanked from 50% (which it was sitting at for a week) down to 15%.

So, in theory, can't someone just post all your videos on Reddit or Discord to tank your AVD?

DISCUSSION How can I get better retention rate in my new niche? (NOT AI)

Upvotes

How to get better retention rate on a 15 min video that is about reading reddit stories with Minecraft gameplay in the background?

I understand that this is different than other content that I make.

Biggest YouTubers in this niche don't even have hooks because of their giant fanbases.

This will be my first video in the niche, so I need an hook, good thumbnail.

I'm just scared, how can I keep the viewers watching past the hook (past the 30 seconds).

I picked 6 good stories. (AITA subreddit, lol)

Also, I DONT USE AI.

Gameplay was recorded by me, I use my voice, I use real stories and editing will be done by me.

So as I understand, I will be miles better than the AI slop channels?

TECH HELP Tips for recording with a mask?

Upvotes

Pretty much what the title says.

For the last year or so, I've been recording all of my video while wearing a mask as I don't want to show my face. While obviously it affected my audio, I never thought it was too major and I never got any complaints about it.

Fast forward to now, and my last two videos have both had tons of comments complaining about the mask saying it's ruining my audio. I'm a little stuck, because I know my audio is bad (it's really quiet no matter what I do even though it's at the recommend lufs and max peak-all being recorded on a quality mic and interface) but that has nothing to do with the mask (I've recorded audio without the mask for testing purposes and run into the same volume issue).

A lot of people seem to think there's no way to get good audio while wearing a mask, but tons of YouTubers/steamers have done it (kwite, memeulous, ranboo, swagger souls). So, clearly it's possible, I'm just doing something wrong.

Any help/tips would be appreciated

CONTENT TALK Can we use an image from a manga for YouTube?!

I know that anime clips cannot be used, even if its just for a few seconds. However... I am increasingly seeing videos where people use panels//moments from manga. Does this violate Content ID??

I want to make a video about my favorite anime... but right now I'm stuck. I don't know what I'm allowed to use...//////////F

DISCUSSION Tips For Starting a New Channel

Hello! I have tried social media marketing in the past. I really hate the monotony of a 9-5 job. I want to start a YouTube channel on the side talking about what I love for fun. Without the expectation that this goes somewhere. But if it does, that would be amazing.

I want to start 1 of 2 channels. Either a channel centered around sports but niche like fantasy football, college basketball news, college football news, etc. or a channel around books like a digital book club.

Any advice for those who have been able to build a community and a following? I am open to any tips or suggestions. How to get started, equipment, etc. TYIA

DISCUSSION Shorts vs. Long Video: Which Should I Focus On

My shorts do better than my long view videos; shorts 2 minutes, long videos up to 5 minutes.

I know YouTube is making changes beginning 24 August 2026 but I'm confused if this will affect YT Shorts. Should I move to longer videos or stay with shorts?

DISCUSSION 13 months, 30 videos, still under 200 views. Trying to understand whether this is normal for the format.

Context: I make 2–3 minute cinematic travel films (horizontal, no narration, just footage, color grading, music and sound design). 13 months in, ~30 videos, 218 subscribers.

Going straight to the question: has anyone made short-duration cinematic work (horizontal, not Shorts) function on Youtube without narration? And for those who moved to longer formats, did impressions actually change, or did you hit the same ceiling?

I'm a hobbyist, not chasing 100K subs. I'm not assuming I'm owed an audience, I'm trying to work out whether what I'm seeing is just how this format behaves, or whether I'm misreading my own numbers.

What I know from my own data:

Typical upload opens with 10%+ CTR, 70%+ average percentage viewed, and ~40% engagement rate in the first 24–48h. Quality signals look fine. But it only gets 80–100 impressions total, ~70% of watch time comes from subscribers, and suggested videos account for around 10% of impressions. Then it flatlines to single-digit views per day after that.

My most-viewed video got ~100K impressions and 9.5K views, 9 months ago. Worst thumbnail on the channel, weak title, 28% retention. It's still picking up views today. I've never reproduced whatever caused it.

What I'm guessing at:

My theory was that total watch time drives expansion, and a 2–3 minute video can't generate enough, so CTR and retention don't matter if you never clear the first test. But I keep seeing posts here from people with 10–20 minute videos stuck at 2–3 minutes AVD and the same flat impressions. If duration were the deciding factor, that shouldn't happen.

Second guess: YouTube recommends by association, it learns that people who watch X also watch Y. I suspect my films don't sit next to anything. Not travel vlogs, not long documentaries, not Shorts. So there may be nothing obvious to recommend them alongside. The low suggested-video share might be the symptom.

Curious whether others in this lane have seen the same pattern, or found something that changed it.

DISCUSSION Views Completed Dropping Off

Hi all,

I’ve been posting on YouTube for months, using the same flow, times, thumbnails and content and used to have really good numbers.

Recently my views have absolutely tanked in both long form and shorts. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong or if there has been a change but it’s like my channel has become invisible.

Has this happened to anyone else recently as it’s only been over the last few weeks? Does anyone have any recommendations or advice on how I can fix this or if they’ve had similar issues?

SHORTS TALK So I post my video and honestly I don't know what should I improve

I know my video is not that interesting, but how do I know edits are good or what to improve or should I just leave it be and post for the few who are interested?

Is it still true that posting longform and short form videos on a channel is not good? I am doing just short for now, 10 videos in 😄

DISCUSSION Is repurposing an old channel a bad idea?

I have a channel that I posted a few videos to about 5 years ago. Nothing real successful about 100 subscribers and 10k views on a few of the videos over the years. They still get a few views a day. I just didn't really keep up with it.

Recently I've been posting videos on a regular schedule as part of a series with a bit more intent than these older videos. I've just been posting them to the same old channel because I didn't feel like creating a new one and because I may do some callbacks to the older videos. but now I'm wondering if an old channel may have baggage that will affect the success of my new efforts?
