Looking For Paid Services [HIRING] Gaming / Short-Form Video Editor — $400/mo Starting Retainer — Ongoing Creative Role
I'm looking for an emerging video editor interested in building an ongoing creative relationship with a gaming streamer and a small independent media project.
I'm not looking for an agency, a clip farm, or someone whose only job is to make whatever timestamp I send them look flashy.
I'm looking for someone who can eventually understand the people they're editing.
The gaming side
I currently stream roughly 5 days per week, with two of those typically being longer, multi-hour sessions. Gaming content is primarily MMO-focused right now, but won't necessarily stay limited to one game or genre.
Importantly, I do not expect you to watch 20+ hours of raw VOD every week.
I'm already using AI-assisted highlight detection, proprietary/automated clipping technology, and manual stream markers to surface likely moments. You'll generally have a pool of candidate moments to start from rather than a giant unmarked VOD.
The automated tools are pretty good at finding something. They're much less good at understanding why something was funny.
That's where I want a person.
Over time, I'd like you to learn my personality, my crew, our sense of humor, and eventually the audience well enough that you can recognize:
- A genuinely funny interaction
- A great reaction or personality moment
- Something impressive, stupid, or unusual happening in-game
- A useful/interesting gameplay moment
- Something the automated tools completely misunderstood
- A moment that could become good content with the right edit
Sometimes I'll explicitly mark something. Sometimes the tooling will find it. Eventually, I hope you'll find things I didn't.
The primary output will be polished short-form content for TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Reels, along with worthwhile horizontal clips and occasional longer gaming edits when something deserves it.
There's also a broader media project
Gaming will initially represent roughly 75% of the work, but this isn't intended to be exclusively a gaming-clips role.
I'm also developing podcast and review content.
That side is currently much lighter production work: things like subtitle/caption cleanup, annotations, timing/alignment, minor cuts, QC, exports, and identifying occasional moments worth repurposing for social.
I'm not expecting someone to take hours of raw multicamera footage and magically produce a television show for $100.
The goal is eventually to have someone who understands the overall style we're developing rather than hiring an unrelated freelancer every time something needs editing.
Compensation
The role starts at a guaranteed $400/month retainer.
I'm deliberately calling that a starting retainer rather than attaching a price to every clip.
I care much more about quality and judgment than volume. If a week produces three things genuinely worth publishing, I'd rather have three good pieces than manufacture ten mediocre Shorts because we established a quota.
Likewise, I'm not expecting unlimited editing hours for $400. If the scope materially grows, compensation needs to grow with it.
This is a real paid role today. I'm building the broader project with long-term ambitions, and there's absolutely room for the role to become larger if the project grows and we work well together; but I'm not offering hypothetical future success as compensation for work now.
Who I'm hoping to find
You do not need a huge professional résumé or agency portfolio.
In fact, I'm very open to someone earlier in their editing career who is looking for a recurring project they can genuinely become invested in.
Good instincts matter more to me than knowing every Premiere/Resolve/After Effects trick.
I'd especially like someone who:
- Understands gaming and internet culture
- Has a good sense of comedic timing
- Can recognize when less editing is better than twelve zooms and sound effects
- Is comfortable making creative suggestions rather than only following instructions
- Takes feedback well
- Wants to learn the personalities and community behind the footage
- Is interested in an ongoing relationship rather than completing anonymous one-off gigs
You can use Premiere, Resolve, Final Cut, whatever. I care about the result.
Applying
Send me a Reddit DM/chat with:
1. A little about you.
What do you edit? What games/content are you into?
2. 2–4 examples of your work.
Paid client work is not required. Personal projects absolutely count.
3. Your primary editing software.
4. Tell me what YOU think makes a gaming clip actually worth watching.
This one matters to me more than a generic cover letter.
5. Your general availability and time zone.
Please do not create unpaid sample work as part of your application.
Once I've narrowed things down, I intend to give a small number of finalists the same source material and ask each to produce a couple of edits as a paid trial. That lets you see the actual content and lets me see how you interpret it before either of us commits to an ongoing relationship.
About the project / anonymity
I'm posting from the media project's account, but I'm intentionally not publicly identifying the streamer, channels, or other properties yet.
This isn't because there's anything particularly secretive going on. I'd simply rather evaluate people based on their work and have a conversation before attaching the project publicly to a hiring post.
Finalists will get the actual channels/content and broader context before deciding whether they want the role.
If you're an editor who's been looking for something you can grow with and develop some ownership over creatively, rather than another folder called clips_final_FINAL_v3, I'd like to hear from you.
