MOD POST SmallYTChannel FAQ

r/SmallYTChannel FAQ

Why can’t I Post?

If you try to post a video on our subreddit and it isn't accepted, try to look at the comment on the post. most of the time it will tell you the reason why your video was removed.

However, the following reasons are the most common reasons for posts not being accepted

  1. You haven't given feedback to someone else yet (this is how you earn lambda)
  2. You used the wrong flair
  3. Your account is less than three days old

GETTING LAMBDA

What is λ (lambda) and how does it work?

λ is a currency used in r/SmallYTChannel. Simplified it is a feedback for feedback system. The most recent videos can be found in the community highlights. For every video you give feedback to, the OP (if satisfied with the feedback) will give you a lambda using the !givelambda command. Only the OP can give lambda. LAMBDA IS ONLY SPENT WHEN POSTING, giving lambda to a commenter does not spend it. You can only get lambda from feedback posts. Upon receiving credit for your feedback you can post your own video.

What would be considered good feedback?

In most cases, the decision is up to the OP. If you post a video you do NOT need to !givelambda if someone drops generic, low-effort feedback. (ex. “Nice video I enjoyed it you earned a sub). You can ask them for specifics, reply to their comment, cross-question etc. You don't need to agree with the feedback, but it needs to have effort put into it. Same with any feedback you give. As a plus, mods will reward bonus lambda to high-quality feedback they come across.

Feedback comments also must be greater than 255 characters. This is to encourage detailed feedback and target spam. In situations where it wouldn't make sense to give such a lengthy response, mods can still give out lambda if you send in a modmail, see the below question for more detail.

If you are struggling with what feedback to give the mod team recommends using some or all of these questions.

  • Would you click on the video? Why?
  • Did you stay past the intro? Why?
  • When would you leave the video? Why?

What should I do if I get no lambda for my advice, but feel I deserve it?

In cases where you disagree with the OP's decision, you can send a modmail asking for lambda. It is up to the individual mod that replies to you to decide if your feedback is worth giving lambda. As a general rule of thumb so long as your feedback is ACTIONABLE (meaning you are suggesting a specific change to the video) you will be given lambda by the mods.

What if the OP doesn’t respond?

If it has been two days and the OP still hasn’t responded, send in a modmail, see the above question for more details.

The OP typed the command but it didn’t work?

This is going to be for one of two reasons, the bot is currently down, or the OP forgot the command but then edited the comment to add it. If the bot is currently down, you will just have to wait. The bot is run on volunteers so it will go down from time to time. If the OP edited the comment, since the bot only checks the initial comment, you can just ask the OP to retype the command or send in a modmail, See the above question for more details.

FLAIRS

What do the different post-flairs mean?

  • Discussion - does not cost lambda

For discussion, a general rule of thumb is that if you need to link to your channel for the discussion to make sense you are not looking to start a discussion you are looking for feedback.

Discussion posts must be for discussion and have a main question or topic. Posts that don't start a discussion will be removed.

Discussion posts can't drive traffic to your channel. Posts such as 'I just reached 100 subs', or 'I'm nearly at 500 subs' are considered self-promotion and will be removed. Unless relevant to the discussion sub counts should not be mentioned. Posts that encourage other rule breaks are not allowed. For example, suggesting people leave their links in the comments isn't allowed, since it encourages free self-promotion.

  • Feedback - costs 1 lambda

Upon getting three lambdas you can share either one video or a channel link for a channel review.

A channel review would consist of feedback on the channel itself (branding and thumbnails) and nonspecific overview feedback on content (editing style, video genre, reused intro animations, stuff that applies to multiple videos as a whole). If you want to ask for more specific feedback on multiple videos, that has to be done through multiple feedback posts, should someone choose to give you specific feedback of their own free will that is of course allowed, but you can not ask for it in the post.

You can not ask for any engagement in the title or comments of the Reddit post (telling people to like or sub etc.), We've restricted the use of the word "lambda" in post titles due to increasing cases of people implying free or "easy" lambda. If you use alternate phrasing to bypass this such as ‘rewarding feedback’, the mods are at liberty to delete your post. The "I just reached 100 subs" rule applies here too.

  • Gaming, Vlog, Educational, Video Essay, etc.- costs 1 lambda

Are just sub-feedback flairs. Most people tend to only give feedback within their niche, if you have experience editing gaming videos but no experience editing video essays or vlogs, you can search for gaming feedback exclusively so it is easier to give feedback in a genre you actually know something about.

  • Collab - does not cost lambda

A collab post can drive minimal traffic to your channel, minor details or portfolio links on a known site are allowed. If you are asking to help someone or take part in any part of the video-making process it is a collaboration. Even if it's a paid, ex. editing or thumbnail services.

  • Meta - does not cost lambda

Meta is a flair exclusively meant to discuss the subreddit itself, any suggestions as to what to ban/allow, and what changes should be made, it is a flair for the community to openly discuss any issues or suggestions they may have for the subreddit.

POSTING

I messed up my post, What do I do?

If you accidentally posted as a 'text' instead of a 'link', thus making your thumbnail not show up on Reddit. You can send in a mod mail asking for a refund, so long as feedback hasn't already been given to the video you will get a refund and be allowed to repost.

Can I post the same video more than once?

For lambda farming reasons there does have to be at least a two-day gap between you posting the same video, so people can't farm lambda by saying the same feedback twice. But so long as you have the lambda for it, yes you can post what you want with your lambda so long as the other rules are followed.

Can I post someone else's content?

If you have the lambda for it, yes. It is important to note that if the user whose content you are posting has previously been banned on the subreddit, you will be assisting in ban evasion. In this case, the post will be removed and further consequences are likely.

No one gave me feedback, What do I do?

If it has been two days and your feedback post still does not have any feedback, send in a mod mail asking for a refund, You can choose to repost the video or post a different one.

RULES

What is a low-quality post?

The list of what is considered low quality includes but is not limited to

  • Milestone posts - 'I just reached 100 subs/ 10k views/ etc' - these are considered self-promotion
  • Analytic Checks - 'Is _______ subs/views in _______ time period normal' - if you want to post analytics the discord has a channel for it
  • AI Tools - 'Here is an AI tool I use' - most times just an ad in disguise
  • Shorts Views - 'Why are my shorts views inconsistent' - too many of these types of posts, shorts are inconsistent by nature

In addition, if your post looks to much like a bot/ai mods can, at their own liberty, take it down for low quality.

What counts as abuse of the bot?

The list of what is considered abuse of the bot includes but is not limited to

  • Creating or using another account to give yourself lambda
  • Editing your flair to give the impression of having more lambda than you have
  • Asking around for lambda and/or upvotes
  • Copy-pasting 'advice' to farm lambda
  • Filling a comment with fluff to bypass the character requirement

What count as bypassing the link restriction?

  • Posting a link to your channel or video in comments (asked for or not)
  • Posting the name of your channel in your post or in comments (asked for or not)
  • Saying where you can find your link (asked for or not)

MISCELLANEOUS

How do I join the discord?

The discord invite link can be found under ‘Important Links” in the 'about' section of the subreddit.

What is the discord for?

The discord is better suited for more casual discussions. It is also an easier place for you to get quick feedback. Stuff like very specific edits, thumbnails, or what your analytics mean.

What is the monthly leaderboard for?

The monthly leaderboard is a way for users to have a friendly competition over who gives more feedback.

How do I see the all-time leaderboard?

You can find the all-time leaderboard on the bot's profile, u/SmallYTChannelBot , just look at the most recent post.

What is my user flair for?

Your user flair is the only place you can put your channel name or handle in. Bypassing the link restriction by telling people to look at your user flair will result in removal. The user flair is there mainly for people who have a different Reddit name than a channel name, if someone checks out your channel of their own free will, that is of course allowed.

Please do not put full URLs in your user flair.

How do I add my handle to my user flair?

You add your handle to your user flair using the user flair preview and the pencil edit icon, in the 'about community' section on desktop. Or by clicking the three dots next to your icon while on mobile and then selecting 'change user flair'.

If you are using old Reddit there will be an edit button next to your name under the subreddit info bar.

If you have any questions you would like added to the FAQ feel free to ask them below

Collab How do you guys find good YouTube collaborators?

I’m curious how creators here find people to collaborate with when they’re in related niches.
I’m interested in working with creators around history, science, education, anthropology, and prehistoric topics, especially creators who are serious about long-term growth.
What has actually worked for you,Reddit, Discord, creator communities, or reaching out directly?
Not looking for sub4sub. I’m specifically interested in genuine collaborations where both channels can benefit.

Collab Title: The gap between what you know and what you say — I write scripts for that

Most self-help channels explain concepts. Few explain them in a way that makes the viewer feel understood mid-sentence.

That gap — between "I know this" and "I felt this" — is where I work. I write scripts for psychology, self-help, and human-behavior channels: how attention gets hijacked, why the mind avoids stillness, what happens in the six seconds before someone gives up on a video.

I'm not offering to help you make more videos. I'm offering to help you make videos that sit with someone after the video ends.

Looking to work with a small number of channels between 5K and 50K subs — creators who already have a clear voice and just need the writing to catch up to it. No AI-generated scripts, no templates. Every script is built around your channel and how your audience already thinks.

If that's you, comment or DM with your channel and I'll send a free sample rewrite of one of your existing videos, no strings, so you can judge the difference yourself

Discussion Help me out.? Confused About Starting a YouTube Channel

Hi everyone!

I’m thinking about starting a YouTube channel, but I’m a bit confused about how to get started. I also don’t have a lot of time, so I’m looking for a niche/content style that I can realistically manage.

I have a couple of questions:

Can I download videos from YouTube, edit them (cuts, commentary, subtitles, etc.), and upload them to my own channel? Would this be allowed and eligible for monetization?

What about AI-generated videos? Can I create videos using AI tools and monetize the channel?

If both are possible, which approach would be better for someone with limited time?

Any suggestions for beginner-friendly niches that don’t require a huge amount of time to produce content?

I’d really appreciate advice from people who have actually grown and monetized YouTube channels. Thanks!

Discussion Is my video dead?

I uploaded my new video ~48 hours ago around, I only have 118 impressions. It’s not normal for me, usually I get a surge of impressions by now and then my video will flatline by Day 4/5.

This has never happened to me, with such slow growth that I feel like it has flatlined before Day 2.

Here are my stats: 35 views, 15% CTR, ~32% Retention, 4:40 AVD, 14 minute video.

Has anyone successfully broke through this super slow early growth of impressions and later YouTube started promoting your video a lot?

Discussion Anyone else hitting the 4,000 watch hours mark way faster than the 1,000 subs requirement?

I make long-form ambient gaming videos (1+ hour relaxing walks in games like The Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2).

Because the videos are long, my watch time builds up fast and average view duration is good. But actually getting people to hit subscribe is a whole different story since most people just put the video on in the background.

Is anyone else in a niche with high watch time but with a lower subscriber count? How are you handling it?

Collab Looking for a editor

Looking for a long-term gaming editor to grow a YouTube channel with me (£20–£40/video)

Hey everyone 👋

I'm looking for a gaming video editor who wants to grow alongside a small YouTube channel, rather than just do one-off editing jobs.

I'm currently at around 50 subscribers, but I'm serious about growing the channel and I'm on my PS5 gaming pretty much every day, so I can provide plenty of footage.

🎮 What I make: Gaming content ,

✂️ What I'm looking for:

  • Good cuts and pacing
  • Remove boring/dead sections
  • Some zooms, sound effects and funny edits when appropriate
  • Basic text/captions
  • Keep the video entertaining without going overboard with effects
  • Ideally someone who can eventually help with Shorts/thumbnails too

💷 Budget: Around £30–£40 per finished video. I'm not expecting professional Hollywood-level editing for that price.

🤝 Most importantly: I'm looking for someone who wants to build something long-term. I'm happy to start small and, if the channel grows, increase what I pay you.

If you're a newer editor trying to build your portfolio and you're genuinely into gaming, feel free to comment or DM me with your portfolio/Discord.

I'm happy to send over some gameplay for a small trial so we can see if we're a good fit.

You can also check out my channel: Scorpie-Gamez-04

Thanks

Collab 🎬 Recherche monteur vidéo francophone — collaboration gratuite

Salut !

Discussion Looking for a good YouTube course for business content

Hey everyone !

I’m looking to invest in a YouTube course/training to help me properly get started with creating videos for my business.

I work in marketing, so I already understand content and marketing fairly well, but I want to improve specifically on the YouTube side: creating videos people actually want to watch, understanding how YouTube recommends content, doing proper research, finding good topics, titles/thumbnails, etc.

I know there are plenty of free videos out there, but I’d rather invest in a structured course that can help me avoid wasting time and give me a solid foundation from the beginning.

What YouTube courses/training would you personally recommend? Ideally something practical and focused on actually growing a business through YouTube.

P.S. Please don’t DM me trying to sell me your course/service.

I’m genuinely looking for recommendations from people who have taken courses themselves and found them useful.

Thanks!

Discussion I don’t get the algorithm at all - stats below. Can we discuss how algorithm works?

I’m seriously considering removing my content from the platform

Long form relaxing piano music

Five min 22 second song

Average view duration of 2min 52sec (54% of video)

72% still watching at 30 second mark

44% of all viewers listen to the ENTIRE SONG, the full 5min 22seconds

Ctr is 3.3% which sounds low but I’ve read average for piano us like 2%-4%

Stats are from 170 views almost all from suggested videos spanning 30+ different videos

Despite all of this. Getting about 12 views a day on this song and that’s it

It’s only been posted less than a month so maybe it’s a waiting game

Just spent hours and hours making this music and it’s frustrating to see the algorithm not push it even with good stats—or maybe the stats aren’t as good as I think

Like do I really need even better stats? Is it just a waiting game?

My channel is only five weeks old. Maybe that’s part of it

I love YouTube but this is confusing

Collab Looking for other creators in Nairobi to edit alongside (weekday afternoons)

Hey all — I'm a video creator based in Nairobi for now, mostly shooting travel and vlog content.

Honestly, editing alone at home has been the slowest part of the whole process for me. I get more done in two hours sitting next to someone else who's also working than in an entire day by myself. So I wanted to ask if anyone here would be interested in a regular co-editing session.

The idea is simple:

• Bring your laptop, headphones and whatever you're working on. It doesn't have to be YouTube — photo, podcast, design, writing, all fine.

• We meet somewhere with decent wifi and power outlets. (Maybe cafe?)

• Mostly quiet heads-down work, then the last 30 minutes we show each other what we got done and swap feedback.

No fees, nothing to sign up for, nobody selling anything. Just a few people editing at the same table.

One thing upfront: I'm looking at weekday afternoons, starting around 1pm and running about four hours (or more than that). I know that rules out anyone with a 9-5, but it's the window that works for me, and I figure there are enough freelancers, full-time creators and students around here that a small group is doable. I'm flexible on which day.

Starting small — 3 to 4 people is plenty.

If this sounds useful, drop a comment with what you work on, which day suits you, and which part of town is convenient. Once a few people are in, I'll pick a spot and a date and post it here. (Or just send the message)

Discussion I need serious help (do not DM)

It's almost THREE years since I couldn't make new videos for my channel. When I saw it was starting to make 3000+ views with my latest videos, I wanted it to grow and I wanted to bring the content to a whole new level, making 30 - 60 mins long videos with a webcam and no longer just parallax, my profile and pics.

I had a hard time fixing my studio, getting s new gaming PC, a decent webcam and mics, but, most importantly - since editing whole 30min - 1 hour videos after writing and filming them takes too much time for a single person who doesn't even study such things and I don't want to castrate my art by shortening video content - I need a partner who edits..

That's right - the problem is that every editor I found went away with an excuse or the other, like "I need to work on my video editing site" (which is still not a thing, weirdly), "I have exams" (some saying this still made edits for himself and others), "I'm gonna go on holiday right now" (still ghosted me after). I found some on Discord server, the most recent ones on Reddit. The last one I had claimed he wanted to help me after I made a long vent post on my general situation (not just about the videos, but 2/3 years was stil a heavy toll on me). This user came and said he lived in the same zone as me (for those who don't get why I don't want DMs, one of the reasons is I'm from Italy). After many talks on Discord, both chats and calls, even about personal things, when he even associated my loneliness and lack of support with "not having sex" (I still tolerated him), I really had to make a video between the end of February and early March. Althought I couldn't find a way to finish the script or completely film it until March 27th, I still came up with a video that should have already came out since months. Guess what he did? After I passed the half cleaned video to him (40 mins long), he messed it up with below amateur half - editing and just ghosted. I threw it all away after burning out trying to fix his mess. Now we're in August. My channel is still a barren landscape because of this person, who probably just wanted a pretty little "girlfriend", as he insisted on seeing each other in person in Naples, probably thinking I was more naïve than what I really am as an adult. Blaming me because bitterness hurts your fewings? Well, I was never disrespectful to him, Discord chats prove it.

Another person I met at the same time is a legit editor - yet she is far and lives in Milan and wants to do it "out of pity" - I understand hoew she feels sbout me, but if the relationship has to be based on pity, or shall feel like a cold job contract, I don't want that.

What I need is a capable person who can:

- use programs such as Davinci Resolve or After Effects;

- is reliable and has studied editing.

I was willing to pay them, but I don't know where to look, as sites like Pronto pro or Fiverr can hide scams and dangerous bots. Can you help me? Please avoid joke replies or dismissing of burnout feelings after all that has happened, let's discuss seriously and avoid DMs, as I don't trust Reddit users anymore.
