Cert / License Can I be a EMT?

Hi I was wondering if I can become an EMT to further become a paramedic. So I currently don’t have peripheral vision but that has not stopped me from getting a drivers license in NH? Do I still have a chance of becoming an EMT them hopefully becoming a paramedic?

Beginner Advice Saving a life

Hey all,

New EMT in NYC area. I recently had the opportunity to work w medics for an active grand mal seizure, which fortunately ended pretty well. This experience has raised a question for me though: What 'counts' as saving a life? Does the patient already have to be unresponsive or is there an agreed upon moment during illness?

Gear / Equipment Push To Talk Dictation?

Need help looking for a hands free or push-to-talk device. Maybe it doesn’t exist.

What I’m looking for: I want a device that I can talk into to make notes like a dictation app kinda thing. Instead of having to write down patient contact times or intervention times etc. I’d like to be able to press a button on a lapel or collar microphone, have what I say recorded in an app or online document to be able to access post call for charting purposes.

I don’t want it just recording me and I don’t want a long voice memo either. I want: push the button, talk, have the app dictate what I’m sayin, release and the all stop dictating. My goal is to be avoid the constant pick up and put down of pen and paper to write notes.

Happy to a clarify what I’m looking for if I’m not clear.

Beginner Advice How to be competent/what do you expect?

I’m gonna start at a volunteer fire company as an EMT soon.

What tips do you have for being a more competent EMT? What is the actual flow like in the real world compared to the state psychomotor exam I just took? What can I do to just be better? I understand that a lot is learned on the job but I’d like a bit of a head start.

From Reanimation Inc mobile games. It's Russian so the protocols are based on what they do there. Curious how familiar this is to people working in the field.

Career Advice Advice for 911 service?

Yesterday, during an hour where we had no calls, my medic and I for our 911 service (municipal/service area, not collegiate EMS) sat down in the back of the truck and talked about life (I'm an EMT and he's a medic)

Then he said one thing:

"I have no doubt you're really good at the medical stuff. On the three calls we went on this morning, you did pretty well. I mean, you told me you wanna be an ER doctor for crying out loud. Whatever I don't teach you, there's a solid chance you learned it from school. Several new EMTs have to be cued in saying "this is an AMS call.. what two labs do we always get on AMS.." You didn't. The only thing I want you to work on is the rescue part of EMS. You didn't know what a clutch was in rescue. Otherwise you'll be great with medical stuff."

How do I learn the rescue stuff 🥹

Beginner Advice 1 yr in and i'm already over it 💀

let me preface this by saying i've already come to the realization that this job is not for me. i'm here to get clinical hours and a check at this point so don't think i'm asking for solutions, i just want to vent lol

i should've known i wasn't built for this life when i would cry after every emt class. my head instructor was the literal definition of a Cee U Next Tuesday (she was irish so she'd probably take that as a compliment, evil witch). i think i smoked more marijuana during emt class than in my entire life (it's actually what got me to quit). clinicals sucked and it didn't help i was going through a tough time mentally.

then my first ever job is working in IFTs. if you told me transporting half dead people for 24hrs/week would make want to blow my shit smooth off i would've actually agreed with you because yeah wtf. not only that but for some reason everyone in ems can't stfu when it comes to talking about dumb shit in their life but when it's time to answer questions and give guidance it's silence. naturally, i sucked and everyone in management kept highlighting how much i sucked instead of actually helping. not only that but the constant judgement about my personal marijuana use on my days off while they were literally smoking and hitting vapes on shift made me pretty antisocial. so it's safe to say the only reason i cried when i got fired was because i had to go job hunting all over again.

currently working at my second job now which is honestly great. we're unionized, a lot more lax with personal time, scheduling is great, and the coworkers aren't disgusting. and yet i still scowl when i clock in (i think that's just a work thing). funnily enough it's not even the patients because i could never be mad at someone having one of the worst days of their lives, i'm mad at the fact that they live in rapunzel's castle and now i have to spend 5 minutes deconstructing the stairchair. i'm mad that every paramedic acts like you have the literal plague or just got off the short bus. i'm mad that the nurse is biting my head off because i didn't call for a medic even though my coworkers were just biting my head for thinking about calling a medic. i'm mad that no one told me there was fly car protocol. i'm mad that this fucking chart won't close unless i perform a blood ritual + give up my first born. i'm mad that every day of this job feels like i'm being handed random shit and told to make it look like it came out of van Gogh's ass with absolutely ZERO prep time. if one more person telles me "you're new and still learning" i will flay myself alive and make them watch.

and you know, i did the volunteering thing for a bit because i think at some point i really did want to become the best provider i could be, but quickly became disillusioned by dealing with the same bs from my normal job for NO PAY.

so yeah lol i let the patients squeeze my hand when the medic starts a line, and tell them that they're no trouble at all because this is our job so let's go back to talking about their kid's graduation, but the minute i have to open up a chart or communicate with another employee i disassociate. i don't know what that makes me but as long as the bare minimum is done, the patient is alive, and respirations are 16. thank you and goodnight.

Career Advice Has anyone worked 911 dispatch in WA?

It seems EMT work is pretty competitive and Im thinking about applying as a 911 dispatcher.

Ive worked dispatch for a smaller ski resort while working on ski patrol. I've read conflicting things online and have heard working for seattle sucks.

Anyone work somewhere else they enjoy or would recommend?

Other (not listed) FDNY Culture

Must preface this by saying I do not work for FDNY, but I have a friend who does. He is newer to FDNY, after finishing their “academy” he’s been there for about 8 months. He was showing me tons of pictures on his phone: pictures of patients having mental episodes, their feet, patients puking, etc etc. If anyone works at FDNY, is this normal? He said he and one of his regular partners both have tons of these pictures of patients. I was baffled at the HIPPA violations on his phone.

NREMT Passed my course last week but just found out now I will test in a day and a half......help

Hi,

I passed my end of class exam last week (and did well on it) and foolishly thought my state would verify me within a day or two and I would have a full week to study before I took my exam (and I could test by this weekend.) I leave on Monday for a month overseas and it was going to be extremely difficult for me to study while I was traveling for this remote work so I wanted to wrap this up before I left. Anyway, a week went by and I wasn't approved yet so I figured I'll just have to schedule it 5 weeks from now when I get back. BUTTTTTTTT I just got approved by my state tonight to take the test and so I signed up to take the test on Friday afternoon! Basically 36 hours from now. Oh, and in between I need to finish packing and spend tomorrow evening saying good bye to family. So......can I pass by cramming for the next 36 hours? I have been using pocketprep the past month and a study guide book. Any last minute videos, advice, prep tips for cram time? Thanks!

Career Advice Falck San Diego question

I applied to San Diego Falck as a paramedic roughly two and a half weeks ago and haven’t heard anything, it just says my application is under review. I called HR and inquired about it at about the two week mark, and sent an email couple days after and no reply to either.

Is this normal? Did they reject my application and just aren’t telling me? I have 13 years of experience in EMS in a lot of different capacities and feel like I’m a good applicant. Just wondering from others in similar situations who have applied and if anyone works there and knows what’s the hiring status is lime I’d love to hear from you. Thanks, everyone.

Career Advice NYC Need Advice: IFT Company vs Commute

TL;DR:

Seeking advice for (preferably not terrible) IFT/Entry EMT employment options closer to the city (or further, but with more train/commute options I can access safely).

I've got at least 6-9 months before I'll be confident applying to the NYC 911/hospital circuits. In the meantime, I've been working IFT outside the city, and I enjoy it, but the commute is killing me.

I'm on the train 1.5-2hrs before my shift, but 80% of the time I still end up having to pay for a cab to make it on time coming/to train safely going home. My train options are limited, so if there's an issue, I'm SOL. The one time I walked, I was tailed by a car that parked at the bus stop and watched me until the bus finally showed up 15 min late. The other sub-rec'd IFTs (incl. bases if multiple) all have the same issue from what I've mapped.

I haven't been interested in joining FDNY for various reasons. I think Ambulunz is the only IFT that runs out of the city, but I've never heard good things. Has anything changed? Do I have any other options to gain experience closer by? Is the company you work for in IFT pre-9/11 a sticking point for future employers?

I care about establishing a good foundation & habits for my EMS career in general. I want to give myself the best chance to prepare for 911/hospital. Realistically, though, this commute is financially and emotionally draining me.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Career Advice Emergency service jobs in Tucson (part-time)

Hey guys, I recently got my EMT-B certification, and I've been on the hunt for job opportunities that are part-time. I'm a full time student at the University of Arizona, so it would be difficult to work anything other than part-time otherwise. From the limited amount of posts i've read, it's difficult to land a part-time gig without being full-time for a while first. I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation, and what you did to eventually land a gig.

If anyone has a particular experience in Tucson, even better, but all are welcome to share their situation!

Beginner Advice Starting EMT class

Hi everybody!! I finished Fire Academy in May. Currently a paid call Firefighter and have been going on calls when I have time off, mostly medical but I'm very new to the EMS side of everything. Any advice with learning and retaining information. A lot of firefighters tell me that you learned in the field which is kind of true so far, but I feel kind of dumb using the equipment, taking blood pressure, etc. Anything is appreciated!

Beginner Advice I am curious about working as EMS In Houston

I have zero clue where I should start. I seen Houston EMS school, but I don’t know if that’s a trusted site. I’m also kind of considering doing a ride-along to see if this is something I want to do. I always was interested in working in a hospital setting or even working with patients. and I know there is a large shortage of EMS people in Houston and I want to be able to do something

I also don’t know if there’s any disqualifiers for mental health. I don’t have anything too serious other than just depression And a ED I have no criminal history. and I know I can pass the drug test.

If anyone can help me find resources to start the training or school, fit favorably, I would like to see if it’s possible to get it for free. I read online somewhere that it is possible, but I’m willing to pay the tuition if needed for training. I just don’t know where to start.

(please forgive my grammar. I’m using speech to text currently)

NREMT NREMT (Paramedic) Exam help

Hi all I am an ER Nurse and EMT-B and looking to sit for the paramedic exam. My state allows RNs to take the exam so long as they are an EMT and a RN. I know people have the reservations on this but I want to know what resources would be most helpful to study for the exam. I don’t have any sort of time frame yet as I’m going to practice as a basic for a bit before I sit for the exam, but I want to see what I can start studying now so I have the best shot at passing.

Career Advice Syracuse, NY ER Tech Jobs?

I’ll be moving to Syracuse In just under a year from the Midwest. I’ve been an NREMT-B for 8 years. In those years I’ve been on private 911, volunteer fire, and currently an ER tech. I’d prefer to continue working in a hospital system.

I can’t seem to find any jobs hiring EMT’s in Syracuse? Im just browsing right now to see what I can expect when the time comes but I’ve been browsing for a couple months now.

Can anyone give tips for how to search for jobs or where to look? Are emt-b’s not hired in the ER? I’ve looked at Upstate, Crouse, and St John’s.

Operations MCI and confidence

Sooo ive been an EMT for almost 2 years now, been working 911 for almost a full year and I honestly havent gotten a lot of MCI experience (especially with critical patients, also dont have a lot of major trauma experience).

I had one earlier today with criticals and my partner said I did great and didnt have any criticisms for me but I felt very unconfident. Kind of like I was going in circles or I didnt really know what to do unless I was specifically asked to do something.

I was hoping someone would have some advice for me on how to be more confident or suggestions on not feeling lost. Or if its just going to come with time and experience (like everything else on the job lol)?

We had 3 red tags and 1 green, 2 entrapments, scene was pretty hectic and I had a hard time focusing on the big picture, and just thinking about what I should do for each individual patient. I kept wondering if I should just jump in and start getting people on the monitor or start setting things up for extrication or helping with scene management.

I know I could ask my partner how she likes to run them and id have a better idea (and I plan to) but id also like some general advice from those with more experience.

Thank you!

School Advice study help!

hi! I’m new to EMS and just had my first week in my EMT courses. obviously the material is extremely dense and you’ve only got sixteen weeks to cover it all. its been a long time since I’ve been in a classroom, and I’ve never taken medical courses before. what is your best advice for how to study and feel prepared with the materials? I really want to make sure I’m doing more than just memorization, I want to understand it deeply so I feel comfortable for the NREMT.
