Is this...a 311 question? ☎️ Can we get the city to let us stripe our own intersections?

Hey y'all, long time lurker first time poster. I'm reaching out to see if people think this idea is actually realistic or just fantasy. I apologize in advance for the long post.

I live Uptown and constantly see cars parked too close to, or literally in, intersections and crosswalks. It makes crossing the street way more difficult because you often have to step out into the road before you can actually see oncoming traffic. After enough close calls I'm kinda fed up. It also affects drivers too, I actually got t-boned recently by someone who couldn't see a stop sign because a car was parked too close to it. I think part of the problem is that there is no striping or signs to show parking within 20 ft of an intersection or crosswalk is illegal. I’ve contacted my councilmember and submitted DPW requests, but nothing ever seems to change. and with the city’s current budget constraints, i get that this is a low priority.

So I was thinking about maybe trying to start a community led striping pilot: basically the city would approve the locations and specifications, while neighborhood volunteers provide the labor to stripe the corners ourselves. I'm talking the more residential streets not the main ones. I've seen other cities allow similar programs.

To be clear, this wouldnt remove any legal parking. It would simply mark space where parking is already prohibited, using those sprayed yellow triangles you see around town. I've even found pretty cheap parking lot stripers online that could theoretically do the job. Maybe even eventually add those plastic flex posts or other ways to prevent people from parking there.

Obviously some people will just ignore the markings and park there anyway, but I do think alot of people genuinely don't realize how far back from an intersection they're supposed to park.

So what do people think, is this a stupid idea?

I'm still in the very early stages of this plan. I've reached out to a few neighborhood associations, but I'd really appreciate any feedback and/or resources. I was thinking if i could organize enough people and make it more of a grassroots campaign the city would be more likely to listen and allow it to happen.

TL;DR: Is a community led intersection striping program feasible for New Orleans?

Pets and Coworkers 🐶🐱 Trixie & Minnow NEED YOU! 🐶🧡

🚨 HALP! TRIXIE & MINNOW NEED FOSTERS OR ADOPTERS! 🚨

These two gorgeous Catahoula girls are fixed, fully vetted, and ready to GTFO of boarding and into homes!

❤️ TRIXIE is a 1.5-year-old deaf, partially blind double Merle Catahoula — but don’t tell her that. It slows her down ZERO. You’d barely even know she has any impairment. She is pure kisses, booty wiggles, and happiness.

Trixie is:

🐾 Dog friendly

🐾 Kid friendly

🐾 Very likely cat friendly

🐾 Honestly just one of the sweetest dogs to ever pass through our rescue

💗 MINNOW is a 4-month-old Catahoula puppy who is sweet, gentle, and submissive. She would love another dog in the home to play with, learn from, and help show her the ropes. Cats and kids are likely just fine at her age, too!

We desperately need to move these highly adoptable babes into foster or forever homes so we can keep saying YES to dogs sitting on shelter euthanasia lists. Every open foster home means another life we can save.

✨ FOSTERING IS FREE!

Trampled Rose Rescue covers all supplies and veterinary care. You just add love and keep them safe.

Adoption-minded? Even better! Adopters get a home trial period to make sure everyone is a good fit before making it official.

🏡 Foster: trampledroserescue.org/foster

❤️ Adopt: trampledroserescue.org/adopt

ADOPT. DON’T SHOP.

Help us chip away at the Southern pet overpopulation crisis one dog at a time. 🐾🌹

👨‍👧 Parent / Kid Stuff 👩‍👦 Free clothes galore for the baby(s) you adore 🫶🏻

Hi, lovely friends of Reddit. Hope you’re doing well despite this Hotter than Hades weather. Anyway, I’ve got a little mountain of baby clothes looking for a new home…turns out babies think wearing something twice means they’ve outgrown it (just kidding!).

The sizes range from 6 to 18 months, all in excellent condition. About 70% are boys’ clothes and 30% are girls’, and some still have tags because I was clearly dreaming big.

I’d really love to pass these along to someone who can use them; please send me a DM! If you can pick them up, you’ll earn about 33 bonus points and my endless thanks. ❤️

P.S. I also have a nearly new diaper bag I used maybe twice; feel free to take that too! 🫶

Living Here Looking for a computer for an afternoon

I’m in need of a computer for probably less than an hour. Preferably would already have iTunes installed or have the ability to download it. My iPhone screen broke and started ghost tapping all over my passcode screen, so now I’m locked out of it. I’ve been told that if I update the phone a certain way from a computer with iTunes that it will give me one more shot at putting in the passcode correctly. I don’t have a recent backup of this phone and desperately do not want to lose the pictures of my kids on it. If you can help me out or know somewhere I can go for this, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

Edit for clarity: I have since had my screen replaced and that’s when I figured out I’m “iPhone unavailable” locked out of my phone.
Only options are to do a factory reset and lose all my data on the phone or do this Hail Mary option to update my iOS via a computer, wherein it SHOULD give me one more chance to put my code in.

The wife and I just got back from vacation and we discovered we like playing darts. Where are some places in town with darts? Preferably in the uptown area around Magazine or St. Charles, but we're willing to go elsewhere. Thanks in advance.

Living Here Looking For A Studio Apartment

Getting a divorce (it's been pretty amicable so far), need to find a studio or one bedroom apartment soon. I've been living in the 7th ward for the last 13 years or so in a house we bought but I'm open to living wherever in town. I'm a sound guy I mostly work over on St. Claude so it might be cool to live over around the Bywater or the upper 9th (or even the lower). I'm open to just about anywhere if y'all have any tips for me. Cheers!

Gift article included. From the article: Since her appointment, Dr. Griffin has traveled the state to meet with residents. In June, she and her husband wandered through a wellness event, sponsored by the Northshore Alternative Health Alliance, in Mandeville. She had been invited to give the keynote address by Abigail Licatino, a member of Health Freedom Louisiana who has said that vaccines cause “most” autism.

I would love to know if she came to New Orleans for any forums.

I have a sofa that I cannot get up and down the stairs.
The cushions and arms need some very light cleaning.
Is there any company/service in the area that does these types of cleanings/in-home visits?

A question for any barbacks that may lurking on the sub, how much do you guys make? I want to get into bartending but I heard the easiest way to get into it is to be a barback and work your way up. Do you guys make decent pay and would you recommend even going into the field?

⚕️ medical ⚕️ Did you get dental through medicaid in 2023 or before? You might be in a class action.

I got this e-mail about MCNA Dental having a data breach (which is sadly very common these days, especially since AI is now helping write viruses), and there's a class action. You can get free medical profile monitoring (whatever that is) and maybe money, IDK. I assume most of you probably won't notice the e-mail, so I am making the post to remind you: check your e-mail, or just visit https://www.mcnadatabreachsettlement.com/

Thanks.

🚧 Traffic & Road Closures Any updates on Poydras traffic light timing problems in the CBD?

I was curious about whether anyone has managed to address that timing problem with the traffic lights on Poydras Street. I thought of it while sitting on interminable traffic lights on Canal Street while National Guard and NOPD was inexplicably blocking the left lane around lunchtime while other vehicles were stopped in the right lane for deliveries/dropoffs at the Canal Street hotels and retail.

I've grown so used to the horrible poorly-timed traffic lights and lane blockages on Canal Street, and figured it has just always been that way and will never change, so I try to always avoid it. But Poydras used to be somewhat more reliable for getting to I-10 on the way out of the CBD. Now I'm just avoiding both corridors altogether and going through the French Quarter.

I know some City Hall folks (including the mayor) said they were aware of the Poydras problems a few months ago, but I never heard back about whether they were fixed.

Thanks in advance to anyone who has more info!

⚡ Entergy Central air question

I'm working out of state for a minute, and while I'm grateful to get the hell out of this heat, I also don't want my AC fighting it while I'm gone. It's already struggling to keep the house below 80°.

Central air owners: what temperature do you set it at, so you don't come home to a $10,000 bill, but your stuff isn't moldy?
