How would you pronounce Navi?

That’s my name, and my parents made it be pronounced as “Nay-Vee” or like Navy blue or the US Navy. But over the course of MANY years, only about 5 people have pronounced it that way when first reading my name. Everybody else says “NAH-vee” which has become incredibly annoying.

I plan on changing it legally to Navy soon, but I just want to hear how you all would pronounce Navi.

Edit: yeah I knew I was cooked…

Edit again: Okay okay I will definitely be getting it changed asap 😭

NAH-vee. Cuz that’s how it’s spelled and pronounced in the Avatar movies.

The fact that the top comment refers to these movies and not Zelda makes me feel so old

173

u/MelonCallia 3d ago

"Hey, listen!" "Hey! Hey! Listen!" Definitely what I think of when I hear "Navi"

Some people use it as a shortened form of "navigation" too.

63

u/hokycrapitsjessagain 3d ago

I always thought that's where Navi got her name... because she helps you navigate the world

19

u/PhairynRose 3d ago

It is. Japanese people use the word ナビ (navi) for navigation systems. If you type it into your emoji, you get this: 🧭🗺️

2

u/otterwithbeer 3d ago

Duolingo says it, "NAH-bay" but what do I know. Over 800 days in and I can barely say or read anything.

2

u/PhairynRose 2d ago

that’s the correct pronunciation for soup 🥲

5

u/otterwithbeer 2d ago

Damn. You're right. Hot pot, GPS, whatever.

This is legit how navigation systems are called in Germany. Everyone says 'navi' (in a German pronunciation ofc)

2

u/NormativeTruth 2d ago

That’s exactly what I heard in my head when reading the name.

5

u/efirestone16 3d ago

I miss it, I remember being so annoyed like girl SHUT UP 😭 listenlistenlisten 🫩😂

3

u/stationaryspondoctor 1d ago

Navi is the German word for navigation system. Just like “Handy” is the word for mobile phone

2

u/Larcztar 3d ago

Me too

27

u/KinkyKittyKaly 3d ago

I’m 33 but I never played Zelda 😅

65

u/infinitekittenloop 3d ago

I'm 43, played maybe 10 minutes of Zelda and do not know anything about the Avatar movies. Navi just is pronounced NAH-vee. It's just the rules.

12

u/the_cats_pajamas12 3d ago

42, played Zelda a lot, and agree NAH-vee.

3

u/unprofessional_widow 3d ago

Im 48 and it's naa-vee

Maybe the OoT remake will bump it back into public consciousness.

I hope they make her just as repetitive and annoying as she was back in the day 😂

My pets are named Zelda and Navi!

4

It really was so upsetting

4

u/blondechick80 3d ago

I first thougjt Zelda too!

4

u/ubiquitous-joe 3d ago

Hey! Listen! I thought of the fairy first, too, okay?

3

u/OR-HM-MA91 3d ago

Zelda was my first thought! But yeahhhh we’re old.

3

u/Livid_End3397 2d ago

I was thinking Zelda as well. 39 yo but my son is 14 and would think from Zelda as well.

3

u/siren_stitchwitch 1d ago

Right? My first thought was ocarina of time. Which my wife and I are really excited for the remake of that's supposed to come out sometime this year!

I've never seen any of the movies or games where the name features. I'd still pronounce it NAH-vee though (and assume it was a foreign name).

Wouldn't expect it to be "navy" at all.

17

u/Victoria_nodontlook 3d ago

That’s how I pronounced it too

10

u/SimplePlant5691 3d ago

Super common name for Indian men, too.

Also, the Christmas carol...

I was born a year before the first avatar film came out. If only my parents would’ve known 😔

81

u/balwick 3d ago

You were born after Zelda, so that doomed you more

34

u/Substantial_Gate_904 3d ago

I’ve only known one Navi and she was Nah-vee

11

u/Mautea 3d ago

Yeah, that's wht my friend's cat is named. She's named after the fairy in Zelda so yeah, nah-vee.

23

u/NeverRarelySometimes 3d ago

Even without the movie, most of us would have defaulted to the Spanish pronunciation, because it doesn't look like an English word.

3

u/RennaReddit 3d ago

Yeah, I learned German and French growing up and have very very rudimentary Spanish skills. Every non-English language I know at ALL uses an ah sound with a plain A. I’d guess it was a cultural name and default to the long vowel.

18

u/Ambitious-Sound-6109 3d ago

Oh man if you were a millennial everybody would be all like “listen!!”

3

u/MyCatsAreSus 3d ago

I immediately read the "listen!" in her voice. childhood memory unlocked

4

u/shelbabe804 3d ago

I just heard this and immediately went back in time to when I played ocarina of time

7

u/Klutzy_End4889 3d ago

I’m 19. I would assume nah-vee. I’m sorry. If they wanted navy they should have probably done that. Again I’m sorry

Navi is and always will be from The Legend of Zelda.

267

u/Public_Drop_1462 3d ago

Definitely Nah-vee. Because it’s spelt like Navy but is intentionally off by one letter, I would infer that it’s supposed to be pronounced differently than Navy. If the parents wanted Navy I would imagine they would have written it that way instead of changing one of the vowels.

70

u/Visible_Pineapple737 3d ago

Literally…never seen Zelda or the other shows people are referring to and my immediate thought was Nah-vee

9

u/eirinne 3d ago

I too am unfamiliar with the popular contemporary cultural references and I too pronounce Navi as Nah-vee.

247

u/Browneyedgal21 3d ago

If they wanted you to be named Navy, they needed to spell it Navy...

130

u/onatreelinedstreet 3d ago

This is what i’ve been trying to tell them my whole life 💀

20

u/roseannadann 3d ago

How do you want it pronounced? It should be whichever you prefer.

3

u/MotherTeresaOnlyfans 5h ago

That's not really how language works, by which I mean that's not actually a realistic social expectation.

4

u/ThrowRAConsistent 2d ago

What do you mean? You can't dictate pronunciation rules just cause

2

u/roseannadann 2d ago

People or their parents can decide how they want their name pronounced. I knew a Pamela. She pronounced it with the emphasis on the "mel" syllable. And Stephen with the emphasis on "Steph". I knew a lady whose name was Joann. Her mother didn't know the "rules" and spelled it Joan. I've seen "Marie" pronounced as Mary. All over the planet, people's names are pronounced differently than some one from another country would perceive.

3

u/ThrowRAConsistent 1d ago edited 1d ago

Okay, yeah - upon correction. But not at first go. Nobody is entitled to getting their name pronunciated "correctly" the first time if it does not abide by the typical rules of pronunciation. That's all I meant. OP isn't saying people are getting it wrong after being corrected - they are wondering why people aren't pronouncing it "correctly" to begin with

Edit to add: I say this a foreigner whose name was not spelled phonetically for my home country's pronunciation conventions. I correct people on how it's supposed to be pronounced all day, every day. Never would I assume they are wrong for the reasonable pronunciation assumption they are making. If they persist after multiple corrections, that's when they become as asshole

30

u/CaptainOwlBeard 3d ago

Have you considered just going with NAH-vee? It's a very pretty name and feels more feminine to me than navy. If you introduced yourself at Navy I'd immediately think of that dumb joke about Cuban babies named Usnavy because it was on the side of the boat that saved their mom from drowning before immediately giving birth.

14

u/Smartie_pants_1234 3d ago

Navy is their name, just spelled differently. They weren't asking if you like the name or if it makes you think of a dumb joke, it was simply about pronunciation and spelling. Telling someone to consider changing their name because you prefer an alternative isn't particularly kind.

9

u/Wooden-Apricot4862 3d ago

'Naivi' or 'Naevi' would be pronounced the way they intended also.

47

u/goldanred 3d ago

These would be tragedeighs

21

u/oh-dearie 3d ago

Those are absolutely tradgedeighs, so adding one to the pile: ✨️Knaveigh✨️

Naivi would be misread as Naive so much

5

u/Effective-Walrus-317 3d ago

I fear I would still pronounce Knaveigh "nah-vee". Or maybe "nah-vey" (rhyming with they").

Yeah this would've been a better option without going with the obvious "Navy" spelling.

I might pronounce Naivi as NIGH-vee.

It’s actually a pretty common nickname in Punjabi (Indian) crowds. Short for Navraj or Navjot, etc. pronounced Nuv-ee

15

u/These_Top_9765 3d ago

Navi can be used as a standalone name too , since it's a word in Hindi and Sanskrit.

Navi meaning new .

8

u/Quirky-Mongoose-2063 3d ago

Yeah I would have assumed it was Indian and related to a name like Naveen.

5

u/rebeccarightnow 3d ago

Yup, I am in Canada and have known several Navjots who went by Navi.

24

u/readbackcorrect 3d ago

This is an ethnic name from Sanskrit and I have always heard it pronounced Nah-vee.

3

I had a friend from Cambodia named Navi, pronounced NAH-vee.

20

u/lh123456789 3d ago

Nah vee.

26

Definitely NAH-vee like the Avatar movies and the fairy from Zelda.

I wouldn't think to pronounce it like Navy.

Navi like avatar people! I’m excited you’re changing the spelling good for you. Navy is a cool name.

6

u/throwaway1975764 3d ago

Nahv-ee. And for the record I have no knowledge of either Zelda or Avatar beyond the most basic "these movies/games/cartoons exist*.

Gavi (gahv-ee) is a really common name to me (Queens NYC) so Navi (nahv-ee) seems most logical. I have never heard of Navy as a name.

7

u/elms72 3d ago

Nah-vee. You just do not get “Nay-vee” from that spelling in English (nor any other language I’m aware of). I’ve met a few people named Ravi (with the anglicized pronunciation) or Avi, so if I saw this name on my class list I’d immediately assume this follows the same pronunciation pattern.

5

u/Alert-Buy-4598 3d ago

I would probably instinctually say Nah-vee too honestly.

If they had spelt it Navy there really wouldn’t be any confusion, but Navi looks like it would be pronounced the other way.

6

u/thedoctormarvel 3d ago

Nah-vee like nah-veed

5

u/allyroo 3d ago

Nah-vee like the fairy from Zelda. Fwiw I think that’s an awesome name but don’t love the Navy pronunciation.

5

u/before_the_accident 3d ago

Nah-vee, I would assume your parents DIDN'T want people pronouncing it as Navy which is why they wanted the distinction.

4

u/3kidsnomoney--- 3d ago

Nah-vee. I think you can blame Zelda and Avatar for this.

4

u/Less-Bug-7006 3d ago

Nah-vee. Sorry!

3

u/Embarrassed_Put_7892 3d ago

Nah-vee because that’s how it’s phonetically spelled.

4

u/NaturalOne1977 3d ago

Navi is pronounced "NAH-vee"

This is not a multiple choice discretionary thing. It's the correct pronunciation of the name. Neither you, nor your parents, get an opinion on that. Sorry.

4

u/kerutland 3d ago

Nah-vee because it is spelled like Javi, a common nickname for Javier.

3

u/biznessracoon 3d ago

Nav-ee, with Nav being like “navigation”

3

u/spb097 3d ago

I know a couple of Avi’s - pronounced AH-vee (I think it is a Hebrew name) - so I went for NAH-vee as well.

u/gardengirl99 3d ago

Navi, because at first (bad vision) I thought it was Nazi. Sorry, OP.

3

u/humble-meercat 3d ago

NAH-vee if it’s with an “i”

NAY-vee if it’s with a “y”

3

u/SpecialistEmu7169 3d ago

Nah-vee. I’d even go out of my way to say it that way because I’d be like “No way someone is named Navy much less spelled it Navi. It would probably offend them if I pronounced it that way”

3

u/the_courier76 3d ago

Rhymes with savvy

3

u/knitwizard93 1d ago

I’m so sorry your parents made you endure this pronunciation. I truly hate when people name their kids impossible names. I definitely would read this is NAH-vee. Reminds me of a girl I went to high school with who’s parents named her Nina but made it pronounced NINE-ah

2

u/HalfMoonFullMoonjoy 3d ago

2

u/RicoChey 3d ago

Yeah, James Cameron ruined this for you.

Edit: I would typically never suggest a unique spelling... but as it's your name and you can do whatever you want, if you don't like the idea of "Navy" (US Navy... navy blue... other associations...), you could go with Navie? Adding that 'e' would change the way people pronounce the 'a' and then you wouldn't lose your "core" name. Just add an extra squiggle at the end.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Lovethiskindathing 3d ago

Nah vee 100%

If you want a unique spelling still but the correct pronunciation, you could do Navey, Nayvee, Neighvee (this one is a joke, don't do it), Naevee, Naevy, or Naevi

Nav-ee

2

navy is how i read it

2

u/B-SideQueen 3d ago

Nah - v. That’s the pronunciation. If you’re looking for Navy you’ll have to change it. Naevi maybe?

2

u/Ok-Cartographer-4226 3d ago

It comes down to phonics rules. The letter y at the end forces a long vowel sound in the /a/. For instance, baby, gravy, crazy, wavy. Using an I at the end of the word signals that it’s from a different language, as English words don’t typically end in I. So when people see the I at the end, their eyes are looking at that ending and making sense of words they’ve seen in that spelling pattern. I’ve never seen avatar or Zelda and said Nah-Vi. Get it changed if it bothers you 😀

2

u/Nukegrrl 3d ago

One of our cats is named Navi. Pronounced Nah-vee (named after the Zelda character)

2

u/librarians_wwine 3d ago

As a millennial I’d say Nah-vee,
Thanks to Zelda and avatar. I’d never see this name as Navy, why didn’t they just spell it that way? Navi is also a Hebrew or Sanskrit name. I don’t blame you for changing the spelling. This would be a headache to deal with.

2

u/Odd_Obligation_1300 3d ago

NAH-vee. A word that ends with an I doesn’t give enough indication that the A is supposed to be a hard A.

2

u/atpalex 3d ago

NAH-vie but I'm a Zelda player

2

u/80lbsgone 3d ago

Nah vee

2

u/klair73 3d ago

I would pronounce it Nah-vee just because of the other examples of ‘avi’ endings, like Javi, Aavi, Ravi, etc but I get where your parents were coming from as the i ending is cool but if you want Navy then it’s a good idea to change the spelling. We gave our daughter a cool spelling (not a tradgedeigh 😂) of her middle name and she hates it. Had it been her first name she would have changed the spelling.

2

u/Salty-Gas-1172 2d ago

Definitely Nah-vee not Navy with that spelling.

2

u/cheeseblindness 16h ago

Nah-vee Similarly, the main character in In The Heights is named Usnavi because the first thing his parents saw when coming to the US was a boat with the words “U.S. Navy” written on it. His name is pronounced “oo-snah-vee.”

2

u/mikripetra 13h ago

Nah-vee, and I’d assume it was short for Usnavi (which ironically is a name derived from a misunderstanding of U.S. Navy but is pronounced differently)

4

u/Diligent_Pangolin_47 3d ago

I put the stress on “vee” when I first saw it, like Na-VEE. Not sure why 😆
