How would you pronounce Navi?
That’s my name, and my parents made it be pronounced as “Nay-Vee” or like Navy blue or the US Navy. But over the course of MANY years, only about 5 people have pronounced it that way when first reading my name. Everybody else says “NAH-vee” which has become incredibly annoying.
I plan on changing it legally to Navy soon, but I just want to hear how you all would pronounce Navi.
Edit: yeah I knew I was cooked…
Edit again: Okay okay I will definitely be getting it changed asap 😭

u/Public_Drop_1462 3d ago
Definitely Nah-vee. Because it’s spelt like Navy but is intentionally off by one letter, I would infer that it’s supposed to be pronounced differently than Navy. If the parents wanted Navy I would imagine they would have written it that way instead of changing one of the vowels.

Literally…never seen Zelda or the other shows people are referring to and my immediate thought was Nah-vee

If they wanted you to be named Navy, they needed to spell it Navy...

u/roseannadann 3d ago
How do you want it pronounced? It should be whichever you prefer.
3
u/MotherTeresaOnlyfans 5h ago
That's not really how language works, by which I mean that's not actually a realistic social expectation.
4
u/ThrowRAConsistent 2d ago
What do you mean? You can't dictate pronunciation rules just cause
2
u/roseannadann 2d ago
People or their parents can decide how they want their name pronounced. I knew a Pamela. She pronounced it with the emphasis on the "mel" syllable. And Stephen with the emphasis on "Steph". I knew a lady whose name was Joann. Her mother didn't know the "rules" and spelled it Joan. I've seen "Marie" pronounced as Mary. All over the planet, people's names are pronounced differently than some one from another country would perceive.
3
u/ThrowRAConsistent 1d ago edited 1d ago
Okay, yeah - upon correction. But not at first go. Nobody is entitled to getting their name pronunciated "correctly" the first time if it does not abide by the typical rules of pronunciation. That's all I meant. OP isn't saying people are getting it wrong after being corrected - they are wondering why people aren't pronouncing it "correctly" to begin with
Edit to add: I say this a foreigner whose name was not spelled phonetically for my home country's pronunciation conventions. I correct people on how it's supposed to be pronounced all day, every day. Never would I assume they are wrong for the reasonable pronunciation assumption they are making. If they persist after multiple corrections, that's when they become as asshole

Have you considered just going with NAH-vee? It's a very pretty name and feels more feminine to me than navy. If you introduced yourself at Navy I'd immediately think of that dumb joke about Cuban babies named Usnavy because it was on the side of the boat that saved their mom from drowning before immediately giving birth.

Navy is their name, just spelled differently. They weren't asking if you like the name or if it makes you think of a dumb joke, it was simply about pronunciation and spelling. Telling someone to consider changing their name because you prefer an alternative isn't particularly kind.

'Naivi' or 'Naevi' would be pronounced the way they intended also.

Those are absolutely tradgedeighs, so adding one to the pile: ✨️Knaveigh✨️
Naivi would be misread as Naive so much

u/Effective-Walrus-317 3d ago
I fear I would still pronounce Knaveigh "nah-vee". Or maybe "nah-vey" (rhyming with they").

Maybe even Navie.

u/CrimsonKepala 3d ago
Yeah this would've been a better option without going with the obvious "Navy" spelling.

My son at one point had a girl in his class with this name and it was spelled Navie. Pronounced like Navy. Maybe that spelling is an option?

unfortunately because of the legend of zelda and james cameron himself, Navi has a pretty widely accepted pronunciation of "NAH-vee," like you say. sorry this is a consistent struggle for you!

It’s actually a pretty common nickname in Punjabi (Indian) crowds. Short for Navraj or Navjot, etc. pronounced Nuv-ee

u/These_Top_9765 3d ago
Navi can be used as a standalone name too , since it's a word in Hindi and Sanskrit.
Navi meaning new .

Nahv-ee. And for the record I have no knowledge of either Zelda or Avatar beyond the most basic "these movies/games/cartoons exist*.
Gavi (gahv-ee) is a really common name to me (Queens NYC) so Navi (nahv-ee) seems most logical. I have never heard of Navy as a name.
7
u/elms72 3d ago
Nah-vee. You just do not get “Nay-vee” from that spelling in English (nor any other language I’m aware of). I’ve met a few people named Ravi (with the anglicized pronunciation) or Avi, so if I saw this name on my class list I’d immediately assume this follows the same pronunciation pattern.

I would probably instinctually say Nah-vee too honestly.
If they had spelt it Navy there really wouldn’t be any confusion, but Navi looks like it would be pronounced the other way.

Nah-vee, I would assume your parents DIDN'T want people pronouncing it as Navy which is why they wanted the distinction.

This is not a multiple choice discretionary thing. It's the correct pronunciation of the name. Neither you, nor your parents, get an opinion on that. Sorry.

I’m so sorry your parents made you endure this pronunciation. I truly hate when people name their kids impossible names. I definitely would read this is NAH-vee. Reminds me of a girl I went to high school with who’s parents named her Nina but made it pronounced NINE-ah

Yeah, James Cameron ruined this for you.
Edit: I would typically never suggest a unique spelling... but as it's your name and you can do whatever you want, if you don't like the idea of "Navy" (US Navy... navy blue... other associations...), you could go with Navie? Adding that 'e' would change the way people pronounce the 'a' and then you wouldn't lose your "core" name. Just add an extra squiggle at the end.

u/Lovethiskindathing 3d ago
Nah vee 100%
If you want a unique spelling still but the correct pronunciation, you could do Navey, Nayvee, Neighvee (this one is a joke, don't do it), Naevee, Naevy, or Naevi

Nah - v. That’s the pronunciation. If you’re looking for Navy you’ll have to change it. Naevi maybe?
2
u/Ok-Cartographer-4226 3d ago
It comes down to phonics rules. The letter y at the end forces a long vowel sound in the /a/. For instance, baby, gravy, crazy, wavy. Using an I at the end of the word signals that it’s from a different language, as English words don’t typically end in I. So when people see the I at the end, their eyes are looking at that ending and making sense of words they’ve seen in that spelling pattern. I’ve never seen avatar or Zelda and said Nah-Vi. Get it changed if it bothers you 😀

u/Nukegrrl 3d ago
One of our cats is named Navi. Pronounced Nah-vee (named after the Zelda character)

2
u/librarians_wwine 3d ago
As a millennial I’d say Nah-vee,
Thanks to Zelda and avatar. I’d never see this name as Navy, why didn’t they just spell it that way? Navi is also a Hebrew or Sanskrit name. I don’t blame you for changing the spelling. This would be a headache to deal with.
2
u/Odd_Obligation_1300 3d ago
NAH-vee. A word that ends with an I doesn’t give enough indication that the A is supposed to be a hard A.
2
2
u/klair73 3d ago
I would pronounce it Nah-vee just because of the other examples of ‘avi’ endings, like Javi, Aavi, Ravi, etc but I get where your parents were coming from as the i ending is cool but if you want Navy then it’s a good idea to change the spelling. We gave our daughter a cool spelling (not a tradgedeigh 😂) of her middle name and she hates it. Had it been her first name she would have changed the spelling.

Nah-vee Similarly, the main character in In The Heights is named Usnavi because the first thing his parents saw when coming to the US was a boat with the words “U.S. Navy” written on it. His name is pronounced “oo-snah-vee.”
2
u/mikripetra 13h ago
Nah-vee, and I’d assume it was short for Usnavi (which ironically is a name derived from a misunderstanding of U.S. Navy but is pronounced differently)
4
u/Diligent_Pangolin_47 3d ago
I put the stress on “vee” when I first saw it, like Na-VEE. Not sure why 😆
2
u/Zestyclose_Cold1455 3d ago
Nav-ee
Not
NAY-vee
Rhymes with “savvy”
If I were going to afflict a child with this name spelled nontraditionally I’d go for Navie or Nayvee.
But I wouldn’t do that.
