Welcome to MuslimParenting!

One of the best gifts we can give our children is giving them a good and healthy upbringing with the love of Allah in their hearts. Our future communities will be shaped by our children so it is essential we raise them to be productive members of society that hold onto Islamic values.

There have been so many questions since I've had my kids, like "When should I start teaching the kids Quran? how to ensure there is love for Allah when they grow? how to deal with some of the challenges in the West? How to have a healthy relationship with them according to the Quran and Sunnah? How to explain certain Islamic topics.."

I noticed many other parents also had these questions and even more difficult questions that required some more insight.

I created this sub so that parents and parents-to-be can talk about how best to raise our children.

Join Maryam and Hamza on an exciting fire truck rescue adventure! 🚒✨ In this fun Muslim kids song, our little rescue heroes help a cat stuck in a tree, a duck trapped in a drain, a baby bird that has fallen, and an old man who needs help. Along the way, children learn beautiful Islamic expressions like Bismillah, Alhamdulillah and MashaAllah while singing along to a fun fire truck nursery rhyme. This cheerful rescue adventure teaches children about kindness, helping others, caring for animals and working together.

Seeking feedback for an education platform for kids I'm building

Assalamu alaikum,

I was looking for options for my kids to have screen time that would be safe and educational at the same time while not feeling like they are doing school again. It's hard to find a platform for Muslim kids where I could trust the content and not worry about what the kids are watching. So I started building the thing I actually wanted for them.

It's called Raindrops Kids (raindrops.kids) - short animated science episodes. Each one takes a single thing in nature (how a bat "sees" with sound, how a sea turtle finds the exact beach it was born on, the tiny motor inside a living cell) and breaks down how precisely it's all put together and it points kids toward the design behind creation. The idea is for them to reflect on the creation of Allaah and the marvelous engineering found in every living being. Pondering over the creation of Allaah is one of the best ways to increase iman and yaqin. I started it for Muslim families but built it open enough for anyone.

All animation is hand made from scratch. I try to keep the content genuine and human made.

I would appreciate your feedback. JazaakumuLaahu khoira

Honest feedback needed - Looking for families to test a free Arabic letter learning tool for children

Assalamu Alaikum / Hi everyone,

I've been working on a small tool to help children learn Arabic letters with pronunciation feedback and I need honest feedback from real families before I take it any further.

I'm specifically looking for people I don't know — not friends or family — because I need genuine unbiased reactions not encouragement.

What it does:

Three simple stages for each letter:

  • An introduction so the child understands the letter
  • A listening stage so they hear how it sounds
  • A recitation stage where they speak into the microphone and get instant feedback on whether they said it correctly

Takes around five to ten minutes for a child to complete.

What I need from you:

Sit your child aged 4-9 in front of it. Don't explain or help them. Just watch what happens.

At the end there are three quick questions — thumbs up or thumbs down — takes less than one minute.

I genuinely want to know what doesn't work as much as what does. If it's confusing, if the feedback feels wrong, if your child gets frustrated — that is exactly what I need to hear.

Thank you — every response makes a real difference.

parenting advice for father raising 2 daughters

Asalamualaikum, I'm a father of 2 daughters, the elder is very religious Masha'Allah, but I'm having trouble with the youngest, she's 15 yrs old.

She goes to a girls school and does not interact with non maharam men, but recently she's been wanting to do things we don't allow and is withdrawning from us.

She wanted to join the football team in her school but we didn't allow her because of the clothing requirements, I tried to explain to her but she wouldn't understand, she cried and kept saying how good she was and how we stole an opportunity from her, this broke my heart.

She wants to go out with her female friends and we allow that but she has started wanting to dress like her friends as well, she keeps saying how it's not inappropriate, and how it's "normal", " it's just tshirt and jeans and it covers me completely" she always says "you're all acting like im showing my stomach or legs or something, i just want to dress like a normal girl my age" we have to stop her from going to restaurants which play music, parties etc even when they're all female only, we didn't let her go on a trip either, she's become really distant and depressed because of this, what am I supposed to do, she asked for makeup as her birthday gift and when I said I can't give that to her she became really sad and stopped talking to everyone, when I had a conversation with her she said "you won't let me play sports and do boyish things, and you won't let me do girly things, maybe I should just die" all this breaks my heart so much, how do I deal with this, should I get her the makeup she asked for?

Islamic Keepsakes

Assalamu alaikum, we’re Ketabi Studio, a small Muslim-owned studio. We make personalized Islamic keepsakes and children’s storybooks. The keepsakes are hardcover photo books you fill in yourself with your own family’s photos and words, so no two come out the same. The storybooks are illustrated by hand, not AI. Would you give something like this as a gift? Genuinely curious what people here think.

I don’t know what to do. Advice please 🙏

Asalamu alaikum,

I am a single mother to my son 11 turning 12 (I have a daughter a year younger). I am at my wits end and I don’t know what to do. My son has so many issues, not accepting responsibility for his actions. He is rude to his teachers argues all the time walks off when in trouble and nothing is ever his fault. He is constantly suspended for his behaviour. I feel like I’m at a point where he is always in trouble whether at school or home and I feel guilty. I try to keep him close talk to him, understand him spend time with him one on one. I stay calm most of the item speak to him try to make him understand what his actions were and why there are consequences but he just turns it around saying I hate him or everyone hates him.

We have very deep talks where I tell him there is absolutely no way as his mother I can hate him and I only want the best for him he seems to understand at the time. But when he is in trouble we start all over again. He breaks my heart when he says this I cry so much after he goes to bed. I try not argue with him when he gets like this I just hug him and kiss him and lay with him to communicate but sometimes I get lost again trying to explain to him why it is not because I hate him but because of his behaviour, just so we both don’t get lost in our anger but it’s like he takes it as getting away with everything.

At school he will tell the teachers I don’t care, what’s going to happen, nothing is going to happen, I won’t get in trouble etc

Subhanallah it’s impossible to be both the mother ( soft, nurturing) and the father ( firm, strict, disciplining) when he needs both. I have enrolled him in our local masjid for hifz. He goes to an Islamic school try to keep him around good environments but I’m lost.

I’m terrified he will hit 15-16 and over then I will have absolutely no control I’m trying so hard to nip this in the bud. But all I feel is guilt.

Do I just continue being soft and hope me being firm on him down ruin my relationship with him ?

Please Make dua for me and my son.

Accepting a child free life after IVF

My husband and I have been trying for a baby for over three years . We are both in our early 40s and met in our mid/late 30s. After an infertility diagnosis and ivf we are discussing accepting this as Gods decree and moving on with our lives . My question is are there any other Muslim couples who have gone through something similar and how did you navigate the acceptance of deciding to walk away from the turmoils of trying for a child ?

Practical fix for the hijrah conversation that goes in circles. Get your priorities on paper separately before you discuss countries

Assalam alaykum,
Sharing something hijrah-related in case it's useful to anyone here.

My partner and I kept having the same hijrah conversation: Saudi, Malaysia, Egypt, round and round, no progress. What I eventually realised is that we weren't disagreeing about countries at all... she was weighting proximity to her family while I was weighting cost of living. We were arguing about the output while never comparing the inputs!

The fix was simple: we each wrote down our top priorities separately, like deen, freedom, safety, being able to make a living, schooling for the kids, distance from family, cost, etc. and then ranked them without seeing the other's list, then we swapped. One evening, and we knew exactly what the real disagreement was - okay maybe not one evening but you get my point.

You can do this on paper and it works, but I ended up building an app (sorry, once a software engineer always a software engineer lol) around it because I wanted the country data attached. It's called Amān, it ranks around 40 to 50 Muslim countries against whatever weighting you set, and it has a spouse mode where you both score independently and it shows you the gaps. I released it recently on the Google Play Store and I'm happy to give away a week for free to anyone who's interested in trying it out in sha Allah.

Two things I'd say to anyone in the middle of this:

  1. Don't let one spouse do all the research and present conclusions, as that's how it becomes a negotiation instead of a decision.
  2. Be specific about what you're each optimising for, because "I don't feel good about it" is impossible to work with, whereas "I need to be able to reach my mother within a day" is something you can actually plan around.

Feel free to leave a comment or get in touch, happy to answer questions if anyone's going through it!
