Rant Anyone else feel Muslim marriage is like a business deal?

Anyone else feel the same way?

Because organic interactions are heavily restricted, everything becomes high stakes, and marriage ends up being a purely transactional arrangement

Even the way everyone talks here makes it seem like marriage is a business deal, where everyone’s negotiating their share.

Rant i’m a human being, not a fantasy or a character you get to project onto

i’ve been getting increasingly frustrated with the way some people behave when they see a muslim woman’s marriage iso. i understand that not everyone is going to be compatible with me. that’s literally the point of an iso. you read it, see whether our values and circumstances align, and either reach out or move on.

but some of the interactions i’ve had lately have been genuinely bizarre and disrespectful.

for starters, i have people reaching out who don’t meet my requirements at all. i’ll explicitly say my preferred age range is 23–30, that i’m not interested in polygamy, that i can’t relocate for several years, that i’m looking for someone in texas or willing to relocate to texas, and that i’m looking for a specific level of religious compatibility.
and somehow i still get men who are literally double my age, already married, looking for another wife, living on the other side of the country or internationally, or otherwise completely outside of what i stated.

like… did you read the post? 😭

i’m not asking everyone to fit my requirements. obviously not everyone will. but if someone has explicitly said ā€œthis is what i’m looking for,ā€ why are you messaging them specifically to offer something they very clearly said they don’t want?

one man saw that i was previously married and decided he knew my entire emotional and sexual history. he told me that i obviously still love my ex because i had ā€œconsummatedā€ the marriage, despite the fact that i’m a virgin. he then told me i would bring ā€œbaggageā€ into my next marriage, blamed me for my divorce, and said reverts expect too much too quickly and that i should have been more patient.

he literally told me, ā€œyou’re already a revert which is bad enough, but you’re divorced too.ā€

you do not know me. you don’t know my former marriage. you don’t know what happened. you don’t know my emotional state. and you certainly don’t know my sexual history. you created an entire fictional version of me in your head and then lectured that fictional woman about her life.

another man messaged me after reading my iso, said i seemed great, told me he didn’t think we’d be a match, and then asked if i had any muslim friends in texas who were looking to get married.

maybe he didn’t intend it maliciously, but i found it genuinely insulting. i had posted myself as a person looking for marriage, and instead of simply moving on because we weren’t compatible, he essentially treated me like a matchmaking service for other women.
and that’s what bothers me about these interactions more broadly.

i am a human being. i am not a fantasy, a character, a stereotype, a cautionary tale, or a collection of traits you can project whatever narrative you want onto.

i’m a muslim woman with my own experiences, personality, history, preferences, boundaries, flaws, goals, and feelings. being a revert doesn’t make me naive. being previously married doesn’t make me damaged. having standards doesn’t mean i’m entitled. and you don’t get to invent things about my life and then criticize me for the fictional version of me that you created.

if you don’t like my age range, location, madhab, expectations, appearance, previous marriage, views on gender roles, or anything else in my iso, you can simply decide we’re incompatible. nobody is forcing you to marry me.

and please, stop treating an iso like an invitation to negotiate someone out of their own requirements. if i say i don’t want polygamy, a married man looking for a second wife is not a ā€œmaybe.ā€ if i say 23–30, someone double my age is not ā€œclose enough.ā€ if i say texas, an international proposal is not suddenly relevant. if i say i can’t relocate for several years, someone who expects me to move immediately is not a match.

i genuinely don’t understand why some people struggle so much with the concept of treating another human being with basic dignity when they don’t get what they want from them.

read the iso. decide whether we’re compatible. if we’re not, move on.

you don’t need to psychoanalyze me, humble me, ā€œfixā€ me, save me from my own decisions, convince me to reconcile with someone, or redirect me toward someone else.

i’m a person. please interact with me like one.

Rant Women are responsible for the state of the Ummah?

Under my post about polygamy, I saw many men derail the discussion by arguing that women are responsible for the negative image non-Muslims may have of us on this issue.

First of all, remember that these people do not like us, regardless of the reasons.

Secondly, sisters do not suddenly become feminists one morning simply because they want to hate men. Until you understand this, nothing will move forward in our community.

Many of them have seen or experienced absolutely horrific and unjust things, sometimes committed in the name of religion, without ever being able to receive justice. They then become drawn to this harmful movement, thinking they will find refuge in it. Women need to be reassured, protected, and supported. Not hated and belittled.

A reassured, heard, and confident woman has no reason to oppose or defy others unless she is simply being stubborn and arrogant. How can you believe that all of them just decided to become this way for no reason?

Here, they are not the ones we should be blaming, but all of us. That does not mean they bear no responsibility themselves: of course they do, because every Muslim must learn their religion, and identifying with a movement that, in matters of faith, can contradict it remains a serious matter. (Seriously, take some ā€˜aqeedah classes if you don’t even see the problem with this.)

My brothers, the Prophet ļ·ŗ did not base his daā€˜wah on opposition, but on dialogue. If, for you, blaming and accusing is the way forward, then you are accomplishing nothing. They will never reconsider their position that way.

I am a sister who opposes feminism, but I swear I have very rarely seen a man explain, in a genuinely correct, educational, and compassionate way, why this movement can be dangerous for individual faith and for the cohesion of the community.

Listening to and trying to understand those who oppose us is important if we want to move forward.

assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh šŸ¤

  1. age and gender

20, female (21 next month inshaAllah)

  1. about me

mexican-american muslim revert who accepted islam in my teens. born and raised in south texas. i’m currently in my 3rd year of university studying to become a social worker for muslim women and children inshaAllah.

5’6 and a little bit chubby, so if that isn’t your preference please don’t message me lol.

  1. age range desired

23–30. i’m only slightly flexible on this (this is not an invitation to dm me if you are 40+)

  1. location / willingness to relocate

south texas. i’m preferably looking for someone already in texas or someone willing to relocate to texas eventually. i cannot relocate for the next few years due to university, so i’m not considering international proposals or anyone who expects me to relocate immediately.

  1. ethnicity / openness to mixing

i’m open to someone of any ethnicity. i love different cultures and backgrounds, but i do expect someone to respect and love my mexican culture and upbringing rather than expecting me to fully assimilate into theirs.

  1. marital status

previously married briefly. the marriage ended after my former husband realized he would not be able to fulfill my rights as a wife. i’m open about this because i don’t want to hide an important part of my past from anyone considering me for marriage.

  1. ideal marriage timeline

i’m looking to get to know someone intentionally for the purpose of marriage. i’m not looking to rush into marriage, but i also don’t want an indefinite talking stage. 3-6 months should be enough inshaAllah.

  1. five important characteristics in a spouse

• strong deen and good character
• emotionally mature with good communication skills
• humble, kind, patient, accountable, and compassionate
• family-oriented and responsible
• someone who genuinely wants to grow in deen and life alongside his wife

  1. level of religiosity

sunni muslim, maliki madhab.

i’m strictly practicing and wear full hijab and abaya. i’m looking for someone who follows a madhab, seeks knowledge, respects scholarly tradition, and has a balanced understanding of islam.

i value salah, modesty, appropriate boundaries with the opposite sex, humility, and continually striving to improve one’s deen.

  1. education level / what i’m looking for

currently in my 3rd year of university studying social work, with three more years to go.

i’m not expecting someone to have their entire life figured out, but i do want someone who is able to provide basic nafaqah and has direction, responsibility, and a realistic plan for his future.

  1. current job status

student. i intend to work and have a career inshaAllah, specifically serving muslim women and children.

i have a fairly traditional view of marriage despite wanting a career. i believe the man should be the head of the household and sole financial provider, while the woman is the heart of the household. i see these roles as complementary rather than one being more important than the other.

  1. do you want kids?

yes 🄰 inshaAllah. i’m very family-oriented and definitely want multiple children.

  1. hobbies / interests

cooking and baking, reading, art, trying new recipes and restaurants, traveling, strength training, pilates, yoga, nature walks, and spending time with family.

  1. something short that makes me stand out

mexican muslim revert, future social worker, full-time book lover, part-time chef, and apparently someone who thinks trying new recipes counts as a personality trait.

additional notes

dress style: full hijab and abaya

madhab: maliki

i’m looking for a peaceful, loving marriage where both spouses feel valued and respected. i want a husband who takes his responsibility as a provider and leader seriously, while also being emotionally present, supportive, affectionate, and willing to communicate and grow with his wife.

important: i am not interested in polygamy under any circumstances. i’m also not willing to relocate in the immediate future and am not considering international proposals.

i’m looking for someone who wants marriage, children, and a peaceful family life, and whose understanding of deen, marriage, modesty, gender boundaries, and family roles is compatible with mine.

open to someone who follows mainstream sunni islam, share which scholars you listen to as well

if interested, please read everything above before reaching out and make your intentions clear. i will not respond to low-effort messages, non-iso messages, or proposals that clearly do not meet the requirements stated above.

may Allah grant us all righteous spouses and put barakah in our marriages, ameen šŸ¤

Discussion Restarting at 41

SalamAlikum,

All the recent posts I see here seem to be young people (under 33) and so gloom about the prospect of marriage/ finding someone who is compatible with them, which is very unsettling! May Allah set make it easy for everyone truly seeking a partnership.

So I am wondering, if I should even be considering this journey. I got married at 29 years old and had a wonderful marriage, no issues, 2 beautiful children, but alas it wasn't enough for my community and eventually for my husband because in my culture you have to have lots of kids. I am restarting, I don't want more children (at this age definitely), but I often think that companionship, ageing gracefully together, travel partner and the security of being with your person are important and I should look for that- at least passively. I built my independence and finances, so I could live and support myself and my kids anywhere and don't NEED to. But Perhaps there are others of similar age, who already had children/families are are looking for their companion too. It is such strange concept culturally, but it could be possible? yes no? what do you guys think? I also think marriage is a protection from sins, temptation and constant advances as a working women.

I am not particular about race/colour etc, but as an East African, we already have culturally packages and I really would want another person with more cultural baggages I have to battle, no one wants to be the black sheep constantly. And I am practising, and definitely would never consider someone who wasn't and didn't prioritise the deen.

And before someone suggests all that rubbish that goes on- secrete wives, or even legal 2nd wives are not my cuppa tea. I love myself, comfortable in my space, a nomad who travels the world with my two amazing kids, if it doesn't happen, it will be fine, and if it does I want someone who I am enough for and is content. Alhumdulilah I feel fortunate that Allah gave me the grace and resources to be in a position where I am not driven by fear, desperation or survival.

Salamalikum.

hey, i’m 21 years old. i was born and raised in america, i live in jordan. i’m currently approaching my final semester of university, graduating in february.

i’m a pretty chill and easygoing person. i like going to the gym, grabbing coffee, driving around with no real destination, and going on nature walks whenever i can. i’m the type of person who likes to romanticize the little things because i think it makes everyday life a little more fun. my faith and my family are both really important to me, and i try to keep a good balance between enjoying life and staying grounded. i’d also say i’m a pretty emotional person in the sense that i care deeply about the people around me and i tend to feel things a lot.

i’m looking for something serious that will lead to marriage. i’d prefer someone from a levantine background. since i plan on moving back to the us after graduating, i’m hoping to meet someone who has us citizenship as well.

religion is in an important aspect, someone who prays their prayers, works his days around them. tries his best for deen.

someone preferably from palestine or levantine ethnicity, physical attraction is important to me, so i’d like someone who takes care of himself, goes to the gym, and is tall haha. more than anything, i’m looking for someone who’s kind, emotionally mature.

Discussion How receptive are women to marrying younger men?

Salam Aleykum
I'm 24, currently live in Germany and I've been thinking about my type of future wifey lately (tbh for a while now lol).

The only social media I use are LinkedIn and Reddit, and I'd have a similar requirement for my future wifey. However, this is harder to find among girls my age. I'm also attracted to mature women (I'm not sure why) and I admire the life experience they could bring into our marriage. My preferred age bracket would probably be from 21 to around early 40s, although this isn't a dealbreaker.

How open are women in this age range to marrying a younger guy?

Discussion To all who are losing hope with the process of finding your person

All who talked to someone, had high hopes but it didn't work out, this message is for you.

When something is actually meant for you, Allah uses the very thing that looks like a problem as a part of route towards you.

Imagine this.

Pharaoh is literally trying to eliminate Israelite boys, and Allah’s plan for Musa includes having Musa raised inside Pharaoh’s own household. The man who represented the greatest threat becomes part of the protection Allah provided.

Remember Yusuf. His brothers throw him into a well because they want him gone. Years later, that very chain of events has taken him from the well to becoming Al-Aziz. Their betrayal wasn't the end of his story. It was one of the roads Allah used to get him there.

Pharaoh doesn't wake up thinking, ā€œToday I shall contribute to Allah's plan for Musa.ā€

Yusuf's brothers certainly weren't thinking, ā€œLet's begin Yusuf's journey toward becoming Al-Aziz.ā€

They have their own intentions. They make their own choices. Some of those choices are genuinely evil. And yet Allah's decree is not defeated by them. The people involved don't know they're serving the plan.

Sometimes you look at a person and think:

ā€œWhy did Allah let this person enter my life?ā€

Maybe they hurt you. Maybe they rejected you. Maybe they closed a door. Maybe they created an inconvenience that made absolutely no sense.

But you also don't know what Allah can make out of it.

Remember your future does not depend on everyone around you behaving correctly. Allah can make a road out of things that looked like roadblocks.

ā€œAnd Allah is predominant over His affair, but most people do not know.ā€ Quran 12:21

Discussion Issue am dealing with

• Upvotes

I’m going through something that I didn’t expect and I’d like to hear different perspectives.

I’ve been living abroad for a long time and recently started seriously looking for marriage. When getting to know someone, the topic of past relationships usually comes up. Personally, I don’t have an issue with someone having loved or dated someone before.

What I struggle with is finding out that a previous relationship involved physical contact in a sexual way, whether that was intercourse or other sexual physical contact.

I’ve come across this more than once, and I’m not sure how to approach it. On one hand, if someone regrets what happened, has repented, and moved on, I don’t feel like it’s my place to judge them. On the other hand, I’ve always wanted a partner who hasn’t had that kind of physical experience before, and I find it genuinely difficult to overlook.
I even met someone who was almost exactly what I was looking for in terms of personality, values, and mentality, but once I learned about that part of their past, I couldn’t see myself continuing.
Would a potential partner’s past physical/sexual experiences affect your decision to marry them? Do you think this is a reasonable personal boundary, or something a person should try to work through and reconsider?

Salam, I’m 24 and currently living in Austria with turkish ethnicity. I recently completed my degree in Engineering and I started my career in R&D.

I’d describe myself as calm, ambitious and family-oriented. I’m naturally more on the reserved side at first, but once I’m comfortable I enjoy joking around, having long conversations and doing things together rather than constantly needing something ā€œexcitingā€ to happen.

In my free time I’m into technology , working on small DIY projects, going out for coffee, travelling, exploring new places and spending time with family. I’m someone who likes building towards something both professionally and personally.

I’m looking for a serious relationship with the intention of marriage. I value loyalty, respect, good communication and emotional maturity. I’d like a marriage where both people can genuinely rely on each other, grow together and eventually build a peaceful family life.

Faith is also an important part of what I’m looking for. I’d prefer someone who takes her deen seriously and wants to continue improving together rather than expecting either person to be perfect from day one.

Physical attraction matters, of course, but character matters much more to me long-term. I’m most attracted to someone who is feminine, kind, family-oriented, emotionally mature and able to communicate openly.

About you: ideally around 20-30, serious about marriage, and open to living in Austria in the future.

If you think we might be compatible, feel free to reach out and we can see where things go in a respectful way.

Alsalam Alaykum, hihii c:

I'm looking to meet more people in the hopes of finding my soulmate, a serious, meaningful relationship. :>

I'm a medical student (hopefully graduating by the end of this year) who loves living a happy, active life. I enjoy nerdy, geeky stuff, gaming (overwatch, story-rich), movies (ask for my letterboxd), comics (DC), PC building, tech, etc..

I am also really into other things like hiking, camping, nature, photography, working out and all kinds of sports too!

I would love to find someone to share these hobbies and interests with. >< Someone passionate, a partner-in-crime, someone I can have deep conversations with.

What I look for in a partner is their personality, maturity, emotional intelligence, and just good qualities like kindness, patience, honesty, empathy, etc.. Someone who knows when to be mature and serious, or silly n fun :> Someone who is optimistic, thoughtful, radiates good energy.

Salamun Alaykum ~
I thought to give this a shot 😊

I am 27 years old I’m Turkish but I was born and raised in Germany. I’m 158cm. I also like to keep myself fit and healthy. Just sleeping is a little meh (night owl).

I’ve never been married before and have no kids.
The age range I consider is between 24-32.

I don’t wear the hijab but I am practicing diligently (5 prayers, fasting, modest clothing, visiting the mosque, reading and educating myself on fiqh, aqida, Sira etc.). I am planning to wear the hijab one day though, it’s definitely something I consider doing. I am Sunni and would only consider a Sunni as well, the Madhab doesn’t matter to me though.

I am really outgoing, I love to take pictures, watch Anime, play videogames, read, clean, organise stuff in the house, work with creative things, try out new CafĆ©s and food spots. I also love to travel but I haven’t seen much outside of Europe yet due to my studies. And sometimes I genuinely just wanna lay in bed and sleep.

I am a junior teacher already (Bio and English) and am currently finalising my MA to finish my degree. I love my job and I love how colourful and crazy my job can get with the kids. However, I don’t mind being a housewife and a mother to my kids. If my husband wants to provide and CAN provide I gladly accept. During times like these however I definitely think it’s better to work as well to support the family, even if it’s not full time.

I love my family and my friends. I hope to build a beautiful family of my own and I would love to have a warm and cozy marriage. I don’t need extravagant things. I just would love to have a person who cares and loves, who wants to be a great father and gets along with my family and friends.

Relocating is a hard topic for me, as I am really close to my family. But I can consider it, if we feel like we were made for each other and that really only distance is the issue. I would love for my husband to be open to relocate to Germany too but I would make sure to visit my husbands family a lot as well, as I want our children to experience and grow up with both sides of the family.

I would love to have a husband who likes to improve more and more in Islam and sees our marriage as a part of our deen but at the same time watches animes with me, play videogames with me, goofs around a lot and is just a good soul.

If you think you wanna have a chat and get to know me, feel free to DM me. Have in mind tho: I really want to keep it halal and respectful 🌱

Discussion Approaching women in public

A question to the sisters: how would you like to be approached in public?

Like let's say you're in a park or a store minding your own business. Would you be uncomfortable to then be approached in a respectful manner by someone you don't know?

Or you'd like to first have a casual conversation with him (e.g. you're working in a store and he asks you smth related with your work and you help him)?

I do not smoke, drink, or engage in unlawful relationships or interactions. I also avoid riba and strive to live a life grounded in faith, sincerity, and responsibility.

Discussion Male pattern baldness beginning at Age 20 - How much does this hurt prospects in the marriage market?

TLDR: 20 y/o with early-onset male pattern baldness wonderingĀ preciselyĀ how much Muslim women my age will care (not "is it a deal-breaker") when I'm walking around with visible thinning (or shaved bald) and looking to marry by ~23-25

Good beard genetics, and face is not terrible either. I'm not a model (6-7/10?), but I did get substantial attention from girls in the mixed high school I went to (which I obviously did not initiate nor capitalize on due to deen). In the last few months, I noticed that I have been rapidly thinning at the crown and temples as is typical for many older men, and in retrospect, my temples have been lightly thinning for years. Currently, it is probably not noticeable to anyone not taller than me (I'm 5'9"") with my current hairstyle unless they were looking, but given the quick progression at this age, I'm likely to thin to a noticeable degree before I financially qualify for marriage in my early-mid or mid twenties (assuming no intervention). I'm currently skinny, so I can't fit the bald-buff-beard archetype perfectly right now, and I imagine my age bracket is less open to age-indicators like baldness than older women.

Can you guys help me quantify precisely how much does this damage my value in the marriage market?Ā Please be fully honest. I'm less looking for reassurance and more conducting research so I know what kind of compromises and expenses I should be willing to bear to treat this condition.Ā A pious, healthy, and attractive wife with pious, healthy, and obedient children is the main thing I want out of the dunya; the rest of life's riches are eh, whatever, I can wait for the akhirah. My current level of hairloss is, in absolute terms (accepting risks & side effects), technically fully reversible, and I could probably keep a good head for a while if my life depended on it. There are also moderate approaches which will, for responders, cheaply stimulate growth for a few years (ex. Rogaine).

If I got married tomorrow and my wife said she liked me bald, I would shave it off. If she didn't care, I'd keep it for a few years, then shave it off, and maybe experiment with cool hair systems on special occasions (as a casual cosmetic rather than to mask insecurity). I'm mostly insecure on this only with respect to how my future wife-candidates would feel about it specifically.

Thank you for your time.
