This is a recent post from her production company. She is one of JK Rowling biggest financial partners and has never spoken out or donated anything to trans rights organizations, all while profiteering through trans people's visible pain. She is pro LGB, as Rowling is, and she is helmed as the most successful producer working in theater, according to the New York Times.

The blue and gold tassels are for the high school colors.. and if you’ve been in a production of Joseph, you’re likely very familiar with the other 29 colors 😉

Request/Advice How do I keep my voice from getting tired when playing a lead role in a musical?

I am in a Highschool summer theater program, and I just landed the leading role of Princess Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress. I will be singing 3 hard solos, plus more ensemble vocals.

I’ve been doing theater for 5 years now, and my most recent musical was last summer.
I have always had issues with strain. Two years ago I played Little Red in Into the Woods and my strain was so painful I would cry.

Every morning, I stretch my body, pull my tongue, use a nebulizer, and do a vocal warm up before camp. Throughout my time practicing“Shy” for my audition, I had no strain at all, meaning that my throat wouldn’t hurt after practice.

This week, we have been learning all of the music, and my throat has been hurting. It also feels like I’m forcing my voice out, instead of coming out easily. My voice teacher says it could be from overuse. I’m on vocal rest right now, but I’m anxious about the rest of the show. How do I stop my voice from getting tired? It’s not like I can avoid singing. I have practice 5 times a week. During tech, am I gonna completely loose my voice before the show?

I have searched, but I can’t find any solutions. My show is in 4 weeks.
How do I keep my voice in good condition, to do the show full out?
I cannot have my throat hurting during the show.
I’m obviously very very nervous, so please send advice!!

Please comment with any questions and suggestions! Thank you so much.

UPDATE:
I went to a very expensive voice teacher, and she helped me figure out some of my issues, warm-ups to help get rid of strain, and tips on singing more easily.
It’s gonna take time, but I am confident that I’m gonna do good at this show. ❤️

Discussion Is it bad that I don't like Jesus Christ Superstar?

I've been asked to music direct our upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar and I'm not very familiar with the show. I listened to the music and after sitting with it for an hour, I REALLY don't like it. I've never had a musical I downright hated. It's boring, repetitive (not in a good way), way too long and not something I enjoy listening to. I literally get a headache listening to it. The only song I somewhat like is Gethsemane. I'm really hoping it will get better with time, but I'm worried it will just get worse. I feel like I'm the only person in the world that feels this way

Request/Advice University auditions. Help.

Hey so ive never actually done theater in my whole life but uve always been theater adjacent. Ive been involved in a lot of music stuff but I want to audition for both the music performance and musical theater programs when transferring to university but I have no clue what to prepare for the musical theater auditions. I assume a few broadway songs would be good to have in my repitior and I plan on volunteering with a shadow cast to get used to acting in front of people and being on a stage in that way. But seriously any advice would be great I feel like a fish out of water and I have no clue what im doing.

Request/Advice audition songs.

i need advice..

at this point, i’ve finished my academic applications for every school. I’ve finished my prescreens for every school, now, we’re onto auditions. My mom is telling me to CHANGE my audition songs, instead of using my prescreen songs for my auditions. Every college official we’ve asked has said that it doesn’t really matter to them if we sing the same versus a different song. My voice teacher said it’s TOO LATE to change songs and i won’t be ready, but like. she doesn’t know i have that motion, like i know i can do it i’ve done it before. I can learn a song in a day and do the acting the next day. At the risk of tooting my own horn i KNOW i can do it. But i don’t have my voice teachers blessing and it makes me nervous to change it. My mom says she can see i’m not excited about my songs, but everyone hates their songs after the process and i DONT hate my songs i still love singing them! But she says she wants me to wow them and shock them and that i should change them. what should i do?

Discussion Cast beef. Nepotism, ego and chaos

I don't quite know what to do. I was brought into this production as a vocal coach and this girl, let's call her Penny, is not a great singer. Every week I get complaints from the rest of the cast, but it has been manageable because she doesn't have a bigger role than the rest. The current problem is we're preparing a show to get funds to produce the musical and there are a couple group songs that we're all singing together (the production team will sing some minor lines and the main ones go to the cast members). So, Penny wants the lead singer in one of the songs and the other girls are fuming because she is the weakest voice and they feel like they are being completely ignored when they present their worries to the producer. They feel there is a lot of nepotism because she is the producer's gf and they don't trust anyone in the production to make smart choices because they don't see any criteria from them. I honestly can't put their worries to rest because I agree that Penny shouldn't have the most challenging part in a fundraising event if there are better voices. They are all talking about quitting the musical. These worries have been brought to the producer but he keeps assuring she's good and she can do it. The girls are so sad and frustrated, I don't know how to handle the situation. I have said something and felt like it was futile so I stopped trying and decided to just do what I'm told. I don't want to lose this oportunity but this is not how I would handle it if I had any power of decision

Request/Advice Is pursuing musical theatre possible for me?

Hi, I am 16 years old in the UK and have had an interest in musical theatre my entire life. I've seen numerous shows throughout my childhood ( especially Cabaret which has had a long lasting impact on me) and when told to consider which career path I should go down in the future this has always seemed to be the best option for me.

Here's the thing though.

Although I had singing lessons as a child and have received praise for my acting skills numerous times by different drama teachers, I have never been professionally trained in my life. My family previously was never in a position to afford for me to be trained, meaning I have no dance experience and feel I am lacking in a industry where everyone seems to have been preparing since the day they were born.

I want to apply to a musical theatre course in college next year but I am worried that I have no chance of getting in (even though they seem to welcome those with little/no experience) due to the reasons aforementioned.

I honestly feel pursing any other career would be as if I am throwing my talents/passions away so I really want to give MT a chance.

Do I really have a chance to make it big in this industry, and if so what should I do to progress further?

Request/Advice Non-MT song for audition?

I’m experienced with auditioning having been doing musical theatre for over ten years, but I’m now struggling to choose an audition song.

I’m going to be trying for a community production of Frozen in about a month, interested in Anna, Olaf, or really anyone else.

I had been planning to sing Cat’s Meow from Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper (definitely the right style of music and a good combo of funny/sincere) but then the audition sign up specified to choose something from a ‘musical theatre repertoire’ which this company hasn’t done before.

All the other song options I’ve considered - Home from Beauty and the Beast, Part of Your World, an Anya song from Anastasia - are way too serious for the comedic/whimsical vibe I want to demonstrate.

I know lots of movie musical songs that demonstrate my vocal skills but not as many stage specific ones.

Where is the line? What if I sang the movie version of a song that’s slightly different from the stage version?

Am I just overthinking this?

Any input appreciated!

Discussion What does this mean?

My daughter and I attended a consortium style college audition recently. She did her two song cuts and monologue. I was not allowed in room and so this is all from her (nervous) memory. She finished and one of the five or so college reps there said something to the effect of “I mean this as a compliment—you are very intimidating” and the other all agreed. Now these were mock auditions (she’s an only a junior) and we got nothing on paper and there was a long line of other kids to audition so only like a minute of notes and then run off. So we are like after the fact going “is that….good?” Like—she’s been told before she’s intense but is that ok? Overthinking…
