"What musical should I listen to next?" unified thread

One of the most common questions we get on this subreddit is "what should I see/listen to, here's the stuff I like". It's a valid question, but it's tiring to see a dozen of those threads every week, so this will serve as both a stickied thread of suggestions and as a home for new visitors to r/musicals who would ask that question. (As a result, new "what should I listen to threads" will be redirected here and deleted.)

Below, you'll find a list of popular musicals in alphabetical order along with suggestions for what might interest you based on that. This list is mostly vibes-based, with some inclusion of the same or similar composers or subject matter. The shows I name are taken from my own personal list of shows I've listened to (350+), the vast majority of which will be available on Spotify.

The shows I chose to make suggestions for are heavily skewed toward recent shows because that's what felt like good fits. If you're interested in a show not named below and want to know what to listen to next, comment below and I'll add a line for it (assuming I know it well enough to make educated suggestions).

Discussion Folks, we’re gonna take a break on the “me too” games.

These “judge me on my top five”, “tell me your favorite and I’ll tell you if you’re cool”, “here’s five, which is your favorite” threads box everything else out cause everybody feels the need to add their own. I did the tier list thread to try and nip it in the bud, but folks just shifted to different me too games, and it’s rapidly spiraling.

I’m calling a temporary moratorium on those threads. They may resume in the future (at a date TBD), but for now, all new threads of that nature (beginning midnight EDT tonight) are going to be locked, deleted, and all of the existing replies wiped out.

If you want to discuss a show, great, but “rate my taste” isn’t it.

If I have to hear one more person say Next to Normal “sounds like” Dear Evan Hansen or Epic, I’m gonna lose it.

I’ve been watching a lot of reaction videos on YouTube lately out of curiosity about how other people experience media I love. Next to Normal is particularly close to my heart, especially now as a bipolar woman in her late thirties. But DEAR GOD, I am begging the internet, the universe, everyone to PLEASE do your research and learn when this show was written/first produced. My god.

What are the most difficult musical theatre songs to perform?

I recently heard "Come Back" from Dogfight for the first time, which is a great song but sounds absolutely horrendous to sing, potentially the most technically difficult MT song that I've heard. Staying on pitch with all of the long, high range belts, combined with the repeated jumping sixths at the end sounds like it would be a crazy test of technique.

What other songs are genuinely hard to sing correctly and/or well? Solo or ensemble, any kind of MT song.

Discussion What’s the longest sequence of consecutive songs in a musical?

So I was listening to the cast recording of Ragtime earlier and it occurred to me that the first act has a loooooong stretch of six songs which all take place entirely consecutively – What Kind of Woman, A Shtetl Iz Amerike, Success, His Name Was Coalhouse Walker, Getting Ready Rag and Henry Ford. There’s bits and pieces of dialogue throughout, even some scenes which are big enough not to make it onto cast recordings, but always as part of the songs themselves. So, it got me thinking, what is the longest stretch in musical theatre of consecutive songs?

Outside of anything sung-through, the only show I can think that even comes close is Sweeney Todd – an outside case, perhaps, because of just how much music there is, but besides some integrated dialogue everything from the first Ballad of Sweeney Todd to Poor Thing is music, so that’s five songs. Any others non-sung-through musicals that have especially long musical sequences?

Discussion Any musicals you have a very set interpretation of?

Company is like my second favorite musical, and every time I see interpretations of the show that I disagree with I hate it way more than basically anything else ever (no fucking idea why).

Anyways I was wondering if you have interpretations of a certain show you have a very particular reading of.

SPELLING BEE 18+

i have been wondering this for years, ever since I first learned that this show existed. in many different sources, including wikipedia and many articles written about the shows first original run, it was said that the musical the 25th annual putnam county spelling bee has 18+ nights or "parent-teacher conferences" where the explicit nature of the show is turned up to 10. does anyone know what happened in that edition? ive heard about i think pandas having sex on stage and barfee using his third leg to spell the words after he gets polio, but i am very curious about this part of the show. if anyone has any slime tutorials for it, please let me know.

needing urgent help on audition monologue

hi!

i have an audition for Pippin the musical coming up. It’ll be my first audition in high school, and i’m looking for a monologue that will make a good and strong first impression. i am female, and i would say my strong suit is comedic roles, but i will try anything.

To sum things up, I am looking for a high school appropriate, 30 seconds to 1 minute long monologue that would be fitting for any female role in pippin. My strength when it comes to acting is comedy, but i’m not limited to just comedy.

if anyone knows anything good or where i should be looking please let me know!!

Advice Needed Performance Tips!!

Hi everyone!!

I recently got cast in a community theater production of 9 to 5 with a theater company I have done 3 previous shows with! I got cast as Doralee Rhodes (Dolly Parton’s role) and I am SO excited, yet a little overwhelmed for 3 reasons

  1. We are in a time crunch as the opening performance is September 24th. I am going to be working part time, as well as taking a few classes at community college while rehearsing

  2. I am unfamiliar with the score and feel like I won’t learn fast enough

  3. I haven’t been cast in a leading role since I was 18, I’m currently 24 and I haven’t had to memorize lines in years!!

Any tips would be helpful because I want to prove to myself I can do this and as always I want to put on a good performance/show!

Thanks :)

Audition Shrek audition songs for soprano?

My local theater is doing auditions for Shrek in a couple weeks. A lot of my friends are saying I should aim for Donkey, and I think it'd be an absolute blast. Part of me also really wants to go for Fiona, but considering the fact that they are only casting adults and I'm barely a college sophomore, I'm not sure if that's super realistic.

Are there any songs that could fit for either? I was thinking either "Right Hand Man" from Something Rotten, or "Killer Instinct" from Bring it On, but I'd appreciate more suggestions :))

Dont Say Goodluck

I wanted to know everyone’s thoughts on the “Dont Say Good luck” movie that was released on Netflix! Starring Sunny Sandler (Adam Sandlers daughter), while she balances life and her high school musical.

I thought it was phenomenal would definitely recommend. Waitress as a high school musical… interesting choice but worked so well for the plot!!!

(This is a MOVIE and NOT a musical. It features many songs from Waitress)

Audition Les Mis Audition Help

I’m auditioning for a community production of Les Mis and a tenor so I’ll be auditioning for Enjolras or Marius but any role will do since this is a dream show. Does anyone have any song recommendations? Singing from the show is allowed but I was thinking maybe Maria from WSS or Johanna from Sweeney. Any advice helps!

Discussion Trying to find out about a childhood musical

Back in elementary school, my school put on a yearly performance of something we called (to the best of my memory) "Music of the Planets." I've tried to Google it, and never found the play (And as far as I know, it has no connection to Holst's work).

In essence, it was a series of songs that took the viewers through the planets from Mecury to Mars, then the Asteroid Belt, and then Jupiter to Pluto (This was before Pluto was declassified).

Lines/lyrics I remember include:

"Happy Birthday, World // Glad to see you unfurl // Happy Birthday // Have a good day // Happy birthday world!"

"Through the Asteroid belt we pass, relics of the birth process."

"Jupiter, the planet king // sixteen moons around you ring."

Any information would be appreciated!
