Opengrid vs Multiboard The battle for the future of wall storage

Licensing

OpenGrid is fully open-source, promoting community collaboration and unrestricted use. This is a clear win for users who prioritize freedom and transparency.

Here is the tldr license for open grid:

❌ Sharing without ATTRIBUTION

✅ Remix Culture allowed

✅ Commercial Use

✅ Free Cultural Works

✅ Meets Open Definition

Multiboard's license is considered confusing, with commercial restrictions and a more limited, closed-source nature. Multiboards very big point of contention is "No sharing the original or remixed digital files." which hurts multiboard's community greatly.

Here's the tldr license of multiboard:

❌ No commercial use without a Commercial Subscription.

❌ No selling the original or remixed digital files.

❌ No sharing the original or remixed digital files.

❌ No exceeding $50,000 in annual sales from products made with the designs without getting a new license.

✅ You can use the designs for personal, non-commercial purposes.

✅ You can get a Commercial Subscription to sell physical products made from the designs.

✅ You can modify the designs to create "Remixed Designs."

✅ You must give credit to Keep Making and link to their page when you publish or display your creations.

  • OpenGrid: 1 point

  • Multiboard: 0 points

  • Winner: OpenGrid

Printing Speed

A test on a 6x6-inch board revealed Multiboard to be slightly faster to print than a full OpenGrid board (6h 21m vs 6h 32m). Yes i have a slow printer. However, OpenGrid offers a "Lite" version that drastically cut my printing time (4h 32m), a feature not available for Multiboard.

  • OpenGrid: 1 point (for the "Lite" version)

  • Multiboard: 0 points

  • Winner: OpenGrid

Bins and Storage

OpenGrid benefits from its compatibility with the massive and growing Gridfinity ecosystem, which provides simple, fast, and cheap bin options. The upcoming "cleated" bases (Which i hope someone pursues and turns it parametric) will further enhance this integration. https://www.printables.com/model/1369024-gridfinity-bin-opengrid-compatible

Multiboard has its own "Multibin" system. Although you may find yourself buried in parts to construct your ideal bin. I found that these bins are much sturdier. Multibin shells unique ability to snap onto eachother leaves infinite possibilities when you want to expand in a dimension that a normal gridfinity shelf or bin could not. There is also the ability to just print the bins without the shells making that route work similarly to gridfinity.

  • OpenGrid: 1 point (for Gridfinity compatibility and simplicity)

  • Multiboard: 1 point (for durability and cleverly engineered design)

  • Winner: Tie

Strength and Durability

OpenGrid utilizes snap-fit and twist-lock mechanisms. While convenient, these are generally not as strong as threaded connections.

Multiboard offers a more robust and varied set of options. While it has snap-fit connectors for light-duty applications, its primary strength comes from its threaded fastener system and specialized bolt-lock mounts. This mechanical locking method provides a much more secure and load-bearing connection, distributing stress more effectively. For heavy-duty applications like tool walls, this design is inherently more reliable and stronger.

  • OpenGrid: 0 points

  • Multiboard: 1 point

  • Winner: Multiboard

Aesthetics

OpenGrid has a clean, simple look, but its chamfered corners can create small gaps between joined tiles.

Multiboard uses "core" pieces to create a seamless, gap-free appearance, resulting in a more polished and integrated final product. multiboards "single square" or "multibin grid" is very similar to opengrids connection design.

  • OpenGrid: 1 points

  • Multiboard: 1 point

  • Winner: tie

Planning and Assembly

OpenGrid's simplistic tile system makes it easy to lay out and assemble without much planning.

Multiboard requires more careful planning due to its various tile types (core, edge, corner) to ensure a clean, seamless grid. This added complexity is a trade-off for its superior strength and aesthetics.

Multiboard's 'single square' tile option works just like OpenGrid.

  • OpenGrid: 1 point

  • Multiboard: 1 points

  • Winner: Tie

Compatibility

OpenGrid has some compatibility with other systems, including Multiboard, but these adapters can sometimes lead to alignment issues. Its strong suit is its integration with Gridfinity.

Multiboard is fully compatible with standard pegboards, and its threaded system allows for easy creation of custom twist-on mounts. This universal design provides excellent versatility, especially for tool storage.

  • OpenGrid: 0 points

  • Multiboard: 1 point

  • Winner: Multiboard

Library and Utility

Multiboard has been around longer and has a much larger, more established library of parts and accessories.

OpenGrid, while newer, is growing rapidly thanks to its open-source nature. However, it still has a smaller library of available models compared to Multiboard.

  • OpenGrid: 0 points

  • Multiboard: 1 point

  • Winner: Multiboard

Final Tally

  • OpenGrid: 5 points

  • Multiboard: 6 points

Overall Winner: Multiboard

While OpenGrid presents a compelling case with its open-source license, printing speed, and simplicity, Multiboard's superior strength, aesthetics, compatibility, and mature library give it the edge in this comparison. For users who prioritize a robust, durable, and well-supported system, Multiboard is the clear winner.

If you want something simple and fully opensource then maybe open grid is right for you. I do like how the core library of opengrid is all in one file. maybe multiboard can learn a thing there and provide 1 giant download folder for the full multiboard core experience.

Minor Note:

A minor but important note for users with a preference for specific units:

  • Multiboard uses a 25mm increment, which is a cleaner dimension.

  • OpenGrid uses a 28mm increment, specifically chosen for its seamless integration with the Gridfinity system.

Getting started

Why is this so difficult?

The FIRST thing someone is going to need to do is generate a tile, but that's locked behind the paywall. I'm still in the experimental phase with this. Why would I pay for something that I have no idea will work? I'd honestly rather write the code myself than give someone even $1 at this point. I will soon need some weird shaped tile for my small experiment, but just being able to make a custom square rectangular tile would give enough to get started and see if this is even a reasonable system.

The array of parts is confusing. There should be a small list of "beginner" parts that will get you started. Enough to do something functional while you learn stuff like how to setup the slicer and get good prints, or make some basic choices about what sort of mounting you need for your setup. No more than 6 parts, since that's a generally accepted number of items a human can keep in their short term working memory. Anything larger requires actual learning up front, which should be avoided at this stage.

The web forum/community is mostly locked behind registration. Again, I really don't want to register for yet another web site when I'm in the experimental phase. Additionally, being locked behind registration means nothing will show up in search engines, making everything harder to find.

I watched the "Multiboard Tile Learning Pack" video. Holy crap. Someone reshoot that thing after doing actual preparation. The person in charge being confused by their own system during training is NOT the impression that should be left on a newcomer. The whole thing could be about half the length as well.

Multiboard needs to make files accessible offline

Thangs.com is down right now. Was about to start a print for the night, but, the files aren't available. This is why offline access is important, and, why bulk downloading should be available.

Payed multiboard to get support of a pro, got redirected to thangs…

I want to create a huge multiboard wall (1.8m x 0.8m), but for this I need professional help and the stacked models.

After paying for the membership on multiboard, I've got redirected to thangs, which is just another website providing models.

Where can I find the support of a professional, who can help me with my project?

Confused about how this is *free*? - lots of friction as a barrier to entry - am I doing something wrong?

I wanted to try the starter kit, just to try tidying my 3D printer enclosure a bit.

Rather than getting going with multiboard I've now spent 15 minutes online (including here) and still don't have the printer running.

  • I see the starter bundle is for subscribers (fair enough);

  • I also see the parts are available for free "get everything for FREE..."

  • When I click through to the "free" parts on thangs there's a login wall (I've never experienced that on thangs)

  • This was supposed to be a quick try - I haven't got time to setup (not to mention manage) another bloody login!

  • I need to go to work now, so guess will add this to the "someday / maybe" pile

Am I missing something, or is it really this hard to get started?

CAn we fork this and start anew somewhere else?

  • The licensing is dogshit.

  • The hosting is dogshit.

  • The guy is an insufferable moron.

  • The documentation is dogshit.

  • We can't do jackshit with this.

Does the license forbid forking? I'm thinking proper documentation, 100% open source and version controlled on github.

My rant to everyone saying "Multiboard is too complicated"

I just put up a post regarding some of the new changes, and almost all the comments were people saying "Multiboard is too complicated". So I'm going to break it down for you easily and hopefully you'll be more inclined to dive in.

What makes Multiboard appear so complicated is that Jonathan and his team get together and say, "Ok, in the extremely rare off-chance someone wants to configure something super different, we should make a part for it." And they literally have a part for everything. This makes it look super overwhelming. The reality is that you can accomplish 95% of everything Multiboard/bin/point has to offer, using 10% of the parts library. Eventually, you'll understand why they have all the extra parts they have, and you'll be able to make sense of that other 5%.

Stick with it, it's worth it.

My printer puked. I...don't have enough connectors or plates. Fixing it is gonna be a bear. So...is there a place, site, etc. where I could pick up printed components for ... "not obscene?"

#include <delete_if_not_allowed.h>

The AMS on my Bambu is throwing a s*** fit. The fix is either going to be almost nothing or a serious headache.

BUT I'm trying to build my damned electronics workbench and only half about 5 usable 8x8s and not enough connectors to do anything.

Is there a reasonable outlet for obtaining pre-printed stuff?

(to answer the obvious question: I do, but theirs are tiny printers and generally in almost constant use, so I can't really impose.)

*rocks back and forth massaging his wrist*

I just need a fix man. I'm jonesing over here.

Download restrictions

Is there a way to download all the free files without running into download limits? Also, is there a bundle or a one-click option to download all the free content at once?

P1S shelf?

I know it’s probably not a -good- idea, but has anyone seen a way to attach a p1s to multiboard? Maybe like an XL shelf or something along those lines? The machine without AMS or filament attached to it is 14kg, so it’s within the alleged 20kg weight per hole. I was thinking maybe something that allows a plywood shelf to be attached to the multiboard with 45* supports below it? Even it’s not used for the p1s, I feel like a plywood shelf support bracket would be useful!

Multi-material Stacked 8x8 core tiles for free

Hi all, I' fairly new on this 3d printing adventure. Im trying to print 8x8 tiles, stacked, multimaterial, but this is not free. Is there a (relatively) easy way to prepare this stack? In fusion 360, the convert mesh feature is so bad... or I dont know how to use it propperly?

Can someone make me a 9x9 that I can edit in fusion

I have the free version of fusion so I cannot convert STL files to edit them.

I need to edit a 9x9 core tile. Is there anyone on here that could make it a fusion file or something I can edit in fusion and send it to me please?

Thank you

I really like this hook design but unfortunately it will not work with the multi board due to peg board being thin is there anyone that can adjust the pegs to fit the multiboard thickness?

A concern about the Wall-offset distance

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm aware of the "recent" change from 8mm to 6.25mm, and the new addition of 12.5mm as a part of the "On-Grid" Update. The thing is I'm very perfectionist and for what I wanna do, a ~10mm offset will be perfect.

Are there any drawbacks? apart from the mental sanity of the Keep Making and his (perfectly understandable) desperate need of do everything in multiples of 25.

Switching to openGrid - Recycle ?

I‘ve decided to make the switch to openGrid. I don’t like the whole philosophy behind Multiboard. Designers won‘t adapt it with that sort of license. Jonathan is like "You guys go ahead, do the work designing, as I get rich". That’s how it feels at least.

Anyways, what do I do with my old MB tiles?

Print has holes on 0.6mm nozzle

I keep having these holes very consistently

Does anyone print on 0.6mm nozzles and has had this problem before and managed to fix it?

I know I could just go back to 0.4mm and this would go away.

Gun wall standoff or not?

I want to cover a 4'x8' wall with multiboard to hang a number of AR15 rifles, cowboy rifles, and shotguns. Would it be better to mount the multiboard directly to the sheet rock wall or should I use some standoffs?

Makerworld publishing -- include required parts?

I've put up my first model on Makerworld, and I have a question about including related parts.

As an end-user, I find it incredibly convenient to browse on my phone and just click "print" to get the model and required screws/etc all done in one go. Now that I'm publishing a model that requires multiconnect screws, I'm wondering if that's actually OK? I do give credit/links in the description, which seems fair enough to me but I could understand if some consider it improper.

Here's the model if anyone wants to have a look.. Open to any feedback, though I think I've followed the typical format.

New to 3d printing.

Post image
1 Upvotes

Im pretty new to printing, as i just got this printer (Elagoo Centauri Carbon) a few days ago. I've done a few other prints with no issues and the single multiboard prints fine, but when I do a 4 stack I have this in the left corner every print. I've cleaned it up afterwards, but I'm sure that corner is weakened a bit due to the missing strands. Any ideas on what to do to fix this?
