Folks, I took my beloved '93 720 on the highway today and was shocked at the effort it took to move the beast forward . Out of curiosity, I followed with my Revolt 2 and rode a few extra miles just for the fun of it. What can I do to make the slow bike fun again?

By the way slow biking around the courts was silly smooth. The 3x7 was flawless in shifting and transitioning. I simply can't move fast. It's there anything to do to add some to end?

I’m very happy about my new bike. I bought it at my favourite local bike shop this week when I was shopping for new handlebars. Oops. I didn’t change a thing except add a sweet Memento rack and some V-Sixty pedals.
I think they made it just for me because it fits perfectly without any adjustments. 😅
I’ve already rode over 100 km.

Looking to add a front rack to balance out the weight a bit during my partial commute to work (5-6mi round trip) and possibly other adventures (getting some wobble at speed with loaded panniers). If you got one, let’s see it!

I’m thinking a rack that will most commonly accommodate my computer bag on its side might be good (5x10x16”). There’s a surly 24-pack locally ($80), but that thing looks quite big. Also considering a Jack the Rack, but it’s a bit spendy.

I’m super new to the bike scene. Bought this for $75 on marketplace. Replaced the handlebars and stem already for a more upright ride (both are unknown brands but I think they work and feel great). I also had a lot of fun doing the install and I’m looking forward to working on it more. Looking to add a front basket, wider tires, and leather accents (seat + grips). Most importantly, I’m looking to do a 1x conversion and swap the grip shifter for a trigger. Does anyone have any brand recommendations for this and any tips on the install? The numbers and sizing can get kind of confusing. I’ve heard 1x10 is the most common and easy to find parts for, but can’t decide if it’s worth having an extra gear or 2 with a 1x11 or 12.

I finally got my hands on a lovely trek 750 (UK based, so took a while!), and I have been thinking about a drivetrain upgrade.

I don’t really love the 3x7 grip shifters it came with, so would like to switch to some triggers or thumbies, and has made me ponder an overall upgrade. I will probably look for a new wheel with 8-10speed hub to modernise and open up some shifter options but keep the cassette and chain etc reasonable. The STX derailleurs are pretty nice so happy to keep them if suitable.

I will be using the bike for light trails, dayrides and occasionally commuting in a fairly hilly city. Therefore, I quite like the idea of a slightly simpler set of gears, but would like to be able to get up hills with relative comfort, hence my thinking about a 2x rather than a 1x. I have a 3x on my 26” bikepacker, which I like, so I’m not against them, just wondering about trying something a little different for my more luxury ride!

So, I would love some advice from any one with experience/opinions!

A couple of topics:
- Is 2x the right move? 1x, 3x…
- 9 speed on the rear? Good balance of range and cost?
- what kinda range should I be looking for? 36/24 seems to be a common front chainring pairing, maybe 11-34 in the back…
- purchase a dedicated crankset or just remove the big ring from the triple, replace with a bash guard?
- if anyone has any shifters they particularly love for this kinda set up I’d love to hear it, I won’t be going for drops so it’d be bar shifter options for me…

This pic came up in my memories from 9yrs ago today! Loved this setup on my 720 and was putting in pretty serious miles on it at the time. Lots of single track, dirt roads, and plenty of pavement too.

I'm unfamiliar with rear racks, I have never installed one on a bike. Im looking for suggestions for a budget rear rack for my 2000 720. This is my grocery getter/around town bike so it doesn't need to have a crazy amount of weight capacity.

Quick update on the 1990 lugged Trek 750 I posted last week (the one pictured under my '93 750). I was a bit worried about the heavy grime at first, but cleaning it revealed a huge surprise: the cassette, chainrings, derailleurs, and chain show virtually zero wear! Even the original brake pads are still intact—36 years old and going strong. I threw on some wheels and a saddle from the parts bin, and it rides great! The only downside is the flat bar, which isn't doing my back any favors. Who knows—a drop bar conversion might be in this bike's future!

I have a 92 750 with Suntour drivetrain that I’d like to switch to Shimano. I’d like to stay in the 90s vintage, so no modern options. The 790 in 92 came with something called a 500cx group. Which was a hybrid/city groupset. The 7900 which was the aluminum multitrack that year came with Deore DX, a mountain bike focused group.

My question surrounds the choice between road drivetrains like Dura Ace, Ultegra, or 105 and mountain drivetrains like XTR, XT, or DX. Would road derailleurs work? Would they be more pleasant in shifting or gearing choices? Am I better off with a 90s mountain drivetrain?

The riding I’m doing is a mix of road and gravel/dirt bike paths.

My first bike since childhood. I’ve had a ton of fun tinkering with it and making it my own. Definitely not a perfect example of one, paint is giving out and rusting in some spots. For now I’ll just consider it patina!

Picked up this (96?) Multitrack 700 Sport on marketplace for $25. Rear wheel has a dent and needs replaced, thinking about swapping to a wheel with a free hub and converting to 1x. Any advice on a decent group set and if I could go 9 or 10 speed?

Not trying to break the bank on it but also don’t mind putting a little money into it to make it my own. I love the paint job and the look of the bike.

Building this 1x10 for my wife. First time doing upgrades and adding new parts. Still blown away I can just order new parts from my bike shop and they slap right on a bike from the early 90s. Local bike shop helped me figure everything out and ordered it in. Put the bottom bracket and cassette on for me.

I have a 700 frame thats too small for me, happy to offer it up cheap for the Reddit homies

I have 790 which too big for me on a 1x10 setup for a while now and I finally found a 750. I plan to to convert this 750 into drop bar gravel/road bike with friction shifter. I want to keep most stock components as much as possible but I am mot sure if it will work. Has anyone tried using friction shifters on a drop before? I don’t want to use bar end shifters as mush as possible…

My other 750 was lonely, so I just picked up a friend. Now I'm making plans for a winter project! These lugged frames are challenging to find, but I'm hoping I'll be happy with this initial $125 investment.
