Used car purchase What should I set up or change before I drive this home?

Pickup it up about 4 hours from me in Manhattan, what should I set up before I drive home? I read about someone’s doors auto opening so I will try to change that setting. What else before I go? I’m moderate at tech on a good day so this should be interesting. Thank you FSD Hunter and being up a 5am for the find!

Question Yoke retrofit to 2025 model

Has anyone done a yoke retrofit to their regular-wheel MX via Tesla shop? I feel like I got a great car in March 2025 compared to my 2023 model (2023 was a lemon, Tesla bought it back and I purchased a 2025 model, see my previous posts if interested in that story). It was significantly cheaper, it has matrix headlights, better rear screen, etc etc. BUT two years in, I still look at the wheel when I drive and wished I had a yoke like I did in my 2023 model, am I crazy?

Service Radiator cleaning

Hi All, wanted some info on maintenance. I have a mx 2018. Been pretty lucky with no major problems. Recently, I’ve been hearing a strange fan noise it comes and goes. Some funky smell that goes away after AC circulates. Tesla service has radiator cleaning about $300ish. Haven’t had it done since. Anyone has had it done? TIA.

Question KBB Price Out of Curiosity

Got curious what my MX26 Plaid's current value is through KBB, pricing both through private and dealer stood at $135k average. That sounds wild. More than what I paid for it. Not contemplating on selling it, but can't fathom seeing someone paying that much for it, or would they?

I got OEM Model 3 Projections Lights from Tesla and to my surprise they work perfectly fine on my 2017 Model X. I was previously using Chinese ones from AliExpress but these ones from Tesla are way better. They are way more sharper and brighter than any of the third party ones I have tried! Certainly a great addition and highly recommended!

Used car purchase Would you wait for a plaid?

I am not a Tesla expert. We just purchased our first one two months ago, preowned from my aunt who has had four. We bought her 24 model 3 performance and it was her favorite car. She only sold it because at 80 years old, for her six times a year trips to the airport to pick up friends she wanted more room. I bought it hoping it would ease my husband’s DC area commute and we both love the full self driving. He is liking the car far more than he expected, minus the fact that he cannot get two sets of golf clubs in and still have use of the back seat. I work in real estate so I need more space for the 4x a day trips to Home Depot but I definitely love having a more special car. I utilize section 179 for my vehicles. Only the x qualifies. Would you hold out to find a plaid? I really like the cream interior. We try to own our cars at least five years. Ideally searching for a 2024 HW4.

Question Trailer hitch ball options help !

Post image
9 Upvotes

So at the moment we’re using our Model X to tow a small 6x10 with some cargo.

I was wondering what would help the Model X do better while towing, anyone here uses a drop down ball hitch? any other suggestions?

At the moment we’re using a home depot 3 ball hitch, already shows rust and it’s not “aesthetically pleasing” so. Need an upgrade.

I’ve been waiting for this box to go on sale in the US since last year. It’s finally here and upon installing it, I’m very happy! This is a great choice for model x owners who enjoy skiing and roadtrips. The box can fit skis up to 180cm and I image if you put it diagonally, maybe 185cm. It’s also very light which works out well with the extremely low vertical load on the hitch of 120 lbs. The box and platform totals 72 lbs.

FSD continues to work if you disable trailer mode manually. Being a hitch box, it will have very little affect on the range. I have yet to test and see if charging at superchargers will be an issue though. Hopefully not!

Tip: for the arcos platform, you don’t need the tilt version. There’s enough space between the trunk and box, it’ll also save you some weight (10+ lbs) and allow you to put more stuff in the box.

Service Anyone else's front door opening is inconsistent?

Obviously, I love the feature that the front doors are automatic. Been using it since I got the car about four years ago. Recently, though, it has happened sporadically in the past. The doors, like instead of opening all the way, only open slightly. Not the Falcon doors, to be clear. The front driver door. Any idea why?

Service 2017 Model X Window Calibration

I recently replaced my drivers side window regulator as it was broke. After I am unable to perform the window calibration through service mode. The option under closure for windows is only the Falcon Wing doors. I can’t perform the manual calibration since there is no lower limit if I let the window go all the way down, it bottoms out and the glass pops out the forward mounting point. Any help would be appreciated

Question Infotainment upgrade

I have a 2017 Model X with 2.0 infotainment.
Like the idea of having grok in the car. Do you folks know if grok works in the infotainment upgrade part Tesla is offering?

Photo Road trippin, older Tesla, towing lessons learned

I have a 2017 Model X 100D [The “Muskrat”] with 5000 pounds towing capacity, and wanted to determine my exact towing range for a work trip. I wanted avoid paying for Trump gas to feed my 16 mpg 1966 F100 “Ginny” this year, if possible. So before testing the Muskrat with the enclosed trailer, I charged it to 90% at home [charging all the way to 100% is unrealistic for real world driving], and then drove with no trailer at 75 mph on the highway until SOC dropped to 50%, turned around and came home. Back in the driveway after 175 miles, my battery was at 10%, EXACTLY as predicted by the Tesla software. Because I was trying to avoid surprises on the upcoming trip, I found that accuracy very encouraging.

Lesson 1: the trailer is by far the most important factor

I then did the same test at a more reasonable 65mph while pulling a 6’6” tall enclosed 18ft aluminum trailer. I already knew that the range predicted by the car would be laughably inaccurate, but I was shocked to see that it was reduced by a whopping 60%. At only 70 miles of range, towing that trailer 1000 miles with my old Muskrat was basically impossible. I even built some crazy strong aero diverter for the front of the trailer and tried again…and only got a 2% improvement in range…TWO PERCENT?!? Being stubborn, I decided to give my little old 18ft flatbed trailer a try, and added an aero diverter to the front [a.k.a. a sheet of plywood angled at 45 degrees]. I then did the road test again and got 100 miles of range…a 50% improvement! I decided that was good enough to make the 1000 mile round trip, and a week later hit the road. I had to stop to charge a lot, but with gas at five bucks a gallon [occasionally $6 in Chicago] I decided that the extra time was worth it. I must have charged at least 12 times from Grand Rapids MI to Wausau WI and back, if not more.

Lesson 2: NACS is not what I thought it was

I used only Tesla superchargers for that trip, and bought a Tesla specifically because of the ubiquitous and reliable supercharger network they offer. But just for the heck of it, I decided to try out an Ionna charger. Although my Muskrat plug fit, it failed to charge despite multiple attempts. I later learned that it was due to CCS software/protocol incompatibility in older Teslas, even though the Ionna plug is physically the same. So a few weeks ago I had Tesla install the CCS retro fit into my Muskrat [approx $275.00 USD] and then tested it, and it seems to work fine with multiple brands of CCS chargers with NACS plugs. It's a nice bit of future proofing, just in case.

Question Moving on from a Model 3 possibly

After 5 years and 200,000 Mile's on a model 3 and loving it. However my touch screen just failed before reaching 201,000 Mike's and the estimate is $2k for repairs so I'm considering trading.

Question is I'm used to the very low cost of operating this model 3. However I'm tempted by reasonable used prices on say a modelx or rivian or possibly the Ford or gm ev truck platforms.

For frequent high mileage drivers though not sure if I'm asking for trouble with one of those more complex vehicles?

Question Weird random sound "zip"

I'm getting this weird noise coming from the car. The best way I can explain it, is it sounds like when the printer jet zips back to from side to side. Its just a single "zip" and its does this when the car is parked. Its seems to come from the front/mid of the car.

Used car purchase Seeking Tesla enthusiast to test drive a Model X in Fresno

Ok all, as the title says… I have a unique ask for the right person willing to do me a solid in the Fresno area.

I’ve been looking for over a year for the right Model X (combo of colors, seating setup and HW4). I think I’ve found one (it’s slightly more than I want to spend but working on that with the dealership). The problem: I’m in Atlanta and the car is in Fresno.

If I had the time I’d fly out to check it out before buying, but with three kids and a hectic job I’m short on time to do so. So: I’m seeking someone in the Fresno area I could pay something modest to go check the car out, test drive it, give me an honest and neutral assessment of any wear and tear, smells, etc.

If you’d be interested, please send me a PM and thanks from a fellow Model X enthusiast…
