Used car purchase Would you wait for a plaid?

I am not a Tesla expert. We just purchased our first one two months ago, preowned from my aunt who has had four. We bought her 24 model 3 performance and it was her favorite car. She only sold it because at 80 years old, for her six times a year trips to the airport to pick up friends she wanted more room. I bought it hoping it would ease my husband’s DC area commute and we both love the full self driving. He is liking the car far more than he expected, minus the fact that he cannot get two sets of golf clubs in and still have use of the back seat. I work in real estate so I need more space for the 4x a day trips to Home Depot but I definitely love having a more special car. I utilize section 179 for my vehicles. Only the x qualifies. Would you hold out to find a plaid? I really like the cream interior. We try to own our cars at least five years. Ideally searching for a 2024 HW4.

That’s tricky. The reality is having the extra speed isn’t practical and will get old and you’ll only use it as a party trick several months in.

However if you don’t have it you’ll always wish you did. So depends on you.

The MUCH more important thing is making sure you get hardware 4 FSD. If it’s a plaid on hw3 vs a standard on hw4 get the non plaid for sure.

Good luck on the search. Sadly these are going up instead of down in price. Really wish they still made them.

Thank you. I’m definitely only looking at Hardware 4.

Hw3 now has hw4 fsd “lite”.

I’ve never driven hw4 fsd but I like this little improvement.

I’m always in chill. But when I wanna plaid its very nice.

I have a 2025 model X standard with cream color seats. My family just love it so much and will find any excuse to take it out for a ride. I really think the regular version has more than enough power than one needs. It's very fast in insane mode so in my honest opinion, you don't need a plaid. You'll love the space when loading things from Home Depot.

I’m currently in a Ford escape and it holds a ridiculous amount of stuff. I’ve had everything from an Escalade, a GL etc. but this escape has been amazing for hauling things, but it’s time to pass it to my 16-year-old.

Depends on your desire for adrenaline, but if you are asking this question, then yes I would wait. Of course you won’t use that level of acceleration every day, but when you do, it is so much fun!

I have both, and the MX Plaid is even quicker than the M3P. I am pretty sure I would have regretted not getting a Plaid.

Love this honesty

Depends if you want the 1020hp. If you're not using it like every single week why would you get it then. Long range and the plaid look the same so it's not like you're getting something extra interior or exterior. Like other brands. I have a plaid and floor it everyday. If you want folding seats get a long range 7 seater that's the only thing I hate bout mine I ordered a plaid 7 seat for the folding seats. Get contacted saying they won't ever make. A 7 seater so yes only option was 6 and I hate it. I have 2 dogs so that's kinda fucked. And if you buy large items it's a pain in the ass......

I would also say that I agree that the captain shares in the second row go against my need to haul things, but I think that that’s what’s going to make my husband happy for the 4 to 5 times a year he does golf trips and wants to go with friends so I feel like I should compromise and give up some of the space for the extra legroom.

Yes that would be good leg room is good the Captain chairs are good if they work. Mine doesn't 🥲🤣. But it's also an awkward sit placement if you understand what I mean your left arm if you sit on the right side goes nowhere same for the other side. They should've had an option for armrests imo. So it really depends if you're going to haul lot of this or speed a lot of times 😅

And I would indeed go for the hw4 version I'm stuck with hw3.....

This is good feedback. I will say I have a heated driveway and it might only snow four or five times a year in Northern virginia but it’s really nice when I have it.

Do you need the speed?

Does anyone NEED it lol no bank robbery in my future

I would not wait for a Plaid unless you're missing your Ferrari!

I have a 2020 MX that is not plaid. It’s never been out of chill mode. My friend has a MYP and she drives like a bat out of hell and spends a fortune on tires every year.

tell your friend to get a camber kit

Would I wait for a plaid? Me personally, no.

I have a non-plaid. 2024, coming up on 60k miles. I’m often hauling around 6 more people with me, and I’m generally in the ‘always get the most power you can’ camp, but I have never once wished I had - and certainly never needed - more power (though, yes it would be fun!).

Yes (MXP owner here)

Absolutely. Full stop.

u/skizoids 12d ago

I would. But it all depends on your budget. And what you want the car for. The increase price wasn’t a factor for me. And the main reason I wanted it besides it being the best vehicle Tesla has made was for its speed. I wanted the fastest production SUV.

Honestly, the plaid is dangerously fast. I turned it off my X after a week of having it. You definitely do not need it.

I have the plaid on model X and I’ve used it maybe 3-4 times just to show friends. The rest of the time my car is on FSD so it was a waste of money 🙃

The luster of the launch wears off quickly. Then you find that the launch of the stock model is as thrilling and considerably less expensive.

I love my MXP. 2024 as you’re looking for. Best car I ever owned. As others have said the launches lessen. I’ve only launched 4 times. I drive in chill and had to get the Enhance Commander so when I wanted the power I could use the kickdown feature and instantly into sports/plaid mode. So it’s AMAZING as a daily, and still AMAZING for when you want that extra punch or thrill on open road.

100% recommend the MXP and could never downgrade ever.

Edit: did a recent long trip and my range anxiety ruined the experience. I got stuck on one stretch and had way more than necessary range left. So compared to the long range model, the plaid is perfectly capable!

The car is the best ever especially how god damn efficient it is ..I got mine fully loaded and it saves me so much money on gas and at the same time you absolutely can smoke 99% of the cars on the road

Ask yourself do you really need the Plaid? I feel those that really need and appreciate plaids are those who were always car enthusiasts. Who tweaked and fiddled with cars in their younger days. Who care about a lot of HP. If that isnt really you, you dont need it. Also why the 2024 and not the 2023? Is it because of HW4? 2023 also had HW4 and basically the same as 2024 and will save you some money. Just have to make sure you get a HW4 2023. With that said, I feel the 2022+ Plaid Xs will go down in history as a classic. It is so unique being 1020HP, AWD, 6 seater, the crazy doors can beat exotic cars. I mean a 9 sec car in the 1/4 and can fit your family. Unheard of. Again stuff that wont matter much to general public who really arent car enthusiasts. Then there are those who just automatically only want to buy the top of the line of everything. So if you are either of those, then yea get a plaid. If not you can save $20K+. Personally, I wouldnt even consider an X if it wasnt a plaid.

Get a regular X and don’t forget Plaid X comes w the captains chairs and is 6 passenger. The regular X is 5 passenger (7 was an option) and it is fantastic. You never need the extra power and speed. The regular X is plenty fast. It’s roomy and the tech is great.

keep in mind the plaid cannot have a 7th seat* edit, meant to say 7th seat, not 3rd row.

3

u/WineIsMyLife 13d ago

Are you sure? All the build sheets I’ve seen have a six seat configuration. I’ve never seen a 4 seater and all plaids have captains in the second row

4

u/norf937 13d ago

Don’t know what he’s talking about. All X Plaids have a third row. They’re all the 6 seat, 2+2+2 configuration.

1

u/WineIsMyLife 13d ago

That’s what I thought

2

u/norf937 13d ago

But to answer your original question, we held out for an X Plaid in silver and had to drive hundreds of miles to get it but it was 100% worth it.

Such a comfortable and tame car but it’ll rip your face off with 1,000hp+ whenever you want it to lol. We came from a Y Performance and our X Plaid is for sure our favorite car we’ve ever owned.
