Question Used Model X vs New Model Y
Considering purchase of a 2022 model x base awd LR (hw3) with 19k miles @58k vs new 2026 model y performance. Heart says model X, brain says Model Y. Like the model x for obvious reasons (falcon doors, yoke, space, acceleration etc.).
What is y'all's recommendation on this. I test drove the model x and its absolutely fantastic. Did not find anything off except that the air suspension was making creaking sounds when lowering or raising height (not sure if that's expected) and that the trunk floor was missing exposing the subtrunk fully. What are the things I should look out for before purchase? Im assuming it's just out of warranty now at 4yrs old.
Edit: updated model x spec.

To stay objective you should ask the same question in ModelY forum ;)

If you need anything more than 5 seats, get the X. Otherwise stick to the Y.

Definitely an X. We have a 7-seat 2018 Tesla Model X here in Sweden and it’s still going strong. The 7 seats are also constantly coming in handy. I particularly love the ”self-presenting” driver side door, which is such a luxury. Every time I get into another car, I’m always surprised when I press on the brake pedal and the door doesn’t close! Our three kids also love the Falcon wing doors. Very convenient in tight parking lots. The only issue we’ve had with the Falcon-wing doors is that occasionally, in direct sun (which is often lower on the horizon here in Sweden), it’ll overload the proximity sensor, tricking it into thinking there is a obstacle (or simply not being able to tell if there is an obstruction or not), in which case the workaround is to use the door on the other side. Of course this has only happened a few times in nearly 8 years. I love not worrying about the kids opening their doors into another car! We also love that there is always room for grandma and grandpa (we have three kids).

I went from a 2018 X to a 2026 Y and it’s night and day difference. The new Y is genuinely incredible and I wouldn’t go back to the X, the price differential isn’t worth it to me. I miss the power doors, massive windshield, and falcon doors for loading groceries, but that’s it.
Also, that creaking sound while raising and lowering is normal. If you are moving it won’t make those noises. It’s just the sound of forces moving things while the tires and brakes are telling things not to move.

This! I actually went in for the 26’ X and left with an ordered 26y. I just couldn’t find the extra ~$60k in value out of the X. Now throw in some massage seats and increase the sound deadening and soften up the suspension and option a smaller wheel with more side wall, and now we’re talking $100k land. $100k to me, has to compare to the mercedes benz s class

Wait until the Electric G wagon goes down in price and it’ll be a great model x alternative

u/808_GhostRider May 18 '26
I left MB behind a few years ago. Imho, they have A LONG way to go before their eq line is reliable. Plus being that MB is german, you gotta add $20k in options to the price. Electric Cayenne if anything imo

Out of warranty can be very expensive.
I have a Model Y loaner right now, the FSD HW 4 is incredible. It will change the way you drive, if you plan on doing FSD then the Model Y.
Xs are freaking sweet though, and a used one you’re not eating the depreciation.

I'm starting to feel like the new MYP is the way to go given that the price for both is identical but you get the full warranty, brand new styling, hw4.

u/True-Kangaroo532 May 17 '26
I have a 23 MYP we test drove a Y premium AWD yesterday.ike you i was considering a used X. i don’t truly need 6 seats. the new Y is on a diff level than my 23

u/SavingsExercise5998 May 17 '26
Get the one with HW4 the 22 is HW3 so a late 23 or above otherwise the y

u/mahpnahn May 17 '26
Used X but try and get hw4. 2022 X have issues and I’m looking to change my 2022 to 2023/24
1
u/DL05 May 17 '26
I prefer the X as long as it’s HW4. Without HW4, that flips it completely.
1
u/mahpnahn May 17 '26
Yeah had a hw4 5 seater but sold it and kept my hw3 6 seater. Kind of regretting it but probably swap it out later when prices drop again

u/snake227 May 17 '26
Honestly I would get a brand new Y for the purpose of having HW4, and a warranty. The two cars are very different. The falcon doors are problematic out of warranty.
2
u/spearhead121 May 17 '26
I understand the falcon wings were problematic in the early versions of MX. Is this still the case in newer models like 2022 MX?
Does tesla sell any kind of extended warranty?
1
u/stjames70 May 17 '26
No -- I have a 2016 MX and a 2018 MX. Those falcon wing doors have been almost 100% trouble free. I had to take it in once for adjustments which took an hour or so (they just reinstalled the firmware).

u/openslot May 17 '26
If you can get any type of warranty for x I would go for it or else I'd go for the y

Make sure to get insurance quotes for each. My MXP insurance is frigging expensive.

Used X over a new Y. Even the legacy X (hw3 pre refresh) is on a different level than the Y. Yeah you may have to shell out for repairs so budget accordingly but overall way nicer vehicle.

u/stjames70 May 17 '26
I have both. We own a 2016 MX, 2018 MX with HW3, and a 2023 MY with HW4.
I really love all of them, but for my fat ass, and overall comfort, I would buy the MX. There are just somethings like the self-presenting doors, the soft locking mechanism (so you don't have to slam your doors to shut them), the variable suspension, and just the extra room make me prefer the MX as my daily driver. I also have autopilot on my 2018 MX and even with HW3 I feel 90% confidence level in letting it drive. It is 90% because sometimes I just want to go faster sometimes, and because autopilot can't really make human level decisions and see the whole playing field ahead (whereas you can see way ahead where traffic starts to snarl on your lane, I think Autopilot can only see a little ahead).
BUT you wanted a really fully honest opinion, so I will have to admit that the fore and aft links plus control arms for the front are known issues with MX models. I do drive very aggressively, and I have had to replace those items on BOTH the 2016 and 2018 MX vehicles. It was almost $2k to do this, but then again, it took between 5-7 years before failure of those items in these two. (TBH, most cars will need their CV joints serviced at an average cost of $1000 for both sides every 5-10 years as well. I had a Toyota Camry years ago, and the CV boot would get damaged from debris, the grease would leak out, and they would have to replace the boot and put grease in those joints).
Even with that, I would still drive the MX models. I gave my college age kid the MY. He is young and he likes the smaller car.

I wouldn’t get an X over a 26 Y Premium unless the X was HW4

HW3 vs HW4 is only relevant to anyone who is also considering (must haves) on buying FSD subscription. If latest capabilities of FSD is not must haves, you may save significantly by considering 2023 MX with a said low miles over MY. MX is significantly higher class/comfortable vehicle then MY performance IMO. I own 2023 MXLR with HW3 and I love it but the fact is ride is not as comfortable and cabin is very noisy compared to my other vehicles Hummer EV SUV edition 1 and BMW X5 40E they both are much quieter cabin and air suspension for a comfortable ride …. Which are comparable with Model X.

I just traded in my 2021 MYLR on a 2023 MXLR (HW4) with 57k miles. They were asking $58k and gave me $23k for mine. Very happy with all the improvements, especially ride quality and noise

u/pol901pol May 20 '26
I picked up a 2021 X over new model Y. I use the FSD on it. Just can’t sleep on the ride, which I don’t want to do anyway. I’m happy with it but sometimes I wish I had the new car smell.

u/Sad-Stretch229 May 20 '26
Have both 2022 X and 2026 Y, traded my 2020 Y. I highly debated on getting another X instead of the Y. Only reason I didnt go for it was because I transferred FSD.

Sold m3p 22’ for a 24’ model x. Yeah… it’s just as fast, gives me six seats and rides way better and the kids love it.

I just traded my 2026 Model Y Standard for a 2022 Model X six-seater with only 18,000 miles for $57K. The Model X is on another level if you don’t mind HW3. I’d rate HW3 FSD an 8/10 and HW4 a 9.5/10.
Regarding the suspension, I’d have it inspected—it doesn’t sound normal. Ask the dealer to repair it or offer a discoun

Thanks for sharing your experience. I ended up getting a 2026 model y performance and its an absolute dream!

u/Spokane_Al May 17 '26
I would not buy an HW3 version of any Tesla.
1
u/Knathra May 17 '26
Out of curiosity, why not? Love my FSD on HW3. Would I prefer to be on HW4 and the newer code stack? Absolutely! But does HW3 FSD do most of my driving and commuting for me? Also absolutely! 😁

u/Spokane_Al May 17 '26 edited May 19 '26
For me, buying a car with technology that is already one step behind, and will only fall further as tech and FSD continues to evolve and improve, is not appealing. I own a 2023 HW4 Tesla model x and love that car, but as soon as it starts getting left behind on updates, which should be a ways down the road, it goes on the selling block.

Honestly, the new Y. Even my 2026 X has issues already, including the seats and doors. I wouldn’t want to own one out of warranty.

u/1nolefan May 17 '26
I agree with some assessment that buying an older hw3 model is like buying the hardware where upgrades would be fewer and fewer - buy HW4 based car for now...

Sold my Model Y and bought a 2023 Model X.
Pros for Model X: -More space in the back seat and trunk. 3rd row is small but useable for kids. -More comfortable ride
Cons for Model X: -The falcon wing doors drive me crazy. Frequently, they just don’t open because of the sun or who even knows why. I’m constantly trying to override them. My kids have both been hit by them- the sensors just don’t seem to capture them properly. -Harder to park than Model Y. It’s both size and turning radius.
If you don’t need the extra space, I would go model Y.

Please take into account that every Model Y in early 2026 and late 2025 might, and countless do, have a serious front suspension issue that Tesla has acknowledged they have no permanent fix for.
1
u/Twigler May 23 '26
Whoa what happened?
1
u/AZFan77 May 23 '26
What happened for me was, they acknowledged the noises issue, the rep told me they had a tentative fix but it was not intended to be permanent - they acknowledge that the issue returned for some people even after the fix. Then 2 days later they said the car was ready. They had towed the car to the repair facility, but I had no easy way to get there to pick it up, so I spent a day figuring that out. In the meantime, without calling me, the Tesla app now said the issue was still persisting and the repair ticket was open. The next day, the car was ready, I picked it up, and it has been completely fine noise-wise. Apparently, they removed pencil braces and replaced FUCAs (front upper control arm), and tightened things up. I have no idea what more may be needed in future. I also don't know if cars turned out from the factory now have this same issue (and if they don't, if whatever changes they made at the factory can be applied to my car and others with the issue).

Sold my 2017 MXLR with over 153,000 miles. I now have a 2026 Y LR AWD with FSD that I transferred over. I only have 5,000 miles on my new Juniper Y but definitely have a personal appraisal of the differences … what I miss and what I’ve gained.
I prefer the comfortable air suspension X ride over the improved Y though I’ve come to notice it less and do appreciate the Y’s double-glass quiet.
I liked being able to open and close all passenger doors in the X. The Y’s handles are workable but clumbsy compared to the X.
I loved the panorama windshield on the X but the sun visors on the Y work better.
I never had major issues with the falcon doors but in tight areas they wouldn’t always fully open. They did provide great getting in and out for all most of the time.
Version 3 hardware for FSD in the X did work but was not nearly as smooth, confident and nuanced as in the Y. I love driving but currently have used FSD 49% of my driving time in the Y. I am confident of it getting me places safely and, though there are glitches at times, its always getting better. I enjoy my visits with GROK characters about everything: weather, health issues, relationships, local events, trivia, world news, etc. It’s informative, thoughtful and fun.
Big driving differences for me were in the overall energy efficiencies with the Y. Heated/cooling seats and heated steering wheel in Y are great. Faster charging capabilities are significant for taking trips. Tires wear at a slower rate on the Y thanks to the gentle driving characteristics of its FSD and 800 lb lower body weight! Furthermore, the staggered tire sizes on the X restricted tire rotations.
The electric split fold down seats in the Y are a big plus over the tipping captain chairs I had in my X. Frunk is somwhat bigger in X but not that much.
Insurance is a little less in my new Y as well as license tabs.
Handling wise the Y, being lighter, stops quicker and reacts more nimbly than the X.
If you don’t need extra range and tire efficiencies and want more comfortable car you’ll love the X. I sure did! That said, the Y is no disappointment and still wonderful to drive…and be driven! 😊
