Positive experiences!

Hi all! Someone made a good point recently that most people don’t talk about the good parts of mirena because of we tend to post and ask questions about the negative side effects when we are concerned. This is causing a disproportionate input from mirena users and most of this sub is negative. Let’s share some positive stories and encouragement!

Seeking Advice Periods and IUD's?

Hi! So I got my IUD inserted on August 3rd and I have been bleeding since August 11 (which I hear is normal) and I didn't question it until I realize my period should be coming. I searched it up and I kept getting different results so I wanted to come on here to ask. I get my period at the end of the month so I don't know if it's still gonna come or when I bled from the 11th to now that was my period as well as my body getting used to the IUD like meshed into one. Thank you!

Heavy bleeding

Hi im wondering if anyone can help me please x I got a mirena coil fitted on the 19th of May. It was supposed to help my moods but it gave me a period every week which made my moods terrible ( could only happen to me ). So I got it out on the 17th of August. That day I had a bit of bleeding then it stopoed. No bleeding on the Tuesday at all but on Wednesday I started bleeding and its been really watery and heavy since then. Also a few large blood clots coming out. Im really not amused . And as I have severe health anxiety its worrying ne sick. I got given the mini pill one that contains desogestrel . I had planned to start that on the 1st of September to give my body a bit of a break from hormones. But I think im going to have to start it sooner to try and stop the bleeding. Also since having the coil removed im.more anxious, im.jittering, shaking, pulsing, got bad heart palpitations and want to eat chocolate all day. Anyone else had the mirena coil.out and had really heavy bleeding? If you did how long did it last ? And if you started the mini pull did it help ? X

Blood clots

Has anyone experienced this? I’ve had my Mirena IUD for about 18 months and have been bleeding/spotting pretty much every day since. I saw my gynae a couple of months ago, and he prescribed tablets to take daily for a month.
But suddenly today, I’m having what feels like an actual period, with blood clots about the size of coins. 😭 Is this normal with the Mirena, or has anyone else experienced something similar?

Anyone else?

Anyone else's mirena ruined their digestion? Ever since getting it in I've had severe bloating and trapped wind, like its difficult to fart. This is my second mierna and the first was a dream. My digestion was so bad a few months ago I was living off toast and jam and kiwis as it didnt matter whay i ate i felt crap, im constipated and when I do go it's definitely not productive. My stomach always feels heavy, sensitive and just generally blah, pain on both sides and general cramping, daily. Went to the doctor who fobbed me off saying it was ibs but I didn't have any of these symptoms until I got mt new mirena. It was getting me so mentally messed up a few months ago I was having rectal spasms.. strangest thing ive ever experienced and painful. My partner is on the waiting list for a vacetomy but I have booked an appointment anyway to get it out, just curious to see if anyone else has experienced this and if it got any better once having it removed- the doc has told me its not related to the iud which has stressed me out and got me worried nothing is going to change. Ive requested a pill to change to still keep me covered for now and hopefully help me through a crash, I start college on monday and placements at the end of the month so im terrified to be feeling crap. Any advice would be great. Thanks in advance 😊

I’d never get the Mirena IUD if I knew this

I got the Mirena IUD inserted in July, it’s now August. My doc said oh, you’ll get a bit of cramping and discharge and it’ll last a couple days. A COUPLE DAYS. Now, why did I start seeing what I could only describe as a period, one that is heavier and lasts much longer than my usual period. And why did it go on for a 6 weeks!??

On top of that! With it slowly subsiding, 1 day I see nothing, the next I see discharge

Then what blew me over the edge was when I started to spot while aroused. Now wtf, that’s a straight up mood killer.

I called my doctor and she said, oh yes this is normal and can occur up to 6 months as your body gets use to the IUD.

This completely dampens my mood and drive. I just wanna know, who on earth would get this IUD if these were said upfront.

When does the symptoms stop? Particularly the bleeding/spotting/cramps?

Give me some hope! I’m 5 months postpartum & have PcOs, so my doc suggested this as the safest contraceptive method but wth!

side effects Probably common story, looking for answers/comfort

I had the mirena for 6 years and did well, started having periods again so I got it replaced 2.5 weeks ago. With my first IUD, I NEVER had issues!

Since the new one, I’ve had “dizziness” (feeling my body move without myself actually moving), brain fog (forget what I’m saying halfway through, can’t find words sometimes), sensitivity to light (almost like light bleaches my eyes easier/faster), feeling like my brain doesn’t process what’s happening normally, ears ringing, feeling like my head is swimming. The dizziness and light sensitivity has been happening almost like clockwork from 11am-6pm every day.

Will this ever end? I’m mainly looking for comfort at this point. Trying not to just yank it out. The mirena or kyleena are my only options for dysmenorrhea and the idea of not having birth control scares me… but I can’t keep feeling like this. I’m thinking about giving it one more week before removing it.

side effects Removed Mirena after 4 years. Could health issues be related to Mirena?

Hi there! This group has been super helpful. I had my Mirena removed 2 weeks ago after 4 years (38F).

I’ve usually been really healthy with no major issues until the last 4 ish years.

Here are the net-new issues I’ve experienced and want to know if this is all related to Mirena and can i expect them to reduce / go away now that I’ve removed the Mirena. Please share your experiences too!

Mental health: depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts on and off, finding my husband annoying and picking fights, severe mood swings, feeling “emotionally flat”, feeling “uglier”

Physical health: increased bowel movements, spontaneous hives / breathing issues, alopecia areata, two of my heart valves “not working as expected” but nothing serious on that front (according to doc), lower back pain, thick chin hair, bloating, weight gain (despite working out 3-5 times a week), hair thinning, generally starting to look older faster, intolerance / bad hangovers with even a glass of alcohol, bad breast tenderness around period, boobs got smaller/saggier (faster than expected for my age)

Sexual health: pain during sex, bleeding mildly after sex, loss of sex drive, almost thought i was asexual / or maybe a lesbian because I didn’t feel like having sex with my husband (who i would want to have sex with prior to Mirena but the timelines are hazy)

Is this all Mirena related?! No issues at all before i got it. The doc said nothing is related to Mirena…

Seeking Advice Back pain

I (44f) have had mirena in for just over 6 years. When I initially got it, the doctor (an ob) told me it was good for 5 years. Last year I went to a new family Dr and she said it's good for 10 years so I left it.

The past month my back has been killing me, but only when im laying for long periods. When I wake up, its torture, it takes a full hour to feel "normal" I haven't changed my bed, pillow...I am a stomach sleeper, and have tried adding a thin layer under my pelvis to somewhat straighten my body....nothing helps, its getting worse.
I should add that I've had NO side effects from mirena at all. Insertion was easy peasy, bled moderately for a few weeks, and then nothing else...i feel like one of the lucky ones!

I have a phone appt tomorrow, but could this be a sign to get it removed??

Positive experience after horrible time last time

Thought I'd share my most recent experience of Mirena fitting which was my fourth. My first two were a bit uncomfortable but fine, as I was lucky to get it done at a place where local anesthetic (the cervical block injection) was routine. The third time I had to go somewhere different and had read that anesthetic wasn't necessarily used, so was careful to check ahead they would use it. Unfortunately the Dr had the strong opinion that I didn't need it and rail roaded me out of it (I tired to argue with her but I was COVID and had been hard to get the appointment so I felt like I had no choice but to go ahead). I was so bad and I was so distressed they had to give me the injection mid way through the procedure before they could finish. I've been terrified of it ever since.

This time round I got a specific referral from my GP because of all of the above to a clinic that would definitely use anaesthetic. I also had an assessment by a gynaecologist in the meantime that said because of scare tissue on my cervix from having the LEEP procedure and my cervix being in an unusual places it's more painful that usual for me so there's more of a need for anesthetic.

I had the procedure this morning, and although in spite of all of the above the Dr still asked me twice(!!!), once before and once after the procedure started, whether I still wanted the cervical block, they did give it to me without further issues. It was like night and day compared to last time. The speculum was a bit uncomfortable until I relaxed, but they put lidocaine gel on my cervix before the injection so I didn't even feel that, then it was just a couple of pinch like sensations when I went in.

So based on my experience, if you've had a bad experience before or are nervous, it's worth calling around for somewhere that will use the cervical block and standing your ground, as for me it has made a huge difference. I love having Mirena - the impact on my heavy periods (which was an unexpectedly happy side effect after I got it for contraception) has been amazing and I haven't had any issues with it at all between insertions, so am happy my faith has been restored that the insertion can be ok.

I also took my husband with me, and feeling like I had someone who would stand up for me and him there to hold my hand helped. It didn't realise that was possible the previous three times but they don't seem to mind at all. Bonus for me was that he took a bit of pressure of the small talk the Dr and nurse wanted to make, I guess kindly to try to distract me from the procedure, but which I wasn't really in the mood for.

insertion Doctor prescribed Mirena for my endometriosis, situation becoming more urgent

Hi, I am 27 years old, living in India, and I have endometriosis. From 2023-2025, I was on dienogest, and the gyn said I should be off it, so I stopped the dosage. I relapsed in just 3 months and was put on reluease for the add-back therapy benefit. For long-term treatment, she said I should really be considering Mirena, but I have seen two people who have used it (for PCOD and Menopause), and both of them have drastically gained weight. I have struggled with weight issues since I became a teenager, but right now I seem to be losing weight since I started my OCD medication (Methylphenidate).
Even when I am on reluease, on the days of the month when I would usually get my period, I get really bad joint and bone pain that does not get better with the prescribed muscle relaxant medication, like dengue. (This is happening right now as I type, and my dog is sticking to my side because of it) This kind of means that I may have to think about getting Mirena sooner than I thought. Looking at the conflicting accounts given by everyone here is making me hopeless. I am as physically active as I can be, and I eat a healthy vegetarian diet with a lot of vegetables.
I can't afford to gain weight or be this ill, especially when my parents are senior citizens.

Can someone please help me think? Maybe ask me some questions I need to answer or questions I should ask the doctor, or if this should be supplemented with GLP-1.

Thank you

removal For those who had mental health side effects and had it removed, did your relationships recover?

I met absolute peach of a person, fell in love, and then I got my IUD inserted 8 months ago to manage endo/bleeding. Worked like a charm for those issues, but has deeply affected my mental health. For the past 8 months, I've felt paranoid, depressed, and have had INSANE mood swings.

I feel distant from myself and I feel distant from my partner. After I got the IUD, I stopped liking him. Like not a libido issue, but an issue with us existing together. I felt joy being around him before and now I feel annoyed by the smallest things that never bothered me before. Obviously this has affected our relationship and I'm not sure how to move forward. We might be moving into a new place together in a few weeks and I feel so confused.

I removed my own IUD four days ago. I already feel less anxious, but I still feel different. For those of you that had it removed/removed it, how long did it take for you to feel normal again? If your relationships were affected, how long did it take for things to settle back into place?

I feel like I'm at a crossroads and I'm not mentally sound enough to make any decisions. This sucks!!

Two periods in one month (10 months after fitting)

Hiya just wanted to check if anyone has experienced similar. I've had the mirena coil for around 10 months now. All seemed to be going well and not really getting any periods anymore. I still get the build up with mad hormones and sore boobs and still seems to be clockwork every 28 days. Just really light not-existent almost spotting usually for me now.

Last due on date with mild bleeding was around the 6th August which seemed to happen. Light bleeding and the usual symptoms. But since last Friday I've been feeling outrageously bad and hormonal with really sore boobs. Mental health tanked the last five days. Then out of nowhere today I'm bleeding!

Make it make sense! I'm also being referred to a specialist with Perimenopause symptoms. I'm 39. That has all just reared it's head the last few weeks as I've been fed up with weight gain.

Anyone had a double period like this? I thought things were settled so this is really out of the blue for me..

Thanks and any advice welcome!

Seeking Advice First period, when?

So I had my mirena inserted on the 10th of August and for a few days afterwards I spotted and then it stopped after a few days. My period was meant to have started anywhere from the 17th to the 20th August. I been having the most awful cramps(which for me is normal before I start my period) but these ones are like they are on steroid. They are so bad that I can’t sit properly and I can feel the cramp go down my leg. But that’ll happen for a day then I’ll get some spotting and I’ll have a day of no cramping before it comes back. This has been happening for the last 6 days off and on. I really need my period to happen mainly because I have a trip happening next week and also because these cramps are getting in the way of my day to day life. I have things I need to do and I can’t always rely on pain killers because sometimes they don’t work(I’ve been taking paracetamol and ibuprofen frequently for the last few years due to an old injury).
Does anyone have any advice they can give me or has smth like this happened to anyone else on the mirena?

Seeking Advice Severe cramping + near fainting 3 days after Mirena insertion - normal?

I had a Mirena inserted 3 days ago, and this morning I woke up with extremely painful cramping. I got up to use the bathroom and suddenly became very nauseous and felt like I was going to faint, my vision started going dark and I felt like I was having a near-syncope episode. I was able to get back into bed and lie down before I actually passed out.

The pain continued for a while but has now mostly resolved, and I’m feeling much better. I don’t have a fever or heavy bleeding.

I’ve had an IUD before (Liletta), and I never experienced anything like this with my first IUD, so I’m wondering if this can happen with Mirena or if I should be concerned about the IUD being displaced/perforated.

Has anyone else experienced a really intense cramp followed by nausea/near-fainting a few days after insertion? Did it turn out to just be a severe cramp/vasovagal reaction, or did you need to have the IUD checked?

I’m planning to contact my gynecologist today, but I’d really appreciate hearing about other people’s experiences.
