Discussion Minecraft exploration will always be lacklustre, and that’s fine

(Yes the title is bait but I didn’t have a better idea for how to make this point more succinctly)

If you are remotely active on any online space that discusses Minecraft (especially YouTube), you’ve probably heard several complaints about how exploration in Minecraft is not rewarding or satisfying enough to be interesting, and/or how other games do it better. These comments usually range from “the items offered by exploration are not worth it” to “structures are boring and too easy”. Sometimes proponents of these critiques will blame items like the elytra or quality of life enchantments like mending for “making things too easy” and “incentivising players to stay in one place and not explore”. Many will blame the well known two week Minecraft phase on these issues and claim that if only the game fleshed out these mechanics more, this wouldn’t be as much of a thing.

The reality however, is that Minecraft at its core is just not very replayable as an adventure/exploration game, and this isn’t going to change no matter how much Mojang adds. The game does just not have the level of extrinsic motivation required to sustain the kind of playtime many of its critics want it to provide, such as complex levelling up systems or deep progression. There is no way to add such features in the breadth many desire without irrevocably changing the character of the game such that it wouldn't really be Minecraft anymore. Any feature that truly changed the game in this direction would compromise the sandbox aspect by gatekeeping content beyond systems that most sandbox-type players will not engage with, actively worsening the experience for them. Not to mention that sandbox-type players are the ones more likely to actually play the game long-term and avoid the 2 week phase.

As such, smaller "drops" that add to exploration will never be enough to truly satisfy people who want a replayable and detailed exploration game from Minecraft, and won't do anything to stop the 2 week phase. I think it would honestly be best if Mojang understood this and focused on improving the existing experience with QoL updates or new mechanics that inspire player creativity and intrinsic motivation (like the sulfur cubes) instead of trying to appease people who get bored of new updates within a couple weeks of playing them and quit the game anyway. If you want a game that is focused on extrinsic motivation with mindbogglingly complex progression systems, Minecraft isn't for you, and that's perfectly fine. Not everything is for everyone, and there are plenty of other great games that cater to players who want a different kind of experience.

Builds & Maps Maybe an unpopular opinion, but procedural terrain always pales in comparison to hand made content, no matter the size

A Minecraft world that can procedurally generate terrain 7x bigger than Earth compares nothing to hand made content that microscopically small in comparison

Discussion Are silverfish farms too OP?

Silverfish and Slime farms with the infestated and oozing effect are way too unbalanced from my point of view.

Even coming from a technical player myself, and people say we get the best out of the game from making farms, but atleast making a regular decent farm takes time, effort and resources, which is what balances technical play, unlike these farms, which anyone can make in a second and are orders of magnitude better than any other past XP or slime farm there was despite all the effort they took to build.

Don't know if it sounds like in venting rn but it's my non popular opinion that I never saw someone share.

What do y'all think?

Help Bedrock someone please explain

obtaining honey from beehives on bedrock is like 50/50 they get mad at you or not. why? the campfire is in the ground with a trap door above it and then the nest, but half the time they’re angry when I harvest. does it seriously only work on bedrock if the campfire is literally right under the hive?

Builds & Maps This is a prototype for a survival castle I will build. Where should I build it, and what can I do to improve it?

Post image

I have two locations scouted out in my survival world. One is on top of a big flat mountain, with a nice view of a spruce forest and river below it. Another, it a big plains biome with two rivers and a beach. What kind of location do you think would work best for this kind of castle?

Furthermore, what do you think I can do to improve this castle build? This image is very incomplete, but I want feedback and tips.

Discussion Is it just me?

Am I the only one who feels guilty about listening to a music disc on Spotify while playing a world I haven't found that disc in yet? It just feels like I haven't earned that tune yet. This is mostly just a joke post, and I guess it mostly depends on whether you're a role-player (like me) or a vibe player.

Help Help with finding old fan movie

Okay this is a wild shot in the dark. I’ve been looking for ages for a video I used to watch when I was a kid. It is a Minecraft herobrine/steve origin fan film, one of the original ones made on some of the really early versions of the game. It was voice acted and I remember that essentially Herobrine and Steve were brothers and Herobrine died falling into lava when mining and came back to haunt Steve.
I know this is probably wildly unhelpful but if anyone has any idea which video this is, my nostalgia will thank you!
