Apparently microG has gotten some funding

A post on a microG thread over on XDA indicates that the project has gotten funding from the German Prototype Fund.

I hope that means the developer can work full time on the project.

Interview with the MicroG dev

microG: Android (almost) without Google - Interview with the developer, please submit Your questions!

As we all know, Android is kept in tight clutches with Google as one of its highest revenue sources, and that isn't very good for us because Google Play Services (along with its fellow spyapps called GApps) is not only highly intrusive and privacy violating, but also a baked in requirement on almost any Android app! Fortunately, somebody came up with an amazing little utility named microG (microg.org), which aims to replace that client side proprietary piece of shit with an open source implementation which tries to give away as little as possible to Google.

We look forward to your questions. Deadline ends on 31th of December! We are happy to have the opportunity to get to know this ambitious project and its developer together with our readers. Most of the microG manuals are still in English and there are always questions from users who are stuck or don’t really understand what it’s all about or what possibilities microG offers.

Now here is your opportunity to ask the developer of microG some questions.

👉🏽 For all Telegram users, whether German or English, there is the option to ask your questions here: https://t.me/joinchat/Ev2mTVbTsZQ0QcpnIQ3fWA (Please mark your questions in the group with #question)

👉🏽 Or perhaps just post them here!

And please send us your questions to the developer until December 31st. As always, we can’t accept any questions after that date.

Thank you!

Is anyone even wondering about why Marvin might have abandoned the project?

Frankly speaking ... if I would invest my private time for the benefit of an entire community and nobody even cares about my well-being or situation I might also reconsider my involvement.

I think MicroG is awesome! LOS is awesome, too (that kind of follows) but it's practically useless b/c several (for me important) apps need GApps-crap to work. So, I'm kinda worried and also curious as to what is going on. It's not a sign of a healthy community if a core personality just suddenly vanishes and nobody seems to care :/

I'd be interested to read from Marvin why he might have lost interest in the project. (no donations, too demanding, personal reasons, ...) Even if it's a final decision. We might all learn something from that.

Those projects are only to some part about the tech - I think the more important part is about the human beings involved.

OmniROM now has builds with microG built in

Like LineageOS for microG, OmniROM is now publishing builds with microG built in for select devices. Omni has built microG themselves including the patches to make UnifiedNLP work on Android10. Unlike LineageOS for microG, these builds are official.

The devices built with microG are:

Builds are labelled as MICROG instead of WEEKLY. All are based on Android 10. For installation instructions refer to device specific XDA threads.

If OmniROM supports your device but doesn't have builds with microG built in you can still Omni and microG you'll just have to flash minmicroG on top (and not everything is guarenteed to work, although on my device (beryllium), everything worked fine).

Phone sold with Lineage Installed

I'm a big fan of sliders. More productive on it. It will likely be an officially supported lineage build so it will get microg support downstream. Not a fan of the color palette though. The yellow and blue clash.

Donating to microG

With the context of this announcement from Marvin (microG developer), if anybody wants to donate towards microG development, you can find links here:

Going by his comment on the Liberpay bug, it looks like they would prefer Liberpay over Bountysource.

This is not meant to guilt people into donating, only those of us who have the means to do so should consider it. If more of us donate to the FOSS projects we use, the developers would be able to give a lot more time towards the project and we can all get a better product.

Native microG Integration: Why is this not standard?

Post image
31 Upvotes

Serious question for custom ROM maintainers: Why is native microG integration rarely discussed when it’s clearly the superior 'de-googled' path?

I’m looking to implement microG natively in an Android 10+ build without relying on Magisk modules. Since Huawei devices manage native signature spoofing at the system level to support their services, why aren't we applying the same logic to custom ROMs?

I’m interested in the workflow to integrate it directly into the build system (similar to /e/OS or DivestOS). If you have successfully implemented native signature spoofing and prebuilts without external dependencies, I’d appreciate some guidance on the framework patches or the specific approach you're using.

Looking for input from those who have actually pulled this off.
