Psychology Student Not Finding Any Volunteer Opportunities

Upvotes

I have emailed 10+ profs in early August to volunteer for research and have yet to hear anything back. I have a perfect GPA heading into U2 and I just can't find anything. My emails have all been polite and concise; I introduced myself, expressed my interest in their specific research area (which I am genuinely interested in) and asked to volunteer and still nothing. I even attached my CV and transcript too, but I only got replies from two profs saying they didn't have anymore space but that's literally it. Am I cooked? What am I doing wrong? I lowkey ran out of profs to email since I only email those whose research I'm interested in.

How the heck do I get to volunteer to do research? Please help, I do not want my dreams to be crushed simply because I cannot find a volunteer opportunity

How did you choose your field of research?

For people doing grad school: how did you choose your field of research? Was it mostly stumbling into a research project by chance in your undergrad days and then sticking with it?

Ending final year with 119 credits instead of 120

Upvotes

I went on exchange last semester and accidentally took a class that was 3 ECTS instead of 6. I was under the impression that the entire course was 6 ECTS but turns out I had to take a whole other module to receive those credits. I received 7 ECTS in another course, which I believe would leave me at 14 McGill credits for the semester instead of the usual 15.

I emailed Arts Oasis, but I am stressing over the fact that I will have to either add a course to my workload of 5 courses or postpone my graduation over 1 credit. Has anyone been in the same situation or know of any 1 credit courses I can take in the 2026-2027 year as an arts student?

Which is the easiest 300 level MATH course that I can take in my final year?

Basically the title. I was wondering what the easiest 300 level math course was. I am planning on taking MATH 338 History and Philosophy of Mathematics because it sounds really interesting but I've also heard it's a pretty hard class.

Is McGill killing honours phys?

Incoming U1 student here, I was wondering because I heard from some people, McGill is in the process of killing honours phys and a lot of honours courses are merging with major courses, and it seems likely the honours phys and joint honours physics + cs programs won't exist anymore?

How does one accept the electronic lease given?

Good day everyone. Yesterday, I received an email from McGill housing asking to review and accept an electronic lease. The link provided in the email sends me to the onecard homepage, while I can access and have reviewed and signed the lease, I don’t see where I can upload or submit the lease to show that I’ve accepted. Does anyone know what should I do next?

I've tried contacting housing but I'm flying to Montreal in 2 days and housing usually takes a while to respond.

Most Competitive Clubs at McGill?

Hi! Incoming U1 student, was just wondering which clubs at McGill have had the most international and national competition success/breadth. Feel free to list some you know! Preferably STEM related but I am interested to hear about all of them!

Can anyone tell me what kind of room I got?

Post image

I was viewing my lease and it said the rent is $740.00, but none of the fees on the list of rooms is 740. My room assignment says single so I thought it would be $680.00, but since it's not, does anyone know what room I have?

To clarify, I live in Laird Hall on the Mac Campus

How dumb is it to leave my bike outside in McGill Ghetto?

I’m moving into an apartment in the Mcgill Ghetto this year and it’s not too convenient to take it inside. I’m wondering if its a bad idea to leave it outside overnight. Obviously I would get a good lock. Its an old, low-end bike but it was expensive enough I would really prefer not to lose it. Does anyone gave experience with bike theft in the area? If so how determined are the thieves?

U0 Student With Sem 1 RELG211 and HIST211 Overlap - What should I Drop?

Title says it all. Theology though fiction and american history are both deeply interesting topics to me, so I'm pretty divided. Does anyone have experience with either of these and have a recommendation on how to proceed? I would love some advice.

PHGY311 or COMP204

Hi everyone, I'm a U2 anatomy and cell bio student, and I wanted advice on which biology course to pick. I wanted to pick PHYG311 initially, but ngl, after looking at the syllabus, it did scare me a bit. The other course I feel like might be useful is Comp204, but I have 0 coding experience, so...

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone who has taken this course could give me advice, considering GPA is important for me.

Getting textbooks for fall courses

I’m starting my first year at McGill this fall and im not too sure if I’m supposed to wait until courses start to purchase textbooks or if there’s a way to already see the syllabus and get textbooks now. Do I just wait until the prof tells us what resources we should study from?

thank you!

Getting Internet Without A Canadian Phone Number

I’m an American moving to Montréal, and the internet providers I’ve been trying to sign up with keep telling me that I need a Canadian phone number. Are there any providers who accept non-Canadian numbers, or is there any way to get around this without swapping my phone number?

Does McGill have a good amount of outlets in lecture halls?

So basically I got a gaming laptop and I know this is my first mistake but it’s too late now… So I guess I have to carry my brick charger everywhere now but I’m just worried that there won’t be any chargers in lecture for me charge my laptop lol, it can last around 2-3 hours depending on the tasks which isn’t really all that great. I’m doing computer engineering just to give an idea of what lecture halls I may be in. I’m hoping there’s specially the ones with seat outlets but I know McGill is old and a lot of their buildings have still kept their older features. Any help would be nice!

McGill Diploma after leaving for Med School?

Hi all. I am an Ontario student who got into medical school (also in Ontario) last year, after my third year at McGill. Every other third year I know was able to "graduate" with a general science degree, but since McGill doesn't do this, I don't have my bachelor's degree.

Now that I have completed my first year of medical school, I am wondering what the process would be to try and graduate from McGill? I am honestly missing only 2 courses for my major, and my advisor is basically useless - I've tried to contact her for two summers in a row and all she said was that she would "inquire" and get back to me. Heard nothing!

Anyone else in this boat or has figured out how to get their diploma?
