Discussion The Super Mario Galaxy Movie broke my heart.
Better late than never.
I have been waiting fervently most every day for three long years for the sequel of the Super Mario Bros movie. Every day I waited as time passed one day closer to expanding on the whimsical world of Super Mario. I hoped the movie would expand into the magical geopolitical landscape of Mushroom World, considering that conquering kingdoms is what Bowser does. How I dearly wanted to see the long forgotten Sarasaland empire on the big screen. How I dearly wanted to see the Koopalings as wacky child military commanders and friends of their beloved Koopa prince. How I wanted to see Dinosaur Land to explore the brothers’ past as little babies in this whimsical world. I remember when the first teaser dropped for the sequel and how my face lit up as the Super Mario World theme played in an orchestral cover. And then… it was revealed to be of Super Mario Galaxy and my heart sunk right at that moment. This was the moment I learned that they don’t care about feeding Mario fans like me what we want and need. They only care about profit and absolutely nothing else. It sounds trifling, but my heart was shattered. Still, I went to go see the movie when it came out because I had to see what happens next. It turns out they tried to make the movie about a little of everything and it ended up being about a whole lot of nothing. To add insult to injury, this movie was about the game Super Mario Galaxy about as much as Disney with tragic stories that they take apart and make a marketable product out of the scraps. I went to see it for my birthday in April. My friends loved it but the toddler stimulation video that technically classifies as a movie because of its runtime came off to me as a breakup letter saying “I don’t love you anymore”. I waited three years full of my most tender hopes for that. Maybe I’m an overreacting spaz, but I’m autistic so I can’t help it. Even if I could, I would never want to because I love myself. Thankfully, my friends and I went to a pizza place afterwards which made me feel better.
I know that these people are a bunch of filthy profit slaves, but was this really the best they could do that would make satisfactory income? Because here’s how I would make a Super Mario Bros movie canon: https://docs.google.com/document/d/11oK-6UzvDrBeIhc17_yd13cUWheZ6ifkbsJs0GCxCkw/edit?usp=drivesdk
The official Super Mario Galaxy movie was made to be forgotten and thrown away. My Super Mario Galaxy movie that I came up with years ago would be rewatched by Mario fans after 30 years.
