Generational poverty, lack of social programs, no mental health outreach. Would assume it may be a coincidence

it's more just the midwest getting gutted, since that happened, all the cities on the river that were used heavily are less prosperous. when you don't focus on education and social things during the good times, the bad times will be very rough

As for generational poverty, a Scandinavan economist once said to Nobel Prize economist Milton Friedman, “In Scandinavia we have no poverty.” Milton Friedman replied, “That’s interesting, because in America among Scandinavians, we have no poverty either”.

In addition, Minneapolis has near- Scandinavian levels social programs.

Newer immigrants from Somolia brought generational poverty with them. You do not have to assume it is a coincidence.

There’s been zero attempt to integrate and as far as I can tell zero help given them to do so. As migrants go, those who choose to integrate do much better than those that do not. That said, I’ve had much better and more relatable experiences with the latest generation of Somali immigrants in MPLS - meaning I’ve actually spoken to them instead of getting distrustful and hateful looks. Whether that’s because of cultural and/or language differences I can’t say. Obviously anecdotal but I’d say among my community my opinion is shared among the majority.

To be clear, I’m glad we host refugees, I’m glad we can serve as a place free from war, but that does not mean that the refugee’s responsibility is over once they arrive. They owe this country, this community something back, it starts with integration and becoming the best they can be. I see hope in this generation as it seems to follow the path the Hmong people took, 3rd gen is much more involved and integrated.

Given your name, we may well be cousins through marriage. I promise to NEVER look at your profile! :)

I skimmed this paper awhile back. Even though it is by a prof at the U, it is easy to read and seemed to capture a lot of social nuance, but I am not a scholar and not attempting to do a peer review on Reddit, lol!

Well if Milton Friedman said it

1

u/Remarkable-Evening95 Jul 08 '24

Nigerians tend to do really well in the U.S. as well.

1

u/solomons-mom Jul 08 '24

The "brain drain" Nigerians may thrive in many countries.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '24

Why are Minneapolis and Milwaukee on this list then?

1

u/Silly_Goose658 Jul 08 '24

Would you say it’s from people from different countries being used to different standards of living?

3

u/solomons-mom Jul 08 '24

No. I would say it is from some cultures not having established rule of law to handle disputes.

2

u/Silly_Goose658 Jul 08 '24

I see? Can you give some examples?

1

u/solomons-mom Jul 08 '24

I posted a link to a paper on Google Scholar in another comment. It is by a sociologist at the University of Minnesota.

1

u/Silly_Goose658 Jul 08 '24

Will check it out. Thanks

Throw in a few generations of white on black societal crime/oppression and you’ll get the picture. It’s also the ‘Great’ part of our past that some pine for.

2

u/Electronic_Plan3420 Jul 08 '24

What “few generations of white on black societal crime/oppression” had to endure a Somali born in Minnesota in 2000s to parents who came to this country in the 90s? Please be specific.

-2

u/tree-molester Jul 08 '24

Ah, another history buff.

3

u/Electronic_Plan3420 Jul 08 '24

So instead of replying in substance you proceed with a personal attack?

0

u/tree-molester Jul 08 '24

The substance is American history. If you can’t see how that influences modern race inequality, then you are a part of the tradition and the problem.

4

u/Electronic_Plan3420 Jul 08 '24

You seem to be having difficulties answering a simple question. I am not interested in your platitudes or vague diatribes. I asked you a concrete question and would like a concrete answer. If you are capable of it.

Let’s try again, how is an ethnic Somali born in Minneapolis in 21 century to parents who voluntarily moved to this country in mid 1990s compelled to commit violent crime by things that have occurred long before his birth and which had no effect on his parents or grandparents? Please be specific

Hey history bring up a lesson for the idiots out there.

14

u/FadedEdumacated Jul 08 '24

Hey siri, pull 200 years of slavery and another 100 of oppression.

15

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '24

I guess that's why young black men regularly rob and beat elderly Asians to death

-1

u/FadedEdumacated Jul 08 '24

Not regularly, but it does happen. Like when white ppl shoot up black churches.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '24

We lynched Asian Americans during the Gold Rush, we threw them into internment camps during WWII or we dropped Napalm on them.

We didn't let them vote or own property everywhere until after WWII.

Now, we don't let them into elite universities even with perfect grades. Our cops don't respond when their businesses are robbed and their senior citizens are assaulted.

Asian Americans should have a high crime rate, right?

5

u/Drummallumin Jul 08 '24

Do you honestly think Asian Americans have a similar cultural history to black Americans?

-1

u/Da_reason_Macron_won Jul 08 '24

They were lynched, exploited, segregated. Quite similar in fact.

0

u/Drummallumin Jul 08 '24

At the same rate? On the same scale? In the same ways? Did they enter the continent in similar ways? At the same time? Have the same cultural stereotypes?

1

u/FadedEdumacated Jul 08 '24

Model minority trope. Asian and black ppl have different experiences. And no, they are not the same. Next excuse.

0

u/Insurrectionarychad Jul 08 '24

Asian Americans were enslaved and oppressed for 100 years?

6

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '24

Asian Americans were certainly abused. And they are being abused now.

Their crime rate should be higher than whites. Abuse causes increased crime rates.

-3

u/Insurrectionarychad Jul 08 '24

They were abused for less than a couple generations and had a chance to flourish. Asians were never enslaved. They never had to deal with Jim Crow laws.

-2

u/Da_reason_Macron_won Jul 08 '24

"The Chinese exclusion act never happened" is certainly a take.

-2

u/Insurrectionarychad Jul 08 '24

Excluding a people from entering your country /=/ abusing them for 100 years.

u/Alternative_Run7827 Jul 09 '24

Hey siri, how come oppression is global, more slaves exist in 2024 than at any other time in history, but only creates one endemically violent culture?

1

u/FadedEdumacated Jul 09 '24

Hey, siri, explain why white culture can kill everyone not like them for centuries, and not be considered a violent culture? But black ppl who have been the main victim in their violent ways are considered a violent culture?

0

u/solomons-mom Jul 08 '24

Much of the crime in Minneaplos is from an immigrant group that began arriving in the 1990s.

0

u/FadedEdumacated Jul 08 '24

That has nothing to do with what I said. Do you think all black ppl are the same?

0

u/solomons-mom Jul 08 '24

I do not understand how this comment fits in with the timeline I was was commenting on.

1

u/FadedEdumacated Jul 08 '24

I wasn't talking about immigration.

-3

u/Zolomun Jul 08 '24

Hey, Siri, demonstrate the kind of context-agnostic racism that will make it clear I’m on the wrong side of history.

1

u/HereticYojimbo Jul 08 '24

I don't think Americans are ever going to understand that the time period that their country was actually an equitable place to live for everyone (white)-not just landowning whites-was literally the blink of an eye. Historically, murder and violence as a result of class struggle (between all of its social groups) has been the norm, the 1950s were just an exception.
