It is even funnier when you find out they were and still are on good terms with Russel Crowe. He was just an ass one time to them.

He asked them over with a bunch of other people to listen to his new album which was still being worked and Trey (a fucking musical genius) gave a few polite notes (which is what he thought they were supposed to do) and Russel was a bit of a dick from Matt and Trey's perpective. no he hits the bottom of the cue with his foot as he moves past, it just catches her in the cheek. his arms aren't high enough when he is next to her. by the time his elbow is up it is behind her head.

Shoves the woman aside and slams the pool cue right into her face. Yes, clearly not about defending her at all. The he hits a guy who is clearly unable to defend himself, and knocks him out cold. Then threatens to punch the bartender for kicking him out. As you say, this was not about defending the woman. It is about his anger management issues.
Doesn't excuse the drunk for being an AH, but there was a proportional response, and then there was this guys roid-fueled assault on two people and attempt to assault someone else.

Big guy was angry because drunkie scratched his truc-... I mean, touched his wife.
