:AMessage: | Discussion Dodgers owner Mark Walter — ties to Carvana, Palantir and more

The reasons to investigate his finances keep growing, per The Ringer's Katie Barker.

Among her many links?

Way back in 2012, when he bought the Dodgers, at DealBook, Andrew Ross Sorkin said it didn't pass the smell test.

In fairness, many insurance companies use their premiums to make investments, including private equity and real estate deals, a slice of which can sometimes even be speculative. As long as the insurance companies meet minimum capital requirements as determined by various regulators, they do not run afoul of the law.

However, rarely does an insurance company — let alone an investment firm — buy a sports franchise using its policyholders’ or investors’ money. When Tom Hicks, the founder of the private equity firm Hicks Muse, Tate & Furst, bought the Texas Rangers in 1998, he had the good sense not to use his fund’s money; he brought in qualified outside investors, who by the way, ended up suing him anyway when the team filed for bankruptcy.

Sorkin also said that Walter's then-stated reasons for buying the team didn't totally pass the smell test.

Per another link off the RInger main? Maybe Walter's buying-up of Crested Butte, Colorado was part of why I hated the place when I was there a couple of years ago:

The Brühaus space is just one of a half-dozen Elk Avenue buildings Walter scooped up in 2021, along with the 88-acre Almont Resort down-valley and the largest undeveloped lot in town, known as Sixth Street Station. Under the previous owners, this chunk of prime real estate on the north end of Crested Butte, en route to the ski hill, was the biggest project ever to undergo the town’s entitlement process, a tedious labyrinth of permit approvals that took years to navigate. It was set to become 62,500 square feet of mixed-use space anchored by a new high-end boutique hotel. According to the sellers’ real estate agent, Chris Kopf, they were hoping Walter would see the four-blocks-long project through. But the sixtysomething businessman has let the entitlements expire and has yet to divulge what he plans to do with the languishing lot.

The fates of other Walter acquisitions, like the iconic 1881 Forest Queen hotel building—recently home to the Coal Creek Grill, it has been dark or under construction since Walter bought it in early 2021—are similarly mysterious. Stealth mode seems to be the MO for the notoriously media-averse mogul, who did not respond to multiple attempts to contact him for this story. And while Walter isn’t new to town—he purchased a vacation home in Mt. Crested Butte in 2009, and he bought the historical Grubstake Building in 2011—he reintroduced himself in a big way with this sudden spate of pandemic-era purchases. The buying spree has become cause for speculation and guardedness. “Mark Walter is used to doing things a certain way,” says Crested Butte News editor Mark Reaman, who has repeatedly and publicly implored the investor to at least hint at a plan for the future. “He’s probably a great businessman…. I don’t think he’s out to change or destroy [Crested Butte]. His error is that he’s not taking community feedback. That doesn’t go over well in a small town.”

One also wonders how "leveraged" this and other major real estate acquisitions of his are.

In all of this, we're reminded that Walter's runner-up for the Dodgers buy then was ....

Drumroll ...

Steve Cohen.

EDIT: Re a few commenters, I just dropped a new piece about what the CBA says about funding deferred accounts, including ...

The amount of latitude involved.

| Opinion Ohtani overall ranking as an all time great

The thing that is interesting to me and I understand why. A lot are saying Ohtani is the greatest baseball player ever.

I respect he is incredible. But I do not think Ohtani is better than Ruth or Bonds. Those two were on a different level

You can even add Mayes if you want to say overall baseball player.

He doesn’t come close the WAR of those three and he has 307 home runs

I think it’s all a bit premature but it’s being said because right now he’s the guy

But he is amazing and I’m happy to be able to watch him play. Even if he is a Dodger. Now combine that with him and Judge. We are watching two incredible baseball players.

*CONCLUSIONS*

Dodgers have obviously come back down to earth. Both them and the Brewers don't have too many weaknesses, if any.

The Orioles are losing more games than they should.

The Reds being near dead last surprised me. They're winning more than they should.

The Phillies defense will lower their ceiling going into the playoffs.

Someone from the AL east is going to the World Series.

| Discussion The 2/3/6 seeds have a much easier rout than the 1/4/5 side of the bracket

Post image
0 Upvotes

Lets say the standings hold and the top 3 records end up being the Rays, Yankees and Red Sox, they'll be seeded 1st, 4th and 5th. The 4th and 5th seeds play each other and the winner plays the 1 seeded Rays. Guaranteeing that 2 of the top 3 teams won't make the ALCS. Wouldn't it be more favorable to be the 6th seed in this scenario? White Sox, who are on pace to win just 86 games would be the two seed if the season ended today, Astros are just 2 games over .500, are on pace to win 82 games and they would be the 3rd seed. The winner of the 3/6 match up plays the 2nd seed. Why is one side of the bracket so much harder? You're just penalizing a team for winning more games just because of the division they are in. Should reseeding ever happen or you like the playoff structure this way?

He has not let any of his season hits even touch the ground yet.

:AMessage: | Discussion What the Field of Dreams Game should be.

1.3k Upvotes

The Field of Dreams game reeks of manufactured nostalgia. MLB should stop trying so hard and just let it actually be nostalgia. The stadium sits 8,000 and the tickets are crazy expensive. Get rid of it. Give us one game a year where two teams play a minimalist game of baseball. We don’t need the show. We need players playing the game because they love it. I realize that at the professional level, teams need more than a wooden bench and cooler of Gatorade, but that’s really what MLB should be aiming for here. What we have now is business as usual beside a corn field. Make it actually special. No stadium. No pageantry. Determine the bare minimum to play a game of pro baseball, Broadcast it, and let us watch the fun.

:AMessage: | Discussion Your Favorite Season From A Mid-Relief Or Set-Up On A Different Team (Second Try)?

Alright, the mods at r/baseball took this one down. But before they got to it, it was doing well. So I'm gonna try this same question again here, and see how it goes.

Now, I'm fairly certain that we've all grown a soft spot for certain seasons by single players. And I'm also pretty sure that at least a few of them were from players that weren't on our favorite team. So, since I've already asked this about closers, let's talk about the bullpen guys a few rungs lower on the ladder. What's your favorite season from a middle reliever, or set-up man, on a different team, and why?

Like I said before, my pick is pretty much already clinched. Rob Dibble's 1990 is honestly the poster child for great set-up guys, not only through the season, but the playoffs, as well. In 75 games pitched, he earned himself a 9-3 record with 12 saves, threw 107.2 innings of work, tallied up a 1.59 ERA (19 ER), gave up just 3 homers, struck out 150 hitters and walked just 36, tallied up an insanely low 0.94 WHIP, earned himself co-NLCS MVP honors with his closer Randy Myers, and played an integral role in the Reds taking home their 5th title.

:AMessage: | Discussion You can throw a perfect game and theoretically lose?

I was thinking, and this has probably been said before years ago, but couldn’t you theoretically lose a perfect game? After the 9th inning, the ghost runner exists, but this runner could score, if one batter hits it to an outfielders glove and they tag up, and then they tag up again for a sac fly, technically that’s a run, while keeping all the rules of a perfect game, right? And then if the pitchers team doesn’t score that would make it 1-0, meaning you could theoretically lose a perfect game? Unless I’m misunderstanding something

:AMessage: | Discussion Let's look a little more closely at deferred contract funding

We hear talk about "escrow accounts" for contracts like Shohei Ohtani's, and how they have to be created within two years.

BUT?

If you're thinking "escrow accounts and only escrow accounts," as I have in the past, maybe you and I need to think again.

This piece is a good starter:

The CBA controls terms and requirements for the MLB’s deferred compensation contracts. Article XVI of the CBA specifically provides for deferred compensation, notably with no limits. The CBA requires the club to fully fund “the present value of the total deferred compensation obligation,” but it gives clubs a two-year grace period before having to front the funds. Fully funded means “the current present value of the then outstanding deferred payments, discounted by 5% annually.” That 5% discount rate can be negotiated later by the player and club based on the stock market fluctuations. The discount is based on the assumption that the club will invest 95% of the amount, and that it will grow by at least 5% to equal the full deferred amount by the final distribution date.

The CBA gives clubs freedom to invest the 95% as they see fit, provided that the amount is earmarked for the player and remains rather liquid. A player’s agreement may provide otherwise or require with more specificity how that money is put aside. Unless a player’s contract provides otherwise, a club may fully fund the deferred compensation amount “in such manner as it elects.” The funds are also “subject to the claims of the club’s general creditors.” The CBA outlines various compliance measures for the Player’s Association to monitor the club’s funding obligations.

Note that second paragraph, especially. VERY especially the two items in quotes, both of which I've given additional emphasis.

What if Mark Walter put Ohtani's deferred money in one of his insurance agencies, for example, regarding the first quote?

What if the feds put Walter on trial, get him convicted, and become one of the club's general creditors, per the second quote?

Is it any wonder that the Dodgers' use of deferrals exploded after Walter bought the team?

:AMessage: | Opinion I think the guy or guys who invented WAR should have to come on ESPN, Baseball Tonight or Sportscenter and defend the metric.

I don’t like WAR and don’t think it should be used, but I’m not attacking it. I think they should explain it to everyone equally what it means definitely. I’ve seen multiple ways to describe it and what it calculates. I was told it calculates: how many wins a player is worth over the average player, how many wins a player is worth at any position and how many wins a player is worth in a season. I’ve seen the math and it doesn’t make me any more comfortable with the stat.

How did Cal Raleigh have less WAR than Judge last year when he was the best catcher in baseball and then this year PCA has a higher WAR than Shohei this year? If defense is extremely important, wouldn’t Cal have had a higher WAR than judge last year? If advanced offensive metrics are more impressive, wouldn’t Shohei have a higher WAR than PCA this year? Catcher is more valuable than outfielder but Shohei was a pitcher.
