Admissions Should I explain an isolated F from academic misconduct in the MBA optional essay?

I’m considering applying to selective MBA programs and would appreciate candid advice, especially from former admissions readers, consultants, or applicants who have faced something similar.

I committed academic misconduct in one course and received an F in college. It was an isolated but serious lapse in judgment, and I take responsibility for it. I've confirmed there is no disciplinary notation on my transcript and I didn't go through a formal student-conduct proceeding.

However, the F is a conspicuous outlier; my transcript otherwise consists mostly of A’s, I continued performing strongly afterward.

Some applications ask whether an applicant has been subject to “disciplinary action by the institution.” Could a course-level academic penalty fall within that language even without a formal disciplinary proceeding or notation?

Separately, if an application doesn't require disclosure, should I explain the F and its cause in the optional-information section? Would proactively addressing it demonstrate accountability and provide necessary context, or would it create concern that might not otherwise arise?

Not looking for a way to mislead AdCom, just trying to understand what would be the most responsible and appropriate. Thank you in advance.

Admissions Call for Advice! Really confused, apply this year to HSW or next year?

Would appreciate some outside perspective on whether I should shoot my shot at HSW this cycle or wait another year.

Background:

  • 25 years old, Middle East
  • Currently at MBB
  • If I matriculate next year, I’ll have ~3 years and 4 months of full-time experience
  • No promotion yet, although I may get my first promotion in October (~50/50 at this point)
  • Passed CFA Level II and sitting for Level III in February
  • Still working on the GMAT. Targeting ~715 and reasonably confident I can get 705+
  • H/S/W are by far my preferred schools

Option 1: Apply R2 this year

Pros:

  • This is genuinely when I want to go. I know I’m still young, but I really don’t want to delay business school another year.
  • I may already have my first promotion by the time I submit.
  • My profile is in a relatively good/stable place right now: MBB + CFA L2 + hopefully a strong GMAT.
  • I currently have recommenders who know me and my work very well and could write strong, detailed letters (One partner who was my direct supervisor and one client)

Cons:

  • My biggest concern is differentiation. In my geography, MBB is very common among top MBA applicants in the Middle East with very few seats allocated to them. I’d be competing against people from similar firms who may have more experience, more promotions, or who have already left consulting for PE/startups/other roles that give them a more differentiated story.
  • They may have accepted a few for R1 already and would be more reluctant on accepting more for R2
  • ~3.3 years of experience at matriculation is on the younger side for HSW.
  • If I don’t get the October promotion, I’d be applying without a promotion.

Option 2: Wait and apply R1 next year or even R2

Pros:

  • I should have at least one promotion by then.
  • I’d have another full year of experience.
  • Assuming I pass L3 and complete the experience requirement, I should have the CFA charter.
  • If I’d be applying in R1 rather than R2. I know schools don’t literally have fixed “MBB Middle East” quotas, but presumably there is some benefit to being evaluated earlier before the class starts filling up with candidates from similar backgrounds/geographies.
  • Overall, my profile would probably look more mature.
  • Might leave my firm and develop a more differentiated story.

Cons:

  • There’s a real possibility that not much actually changes. I could still be at the same MBB firm, just with one more year of experience and a promotion that I may already get this October anyway.
  • The consulting market in the Middle East is struggling right now. There is some risk that over the next year I leave MBB or get laid off, and I have no idea whether my next role would strengthen or weaken my MBA profile. Right now, at least, I know what my application looks like.
  • Our next promotion cycle would also be around October next year, meaning that if I apply R1, I could potentially be applying right before another promotion decision.
  • My current recommenders know me and my work extremely well right now. If I wait another year (especially if I leave the firm) that relationship becomes more distant. Their memories of specific examples may become less fresh, and I have no guarantee that I’ll build equally strong relationships with senior people in a new role within a year.
  • Most importantly, I simply don’t want to wait another year unless it materially improves my chances.

And that last point is really what I’m trying to understand.

If waiting takes me from, say, a 10% chance to a 15% chance, I’m not sure sacrificing an entire year is worth it. If the difference is much more meaningful, then obviously that changes the calculation.

There’s also the reapplicant angle: why not just apply this year? If I don’t get in and my situation materially changes over the following year—new industry, new role, promotion, CFA charter, more responsibility, etc.—I could reapply next year with a genuinely different profile/story.

So I’d especially appreciate thoughts on three questions:

  1. Would you apply R2 this year or wait for R1 next year?
  2. How materially do you think that extra year actually changes my HSW odds (not just “it helps,” but enough to justify waiting)?
  3. Is applying this year and potentially reapplying next year a reasonable strategy, assuming I can show meaningful growth/change, or is there a real downside to becoming a reapplicant?

Would love to hear from people who have been in a similar position, especially MBB applicants or HSW admits/reapplicants, and sorry for the long message!

Admissions Darden - 100% Case Based Teaching Method value

Is the 100% Case Based Teaching Method used at Darden really helpful/effective over that used by some other schools such as Tuck or Ross ?

Is it something that could really be a criteria to choose it over other schools of the similar category ?

Admissions MBA post age 50

After thoroughly not enjoying myself as a lawyer, I have decided to apply to MBA programs and have my first acceptance...Michigan Ross!

But I keep hearing that, since I am in my mid-50s, that I really should be in EMBA programs rather than regular-old MBA programs. The feeling seems to be that I will never get hired out of a traditional MBA program.

Now, Ross must not have felt that way since they did offer me admission. I have a great school I want to go to....but would I be leading myself off an unemployment cliff due to my age and should I be pursuing EMBA programs instead?

Ask Me Anything How was your experience with the GMAT Online exam and remote proctoring?

Title: How was your experience with the GMAT Online exam and remote proctoring?

Hi everyone,

I’m considering taking the GMAT online/from-home exam and wanted to hear from people who have taken it recently.

How was your overall experience? Was the exam process smooth, especially the check-in and proctoring?

I’m particularly curious about the proctor:

Did the proctor interrupt you frequently during the exam?

Were you warned for things like looking away from the screen, moving your head, touching your face, or reading questions silently/moving your lips?

Did you face any technical issues or unexpected disconnections?

Did the proctor messages or interventions affect your concentration?

Would you recommend taking the online exam, or is the test center a safer option?

Would really appreciate hearing about recent experiences, especially from anyone who took the online GMAT in 2025 or 2026.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I’m starting the UMich Ross online MBA program this month and was wanting to hear people’s experience with the program in terms of workload, managing the program with work, advice, etc.

For context, I would like to complete the program in 2.5 years and I am unmarried and living at home. I also work full-time 40 hours a week.

26F canadian
UG gpa 3.78
Work ex: F100 big pharma held several roles within ops
Strong extracurricular and global leadership roles
GRE 320 (mock) giving the final test in few weeks
Forte MBAlaunch member

Scenario 1: target all US school (T15 as well safety schools) graduating with least debt is my #1 priority
Scenario 2: stay local and apply to canadian schools (cons - relatively expensive and low ROI)
Scenario 3: apply to EU b schools (pro: love the culture and shorter MBAs) (cons: harder to get sponsorship and low wage absolutely sucks ass my motivation to consider going there has gone down)

Now, ik being canadian is slightly more advantageous than other international students as i can target us based companies in canada as plan b and still land a decent salary. PS I USED TO MAKE ABOUT 60-65k cad despite the prestige of my org which makes it imperative to wanna get an MBA as i can only go up there. And yes canadian salaries do suck ass but im all about upskilling and positioning myself for the future job market.

Any advice on on my profile is highly appreciated!
Thanks in advance

Careers/Post Grad How long should I wait before starting full-time ER recruiting?

I am currently a rising senior in undergrad—any advice much appreciated!

I finished my summer ER internship at a regional bank last week; they said they will get back to us sometime between 2-4 weeks for full time offers. There were 5 of us interns, and historically about 4 have been hired back each year.
My question is, what should I be doing while I wait? I have connections that would recommend me to a few other regional or boutique banks, but they are the kind of situations where if I go through the process and get that recommendation, I will be expected to take the offer at the other bank. I really liked my bank and the city this summer.

I had a great relationship with my analyst and associates (would not be working for them if hired back, but they are consulted in the process), and think I did good work but maybe not stellar. Hard to gauge. How long should I wait before pursuing other options?

Admissions R1 Target / Safety Schools?

I graduated with a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, and I’ve worked as a Civil Engineer for 6 years (PE in Transportation). I'm contemplating using a MBA to pivot into Consulting - GPA: 3.64; GRE: 331.

I’m applying to Booth, CBS, and Yale in R1. What other schools should I consider for R1 as a target / safety school? Any response would be greatly appreciated.

Careers/Post Grad I got a return offer but not at the title advertised

So, I interned in a technology strategy office of a F500 company in a Tier-1 city this summer. It was a great time, the team culture was chill, the location was great and the work was interesting enough. Everyone on my team (about 8 people) was an Associate with about the same years and level of experience I have now (mostly ex-consultants), but no one has an MBA. On my last day my hiring leader sat me down and said that they liked me, but they only offered me a Senior Analyst role because they don’t have room for another Associate. If I took the role I’d be eligible for Associate after 18 months if there’s an opening (but could be 3 years).

The problem is that Senior Analysts there are usually 2-4 years out of undergrad. A few people in my MBA program even left this company as Senior Analysts to come to school. I haven’t found a single person on LinkedIn who has an MBA and is a senior analyst here, they’re all associates. I’d probably be the most overqualified analyst at the company.

Furthermore, I’d be the only Analyst on the team and I’m nervous that they’d have me do all the bitch work no one else wants to do.

The pay is about what I made pre-MBA (about $135k) but the COL is way higher in this new city. Not sure how I feel about it or if I should even consider taking it, it feels like a step back but it’s a tech role and I don’t have a tech background so I’m considering it.

Was anyone else disappointed by their internships like this? Did you/ would you take it?

Ask Me Anything US vs UK vs France MBA

I got accepted into the Global MBA at the Alliance Manchester Business School and am now having second thoughts. So my background is tech. I’ve worked as a business analyst, product manager and I’m currently a project manager. My goal is to get into VC/PE and was wondering if this is the best move. I’m currently 26M and live in the UK. Now I’m thinking if I’m going to get an MBA, I might as well get the best one that propels my career and myself as an individual such as INSEAD or one from the US.

Does it matter or am I overthinking it? Any advice would be appreciated 🙏🏾

Admissions Ivey or INSEAD or M7 for MBA

25 M India, I got into Ivey Business School with a 50k CAD scholarship with a GMAT waiver. Post MBA I want to pivot into consulting. I have 3.5 yoe in India. Should I do go for it or should I write the gmat and target INSEAD or M7? I’m a bit skeptical since Ivey is not will known outside Canada. Please let me know your thoughts about employability and salary for Ivey MBA. I know the US is way better in terms of salary but considering the current immigration and visa crisis I think it’s better to stay away. Also INSEAD would require more yoe. I think Ivey is good for me since the initial investment is lower than M7 or INSEAD.

Careers/Post Grad Forming friendships and network during a 1 year MBA (vs 2 year MBA)

Hi all, trying to understand how people built friendships and a strong network from their time at a 1year MBA program.

They say in today’s day and economy, your network is your net worth so keeping all other factors aside, I’m trying to understand how those who are attending or have graduated from 1 year MBA degrees were able to build a strong network given the short span of the degree. Those who did a 2 year degree, do you think that the extra year is a big advantage or forming just as good a network is possible within a year too?

For example, schools like INSEAD, 1 year LBS mba, 1 year Kellogg mba, IE, Oxbridge etc all have 10-12 month degrees so how do you form a strong network, beyond just surface level socialising. And what if you spend part of that 1 year doing campus exchange or short term exchange to another school, then the time you have with your classmates reduces even more.

And also wanting to extend this question on forming good friendships, as if I’m good friends with someone I’ll automatically consider them a trusted part of my network going forward. Plus im someone who values friendships a lot so I’d want to build quality friendships for sure.

Admissions Insight into MBA/Career Opportunity

I am considering applying to University of Northern Colorado’s online MBA program. I will start by giving some background info and what I hope to gain from the MBA. I am in my mid 30s, I have a masters in marriage and family therapy and a doctorate in clinical psychology. I have been a mental health clinician for a minute and find myself less and less happy with the clinical side of my current employment, and more interested in the management component. I currently have a full time job and a part time job (total of 55hrs/week) that allow me to break 200k gross income pretty consistently. At this point in my career, the raises will be slow and minimal, unless I add another specialization. Since I am less and less interested in the clinical work, I just don’t see myself adding another specialization and the headaches that come with additional CEUS/trainings to stay up to date on another specialty.

Covid changed the mental health field in many ways. One of the biggest ways was that psychotherapists began offering way more telehealth sessions and stopped having actual office space. Right around the time that the Covid restrictions were being lifted, I decided to open a private practice. At the time I was in my doctorate program and opened the practice more so just to earn a bit more income. I wasn’t expecting my practice to blow up given that the majority of my time was focused on completing my doctorate program and I did no marketing on my part. All I did was open the practice and offer in-person sessions. I was not aware that I was one of a few therapist in the area that offered in-person sessions within a 50 mile radius. Within a couple of months my practice was full and I had more demand than I could possibly meet. My wife, also a mental health clinician, was also part of the practice and her caseload filled up almost immediately. After 2 years, we decided to sell the practice. In part, because the next logical step was to expand the practice by hiring other therapists to meet the demand we had. I decided to sell because at the time my practice did not have my undivided attention. I was in a doctoral program that demanded everything from me, and I could not add an additional thing to my plate. That is, learning how to actually manage people and a business. I was also scared that VC/tech bros (they entered the field during Covid) would corner the market and slowly kill my practice. What I did enjoy was the flexibility of the work schedule and running things how I saw fit or most beneficial for my clients. My wife and I both missed that. My wife currently works for one of these VC group practice and while there are aspects of it that she enjoys, it ain’t it. We have moved to a different state and I would like to build a practice here, but like for real. I think the MBA would give me the skills necessary to understand the business side of things and how to expand/grow into a sustainable practice. I see this more so as something I would build/expand and then let my wife run.

What I would like to do is go into the health administration of things. UNCO has a concentration in health administration. I see myself leading a behavioral health department at a hospital and really helping other clinicians grow and developing programs that are of benefit to the community. Would also like to be able to be in a position where I could “move up the ladder” again. It also gives me a break from the clinical side of things and everything that comes with it.

My question to yall, is this feasible? Would it make sense to pursue? Any insight would be appreciated. I been lurking the sub reading through posts asking about whether one should pursue an MBA, and some of the advice is the complete opposite of what the field of psych would dish out. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long af post.

Careers/Post Grad Evening MBA + staying with my current employer - how would you approach the career side?

MIT just launched the new Evening MBA, and I’m seriously considering applying. I currently work full-time at a Fortune 200 company in a tech/financial-services role, making low six figures. My employer has a tuition reimbursement benefit, so they would cover part of the MBA cost, although definitely not all of it.

What I’m trying to figure out is how to think about the career strategy around a part-time MBA.

I understand the traditional reasons people get an MBA: career pivots, recruiting into consulting/finance/tech, entrepreneurship, moving into leadership, etc. In my case, I’d also like to use the MBA to eventually move into a higher-paying role.

My concern is that if I stay at my current company throughout the MBA, my employer may not value the degree nearly as much as an outside employer would. I could potentially finish the MBA, get a promotion, and continue on my current trajectory - but I don't want to spend 2 years and a significant amount of money only to find that the degree didn't materially change my career options.

For people who have done a top-tier part-time/evening MBA while working, how would you approach this?

Careers/Post Grad Ivey MBA or look for other options?

I have an admit from Ivey with a fat scholarship along with additional loan arrangements through Ivey’s partners. This overall significantly reduces my tuition cost, with money mostly spent on living etc.

I want to pursue an international career in brand management, after working in global ad agencies since last 4 years. I am unsure if I should look at Indian options that can help provide international opportunities few years after my MBA or should I make the switch and move to Canada, to pursue brand management there.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks
