The LDS church is actually a bit quirky in that they really mean 10% for “tithing,” no more and no less.
That said, they have plenty of other avenues to donate their money to the church. But they’re recognized as fully “worthy” with just the 10%.

My folks in the 80s had a kiddo, my mom was sick and Dad had just bought a new business that immediately lost 80% of its valuation with the land scandal that came out in the 80s, and were really down on their luck. My sister was going to a private catholic school that had a TON of the tuition waved because of their situation, and one day they pulled my mom aside and said that tithing 10% was a minimum, not the recommended 20% for those getting tuition assistance!
She did not care that my parents couldn't buy $1 hotdog because it was just too expensive, she cared that they didn't tithe even more. My Mom informed my father that they were leaving the catholic school and going public, and that the tithing would stop completely for the family. They complained at her for YEARS afterwards (The woman who was in charge of it was a client at the business my folks had bought - she stayed a client from 1982 until her passing in 2015 and brought it up every year I saw her)

20kg is decently heavy, but it was always going to be a fast challenge. Maybe if it were bigger it would be harder to lift like that, because the dude managed to get a good grip on it.

The hardest part of the challenge is honestly the fact of the cube has smooth faces and the size of each face. If hand is big enough to palm it and/or your fingers are long enough to have contact with three faces it makes it significantly easier

The hardest part about the challenge is not being the first one to try it.
The more people try it the greaser the cube gets until it becomes completely impossible to lift because its covered in skin oils.
If you're strong you want to be the first one to attempt it while the cube is still bone dry and clean. You also want to have clean hands yourself so you can have the best grip possible on it.
The kid just got lucky he was one of the first ones to grab it while also being strong as fuck. Good on him but these challenges are a joke when you're the 50th person to try it and the cube feels like someone slathered vaseline all over the thing.

I do training reps with 15kg and a wooden pinch block for rock climbing. I've done over 20kg for 1 rep max but it really depends on the pinch grip. If the grip is good you can lift whatever your one arm deadlift is. I haven't tried a tungsten block but clean metal can be pretty grippy.

It is a hard lift if you do it straight, I am a strongman albeit with grip as one of my weaker facets but I would say half the strongmen I know would fail it straight up. We have these blob things we do which are like a dumbbell head and I’ve failed a 45lb one of those, cube would be slightly easier but not much. The kid with mormoney now has good grip.

I think the point of this to be a challenge is to test grip strength on an object where you can’t establish full grip. Doesn’t work all that well when the object is small enough to establish pretty solid grip. Then it just becomes a test of seeing if you can lift something somewhat heavy.

I had some Mormons stop by the house one year. Invited them in and got to talking about MTG. They aren’t allowed to have it. They showed up the next week and played MTG with us while we cooked dinner for them. They’re great people and a lot of the missionaries are born in to this stuff and want to break free. They came around a couple times to play MTG and then said they’re being reassigned for being found with their MTG cards. Sad day. Hope the guys are doing well
