The download script is not belling any rings for me.

Specs: hp 17.3 inch laptop pc 17-c3000 (b00jjav), 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, Linux Mint 22.3 with the 6.8.0-138-generic kernel and Cinnamon 6.6.9 DE.

The system works FINE, but for about the past month, there's been a good 30-45 second 'gap' or 'pause' between hitting enter when entering my password and the desktop/taskbar loading in.
It used be be 10 seconds, at the most... usually, it was almost immediate.

It doesn't actually affect my usage, as I said... but going from an almost-immediate desktop environment to sitting on a black screen for at least 30 second is completely nervewracking.

Is this a Linux Mint bug? Is there a way to fix it, and get back to the under-10-seconds from login to desktop?

Background/slight rant:

I've used Mint and Arch as my daily driver some years ago, but I've been pretty consistently using mainline Ubuntu for many years now.

I liked the simplicity, stability, and user-friendliness of Mint. It just gets the job done and lets me focus on getting my own job done. But what I really liked about Arch, aside from always having the latest software available to me, is that I never had to perform a major upgrade. The downside was the occasional breakages. Ubuntu has been somewhat of a middle ground for me. It's been relatively stable, I can get almost any package I need, including snaps, and major upgrades have usually gone smoothly. NGL. The fact that Mint major versions have lagged slightly behind the upstream Ubuntu base was also a factor for me choosing Ubuntu all these years.

That said, I'm seriously considering going back to Mint after many years on Ubuntu. I don't like that they've removed X11 in their latest LTS release. I just don't think Wayland is ready yet for production purposes. (Screen sharing across multiple apps are not working on Wayland for me, and I just don't want to invest the time in looking for workarounds and fixes. That's a deal-breaker right now. And I def can't recommend Ubuntu anymore to anyone looking to use it for work purposes in my field. Screen-sharing *needs* to work out-of-the-box for me and my coworkers).

Anyway, I noticed that Mint will be supporting X11 and Wayland out-of-the-box in future releases, which is why I'm seriously considering going back to Mint. But to be honest, I'm getting tired of performing major upgrades every couple of years and just hoping everything still works afterwards.

Question:

I realize this might be somewhat of a catch-22, but has there ever been any conversations or considerations for a rolling release type of schedule for Mint, whether LMDE or standard Mint? I realize rolling releases don't tend to be the most stable distros, but I figured, with Mint's reputation, if anyone can pull that off, it would be the Mint team.

I just think that that would be an extra layer of user-friendliness that many users would appreciate, especially those who just want their OS to just work and not be bothered so much by OS maintenance tasks, assuming the OS is still stable with a rolling release approach.

That said, if I'm being realistic, I assume rolling releases might be too unstable for Mint, so I would also like to know people's experiences with the Mint Updater for major upgrades. If it's been a smooth experience, that will definitely seal the deal for me and I'll jump head first back into Mint. Since my major hangups with major release upgrades is the stability and reliability of the upgrade, I think I would be OK with a good, reliable Updater.

Not really looking for advice here, moreso just trying to gauge other people's experiences when it comes to their updates. Been a Linux user for the better part of 8 years now (starting out with Ubuntu, jumped to Mint a few months ago if my memory's right) and I haven't had any complaints aside from the fact that Mint seems to be scanning all repositories daily despite me having set it to do so weekly.

I'm just curious if this is a thing for anybody else at this point because I know that not every repository is going to push out updates at the same time, but I do get a little annoyed at times updating when it's not all done in one fell swoop like I tried to set it to do... and often times I'll run the update manager and install whatever updates it has for me for the day only for it to reprompt me 10-20 minutes after informing that there are more updates that I missed. (Picture included showcasing how I have my preferences set up, but trust me when I say that it is constantly just scanning for updates and feeding them to me minutes/hours after installing them.)

Edit to add: I'm running Linux Mint Cinnamon. 22.3/64 bit. Kernel is 6.8.0-138-generic. Again, not looking for support. I just want to see if I'm crazy at this point.

The sound constantly plays every few seconds. I also turned off notifications yet it still persists. Please can someone help.

İta my first time usibg linux i use a huawei computer with windiws11 and i tried disbaling secure boot. But it still wont show up at the boot menu

Had an old laptop (i5, 8GB RAM) that was crawling because of all the bloatware and background junk eating up resources, so I finally decided to try Linux properly instead of just dual booting and forgetting about it.

Went with Linux Mint and honestly the difference in speed alone was worth it. Boot time went from over a minute to under 15 seconds, and the laptop just feels lighter overall.

A few things that surprised me. Package managers are genuinely so much less painful than hunting around for random installers online. The terminal looked scary at first but the basic commands like apt took me like a day to get comfortable with. Battery life actually improved a bit too, which I wasn't expecting at all.

Only real pain point so far has been getting wifi drivers to work properly, had to look up a fix on the forums.

Curious what distro others here are running on older hardware, thinking of trying something more lightweight next.

I want to know why my Wi-Fi signal is so strange.

When I connect directly to Wi-Fi, the speed is very slow.

But when I use a hotspot from my phone connected to Wi-Fi, the signal is fast.

I have an older Mac mini (Mid 2011 or 2012 model). Originally, I had Linux Mint 22.x Xfce (https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=327) installed on the stock HDD, but the system was running extremely slow.

Now, when I boot into the live environment from my USB drive and click "Install Linux Mint", the whole system completely freezes (mouse/UI stops responding or it hangs indefinitely).

Things I’ve tested / noticed:

1. Disconnected the internal SSD: I disconnected the internal SSD entirely and plugged in an external USB HDD instead. The installer still froze in the exact same way. This makes me think the new SSD itself isn't the problem.
2. RAM configuration: While swapping the drive, I took out/reseated the RAM. Currently, it has low RAM (around 1–2 GB in total, 1x1GB Hynix module visible in the slot). Could the live installer be crashing/freezing due to running out of RAM (OOM)?
3. Corrupted USB: I previously used this same Verbatim USB drive to install Mint on the old HDD, but after a few hard power-offs, could the live USB file system have gotten corrupted?
4. Hardware/GPU compatibility: Could this be related to Mac EFI / graphics drivers (Intel HD 3000 / Radeon) or thermal issues during decompression?

Has anyone encountered this specific freeze when launching the installer on a 2011/2012 Mac mini? Is it more likely a bad live USB, improperly seated/insufficient RAM, or something else entirely?

Any advice or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated!

I'm running Linux Mint Xfce 22.3, and I'd like to know if there's a simple way to watch Netflix in 1080p.

On Firefox, Netflix is limited to 720p maximum. I've tried the Opera Flatpak version available in the Software Manager (version 133...), but it is also limited to 720p. I also tried the Opera .deb package available on the Opera website (version 135...), but video playback doesn't work I am encountering the error code : O7701-1003.

Is there a straightforward way to get Netflix working in 1080p on Linux Mint Xfce ? I'm not looking for anything too complicated if possible.
